unblogworthy.

May 19, 2011

hey guys!

guess what? i am feeling more like a human today. i woke up and had a pounding headache and slight body aches, but that’s it.. no other symptoms lingering. well, aside from my lack of appetite.  i am sure that will be back before i know it. it’s real weird to not eat food regularly or think about food when i am not eating it. i definitely miss having an appetite.   i also haven’t been working out.. my last workout was in palm springs last sunday.  monday i was traveling and tuesday at 2:30 AM is when the flu bug of death bit me.

because i haven’t eaten anything OR done a single workout since last sunday, i really have nothing to blog about. i haven’t even been a functioning member of society at all this week, so i can’t really tell you about my days. they have consisted of sleeping a LOT, playing words with friends and posting photos to instagram.  speaking of.. if you are an iphone user, get instagram and then let me know your name so i can follow you! my username is janetha. i know, so creative.  here are my most recent sick kid instagram shots.

saltines + lemon lime soda. sick food of champions, right? i didn’t even care that the saltines have hydrogenated oil. sometimes only the real-deal saltines will do.

IMG_0607

my fever at 102.4 degrees on tuesday. ick.

IMG_0615

i tried to eat bread and soup. i managed to eat a little of it. thanks to my husband for making it for me. he’s a pretty good nurse. i switched from lemon lime soda to coconut water—much more beneficial and hydrating.

IMG_0616

marshall went and got me a huge thing of frozen yogurt. you know there is always room for ice cream! this was coconut and tart mixed together. penny had a bite. so did randy.

IMG_0617

marshall stuck me in quarantine. at least i had the pups to keep me company.

IMG_0618

this is, HANDS DOWN, the best breakfast ever. i ate it regularly as a kid.. except with white bread. all it is is toast with lots of butter—real butter, mind you—and warm milk mixed with nestle quik.  you fold the toast in half and dunk it into the cocoa. oh man.. talk about a trip down memory lane. cocoa and toast (as my fam calls it) is always the best for a sick stomach.

IMG_0620

fever was going down by wednesday.. 100.8!

IMG_0624

i had to go into work yesterday, so i grabbed some lunch on my way in. more frozen yogurt. this time it was pineapple, vanilla and coconut. i don’t waste my time with toppings.

IMG_0627

after a measly 4 hours at the office, i made it home and back on the couch.

home is where the hound is.

IMG_0628

penny always blinks when the camera flashes. i think she’s related to my sister, marisa, who is notorious for blinking.  either that or she’s just a dog who doesn’t understand english, so when i say, “pen, don’t blink!” she looks at me like “whatcha talkin about ma? and what’s with this bright light in my eyes?!”

IMG_0629

marshall went to the gym last night and penny took a 2 hour nap on me. i couldn’t move, even though i really had to pee. i mean, look at her, could you?

IMG_0639

and last but not least, i was messing around with the labelbox app paired with instagram to produce this beauty. i love deb and her grapefruits!

IMG_0641

so, as you can see.. i haven’t been up to much. definitely no meals or moves. i am really bummed that i came down with such a horrible case of the flu, because it put my insanity challenge on hold for a bit.  i haven’t done insanity since last saturday in palm springs. i was going to do it sunday, but the DVD wouldn’t play for some reason (i bought the discs off craig’s list and they are a tad temperamental), so i did a bodyrock.tv workout instead. anyway.. to make a short story way too long, i haven’t done insanity in almost a solid week, so i am just going to start back up again on sunday so i am not all twacked out on which day i am on (since insanity goes by weeks). i hope i haven’t lost too much of my fitness! i have the fit test coming up, so we will see how bad this little break really is for my progress.  i don’t care that i am not working out, but i do care that this is messing with my insanity challenge. it sucks that i had to stop! oh well, life goes on.

oh! i totally forgot that i have a giveaway winner to announce. sorry ‘bout that. these things slip my mind when i have my head in the toilet. TMI? anyway.. the winner of the ascenta health omega 3 giveaway is………

i just baked strawberry rhubarb bread! and baby chicks hatched in our coup. and i also did 20 consistent pullups with no assist. i live quite the exciting life.
and i just came to the conclusion that i can’t live without eggs, salmon, oatmeal and all veggies.

baby chicks! how fun! and 20 pullups?! dang girl. good for you! i cant even do one.

  4. May 19, 2011 11:05 am

glad your starting to feel better.
When i am sick, its soda crackers and ginger ale. and then dry toast or toast with a little butter, and chicken noodle soup from a can. Thats how my momma always did it, so i still do that when i’m sick, its a feeling of love in there that helps me feel better.

    <3 get well soon!

You have inspired me to try BFL, and I’m on day 4 and going strong! I’ve been referencing your meals for ideas! So thank you for that!

When I’m sick, its also saltines and sprite, or Gatorade (only the lemon flavor), dry toast, and chicken broth!

That is the longest unblogworthy blog I have ever seen!

Glad you’re feeling better. You’re pups are aDORable. And when I’m sick – I usually go for popsicles. They keep me hydrated, are more fun than an ice cube, and since they’re frozen, I can’t eat them fast and then barf them back up. :-)

cool pictures! I like the instagram thing ;) Hope you feel better soon!

  12. May 19, 2011 12:01 pm

I am glad you are feeling better. I have missed your upbeat posts this week. You see, it has been a rough week for me too. Monday night I learned that my Great Aunt, one of the most wonderful, fun and loving people in the world, passed away. She was 89 and had a very full life, but I don’t want her to leave yet. Who will waltz with me at family reunions now? I have been crying and sleeping and cooking. Heading out to the viewing now. Funeral is tomorrow. Rest in peace Virginia.

When I am sick sick sick, it’s mashed potatoes for me. Before that, it’s saltines. And unsweetened tea, preferable oolong, which soothes the stomach.

  13. May 19, 2011 12:10 pm

Oh honey that fever is insane! I’m so glad you’re feeling better…I’ve been fighting off the “break from caffeine headache” all week…blah!

  14. May 19, 2011 12:18 pm

oh Janetha! I wish I could bring you more frozen yogurt!! The flu is seriously the pits. Hopefully you’ll be 100% by tomorrow afternoon so you can enjoy the weekend :) toast dunked in chocolate milk? How interesting! I definitely go for dry toast and soup when I’m sick…usually with a side of gatorade. Cute pics of the puppers. What have I been up to this week? ummm just a packed week with stuff. Highlight- baby doctors appointment- all is well. And I baked 9 dozen cookies today for an event we’re going to this weekend!

  15. May 19, 2011 12:19 pm

    I’m glad you’re feeling a bit better!

I agree, the best meals are those that have associated good memories of childhood or other happy times. The food just tastes better. I will always want scrambled eggs when I’m sick because that’s what mama made!

  16. May 19, 2011 12:36 pm

I’m so glad you’re feeling better. Sounds like you were well looked after my the fam. I always have lemonade when I’m ill or ginger beer and cups of english tea. When it comes to food… I think I just have things like soup and toast. Hope you continue to go onwards and upwards :)

  17. May 19, 2011 12:37 pm

PS my life is SOOOO dull at the mo. Honestly. I’m trying to work on my final year dissertation and it’s a kicker. Too much time to myself to study makes me mental :P

Glad you’re feeling better! You’ll be back on track with Insanity before you know it. BTW, I’m jealous you had access to a grapefruit tree – that would be my dream!

This past week has been insane for me – I accomplished a crazy awesome goal – running 2 marathon in 8 days, setting PRs for each one! Not trying to brag too much, but I kinda am! It’s made me feel invincible…except for the hip, knee and shin pain I have.

I took home my wedding dress this week and more wedding DIY is what I’ve been up to.

  22. May 19, 2011 1:37 pm

I have an incredible immune system so I’m rarely sick, but I actually only remember losing my appetite once in high school. When I am sick, I usually want comfort food – soup, noodles, bread, oatmeal, hot chocolate and smoothies for the cold/hot difference on my throat if I have strep.

  23. May 19, 2011 1:44 pm

As a kid I used to eat a very similar breakfast, only it was warm chocolate malt ovaltine and cinnamon swirl toast with butter! The dunking made it.

    1. Nothing too exciting to fill you in on here! I’ve got serious DOMS and have eaten at least one mango every day this week. And I’m planning on trimming my own bangs tonight. Lots of excitement.

    2. When I’m sick I want bland carbs. Like a big doughy bagel that I can slowly gnaw on.

    So glad you’re feeling better!!

    • May 20, 2011 10:49 am

I love that you had such a similar breakfast! Everyone thinks I am batshit crazy when I talk about cocoa and toast. Your version sounds delightful.

  24. May 19, 2011 1:46 pm

Ek I hope you feel better soon :( I hate being sick, it can linger on forever!! When I sick I always crave carbs and soup. I make pancakes, chicken noodle soup, and lots of crackers too. I never really drink warm drinks. Last summer I had a strong bout of the flu and drank gallons of 7up a day (diet of course) and lived off Healthy choice chicken noodle soup.

    • May 20, 2011 10:50 am

Blech I hate diet soda! My mom actually accidentally bought me the Blue Sky Lemon Lime soda that is sweetened with stevia and I had to spit it out and made Marshall get me the real deal.. haha.

  25. May 19, 2011 1:50 pm

You’ve been sick so long that after this you should be healthy for years on end! Feel better!

BRAT diet for me – bananas, rice, apples, toast. And warm ginger ale.

I love love love toast when I’m sick. Sometimes spread with a little jam and peanut butter for nutrition. But nothing fancy ever. And its always hard to swallow down veggies.

Actually I just posted a lil jam recipe that might be your umm…jam…since i know you’ve been cutting down on sugar and its all-fruit/sugar free and whips up in 2 seconds flat. See if you can get that down, maybe?

I once had mono, strep throat, and scarlet fever all AT THE SAME TIME. Holy miserable. I couldn’t eat anything except saltines for weeks….I was gross skinny afterwards but I couldn’t keep anything down or even swallow to begin with because of my throat! Sometimes I was able to stomach plain chicken broth but then it just made me have to pee so much and I had no energy to even get up so I wouldn’t have much. I was also quarantined in a dorm room which made it worse hah. Glad you are startin’ to feel better!

Also, since you asked, i AM getting married next weekend, which is my exciting thing. So I am sure this is due to stress. Anyway, I look forward to yummier posts when this bug passes you by and hope you are back on your feet soon. Keep up the great blogging :)

  40. May 19, 2011 5:19 pm

old fashioned chicken and noodle soup, sprite and saltines work wonders every time.

OH, and recently my hubby and I discovered that peppermint tea is great for stomach aches. Just thought I’d share because we’ve been trying this lately when feeling ill and it REALLY works – within 10 to 20 minutes even. Plus, I love that it’s natural – no pain meds necessary.

Hope you’re back to 100% soon, friend!

  41. May 19, 2011 5:30 pm

“Home is where the hound is” is the best line ever. The end.
I know you feel like crap on a cracker (a Saltine, most likely,) but you still put out a post that kicks ass, and not just because it includes dogs.

Anyway, I know I’m actually really sick when I can’t even think about food. I think about food all the time and look forward to every freaking bite, so when I am actually repulsed by the thought of it, I know it’s legit germ warfare. Sigh…hope you feel better soon! I’m glad you’re beginning to feel better! I couldn’t agree with you more about saltines…Nothing beats ’em for a sick remedy. Oh, and jello. Growing up, my mom would give us ginger ale, jello and saltines. I can’t stomach the first two anymore, but saltines are still near and dear to my heart (when I’m not feeling good). I’ll have to try the cocoa and toast combo next time I’m under the weather. :-)

I love your topping-less frozen yogurt. I never bother with toppings either. People ask my why, and I say they obstruct the creaminess of the froyo. Because they do!

I think when you’re sick with a stomoch thing it’s hard to really say what you should eat, anything could be dangerous! If I am just sick with a cold or something I always crave really bad, greasy unhealthy food for some reason! lol

  57. May 20, 2011 10:52 am

Wow you’ve been really sick! I hope you get better soon. When I’m sick, no matter if it’s a stomach flu or a cold, I crave CARBS. I think it is because I love carbs in general. They are what I turn to whenever I’m down, whether mentally or physically. If I’m stomach sick, I go with saltines, diet sprite and a nice heart-warming movie :-)

Glad you’re feeling better! I think not being able to workout makes being sick even worse – because them I’m onery because I’m sick AND because I don’t have the feel-good exercise endorphins! Keep the recovery coming, and I think I need to try your favorite breakfast – but as my afternoon snack!

Oh girl, that’s awful!! Everyone is getting sick these days. There are some nasty bugs going around. :( Glad to hear that you’re feeling on the upswing!

Whenever I’m sick, I crave the most random things. This last time, I only wanted saltines and strawberry popsicles. But I’ve been known to eat only pizza bagel bites when I’m sicker than sick too. There’s no explanation for that sort of thing…haha. :D

I’m glad you’re starting to feel better! I actually came down with the stomach flu when I was doing Insanity last fall, too! What are the odds? I was out of commission for about a week, too, but I found I didn’t lose much of my fitness. I think you’ll be ok. :)

I’m glad you’re getting slowly better. The toast sounds delicious.

Oh man. I’m sure you’ll feel better soon. Just take it easy.

I spent the last few days being taken to the hospital in an ambulance for emergency gall bladder surgery and I am waiting now for a second procedure to remove stones from my liver. I was supposed to do a 5K today and I thought I had my eating act together. So listen, all of you younger ladies…take care now…don’t put it off. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE toast dipped in hot chocolate and you are the only other person I’ve ever heard of doing it! Lovely comfort food. I have been with you in spirit, Janetha – hope we are both back to our smart ass selves quickly. I have asked for special permission to wear a moo moo to work as long as I wear my id patch on it and reminding my boss not to send me for a surprise drug test for at least a month!

Aww, J! I’m just getting caught up on your posts! I’m so glad you’re feeling better now, but wow…you had it bad didn’t you?!

I’ll have to keep cocoa and toast in mind if I ever find myself under the weather (knock on wood!)
When I was little, my mom would just feed me crackers/plain toast and Sprite. To this day I wouldn’t touch a Sprite with a ten foot pole (if I still drank soda anyway) because just the smell of it makes me feel like I’m coming down with something! Haha!

Your breakfast reminded me that I have to tell you I’ve been regularly eating cereal + almond milk + egg white pillow regularly and it’s awesome. Like you! xo
