best HIIT routine EVER & a challenge for you!

October 12, 2009

happy monday! i can actually say that without any sarcasm today! it has turned out to be an excellent day and i just feel happy which feels awesome. how was your day? hopefully not too stressful. no more monday mornings for 6 1/2 more days! :P

thanks for all the congratulatory comments on my new place. i can’t wait to show you all photos of it.. namely the kitchen ;) i have a feeling the blog photos will be getting a lot better come november. now if i could just find my way around those fluorescent lights at work!

i wasn’t so stoked this morning.. after just 5 hours of sleep, my monday was off to a tired start! note to self: don’t stay up on sunday nights to watch iron chef.  (in my defense, it was battle berry and i couldn’t take my eyes off bobby flay’s insanely creative savory berry concoctions!) needless to say i was happy to get my morning java when we went to the original pancake house for our weekly sales meeting :)

meal 1: COFFEE! 2 slices dry wheat toast & 2 eggs over medium @ 8:30 AM

 meals 794 meals 796

no, not my typical monday fare of scrambled egg whites, but i was really craving the runny yolks so i went with it.. mmmm.. totally worth the extra yolkage!

meals 797

i was uber productive at work today. i was in the zone and i just worked all through the morning without even looking at the time. when i finally did i was shocked to see it was one o’clock! i love it when the day whizzes by like that. i was surprised that my breakfast held me over so long. usually my stomach is screaming “EAAATTT!” but nope, not today! and i had a lighter breakfast too, which is a quandary.

meal 2: yep.. this wrap again :) @ 1:00 PM

meals 798

i could lie and say i ate this because it is so amazing (which it is) but the real truth is that it was all i had in the work fridge! luckily i love it so i was happy to have this wrap once again. cottage cheese, mushrooms, cucumbers, hummus and a flatout wrap. lunch!

 meals 800

since my lunch was so late and i had cardio on the agenda for after work, i didn’t have a snack between lunch and dinner. instead, i went to the gym for what i do believe is my favorite new HIIT routine!

moves_thumb

i made this up today, i am going to call it the 20-15-10 HIIT.  why? because it is 45 minutes of High Intensity Interval Training:

  • 20 minutes on treadmill
  • 15 minutes on elliptical
  • 10 minutes on stairmill

this is how it all broke down:

treadmill=20 minutes, 2.09 miles, 170 calories

incline=0

  • 2 min @ 6.0

four sets of this interval cycle, increasing the incline by 0.5 each time (starting at 0.5 and ending at 2.0)

  • 1 min @ 6.0
  • 1 min @ 6.5
  • 1 min @ 7.0
  • 1 min @ 7.5

high point “level 10”

  • 1 min @ 9.0

elliptical=15 minutes, 2.14 miles, 135 calories

i pushed hard for 4 minutes and took it easy for 1 minute, three times through.

  • 4 min level 7 @ 9-10mph
  • 1 min level 2 @ 7mph
  • 4 min level 7 @ 9-10mph
  • 1 min level 2 @ 7mph
  • 4 min level 7 @ 9-10mph
  • 1 min level 2 @ 7mph

stairmill=10 minutes, 118 calories

i did a minute each of fast, medium, slow twice through then finished off with a minute of fast and a minute of slow twice through.

  • 1 min @ level 12
  • 1 min @ level 8
  • 1 min @ level 4
  • 1 min @ level 12
  • 1 min @ level 8
  • 1 min @ level 4
  • 1 min @ level 12
  • 1 min @ level 4
  • 1 min @ level 12
  • 1 min @ level 4

total stats: max HR=184, ave HR=161, calories burned=423, duration 48 min (extra time spent cleaning off machines and switching)

WOW! this HIIT routine was the best best best! try it right now! i loved the variation that came from using 3 machines.. i didn’t get bored, my heart rate was up and down and all around, best interval routine ever. and over 400 calories burned? can’t complain there.

i think it goes without saying that i was starvinnnng when i got home.

    enter: kitchen clearing challenge

since i am moving in less than a month, i need to work on using all the food in my fridge, freezer and cupboards.  additionally, i am broke as a joke from all the trips i have been taking and the new purchases (car, more expensive insurance, deposit on new place to live) and i need to save some dollars… so i think this kitchen clearing challenge is just what the doctor ordered! i can use up my supplies and save money while i am at it.  my goal is to not go to the grocery store unless it is absolutely, positively necessary!

if anyone wants to join in on this kitchen clearing challenge, i invite you to try to make a few meals using only what you have in your fridge, freezer and cupboards.  it will be awesome to put our culinary creativity to the test and see what we can all come up with!

this challenge starts today and will last until the end of october.  now, i know none of you will be as die hard as i am going to try to be since i want to use EVERYTHING up.. but try your best to make a meal using items you have on hand, and if you do.. tell me about it so i can link to your kitchen clearing meal!

i went into the kitchen to see what i could come up with.  to my surprise, i ended up making one of the best dinners i have had in a long time.

meal 3: black bean + ground turkey vegetable soup w/ greek yogurt & 2 slices of toast with sunbutter @ 7:00 PM

    meals 817

i made an extra caloric dinner to make up for my lack of a snack this afternoon.

i took 3 ounces of frozen ground turkey and browned it with some seasonings.  i then added this to the saucepan:

    meals 802

    meals 804  meals 803

and added a dollup of fage 0% to the top of my soup~

      meals 813

i read a post on rose’s blog today talking about food that is ugly but tastes incredible. this is one of those foods ;)

growing up, i always paired toast & peanut butter with vegetable soup.  i thought the sunbutter would be a nice switchup because of the fact that it has a more savory flavor compared to peanut butter.

i used two slices of this bread:

    meals 805 meals 806

after toasting them to perfection, i slathered 1 TB of sunbutter on the slices~

    meals 811

all together it clocked in around 500 calories, 47g protein, 63g carbs & 12g fat.. a protein/carb/fat ratio of 35/45/20. pretty close to perfect :)

    meals 816

of course, i proceeded to eat it by mixing the yogurt into the soup and then spooning heaps of the soup onto the warm, sunbuttery toast. the sunbutter was SUCH a nice complement to the soup! perfecto!

    meals 821

this dinner was honestly remarkable. one that i will go to the store to get the ingredients again (after the challenge, of course) and make over and over. it kills me that i had ALL the ingredients for this delectable dinner at home already.  if i hadn’t implemented this challenge today, i would have gone to the grocery store after the gym and spent around $20 on dinner supplies. cost of tonight’s dinner? $zero$!!!!

after my fantastic meal i attempted to catch up on reader for awhile but in the long run google reader won again and i only knocked it down to about 45.. which means it will be well over 100 in the morning. ah, what can ya do? slowly but surely!

i was feeling like something sweet and autumny so i finished the night off with some more on-hand supplies~

meal 4: pumpkin protein shake @ 9:30 PM

    image

    (recycled photo, camera died!)

i swear, this tastes JUST like a pumpkin ice cream shake.. but is 100% healthy :D love it. in case you missed it, you can see my recipe here.

whew. this ended up being a real long post! oh, before i go i did want to give a big gratzie! thank you! gracias! to a couple more fabulous gals who passed along the over the top award to me (i filled out the award survey & passed it on in this post)…thanks lauren and megan!

hope your tuesday is fabulous! it is national yorkshire pudding day so celebrate accordingly! and it is lexi’s birthday! happy birthday girl :)

    Qs

    1. if you were on “iron chef” what would you want the secret ingredient to be? i would for sure want cheese.

    2. what is your favorite soup? i love soup with loads of veggies but i am also really fond of creamy tomato with a grilled cheese.

don’t forget to join me in the kitchen clearing challenge! let me know if you whip something up without having to buy anything new!

That soup looks really good, especially with the meat addition.
      Pumpkin shake, great dessert!
I definetely need to eat more out of my cupboards and freezer, sometimes I get so excited grocery shopping and get lots of stuff I don’t need:)

super awesome challenge! when me and my sissy used to live in our apartment together i used to get real creative with my eats and had weeks where we wouldnt have anything, but we would begin to get creative and made what we had in our pantry’s. You’ll be awesome at this!

1- i would want the ingredient to be beans. i think u can do alot with beans

2-any hearty veggie soup is my favorite! :)

I love how all your food in this post seems to glisten:)
I am so down for this kitchen challenge–my cupboard are bursting at the seams!

      1. Probably coconut, peanut butter or tofu–I think all my meals have at least one of those three in them.
      2. I love CHILI.

I love this challenge- I need it! But I feel that as a vegan, I rely heavily on fresh produce. Can’t I please still get some fresh produce, but only that and no pantry items? Can that count?

Anywhooo, I’m so stoked you’re feeling so happy!!! I love it (and you, obvs.)!

Fun Qs! My Iron Chef ingredient would be sweet potato! Or canned pumpkin. I’m really into both right now.

Aaand fave soup: butternut squash soup! MamaJ makes a killer one with corn and beans thrown in! Hell, there’s anotha orange food.

Hope your Tuesday is as lovely as your Monday! LOVE YOU!!!

    5. October 13, 2009 12:01 am

such an awesome challenge!! i should really do that myself.! you made your dinner sound delicious! even if it did look a little funkay ;)

      1. pumpkin
      2.lentil daal, tomato.

    6. October 13, 2009 12:14 am

damn girl I just did a month’s worth of pantry cleaning action and 1. vowed to not throw food away in my move process 2. not take any extra food with that was heavy boxes I didnt need if I planned propertly and 3. not go to the groc store unless I totally needed to. Lots of soup was eaten :) in addition to dried fruit and nuts. And fresh greens. And random chip snacky food filled hubs lunches for weeks. And my kid lucked out with tons of snacky type food I wouldnt normally give her in that quantity but I did. No blog worthy meals per se but just getting thru it.

      Secret ingredient? Chocolate. Duh.

      xoxo

    7. October 13, 2009 12:18 am

I have been on a kitchen clearing challenge for a few weeks now! I had/have a ridiculous amount of foods to go through. Slowly winding down, but still have WAY too much cereal and different bars in my stock. Enough to last me a year – I swear!!

      1. Well I’m in my massive pumpkin kick right now so I’m gonna go with pumpkin for shiz.

      2. Love chicken tortilla. And also love a good turkey chili!

    8. October 13, 2009 12:44 am

I would want the secret ingredient to be apples. They’re versatile and easy to work with…no seafood. I’m horrible with that! I love almost all of Amy’s soups. My fave is probably split pea.

    9. October 13, 2009 2:47 am

I’m pretty sure I’ve never run at 9 mph. I wonder if I could even do it. 10 mph is just insanely cool!
My favorite soup is mom’s homemade chicken soup :)
Off to check off your pumpkin smoothie recipe…I think I need that in my life!

    10. October 13, 2009 3:36 am

      1.) Chocolate

      2.) Chunky vegetable

      Q1: kabocha
Q2: any soup that has a lot of veggies!

Great cleaning pantry challenge. I wanted to do it many times, but always fail when i go to groceries store and see all the fresh produces! :)

    12. October 13, 2009 4:57 am

I like to make extravagant meals for family and friends sometimes, and while they always end up tasting good.. it is the simple dinners that always end up blowing my mind and tasting delicious! I need to take part in the cleaning pantry challenge since I won’t be in Charlotte for 3 months, we can help each other out ;)

I second the creamy tomato soup with grilled cheese.. there’s nothing better soup-wise! Enjoy your day girl! xoxo

    13. October 13, 2009 5:05 am

That sure does sound like a kick a** workout! I need to remember this one. I actually have an idea in the works for somehow sharing and rotating these circut workouts throughout the blogsphere so keep this in mind because it will be perfect for my idea. (I’ll fill ya in later ;)

I love your Operation Clean Out idea! I will do my best to oblige and try this challenge myself. :)

PS- AHHHHH, I’m such a big dork! I can’t beleive I spelled your name like that. Don’t worry sweetpea, I totally edited it! :)

I really need to try this pumpkin protein shake! That pic makes me drool!

      1) Hmm…secret ingredient would probably be oats.

      2) I’m not really much of a soup person in general but I do love a good french onion soup!

    15. October 13, 2009 5:55 am

I’ve actually been trying to eat things that I already have at home, too, as I figure it’s a good way to force myself to eat new, different things! (Product doesn’t count.) Nothing exciting, but I’m not catering to my every routine whim :)

And I love Iron Chef, but could only stay up for “The Next Iron Chef” before crashing. I could never be on that show, as it stresses me out, but I love watching it. (Well, as long as the secret ingredient is pig ears or butt fat or something like that…then I have to change the channel, as even Bobby Flay can’t make me like looking at it.)

    16. October 13, 2009 6:00 am

Oooh! I love the kitchen clearing challenge idea! I’m actually doing alright on that front because I just moved. But I DO have some bags of grains and noodles that have quite literally been sitting in my cupboard for YEARS. They will definitely be cleared out this month! :D

Love that HIIT routine!! Now that I’m in a gym with tons of machines, I suffer from machine ADD every time I’m there. It’s so much more fun to just hop from one to the other :)

      1. Okay, first I’m glad I don’t have the Food Network anymore, or else I would have also been very tired on Monday. I think I’d want my secret ingredient to be tofu. It’s so versatile!

      2. I’m very picky about soups since I don’t like “drinking” my meals. I really like a thick and chunky butternut squash soup though. Or, does chili count?

    17. October 13, 2009 6:01 am

That’s an awesome challenge! I’m considering it, but I think I may run out of veggies ;) I’m going to have to try that bread from Sunflower–50 calorie NON-diet bread? Winner!

    18. October 13, 2009 6:53 am

      mm….runny eggs :)

I think the challenge sounds great!

      1. if you were on “iron chef” what would you want the secret ingredient to be? Hmm..eggs or chocolate or some kind of grain.

      2. what is your favorite soup? I love any homemade soup, especially bean soups and homemade chicken noodle.

mmmmm I totally heart pumpkin protein shakes. It’s oh so perfect for the fall :)

Lett’s seee mmm IF I was an iron chef (which I do believe I am already. haha) I thiiink I would want either a Naturally More challenge, or apples, or canned pumpkin! hahahah

I’m faheeelin your challenge girl. Mayyybe I’ll dabble..does this include fruits and veggies?

    20. October 13, 2009 6:59 am

oh janetha, how i wish my google reader said “45” haha, it is now up to 421 – when i got back from vacation on friday, it was 336 and i thought i had done a good amount of reading .. apparently, not. :) oh well

kitchen clearing sounds great, i move out as well in less than a month! i not only need kitchen clearing but room clearing/detailing/packing, as well!! :) lol

favorite soup is by far tomato basil. so delish!

    21. October 13, 2009 7:14 am

Love the HIIT! Ill need to try it. Beating the boredom with a long w/out is always a challenge!! Yay for the kitchen challenge, I’m SO bad at not using up my pantry! I think I will try my own version of this!
That punkin pro shake looks sooo delish every time I see it, its about time I try it!

I would want MUSHROOMS for my iron chef ingredient- so meaty + versatile. Yum!

My fave combo of soup/sammie is tomato and grilled cheese, but my fave soup is French Onion!

      xo

    22. October 13, 2009 7:23 am

awesome challenge! i feel like so much goes wasted in pantrys !! and congrats on finding a placeeeeeeeeee! :)

    23. October 13, 2009 7:30 am

The kitchen clean up challenge is a great idea! I have been working on using up more in my freezer and cupboards. But I still have quite a bit to get through…

      1. Tomatoes. Definitely tomatoes. I love tomatoes and there are so many different things you can make with them…
      2. Tomato soup. Yes, I know. I’m predictable… ;)

    24. October 13, 2009 7:44 am

I love that soup. I am way too addicted to it.

    25. October 13, 2009 7:46 am

yay for happy days! i have instituted the fridge clean-out when i moved too – helps save SO MUCH money. not always fun, but worth it in the end.

i want an iron chef battle between michael symon and anthony bourdain, and i want them to cook with sweet potatoes. gosh, that would be GLORIOUS!

fave soup? probs chili – that counts right? or black bean or tomato, the classics :)

      have another lovely tuesday dear!

    26. October 13, 2009 7:55 am

Glad to hear you had a good Monday :) Your soup/toast combo sounds delish! I love when I come up with great meals when I’m not really trying!

I would want the secret ingredient to be tomatoes…I just love them!

My favorite soup is split pea.

      Have a great week!!!

    27. October 13, 2009 8:21 am

Love a good Monday, it’s either Fridays or Mondays that suck for me…

Don’t you love the bread from Sunflower Market!! The fact that each slice is only 50 calories doesn’t hurt either. :)

Protein shake looks awesome and way to go on the awesome workout! I’m in a bit of a workout rut lately. I found a new love for Pilates but my chiropractor told me it’s bad for my neck…

      1) Anything with banana is a winner with me.

      2) I really like miso soup but only in restaurants. At home I’d go for either a black bean/corn soup or something lentil. Tomato hurts my belly….

    28. October 13, 2009 8:32 am

I really need to get some pumpkin to try that smoothie!

Fave soup: definitely homemade chicken soup

    30. October 13, 2009 9:47 am

Awesome workout!! I love to break up my cardio sessions too.. that way I don’t get bored. Isn’t the stairmaster a great workout?? I used to think it was stupid but now I love it.. it’s so challenging!

And I need to try that pumpkin smoothie! But I’m always so cold that smoothies never seem appetizing.

      And yay for Sunflower Market!!

    31. October 13, 2009 9:51 am

I missed the big announcement but CONGRATS!! That’s great that you’ve got a place lined up!!

I’m convinced that stomachs get confused when you switch up breakfasts and they end up holding you over longer. If I have a new breakfast, I’m golden for a long time but if I have a repeat, I’m hungry 2 hours later.

What a fantastic dinner!! 1 = um….I don’t know, mushrooms?! 2 = depends on my mood. If I want something hearty – black bean soup or if I’m in a light mood – veggie-filled soup :)

    32. October 13, 2009 10:01 am

      2) Italian Wedding soup!

Great challenge! I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

I got sucked into Battle Berry too! Bobbie Flay made some really good looking stuff!

If I were on Iron Chef I would want the secret ingredient to be pumpkin. But I would much rather have the canned stuff than have to make it out of actual pumpkins. Not very Iron Chef of me!

Don’t you love when days fly by? I pretty much eat my food stash as I go…by the time I go grocery shopping, I’m pretty much depleted. At home it’s a different story. I’ll be interested to see what you come up with!

      1) kefir (haha jk)…umm chocolaaaaate!
      2) I’m not a huge soup fan because I like to chew but Italian Wedding is my fav!

    41. October 13, 2009 1:45 pm

beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think your soup looks gorgeous :)

3rd, as Iron Chef, my ingred would be BEANS!

    43. October 13, 2009 2:45 pm

NICE job on busting through that HIIT routine! I’m contemplating doing it tonight on my run.

And I’m already there on the kitchen clearing experiment! I didn’t even take my weekly trip to the grocery store because this week was use-up-what’s-in-my-pantry week!

    44. October 13, 2009 2:51 pm

and I lurveeeee the challenge idea — wish I would’ve read this this morning before going to the grocery store and dropping 80 big ones on lots of useless frivalous things. I need help.

      1. I could totes give Bobby Flay a run for his money if the secret ingredient were oats.

Hey! I joined you in your kitchen clearing challenge today actually, and it was awesome! It’s cold here and I was in the mood for soup and remembered that I have some chicken stock in the cupboard that I needed to be used. I’m getting tired of the same ole dinner of steamed veggies and chicken, so I decided to take all of my fresh veggies out of the produce drawer (before they spoil), throw them in a pot with my stock and some chicken I had in the freezer, along with a bunch of spices….and wala!! that HIIT sounds like a hit! haha! who brings the jokes?

I would join your challenge but my cupboards are tragically bare. it’s kind of embarrassing actually. I’m not a smart stocker.

      1. garlic, dulse, or raw cashews. against flay or batali, maybe.

      2. I like a basic, freestyle veggie soup. as many veg as possible, a tomato-y broth, and lots of spiciness. oh, and I make a really good vegan lemon split pea soup. I just remembered that. that might have to be made soon…

so glad you had a great day!

It’s like Indian food! It looks like mush but it’s sooooo good!

      1. Hmm… maybe… edamame? Not sure.

      2. Mine? Would have to be my grandma’s green pea soup. If you like Amy’s soup, you should try the Thai coconut one – it’s really good!

p.s. can’t wait for Waffle Wednesday ;) WAFFLE HEAVEN!! GAH

Whenever I make a “everything but the kitchen sink” meal, it ends up being stir fried veggies, mixed with salsa and sometimes cottage cheese. It works though and produce that’s on it’s last legs is often what I’m trying to get rid of. I sometimes put beans in the mix too.

      1. I would like avocados for the secret ingredient.

      2. I like vegetable soups.

My Mama makes an amazing bean soup that I grew up on. Made with beans, carrots, ham, potato and a RICH thick sauce. And yes, it is BAD for you. I don’t eat it very often anymore but when I do, yes, I do moan!

Secret ingredient? Hmm…. Any one of the following I think. Oats, bananas, raspberries and of course AVOCADO!

I love the challenge and of course I’m fully stocked at home so this should be fun! ;)

Your workout sounds awesome! I’m definitely going to give something like that a try in the near future… just need to get my bum back into the gym. :)

The challenge is a great idea – I really need to get rid of some old food! Ew.

Oh I totally did this tonight. I made a faux fried rice by cooking up some brown rice, scrambling two egg whites and then combining the two ingreds with brocolli, reduced sodium soy sauce, canned corn and a little bit of vinegar. It was divine! Good luck :)

I heartily approve of your kitchen clearance challenge! have been doing some of that myself! :D
And haha, I crave runny yolks EVERY SINGLE DAY! Had one today for lunch too!

      1) eggs, or cheese, or kabocha
      2) my kabocha soup with goat cheese and bacon!

I love the new kitchen clearing challenge – I definitely need to take part in this, I really need to get my pantry cleaned up and cleared out!

      1. If i was on iron chef – I would want the secret ingredient to be… mushrooms!

      2. gosh – i LOVE soup, its sooo hard to pick a favorite, but I have to say theres something amazing about curried pumpkin apple soup…mmm

Uh oh, you KNOW how I love your HIITs!! And love this change in machinery, I’ll definitely give it a try soon! :)

      1. Ooo that’s so tough! I think pumpkin would be fun, super versatile from main dishes to desserts!

      2. Mmm I love basic chicken noodle, but my favorite of all time has gotta be Amy’s Chunky Tomato Bisque. It’s amazing.
