hello, november.

November 1, 2010

i love november.

it (usually) marks the beginning of snowboarding season (although the snow has been falling later and later each year).

it gets cold enough for me to break out my favorite peacoats and slouchy boots.

there are tons of cute harvest-inspired decorations everywhere.

it is the month with the best foodie holiday around.

it makes me want to bake (but then again, what doesn’t make me want to bake?).

here are some other things november brings:

good nutrition month

georgia pecan month

national peanut butter lover’s month

national pepper month

raisin bread month

vegan month

the first week of november is national fig week. the second week of november is national split pea soup week.

how about the first week of daily holidays? sure, ok.

november 1=national vinegar day & national fried clams day

november 2=national deviled egg day

november 3=national sandwich day

november 4=national candy day

november 5=doughnut appreciation day

november 6=national nachos day

november 7=bittersweet chocolate with almonds day

now you know. i am not sure who makes this stuff up, but i am sure glad they do. i love following the different food holidays and celebrating when i can.

while i didn’t really want to fry up any clams for dinner, i did want to celebrate national vinegar day! i love all types of vinegar, balsamic being my favorite.

IMG_0173

i recently saw mandi make some balsamic meatballs over in itzy’s kitchen and it reminded me that i have been wanting to make meatballs for awhile now! i have also seen these made on the newlywed chef.

balsamic glazed turkey meatballs.

slightly modified from crepes of wrath.

meatballs:

  • 1.25 lb ground turkey breast (93% lean) *you can use chicken or beef if you want
  • 1/3 cup egg substitute
  • 1 (6 oz) can tomato paste
  • 2 T dried basil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup whole wheat bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup shredded parmesan cheese
  • fresh ground sea salt & black pepper (generous amounts of both)

glaze:

  • 1 (6 oz) can tomato paste
  • 1 T olive oil
  • 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 2 packets of stevia

this dish was super simple. i mixed all the ingredients except the turkey in a bowl.

IMG_0161

i added the turkey and mixed it well. with my hands.

IMG_0164

next, i made them into balls and placed them on a baking sheet. meatball tip: use a cookie scoop.

IMG_0168

this way, all your balls will be the same size and will cook in uniform. portion them out and then lovingly shape them with your hands so they are nice and round.

IMG_0169

i whisked the glaze in a small bowl. i tweaked the measurements for the glaze because i wanted to have some leftover for drizzling.

IMG_0176

i slathered a generous amount atop each meatball.

IMG_0181IMG_0179

i baked the balls at 325 degrees 30 minutes and then they weren’t quite done so i cranked the oven to350 degrees and let them bake ten minutes more.

IMG_0214

meanwhile, i got to work on the side dishes.

keeping in theme with the italian meatballs, i made up a simple italian couscous.

IMG_0213

italian couscous.

  • 1/2 T olive oil
  • 1 clove garlic, grated
  • 1 bunch green onions, chopped thin
  • ~10 jarred sun dried tomatoes, chopped rough
  • ~1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped rough
  • 1 cup low sodium chicken broth
  • 1 cup whole wheat couscous
  • fresh ground sea salt & black pepper

i like to chop the onions all the way up to the green to add some color.

IMG_0182

i put a saucepan over medium-high heat and heated the oil. i added the garlic and onions and sautéed for a few minutes.

IMG_0183

meanwhile, i diced my basil and tomatoes.

IMG_0189IMG_0186IMG_0187

next, i added the tomatoes and basil and let that cook for a minute, stirring the whole time.

IMG_0190

i added the chicken broth.

IMG_0191

when it came to a boil, i added the couscous.

IMG_0195

i removed the pan from the heat, covered and let sit for about 10 minutes so it could cook. when it was done, i fluffed the couscous with a fork and seasoned generously with salt and pepper. i also added some tomato & basil mrs. dash. nice touch!

IMG_0202

perfect.

IMG_0206

IMG_0207

i steamed some broccoli while the couscous was sitting.

IMG_0205

i love it when i have perfect timing in the kitchen. by the time the couscous and broccoli were ready, the meatballs were done baking.  i heated the remaining glaze on the stove in a small saucepan and used it to drizzle over everything.

marshall loves garlic bread, so i broiled a couple slices of garlic infused bread that i had topped with butter+johnny’s garlic seasoning.

IMG_0204

i had a slice of seedy grainy bread myself (which was also topped with butter+the garlic seasoning).

i buy these mini loaves of bread from the bakery.. they are $1.50 each and marshall and i each get our preferred kind of bread!

IMG_0200

this meal was different and fun.

IMG_0223

3 balls para mi!

IMG_0224

i forget how much i like couscous. i need to fix it more often, it is so versatile.

the bread was a nice touch.IMG_0227

i could eat broccoli every day. it never gets old. luckily, marshall agrees. he loves the stuff!

IMG_0225

successful celebration of national vinegar day! and we have plenty of leftovers, which makes me happy.

**********************************************************************

since it is national vinegar day and all, i want to share a laundry tip that uses vinegar! do your workout clothes ever get sooo funktastic that you can’t get the bad smell out? or do you ever accidentally leave a load in the washer overnight (or for 3 days, like me) and then the clothes smell all sorts of strange? well, vinegar to the rescue! simply add 1/4 cup vinegar to the load of wash, along with your detergent and fabric softener, and your clothes will come out smelling good as new! i promise, it works :)

**********************************************************************

before i go, i want to share these great halloween photos from one of my readers, marie. marie is awesome and the costume she pulled off (along with her husband and twins) proves just how awesome she is. check them out!

her twin boy and girl.. cookies:

hope your first day of november has been excellent! check ya later alligators.

Your meatballs look amazing. I never make them by hand, I should try it one of these days.

    Can’t wait till Friday!!!

  2. November 1, 2010 9:49 pm

i love cutting up potatoes and throwing them in the oven with some olive oil and garlic salt, party favorite!

i love november because you can really feel the holidays about to begin and days off work coming up. it would be better if i lived somewhere with seasons though, its supposed to be in the 80s this week. and it also means my birthday coming up! plus, it reminds me of the movie sweet november.

  5. November 1, 2010 10:06 pm

Those costumes are awesome! How creative!

I have the exact same color cutting board! Did you get it at ikea?

I like the laundry tip! In culinary school, I learned that a little vinegar in a pot of boiled eggs prevents them from cracking and a spoonful in boiling water make perfect poached eggs. And if your drain is clogged, mix vinegar with some baking soda and pour it down with hot water.

Carby side dish? potatoes! preferably french fries or mashed!

November? Lots of long weekends (veterans day, thanksgiving, etc…), officially acceptable to wear chunky knits and uggs, and its all the glorious thanksgiving food.

Packing for foodbuzz? just a few days!

  6. November 1, 2010 10:09 pm

November is hands down my favorite because in Texas we finally get some cold weather, AND Thanksgiving is the king of all holidays in my opinion! :)

  7. November 1, 2010 10:17 pm

I LOVE the idea of balsamic meatballs and your italian couscous. Can you just come cook for me?! :D

OMG, how freakin’ cute are their costumes!!! LOVE it!

I love november because of my birthday and thanksgiving!

    November 7th – you’ve gotta be kidding! YIPPEE! =]

  10. November 1, 2010 10:33 pm

Awesome vinegar tip for the wash! I have to say my work-out clothes can pretty stanky, so I’m def. going to try it!

  11. November 1, 2010 11:15 pm

do you just whip up these dinners off the top of your head?? everything always looks so delicious. i often don’t even know where to start but i’m getting there!

  12. November 1, 2010 11:35 pm

It is vegan month! Vegan MoFo for those in the KNOW! ;)

    1. Household tip: wash your bananas with dish soap to avoid fruit flies!

    2. Favorite carby side dish? Mashed, baked, souffled sweet potatoes!

    3. Love november? Blustery, windy, leafy days and savory sage and pumpkin filled Thanksgivings!

Good one to know on the fruit flies! I hate those darn things and they are around here alot lately….grr.

  13. November 1, 2010 11:37 pm

Eee!! That is ate most freaking adorable costume ever!!! I’m in love with this Marie. Her kids are so freaking cute, I just wanna pinch their cheeks! And nibble on them, mmm. Okay, head out of the gluttony gutter.

Favorite carby side would be good bread. And winter squash, roasted.

  14. November 2, 2010 12:30 am

when i used to cloth diaper skylar, yes, this is alot of work for anyone contemplating it but it saves the landfills! but anyway, I used to use vinegar in w/ my dipes every now and then, cuts the stink factor :)

Mrs Dash makes great blends! I use them all the time. No salt, love it.

The glaze for these meatballs…oh yeah baby. I am all about sauces, glazes, dips, dressings, that’s all i needed to see, I am in for just making the glaze!

I love Nov b/c we go away every year for Dec so Nov is my last “real” month of work!

  15. November 2, 2010 2:40 am

Fav carb on the side would be quinoa or roasted sweet potatoes love um! I love November because its mine and my blogs birthday! x x

  16. November 2, 2010 4:39 am

I suck when it comes to house tips, because i never dust or clean a thing. But I wanted to say that the milk and cookies costumes are amazing.

  17. November 2, 2010 4:44 am

today is national deviled egg day? I must go get started!! They are my favorite! Oh and you are brillliant, thank for the vinegar tip, trust me, my husbands cycling gear needs it BAD!!

    Happy November!

  18. November 2, 2010 4:53 am

Yay for November! It’s officially the start of the Holiday Season. Fa La La La La!!! :)

Haha, OMG that is the cutest family I’ve ever seen.

Happy Day to you my love!

  19. November 2, 2010 5:14 am

    November 6 = Heather’s Birthday!!! Yay!!

My favorite carby side is bread. I heart bread. Seriously. It’s awesome. :)

  20. November 2, 2010 5:15 am

Whoop whoop to the shout out to my girl Mandi! I have been wanting to make those meatballs for Josh ever since I saw Mandi post about them. What a beautiful meal. Who doesn’t love garlic bread? I need some of that spread. OH my cuteness! That is the best family costume set I’ve ever seen. Love it.

    1. do you have any random household tips to share with the class? I use simple soap and water to clean my stainless steel appliances. As long as you dry it right away with a dish towel- it works just as well as an expensive stainless cleaner. I also always use white vinegar and water on my wood floors (although this only works on certain kinds of wood)

    2. what is your favorite carby side dish? pasta? potatoes? couscous? rice? something else? potatoes fo sho

    3. why do YOU love november? I do love thanksgiving and spending time with my family :)

Have a great day pretty lady!

I looked at those balls on Erica’s blog just before seeing them here again! Def need to make.
Great tip on the workout clothes/vinegar–definitely have that habit of leaving stanky workout clothes in the wash for days! You can also clean coffee makers w/ vinegar…guess that is my ‘tip’!
Between these “balls”, Julie’s roasted veggies and Mama Pea’s baked goodies, I could be a very happy girl!
Favorite carby side is mom’s sweet potato casserole w/ marshmallows, for sure!
November rocks because the countdown to the holidays begins and it starts (usually) cooling down in Florida!

  22. November 2, 2010 5:52 am

Ah your photo tutorials are always my favorite :)

Random household tip….I use a mix of vinegar, lemon juice and water to clean my counters. It disinfects and smells purrrrdy. No crazy chemicals either!
Carby side dish….hmmmm anything? I love pasta, brown rice, couscous, millet, yams. I could go on for days.
I love that November means that it’s almost Christmas! And the return of Uggs!

  23. November 2, 2010 6:23 am

Ahhh OMG I want kids just to make them wear that cookie costume. So freaking cute.

When I was a kid we had the most badass ginger cat named Couscous and whenever my mom made the stuff for dinner my brother would tell me I was eating our cat. I love the stuff, but whenever I eat it I still think of my all-time favorite kitty!!

Fave carby side dish = bread fo sho. I’m not much of a rice or potatoes person!

  24. November 2, 2010 6:43 am

That looks like a really good dinner! I should make couscous to have with the leftover meatballs from last night’s dinner. Yum!

My favorite carby dish is definitely pasta. I love pasta. I could eat it every. single. day.

I love November because it’s my birthday month! According to your little list up there, my birthday is doughnut appreciation day. I’m totally not a big fan of doughnuts, so I think that and national nachos day should switch, just for me. ;)

  25. November 2, 2010 7:06 am

Marie and her family are awesome! I love that idea!

Thanks for the monthly holidays – I know I will be celebrating quite a few of those.

As for carby dishes, they are usually my main dish. But I love bread, quinoa, couscous, oats, sweet potatoes, and squash!

  26. November 2, 2010 7:18 am

Aww, the cookies and milk costumes are SO cute! HAHA!

My favorite carby side dish is anything with rice! However, that couscous looks really good, even though I’ve never had it before, so that is on my list to try, fo shiz!

I love November because it feels so “festive”. I also love cute sweaters and crispy air and THANKSGIVING! This year, especially, Thanksgiving will be awesome because I can E-A-T whatever I want… And. I. will ;)

  27. November 2, 2010 7:18 am

I’m so glad you liked the meatball recipe! They are so easy and so yummy! Yours look awesome =)

Balsamic vinegar is my fave type of vinegar too! It is so good and goes with anything.

  28. November 2, 2010 7:20 am

I love the cookies and milk costumes!!

  29. November 2, 2010 7:25 am

ooh, i LOVE couscous – especially Israeli couscous. It’s bigger and doughier. Yum.!

November is my favorite month, too. Thanksgiving has ALWAYS been my favorite holiday, I love the weather, the football, the food, the family get togethers.

I LOVE those cookie costumes :) So adorable!

  30. November 2, 2010 8:24 am

YUM! those meatballs look delicious! <3

and that family is so cute as cookies & milk! :)

  31. November 2, 2010 8:34 am

Dinner looked delicious! YUM! :) Thanks for sharing the recipe!

  32. November 2, 2010 9:05 am

oh my gosh, remembering this recipe! those looks awesome!!

my fave carby side is definitely bread of any time! and i love november bc who doesn’t love thanksgiving? family, food, and time off work? i’ll take it!

  33. November 2, 2010 9:36 am

My favorite carby side dish is anything with potatoes….mainly because that means there is butter or other types of delicious toppings:)
I love November because a lot of family time, food and because all of the good movies start coming out in theaters!

I love that you post the different national food holidays! Does Marshall get into the different food holidays with you?

  34. November 2, 2010 9:59 am

Thanks for the vinegar tip! Um, when I was a poor single mom I used to make my own laundry detergent – the first time I made it my then 5 year old daughter thought I was making macaroni and cheese, because you shred Fels Naptha soap into water on the stove. I used it for years – until I married my husband and he wanted to know what the snot looking bucket of crap was next to the washer!

If you are curious, here is how to make it:

    http://www.thefamilyhomestead.com/laundrysoap.htm

I always thought my clothes came out smelling so clean with this soap – and at one cent per load, you can’t beat the price!

And I just made split pea soup!

  35. November 2, 2010 10:07 am

Nice balls! I stole your idea tonight for shaping them with black bean fritters I made with purreed beans, tahini, chopped veggies and cornbread mix. THANKS!

  36. November 2, 2010 11:10 am

Adorable costumes! oh and I think vingear is right up there with mayo as my least favorite foods! blech!

  37. November 2, 2010 11:11 am

First of all that cookie and milk family is so stinkin cute! I love it. And second of all those balls look delicious ;)

  38. November 2, 2010 11:26 am

I’m horrible about leaving my clean clothes in the washer. Do you think the vinegar might fade of damage some of the clothes though?

Marie, I want to be in your family! Those costumes are so fun. Best costume award goes to you guys.

    • November 3, 2010 11:36 am

I don’t think so, because white vinegar is not very harsh. Although I don’t want to give my word! I have been doing it for months with no problems.

  39. November 2, 2010 11:45 am

    What an adorable family!!! Ahh!
There is something so satisfying about meatballs – love them!

  40. November 2, 2010 12:05 pm

THanks for sharing the foodie holidays…I would have never found them on my own! And do we REALLY need a candy day 4 days after halloween? I need detox!!

    Questions:
    1. I have no tips.
    2. Fav side dish is definitely either brown rice or couscous!
    3. I love November because of the crisp weather and the start of holiday season! I think I’ll put on Pandora Christmas right now…:)

  41. November 2, 2010 12:12 pm

omg, I think I needed to not know about nacho day! :)

  42. November 2, 2010 1:09 pm

I am loving that meatball glaze! Simple is the way to go. My ice cream scoop is broke but when I get a new one I’ll definitely try that tip out.

  43. November 2, 2010 1:25 pm

Mmmm I can’t wait for Deviled Egg day!!!!!!!!

November holds a special place in my heart because it’s Lung Cancer Awareness Month and since my mom passed away from lung cancer, it continues to be motivation for me to NOT smoke and to hopefully help motivate others to quit. I’m going on 21 months smoke-free.

  44. November 2, 2010 1:53 pm

My fav carby sidedish is BREAD… mmm. Or oatmeal. :)

I love november for one of your reasons, snowboard season is within site! We’ve got two resorts open out here now, just not quite within day trip reach. Soon… very very soon!

  45. November 2, 2010 2:06 pm

Those cookies and milk costumes are TOO cute! Love that! haha

And those meatballs topped with balsamic vinegar deliciousness- yum!

I am looking forward to sweaters and cuddling in November!

  47. November 2, 2010 2:51 pm

You always have the yummiest looking meals! I can’t wait to give the meatballs a try. Would you believe I’m 100% Italian and have never made a meatball in my life?! It reminds me that I have to get my mom’s recipe.

What an adorable family!! Very cute!

  48. November 2, 2010 2:53 pm

Loves: the ‘action shot’ of the cous cous. The Cookie’s N Milk famlia. The vinegar tip (I really needed that the other day when I dawned some sweats that I washed ohhhh, 3 months ago!?!?! and they smelled moldy! Gah! I could hardly stand myself but it’s really what I wanted to wear to that particular class, You, naturally.

November. Seasons? What seasons? If I’m not mistaken it’s about 85 and I’m wearing a tube dress. That’s the only downside to living in So Cal-= NO seasons.

Fave carby side dish- fries- sweet or regular.

My best household tip was a post I did a few weeks/months ago regarding berries: Will save me bajillions of dollars over the course of my lifetime:

    I love november because it means…..TURKEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

    • November 3, 2010 11:39 am

I post every single food holiday on my facebook each day, so if you really want to know them ALL you can check that out! I think doing every day on the blog would get irritating to some.. but I love it :)

  50. November 2, 2010 5:00 pm

    Those balls look excellent ;)

  51. November 2, 2010 5:35 pm

I love balsamic vinegar. I love reduced sauces. Together=bingo! I’ll have to adapt your recipe for veggie meatballs, or, maybe I’ll just put the sauce on some TJ meatless meatballs! Win. I love seeing cute costumes. Keep them coming!

  52. November 2, 2010 6:24 pm

Raisin bread month?! I have a whole new reason to love November.

i’m not a fan of november, random reasons.

    i love love love quiona..

  59. November 2, 2010 9:47 pm

Love food holidays!! PS Loved the Skeleton – you looked awesome! I got a good kick out of the shark too – way better than they bf’s costume – “a Ranger’s fan”.

  60. November 2, 2010 10:41 pm

November is my favorite month too, mainly because it begins with my birthday and it ends with Thanksgiving. AND it kicks off the Christmas season!

I was excited to learn that Nov. 1 is National Fried Clam Day. I’ve never tried a fried clam, but now I have an excuse. I’m too curious to wait till next year though…The fried clam search begins. :-)

Your meatballs look DELICIOUS. Thanks for the recipe!

Favorite carby side dish: potatoes in a variety of forms!

  61. November 2, 2010 11:14 pm

Those meatballs look great, as did your chicken puffs last week! Two recipes I definitely need to try!
I think my favorite carby side dish is probably mac and cheese – but not pasta. If not then probably couscous.
Household tip – rubbing alcohol can remove blood stains, especially on whites – but should be used carefully (it can remove color).
I love November because this year it is Yesvember :) And because Foodbuzz Blogger Festival is during November. There are more reasons, but I’ll stop there.
