the kitchen.

August 28, 2010

i slept in until 10 AM today.  it was glorious!

upon waking up, i went into the kitchen and chopped an entire cantaloupe from the farmers market.  then i proceeded to eat half of it.

IMG_0904

i made myself useful and cleaned the kitchen while noshing on the melon.  once the dishes were done and the counters were cleaned, i made some french pressed coffee and a yogurt bowl for breakfast.

bird’s eye view.

IMG_0926

i sauced my java up a bit with some whole milk.

IMG_0930

i love this houndstooth mug that emily gave us as a wedding gift!

IMG_0928

in the bowl:

  • 1 (5.3 oz) container dannon greek yogurt (plain)
  • handful of TJ’s high fiber cereal
  • handful of nature’s indulgence vanilla nut granola
  • 1/2 of a banana + 1 TB crunchy peanut butter cut into mini banana sandwiches

IMG_0929

banana sandwiches make any meal more fun!

since my kitchen was actually clean today, i decided to finally give you all a glimpse of the renovations we completed before moving into our house.  things are not done quite yet, but they have come a long way.  it is a work in progress, that’s for sure!  we still have to get a new range, change all the light switches and electrical sockets and cover them, hang the window and door coverings and decorate the walls.

here are a few “before & after” shots.

before:

IMG_9519

after:

IMG_0907

as you can see, we took out the drop ceiling and florescent lighting.  we sheetrocked the new ceiling and added can lighting.  this really opened up the space and made it seem a lot bigger.

before:

IMG_9520

after:

IMG_0936

it may be hard to see the changes, but we took out the french doors that went out onto the deck and replaced them with a sliding glass door.  we tiled the floors and baseboards and painted the walls.  it is amazing what a few changes will do.  i love our kitchen table! we got it at RC Willey.

before:

IMG_9574

after:

IMG_0912

the previous countertops were hideous!  we replaced them with concrete countertops.  this little space shown above is now our “coffee station”.  the grinder, electric kettle and french press fit perfectly.  we use the cupboard above for mugs.

before:

IMG_9512

after:

IMG_0948

here is another look at the countertop transformation.  sorry for the glare, we still need blinds.  in the before photo above, you can get a good look at that drop ceiling that we took out.

before:

IMG_9510

after:

IMG_0943

we took out the closet doors that you see on the left of the before photo above (those doors cover the area where the washer & dryer are) and instead we hung tan linen curtains.  it really softened the room up.  i think the before photo above has WAY too much white and reminds me of a hospital.  the earth tone walls, countertops and floors really set a nicer mood in the kitchen. we are fortunate that we were able to leave the cabinets as-is,

before:

IMG_9515

after:

 IMG_0941

just another look. we need to get a kitchen rug!

before:

IMG_9575

after:

IMG_0942

IMG_0917

we traded the two small sinks for one large one.  i LOVE the sink! i also love the pull-out faucet. we got the sink from CSN stores (online) and the faucet from Costco.

before:

IMG_9576

after:

IMG_0937

i love this corner! in addition to loving the new countertops, i love what i was able to fit into this small space.

i’ve got my awesome spice rack (my sister got it for us as a wedding gift—from crate & barrel) and those four jars are filled with xanthan gum, chia seeds, guar gum and baking powder.  i love the little jars, they were also a wedding gift. the trivet was a gift from costa rica. we got the spoon holder in jamaica.

IMG_0913

i was also able to fit the toaster, kitchenaid & dog treat jar into the corner.

IMG_0914

before:

IMG_9578

after:

IMG_0938

this area is still a little cluttered, but i am a big fan of the aloe vera plant in my volcom pot, the fruit bowl my parents brought back from costa rica, and the stainless steel canisters.  in the canisters: whole wheat flour, muesli and protein powder.

the only art on any of our walls so far is this coffee art that was a wedding gift from kristen’s mom & step dad. we love it.

IMG_0945

here are a couple close-up shots of the tile, countertops and backsplash.  my brother did all the work.  he has amazing talent! IMG_0947 IMG_0922 IMG_0920IMG_0921

hope you liked taking a look at the renovations! it is no dream kitchen, but it is DEFINITELY a dream come true for me.  i have been longing for my own kitchen for ages.  i am happy to finally have a kitchen (and house!) to call my own.  i am also happy we were able to update it to make it more “our style”.  maybe one day i will be able to afford a dream kitchen.. but for now, this is a great start!

hope you all enjoy the rest of your weekend. check ya later!

Qs~

1. what are some items that would be in your dream kitchen? i would have a hanging pot rack, a pot filler (faucet that is over the stove so you can fill pots with water!) and a giant walk-in pantry.

2. what types of art do you have hanging on your walls? we need to get on that.. our walls are bare! we bought an awesome painting in mexico while on our honeymoon. i can’t wait to frame it.  we also plan to purchase two large canvases that are playing cards: a kind and a queen.

Oh my goodness–At first glance I thought ‘there’s no way that’s her actual kitchen. This must be her make-believe virtual ‘dream’ kitchen.’ WOW!!!! Especially because the first after photo looks a little fake…as in it looks WAY too beautiful to be true. I’m moving in :)

  2. August 28, 2010 4:48 pm

Wow, you’ve been busy in the kitchen. It looks STUNNING!! Very warm & inviting : )

  3. August 28, 2010 4:49 pm

ohhh gorgeous! I love it! Wanna come redo our kitchen? hehe. I would dream of all the same things you dream up. Hanging pots rack YES, Walk in pantry YES, pot filler HECK YA, and I’d probably add in a temperature controlled mini wine fridge. Yes, I am a wino!

  4. August 28, 2010 4:49 pm

OMG your new kitchen is incredible. It literally looks like a completely different kitchen than in the previous pictures. You are SO lucky!

mmm mm cantaloupe. I ate like a whole one today- fantastic ;) Your kitchen looks AMAZING. I love the tile and the counter top is beautiful (and I love that the puppers are in both the before and after pictures ;)). I love the kitchen I have now. We have silestone counter tops and stainless appliances. Plus it overlooks the family room, so I always feel like I’m a part of the action! We have a lot of paintings Josh’s sister has done as well as some random “modern” art paintings (shapes and stuff).

  13. August 28, 2010 5:24 pm

    I kind of love it.
The first kitchen renovation I did when I got my house was the countertop–it makes a huge difference!
As for art, I have a picture in my kitchen from my mom that I swear was made for me. It’s this big artsy photo of an avocado, asparagus and a block of parm. It’s pretty much me in a photo as food ;)

    Love your kitchen!!!

Your kitchen is beautiful!!! Love the coffee cup paintings! We have a big “spaghetti clown” in our kitchen. My favorite art work in our house are two big fashion sketches of couture gowns.

LOVE the kitchen renovation! You did such a great job of opening it up and giving it a more natural feel.
I love having fun pieces that have memories behind them, like the spoon holder from Jamaica and items that were gifts – Tyler and I try to incorporate pieces like that into our apartment.
    Have a fantastic weekend!

  35. August 29, 2010 12:57 am

My dream kitchen would have loads of counterspace, hanging pot racks and knife holders, a breakfast bar or big island, and top-end appliances. The kitchen is definitely going to be the part I will be looking at when I buy my own house!!

We have one really cool beta fish painting Nick’s parents gave us… but that is ALL we have! We’re looking to frame some wedding photos and get some more artwork soon :)

We are moving into a new home and want to get new kitchen counters and were thinking about granite countertops but I love the look of the concrete ones! who did yours? Can you let me know? I wonder how it compares to granite?
    Thanks!

  46. August 29, 2010 3:05 pm

The kitchen looks awesome. I love the kitchen remodel – it looks so good! I’ve started watching a lot of home renovation shows lately. My dream kitchem would have a huge walk-in pantry, lots and lots of counter space, and well, prettiness. ;)

  47. August 29, 2010 5:39 pm

JANETHA!! Your kitchen renovations are GORGEOUS!! Sorry for the excess of caps. I just think it’s stunning ;) Funny you say it’s no dream kitchen – my kitchen has tile peeling off the floor that I always trip over and currently infested with fruit flies. Ahhh the joys of renting with roommates :P

    1. My dream kitchen has an island, garburator, and lots of place to store all the excessive kitchen gadjets and appliances I own in this dream world.

    2. I have prints of famous oil paintings (impressionism, my favourite) I have original paintings and framed photographs of places I’ve visited, but now I want to start with a collection of places I’ve lived. Been in search of the perfect oil on canvas by a local artist of the Toronto skyline :)

  48. August 29, 2010 6:33 pm

Oh my goodness! What an amazing change!!! I’m soooo impressed. It looks like our dream kitchen. The kitchen is the ONE room we haven’t renovated in our home. I want to soooo badly though. Dang thing called money getting in the way.

I love home renovations! The kitchen looks awesome!
I would like a walk in fridge and freezer, I never seem to have enough room or I’m always searching for what I need for a long time. Maybe I just need better organizational skills! We had a walk-in freezer in culinary school and I found these two other students making out there! whoops!
I got a lot of old vintage posters food companies like Morton Salt and Camapri at flea markets. A bargain too!

  51. August 29, 2010 7:37 pm

    That kitchen looks amazing!!!

Is it hard to replace a sink? I hate our current one and that’s big on my list of things to change in our house. I just don’t know how hard it would be. Like could Jason do it himself?

  52. August 29, 2010 7:51 pm

Beautiful kitchen, girl! I’m super jealous! I’m planning some before and after photos of my new place soon, but I didn’t do any renovations, just decorating:)
    1. My dream kitchen would def have a hot water dispenser (for all my hot tea) and a warming drawer…just cuz I thought they were cool when I babysat people with them in their kitchens:)
    2. My walls are pretty bare too–but Seth actually minored in art in college, so I have charged him with the task of creating some pieces for my apartment:)
