flashback friday: marching into the past.

March 26, 2010

yes, i know, the title to this post is ridiculously cheesy. there, i said it, so you don’t have to :)

hello and welcome to the weekend. soak it up, because those weekends are sneaky and never last long enough.

today is just going to be so random. so, so random.

meals

meal 1: mighty maple vanilla protein oats @ 8:45 AM

IMG_8555

favorite combo of protein oats. 1/3 cup dry oats, 2 cups water, cinnamon… cooked on the stovetop. stir in 1 scoop EAS vanilla premium protein powder in at the end and top with a TB of mighty maple peanut butter and a squirt of maple syrup.

i came across a pretty funny post on the food network humor blog today. (thanks to caroline for turning me onto this blog, it rocks).. it was “the 8 stupidest food advertising slogans of all time”. so funny that i had to pass it along to you guys.. (all credit goes to food network humor blog). the funniest part is maybe not the slogan, but what they say about the slogan. enjoy.

1. They’re not just alrighta, they’re Ore-Ida:

“Worst. Slogan. Ever. First, it’s not even grammatically correct. Second, it doesn’t even rhyme! Third, and most importantly, IT IS THE STUPIDEST THING I’VE EVER HEARD IN MY LIFE. Note to Ore-Ida: face it, no English words rhyme with your brand. Remember that before you come up with your next stupid slogan, which I pray is not something like “Grab a side-a Ore-Ida.”"

2. Campbell’s Soup: Mmm mmm good

“Mmm mmm good? That doesn’t even sound like a slogan. It sounds more like a grunting noise Cookie Monster would make upon hearing the Girl Scouts were in town. Besides, if the company wanted to be more honest, they’d just change their slogan to Mmm Mmm Salty and call it a day.”

3. Diet Coke: you are what you drink

“Great, so if we drink your product, we’re aspartylphenylalanine,  formaldehyde, and phosphoric acid. Do you really want to bring that to our attention? Stupid, stupid, stupid.”

4. M&Ms melt in your mouth, not in your hand

“Honestly, I’ve never eaten an M&M that HASN’T melted in my hand. At what frigid place were these slogan writers standing? The north pole? Iceland? At the foot of Martha Stewart’s bed?”

5. Subway: Eat fresh.

“If by “eat fresh” they mean “eat brown lettuce”, “shriveled tomatoes”, and “bread that almost always tastes stale even though it was supposedly just made,” then sure. That’s a great slogan. (And if the footlongs are only $5, why can’t I get out of there without spending $18 on a simple lunch for 2? Oh, that’s right, because it’s a gimmick. Nevermind.)”

6. The incredible edible egg

“Let this be a note to all advertisers: just because words can be rhymed, doesn’t mean they should be. Obviously it’s edible. It’s an EGG. And let’s be honest: is it really that incredible? It comes from a chicken, not the tooth fairy.”

7. Carlsberg: Probably the best beer in the world

“PROBABLY? If you’re not convinced, how the hell are we supposed to be?”

8. EVERY SLOGAN SMUCKERS EVER HAD

“Congratulations to Smuckers for continually coming up with some of the worst slogans in the food industry:

“With a name like Smucker’s, it has to be good!”
Uh, not really. What an ignorant statement. It doesn’t have to be anything.

“If you find a better jelly, you buy it!”
I will! Thanks for giving me permission!

“The only brand of jams that can make a piece of bread lively!”
I don’t really want my bread to be lively, thankyouverymuch. I’m actually perfectly content with it just sitting there lifeless.

“Smucker’s may be yummy, your tummy may be too, but your grocer’s freezer, is not far from you!”
I rest my case.”

bwahahaha.

anyway..

meal 2: turkey goulash + toasted flatout with laughing cow @ 12:00 PM

IMG_8566
you can check out the recipe for my goulash here. the only thing i wished when eating this was that i had added mushrooms. when i planned the meal, i didn’t buy mushrooms to put in the goulash because i thought marshall was eating dinner with me (and he hates the fungus among us). well, then he bailed. drat. one should always have mushrooms on hand.

IMG_8564IMG_8561

by no means the most photogenic meal, but it was delicious and filling.. which is what is important :)

the email was titled “doomed from the start”  and had the following photos attached:

mmmm your protein oats look scrumptious as always! QUESTION: How long does it take for all that water to get absorbed when cooking with only 1/3 cup oats??I usually just use 1 C and it seems to almost be too soupy.
    1. Smuckers def has ridiculous slogans. I can’t think of anymore right now haha.
    2. JOEY moves back to Boston tomorrow!!!!! I am soooo excited! We are going to dinner at a super yummy place and I also have to bake a cake for my friends surprise bday. Homework and baking till Joey gets in.

Love you and always love reading!

i love slogans and jingles. but for some reason i can’t come up with one right now.

  3. March 26, 2010 6:07 pm

I can’t think of any, which is odd since the annoying ones are always STUCK IN MY HEAD!!!

  4. March 26, 2010 6:15 pm

LMAO at all of those slogans.

You’re inspiring to look more into Body For Life – I’m going to do some NI math tonight :)

  5. March 26, 2010 6:26 pm

The only thing I can think of is the old car called a NOVA and how it never sold in Spanish speaking countries because “no va” means “doesn’t go”. Those food ones were awesome though! The best was the part about Martha Stewart. LOL And those “fail” pictures. I can’t believe the bigger penis ad!!! Thanks for sharing those.

And I actually did my first flashback friday post today. It was fun :) Thanks for the flashback trend.

  6. March 26, 2010 6:48 pm

OMG I have a picture of that Cock Flavored Soup on my blog somewhere. I saw it in Kroger like a year ago and took a picture. I need to find that post.

  7. March 26, 2010 6:51 pm

Thanks for all the humor :) I needed it after a tough week! I love me some might maple, but have no control around it usually, lol. I think I am going to do a flashback friday today! Sounds so fun!

  8. March 26, 2010 6:56 pm

I’ve always thought the same thing about M&M’s!! Apparently the sugar coating on them was really innovative when they were creative, so the slogan is basically saying that they melt slower than chocolate chips or whatever. I rarely hold them long enough for them to melt, though!! And the lifehouse gummies are too funny…I can’t believe people don’t realize this stuff…Enjoy your weekend!!

  9. March 26, 2010 7:00 pm

In my ghettofied neightborhood an employee at Aldi handwrote a sign for Cadbury Chocolate’s. “FINE ASS CADBURY CHOCOLATE’S, $3.99” Yea they wrote fine ass. I’m sure Cadbury just LOVES that lol.

  10. March 26, 2010 7:05 pm

    Those slogans are too funny!

  11. March 26, 2010 7:14 pm

How about Wendy’s “It’s wayyyy better than fast food.” Um, no it’s not. It IS fast food and it’s just as bad for you as the rest of the bunch.
Love this post! It had me giggling – especially those lighthouse gummies!

  14. March 26, 2010 8:33 pm

Is EAS vanilla premium protein powder any good? What brand would you recommend?

  16. March 26, 2010 8:46 pm

The foot of Martha Stewart’s bed. AHHHAHA! Dying!

Oh, I got one. Make 7-Up yours. Hey 7-Up, here’s a thought. Up yours! HA!

Have a great weekend Janetha B!!

  18. March 26, 2010 10:15 pm

I hate slogans. They always get stuck in my head, ugh! Like that new subway commercial for 5 dollar foot longs, bugger! I love your flash back fridays. They always seem to have red plastic cups in the picture. haha! I think you much less of a beer drinker these days. Am I right? hehe! Have a great weekend!

  19. March 26, 2010 10:16 pm

  20. March 26, 2010 11:08 pm

I just saw that alrighta ore-ida commercial as i was reading this! so stupid, it doesn’t even make sense. maybe you should make slogans, you’re pretty clever! a jingle that i can’t stand is mcdonald’s “gimme back that fillet o fish” that’s always on the radio! ugh, who eats those anyway?!

i love the flashback pics, those are some oldies but goodies : )

  21. March 26, 2010 11:46 pm

Your food looks so delicious and healthy!

Those food slogans are hilarious… especially the diet coke one. So bad for you!

For some reason I’m always telling my cats (in a non-sing-song voice), “Nationwide is on YOUR side.” I guess they did a good job of making it stick in my head (though we don’t use Nationwide..ha ha!)

  28. March 27, 2010 4:50 am

As always, I love your flashbacks and wish I had enough photos to do them every week!!

The worst slogan I ever heard was McDonalds a few years ago about their chicken nuggets- “now with REAL chicken!” Um, WTF have people been eating all these years…yikes.
