rainy day workout.

October 23, 2010

i was originally planning on going to an amusement park today.  the rain spoiled those plans.

instead of hitting the roller coasters, i ate a lot of cereal, watched the food network for three hours (there are now several things on my to-make-for-halloween list), cleaned my house from top to bottom, and finally got cabin fever.

i decided to hit the gym and utilize all of the cardio equipment. i though it would be packed due to the rainy weather conditions, but the gym was actually surprisingly empty.

this was a good thing for two reasons:

one, i realized that i forgot to put on deodorant. yeah.. i know, guys, but i was already there! there was no going back. at least not many people were there to smell me.

and two, every last machine was available.. including the single, solitary rowing machine that i‘ve so badly wanted to try out.

here is my one hour cardio routine:

treadmill: 15 minutes

minute # speed MPH
0-1 6.0
1-2 6.5
2-3 7.0
3-4 7.5
4-5 8.0
5-10 repeat 1-5
10-15 repeat 1-5

rowing machine: 5 minutes

all i did was put it at a real hard resistance and rowed my little heart out. i had never been on a rowing machine before so i wasn’t quite sure what to do! i have watched people use it, so i figured it out quickly.. but routines are yet to come.

stairmill: 15 minutes

minute # level orientation
0-1 8 face front
1-2 8 face left
2-3 8 face back
3-4 8 face right
4-5 4 face front, double step
5-10 repeat 1-5 repeat 1-5
10-15 repeat 1-5 repeat 1-5

elliptical: 15 minutes

minute # resistance speed MPH
0-1 10 6.5
1-2 11 7.5
2-3 12 7.5
3-4 13 8
4-5 14 8
5-10 repeat 1-5 repeat 1-5
10-15 repeat 1-5 repeat 1-5

stretch: 10 minutes

the end! it is a pretty entertaining way to kill time on a rainy day as well as torch 500 calories.

after my workout, i came home and ate some tasty protein & healthy carbs:

IMG_1649

one whole egg+4 egg whites scrambled.

IMG_1653

two pieces of dave’s killer bread toasted & topped with laughing cow cheese.

IMG_1654

eaten together, naturally.

IMG_1657

and followed by something sweet…

IMG_1660

banana, peanut butter & dark chocolate chips. hit the spot.

well, i have a non-dress-up halloween party to get to. enjoy your night!

I really like how you mixed up your cardio among the different machines. That’s a great idea for someone like me who can have a short attention span. My favorite cardio machine is probably the stairmill but I have been using the rowing machine since high school and it’s a great one too!

It’s been rainy here today too. On rainy days, I like to bake as well, and cozy up with a good brooding movie (oh alright, one of the twilight movies!).

Cardio machine for me is the treadmill. When it rains I love to bake!!!

i’ve yet to have dave killer’s bread yet. i am sure it is killer!

it’s been raining a lot lately. i get in a baking mood too, or a crockpot one!

I feel the same way about cardio, mix of “stair way to hell” (aka, stepmill and the treadmill). I hate the elliptical cause that movement feels so un-natural to me. steps and run/walking we do in our daily lives, so i find them useful.

I use rainy days as an excuse to wash my sheets and clean around the house. Sadly, I usually end up eating a lot, reading blogs, and watching food network or some trashy reality show.

I have always wanted to try the rowing machine out.. especially on back workout days. I’ve only ever seen guys at our gym use it for looong stretches of time. I think I would quickly tire since my legs are so much stronger than my upper body.

I am a huge fan of the elliptical. My knees hate the treadmill and the stairmill for long stretches. I also love baking when it’s gross outside.. or reading a good magazine in a bubble bath.. or curling up under the covers with a good movie. Rainy weather is the time to get cozy!

i’m so jealous of your non dress up halloween party! haha i hate dressing up for halloween! i know that’s horrible of me.

you’re so good about killing your cabin fever i would have totally stayed inside all day long haha

  7. October 23, 2010 8:39 pm

I love the stairmill too but my gym doesn’t have one! I’d probably say elliptical, but I use the treadmill most often.

And I love to sit on my porch, watch the rain, drink coffee, and read under a blanket. :) It’s supposed to storm tomorrow so may get to have my perfect day

I’m glad you got to try the rowing machine. They are great workouts. Make sure you know proper form (it’s easy to strain your back if you use it incorrectly).

Rainy days are for reading and making soup. :)

  9. October 23, 2010 10:15 pm

I love the stairmill! My current gym doesn’t have one though! :( So my favorite cardio machine is definitely the treadmill!

When it’s raining I love to cuddle up with a fluffy blanket, coffee, and a book/movie/tv shows. I want to do even when it’s not raining though ;)

  10. October 24, 2010 3:33 am

I love the treadmill, especially running with weights which I have just started to bring into my routine. I also love the cross trainer, been doing some killer intervals lately and loving it!

Rainy days………..hmmmmmmm……..well I love rainy days if I don’t have to go anywhere and can snuggle up and have a pj day on the sofa laptop + coffee + films = bliss x x

  11. October 24, 2010 5:03 am

Sorry about the rainy day, but at least you got your house cleaned :)
My favorite cardio machine is my boyfriend.

I had a banana w. pb & chocolate chips as my pre-run fuel today!

My favorite cardio machine is the treadmill, though I enjoy a few minutes here & there on the rowing machine :). My least favorite is the elliptical. I hate it!

I love to snuggle alone in bed with hot tea and movies & bake things when it’s raining :)

HAhaa, that’s funny you forgot deod! ;)

Rainy days are great for movies, napping, and baking!

You’re right – there were SO many Halloween-themed shows on The Food Network this morning!!! I was watching for a bit, but I enjoy the decorating shows best. I’d rather bake something easy (like from a Pillsbury, Betty Crocker or Duncan Hines box) and then decorate it really nicely. :)

i am obsessed with the cooking channel (esp jamie at home and chuck’s day off). my fave cardio machine is the treadmill & i am a movie junkie with huge mugs of tea on rainy days. it’s hard to get me moving on those days!

Baking is THE BEST way to kill time when it is raining! [YUM! There is nothing better than a hot cookie/scone/muffin on a cold, rainy day.]

  17. October 24, 2010 2:04 pm

Bummer about the rain spoiling your plans! I always get so excited to visit amusement parks.
Fave cardio machine is the treadmill!
I love to watch a movie or read foodie magazines on a rainy day.

  18. October 24, 2010 6:00 pm

I am definitely a treadmill girl, but the elliptical is a close second.

Great workout! Working out is a great rainy day energy booster, but so is baking!!

Treadmill is my favorite cardio machine.

  20. October 25, 2010 7:02 am

    mmmm. classic, comfort breakfast. <3

  21. October 25, 2010 7:08 am

That sounds like a fun cardio routine! I find the time goes by a lot faster with shorter workouts per machine (or intervals). :)

My favorites are either the treadmill or elliptical…seeing as how those are the two that I’m currently using the most, hehe.

When it’s raining I like to curl up on the couch with a blanket and watch movies. So typical! ;)

  22. October 25, 2010 7:50 am

dude, why is Utah getting so much rain??

I love the rowing machine. It’s such a fun change. I really like the cybex arc trainers and the stairmills but rarely do them because they are so freaking hard! hehe.

Rainy days – I love sipping hot tea while reading a book, curled up on my couch. Ahhh… It’s finally supposed to rain in NC this week and I wish i could stay home and do just that!

  23. October 25, 2010 8:41 pm

    Watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqVmMd7FdAA

Completely changed the way I use the rowing machine and now get a MUCH more effective (and brutal) workout out of it!

  24. October 26, 2010 5:54 pm

I love when divine intervention, um..intervenes and you get to do stuff you wouldn’t ordinarily do- like that machine. I can’t say I love the rower. Will check out SUsan’s recommended video though. Yes, there’s only ever ONE rower Never two! :-) LOVE me the stepmill …the neverending staircase- kicks my arse over and over.

Hey, at least your house is sparkly! :-)
