busy little saturday.

May 23, 2011

here i am! one more monday down.. the last working monday in may, actually. i cannot believe how fast this year is flying by.

as i mentioned, my weekend was jam packed. you already heard about my date night on friday.. so i will dive right into saturday.

the excitement started bright and early when marshall & i loaded up the pups and headed out to strut your mutt.  strut your mutt is an annual fundraising event.  all proceeds go to no more homeless pets of utah.  we weren’t able to go last year, but we did go in 2009.

marshall always walks penny and i always walk randy. this has 100% to do with the fact that penny has a huge crush on marshall and cries her little puppy eyes out if she is more than 3 feet from him at any given time.

IMG_3252

don’t believe me? watch this video of her crying when marshall had to run ahead to get a trash bag (because randy dropped a deuce before even entering the park. he’s a joy.)

yeah. total baby.

IMG_3264

there were SO many dogs. actually, the term “SO many” doesn’t even describe how many there were. naturally, i was in heaven. there was actually an abnormal amount of basset hounds.. i was surprised.

IMG_3256

we registered upon arrival and then headed to the expo. yes, an expo. for dogs.

IMG_3266

we snagged a few pupcakes for p & r.

IMG_3274 IMG_3272

before we knew it, it was time to strut!

IMG_3290

the course was about a mile.. pretty strenuous if you are a basset hound.

IMG_3284

it was so fun to walk with SO many other dogs.

IMG_3296

i sort of think dog watching is even better than people watching.

IMG_3299

water break!

IMG_3305 IMG_3308

obligatory family photo post-strut.

IMG_3315
it was a fun morning and was for a good cause.. we will definitely be back next year. and the one after that. and the one after that.

a few hours later, marshall & i headed out to salt lake sans pups. we had a very special purchase to make, but needed fuel first.

IMG_3318

toasters is a new-to-us sandwich shop right downtown on 300 south and 50 east.  it was such a nice day, so we ate outside.

IMG_3319

i had an iced americano with soy milk.

IMG_3322

i chose the turkey avocado on whole wheat ciabatta. go figure, i always get the turkey avocado.

IMG_3325

what made this sandwich special was the balsamic sauce.. it was SO incredible. it took the sandwich to a whole other level.

IMG_3326

marshall had the prosciutto sandwich, which also had the balsamic sauce. again, the sauce is what made it SO good.

IMG_3329

we made friends with a cute dog that kept begging for chips.

IMG_3330

he had some pretty impressive tricks!

IMG_3332

after our meal, we went and made aforementioned very important purchase. said purchase won’t be here for 5 to 7 business days, so i will blog about it later.

we then met up with some friends for some festival action. we had not one but TWO festivals on the agenda.

first up was the urban arts festival.

image

this was the first year they have held this festival so it was pretty tiny. it was fun to check out the local artwork, but there wasn’t much going on so we didn’t stay long.

next up was the living traditions festival.

image

this festival is a celebration of authentic and traditional folk and ethnic arts.. but really, it’s a whole lot of different ethnicities of food in one spot. the only reason we went was for dinner, as the rest of the festival was kinda meh.

IMG_3339

it’s all about the food anyway, right? i waited in the vietnamese line because they were churning out some amazing looking chicken kebabs.

IMG_3341

by the time i got to the front of the mile-long line, they informed me they were out of kebabs! ugh. i settled for a chicken bowl over vermicelli noodles.

IMG_3348

this was actually really delicious! i wasn’t so sad about missing out on the kebab afterall.

IMG_3349

marshall channeled his heritage and got some mexican.

IMG_3342

we all sat on the curb and ate our selections. it’s fun that we could all get such different cuisines all in one place. plus, the food was tasty and authentic!

IMG_3351

after filling our bellies, we went back to kristen’s porch and enjoyed the warm evening outdoors. i wish summer would get here already.. but it was cold and rainy again sunday. oh well, i will take what i can get when it comes to sunshine!

thanks for reading such a long post.. when there are 3 events in one day, it’s bound to take awhile to talk about!

Q~

what was the highlight of your weekend?

the Mutt Strut looks SO fun – your pups are so cute. and an expo!! of course!

this weekend we took Basil to his first off leash dog park, and he was much more SHY than I thought he would be. usually out on walks we meet LOTS of pups and he is friendly and wants to get to know them all… I think we’ll have to keep visiting and see if he loosens up :)

  12. May 23, 2011 4:17 pm

Your pups were the cutest in the crowd.

There’s only one thing worse than being told that they ran out of what you wanted…that the person JUST BEFORE YOU got the last one. I seriously have almost gone postal. But usually in true Deb form, I say something like “Wow, really, thank you so much for telling me that- you just made me feel even worse than I would have otherwise!!!” Then they spit in my food. sigh.

  13. May 23, 2011 4:22 pm

i love your pups! i cannot believe it’s nearly june, i better buy my beach tix already and stop procrastinating! excited to hear the deets on your ‘purchase’ the highlight of my weekend was finding this neighborhood bar called round corner cantina. it’s amazing and the food is perfect summer fare. loved just sitting at the bar having a couple drinks. i need to treat myself to that more often, i think the last sip i had was like 2 months ago?!

  22. May 23, 2011 5:20 pm

This weekend was wonderfully lame! After back-to-back marathons, I relished in utter nothingness. The highlight of my weekend was my hair cut on Saturday. I got a straight ‘do for the day, which was totally exciting for us curly-haired folk.

That doggy expo looked like something I would’ve been at hands down – with or without dogs. What a fun day! God, I need to purchase a home so I can get a dog!!! I’m nuts about dogs, but now that I don’t live at home with my pupster anymore, I’m dogless and sad.

  23. May 23, 2011 5:38 pm

I want a dog!! Hub and I actually looked at some puppies yesterday, and that just might have been the weekend highlight (it was a low-key weekend!).

  24. May 23, 2011 5:41 pm

Awe, Strut your Mutt looks so fun! I wish we had something like that in my area….

  25. May 23, 2011 5:59 pm

summer festivals are the BEST! so glad you got to show off your dogs, try a new sandwich place, go to the festivals, hang with friends – what summer is all about.
we had rain and sun all mixed up this weekend. i worked (long weekend here) but also saw two fun movies, so it was a good mix. and the best weather/time of year is yet to come!
    have a great eve, j!

  26. May 23, 2011 6:14 pm

You had a busy weekend! Strut your Mutt looks hilarious!

Highlight of my weekend — dancing for hours on Saturday night at a wedding reception.

  27. May 23, 2011 6:17 pm

I think I know what the purchase is! But maybe it’s because I’m in the Janetha mob…

I think it’s hilarious penny lives Marshall so much. Watch out there. Turn around, and they might go run off together!

What a great weekend! Mine was so blah compared to our weekend together last week! Sigh…..

  28. May 23, 2011 6:22 pm

Ugh, you’re killing me! I want to know what the secret purchase was now!!

Looks like you had a great Saturday! Fun, festivals, and good food! Sounds like my kind of day!

Most of my weekend was spent cleaning, but the highlight was my 5 mile run on Saturday morning. The weather was perfect and it felt great to just run for the fun of it!

  29. May 23, 2011 6:26 pm

I just played the video and our pup Silas started whining along with her! Makes me wonder what she was “saying”!!

  30. May 23, 2011 6:30 pm

awww, strutt your mutt sounds awesome! i wish there was something like that in madison.

the highlight of my weekend was our friends’ couples shower and then going out after with all of my friends! it was SO nice to see everyone.

  33. May 23, 2011 6:44 pm

The highlight of my weekend was running 7 miles :D

I’m so jealous of all your festivals!

  39. May 23, 2011 8:03 pm

Haha…I just played the video and my border collie/blue heeler, Lenny thought it was his sister(Abigail, a cavalier) whining, so he came up and started giving her kisses to comfort her. When he realized it wasn’t her, he stared at the screen in confusion! It was too cute!

I am also a fellow Utahn and I LOVE YOUR BLOG! Your posts are really fun and informative!

The highlight of my weekend was camping at Yuba Lake and taking some time to relax.

    Have a great week :)

Tyler, Kaia & I went to toasters Saturday after the cystic fibrosis walk, we must’ve just missed you guys! And I also ordered the turkey avocado. And Tyler & I both raved about the balsamic sauce. Ha. That place is delish!

  53. May 24, 2011 5:32 am

Haha, love the title “Strut your Mutt”. So cute! Sounds like a fun weekend :-)

Looks like you had a wonderful day! I’m happy the weather held up for you. Saturday was beautiful in NY too. We’ve had a bunch of CRUMMY weather lately. I think the highlight of my weekend was actually soaking in some of the sunshine as I explored my new town.

  59. May 24, 2011 8:22 am

I planted my flower pots this weekend. Highlight. I know. I’m like 80 years old. I heard the living traditions festival has AMAZING food. xoxo

Love the Strut your Mutt! I dogwalk/petsit as basically “my job” though it just morphed into that until suddenly I was making enough money to not work elsewhere. Exercise, animals and fabulous “getaways’ in amazing houses!

Had to laugh about Penny whining…I walk a dog that sometimes refuses to leave her owners side or goes out, pees and runs back to the house.

No bassets though 9: Lots of goldens, terriers, collies and of course mutts…

One last thing (sorry!). Just saw a Seinfeld repeat about an old lady buying the last marble rye bread in front of jerry and then he mugs her for it. Reminded me of your chicken kebab saga :)
Highlight of the weekend: Two warm, sunny days in a row…finally

  71. May 24, 2011 6:20 pm

Awwwww, Penny!!! She is what my family would call a “traitor” dog. A dog that clearly is infatuated with someone other than their “master” :P Also, I love the idea of the strut your mutt event!! Maybe I should organize one in Moncton. I much rather watch dogs than people any day. Just today I was at a rugby game and spent the whole time cooing over an adorable black miniature poodle that was there instead of watching the game. I wanted to steal it.
