fish fiesta for two.

April 28, 2011

hey guys! i just wanted to take a minute and post my fish tacos from last night. they were nothing short of amazing and i just have to share the simple recipe (if you can call it that) with you all.

i had never made fish tacos at home, but they are a restaurant favorite of mine. because i was able to make them myself, they ended up being healthy, no-sugar-added and AMAZING.

IMG_2072

ingredients:

  • 1/2 – 3/4 lb fresh opah (or other flaky fish)
  • 2 tsp olive oil
  • 1-2 tsp old bay seasoning
  • 3 limes
  • 1/4 head of cabbage (any color), chopped
  • small bunch of fresh cilantro, chopped
  • ~ 1/2 cup plain greek yogurt (or sour cream)
  • one avocado, mashed
  • ~1/2 cup pico de gallo
  • ~1/2 cup salsa
  • enough cheese for sprinkling
  • a can of black beans for a side dish
  • 6-8 corn tortillas (depending on how hungry your husband is)

IMG_2055

directions:

i coated both sides of the fish in olive oil, the juice of one lime and the old bay seasoning, then lined a pan with foil and placed the fish in the center.

IMG_2026

i popped the fish into my oven with the broil set to high.

then i got to work on the fixins.

for the cabbage slaw, i simply combined the cabbage, cilantro and juice of one lime.

IMG_2028 IMG_2031 IMG_2037

tossed it together and that’s it! it was ready.

IMG_2065

the greek yogurt, mashed avocado, pico de gallo and salsa are real difficult.. they all have the same directions: place in condiment bowl with a spoon.

IMG_2064 IMG_2061

whew, that was tough!

tortilla time! so glad i found these locally made, sugar free corn tortillas!

IMG_2040

i heated each one briefly in a cast iron skillet—but i am sure a microwave would do the trick.

IMG_2042IMG_2058

once the fish was cooked through, i flaked it with a fork.

IMG_2059

i diced the final lime into quarters to serve with the tacos.

IMG_2066

and put some mexican cheese in a little dish.. i just used this cheese because i had it on hand, although cotijo would have been delicious!

IMG_2062

i warmed the black beans and served them as a side dish, because fiber is our friend.

assembly time!

IMG_2068 IMG_2071

the assembly process is all about personal preference. i did it in this order: greek yogurt, avocado, pico, salsa, fish, cabbage slaw, lime.

IMG_2074

these fish tacos did not disappoint.

IMG_2073

i am so glad i branched out and made a restaurant meal at home! this meal came together in less than twenty minutes and the tacos ended up being more delicious than most restaurant fish tacos i’ve tried.

Qs~

is there anything you always order at restaurants but have never made at home? what’s holding you back?

or..

what popular restaurant items do you make at home?

  5. April 28, 2011 12:23 pm

Cilantro + Lime is THE best. Makes anything special :) (I think that is Cafe Rio’s trick. haha)

    Love this idea!

My fav restaurant meal I make at home is: chicken spinach enchiladas-SO delish.

Those fish tacos look great! And so easy! I’ve always stayed away from fish tacos because it never appealed to me, the fish and tortilla…but I’m gonna have to break down and try it! I love quesadillas and fajitas, I guess i didn’t want to bother getting all of the ingredients! I need to do it

These look so good — and you had excellent topping choices!

Honestly fish in general is something I order in restaurants quite often but do not make at home — I always end up overcooking it and then it tastes like rubber.

  17. April 28, 2011 1:31 pm

I have always wanted to make fish tacos! You have inspired me! Thanks for the great recipe!

  18. April 28, 2011 1:35 pm

Never though about making fish tacos, but I love trying to cram things in a tortilla. I always end up putting way too much in it and then it tears or bursts through the bottom. I’m special like that.

I wonder if it’s possible to make healthy yellow thai curry?

  19. April 28, 2011 1:52 pm

My boyfriend and I (both vegetarians) eat fish about twice a year.. if even. I used to love fish tacos. We may have to try this sometime.

  20. April 28, 2011 1:57 pm

Yum I love fish tacos! I love making my own version of a calazone using flat out wraps, or a salads by adding in some of the ingrediants they do that I would never think of. I am tempted to try to make seared ahi tuna but I am afraid it might be a dissaster.

  21. April 28, 2011 1:57 pm

Def. trying this recipe. Looks awesome! Something I make that you can get in any type of mexican restaurant is homemade fajitas. Also chips and homemade salsa are the best!

  22. April 28, 2011 2:03 pm

i have never had fish tacos before, but those look sooo good! i think i need to come over to your house for all my meals from now on

  24. April 28, 2011 2:22 pm

What a great recipe! This is something I would definitely make at home :-). This is not necessarily healthy but I always love the quesadilla explosion salad at chilis. I’d love to remake it in a healthier version.

  25. April 28, 2011 2:39 pm

Yum! Seth orders fish tacos all the time when we eat out, so I bet he would love this recipe.

Yum! When I made my homemade fish tacos, the girls LOVED them and Eric says they are better than any restaurant ones that we have tried. And I can’t believe I made something before you did… usually I am running to your blog to copy a recipe! ;)

  29. April 28, 2011 3:16 pm

I’m always getting inspiration from restaurant meals. Or, getting inspiration thrust upon me from restaurant meals. I WILL recreate my husband’s favorite curry mussels dish!

  30. April 28, 2011 3:20 pm

Sushi. Have never made it at home. Scared to cook with raw fish AND to make the rolls. I have made vegetarian sushi rolls and spring roll wraps, but never true sushi. I need to know a fishmonger in order to do that i think :)

Your fish tacos look….stellar! And so happy that got the satisfaction of making them at home and doing it BETTER than restaurants!

  31. April 28, 2011 3:41 pm

I’ve always wanted to try fish tacos! These look like a winner-so fresh and delicious!

    Love u to pieces!!

  33. April 28, 2011 4:20 pm

these look amazing! :) I love warming the tortillas in a skillet – good flavor.

  34. April 28, 2011 4:30 pm

These look fantastic! I’ve never made them at home either, but you may just have inspired me to give it a try – looks easy peasy!

  35. April 28, 2011 4:35 pm

I think Old Bay seasoning is kind of magic. Like Sriracha (but not as good as Sriracha of course, because I think I’d even add it to my coffee if I was cognizant enough at 4 am to try it).

As for restaurant food that I always eat, but never make myself, it would have to be whole wheat bread. Now that I’ve typed it, it seems a little tame, but I’m really quite intimidated by bread making. I’m really picky about bread, so I shouldn’t be so that I could quit being such an obnoxious customer, but the whole yeast, dough, cooking thing just makes me scared.

I didn’t really time it–just as long as it took to prep everything else. maybe 15 minutes, tops.

  41. April 28, 2011 6:16 pm

Those look fantastic! Thanks for sharing the recipe!

I adore fish tacos. LOVE LOVE LOVE

I’ve never heard of opah. I thought I knew fish!

  49. April 29, 2011 1:36 pm

Mmm, I love fish tacos! I’ve never had opah before. I’d actually never even heard of it until Matt cooked some up last week! He tweeted about it and I could’ve SWORN he said his OPRAH was delicious! Lol!

I really want to try making baked tofu! I love getting it from the WF’s hot bar, but I’ve only cooked with tofu a few times and I kinda intimidates me a bit. :-/

One thing I wish I could make is the Bang Bang shrimp from Bone Fish Grill! Those little buggers are insanely delicious!
