happy birthday, penelope jane!

August 18, 2010

on august 18, 2008, the best little bean was born. (yes, i love the synchronicity of her birthday, 8-18-8.. in case you wondered.)

10-21-08 005

on october 21, 2008, we picked her up from the airport.

10-21-08 028

for me, it was love at first sight.

10-21-08 026

for marshall, it was love at first sight.

 10-21-08 025

even for randy dog, it was love at first sight.

10-21-08 038

today is penny’s birthday! she is two.

IMG_0332

for her first birthday, i made pupcakes. you can see the post about that here.

8-18-09 051

this year, i baked her a cake.

IMG_0353

cheesy birthday cake for your pup.

an original recipe by janetha g.

ingredients:

  • 1.5 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup grated cheese
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • enough milk to make “batter” consistency—i used skim milk

directions:

place all ingredients in a bowl. mix well.

IMG_0286

you will have spectators.

IMG_0350

pour into a greased 8” cake pan.

IMG_0290

bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. when it is done, it should be golden brown and a toothpick should come out clean after inserting into the middle of the cake.

IMG_0347

while the cake bakes, take an obscene amount of photos of the birthday girl. and of her brother, we wouldn’t want to leave anyone out.

IMG_0300 IMG_0313 IMG_0317 IMG_0326

once the cake has cooled a bit, place it on a plate.

IMG_0349

spread a nice layer of natural peanut butter on top.

IMG_0351

crunchy, if you want to make your pooch happiest.

IMG_0355

adorn the cake with a “P” (or the appropriate letter) made of cheese.

IMG_0354

sing to the birthday girl, while teasing her with the delicious cake.

IMG_0357

let them eat cake!

IMG_0375

randy looks like he is a little deprived here, doesn’t he?

IMG_0386

pretty sure he was drooling.

IMG_0387

poor randy dog, so picked on.

IMG_0389

don’t be fooled. he ate his fair share of cake.

IMG_0361

this was by far the best dog cake i have made!

IMG_0372

i usually follow recipes, but this time i made up my own.  marshall and i tasted it and agreed it was the best yet. it had a great, soft consistency and didn’t taste like cardboard. double score.

in honor of penelope’s birthday, i am giving away this cool organic dog treat cookbook/cookie cutter set! i snagged one for the birthday girl and decided to give one away to one of my dog-lovin’ readers.

Happy birthday! Shes just as cute now as she was when she was a puppy…

I have Eddie, a 5 year old Shepherd Mix. I adopted him from the shelter when he was 1 and he was terrified of men. After 3 years, he loves everybody and is the kindest most gentle dog I’ve ever known. Without him, I don’t know where I’d be.

I have Milla a 2 year old mini doxie, whom I bought with Sean. I love her because she’s a prissy little bitch who is a big cuddler :)

    happy birthday penelope!

I have a 4 year old Maltese named Berklee. I love everything about her but especially the fact that she’s decided she’s not a morning dog, just like I’m not a morning person. We can both snooze in as late as we want :)

Aww happy birthday to dear Penelope!

My dog is named Chooey. We rescued her after she was abandoned in a cardboard box in the woods when she was just a few weeks old. She has such a zest for life and is always full of energy – such a blessing.

I have two dogs, both named after a video game; Morrowind. My golden retriever is named Vivec, while my border collie is named Daedra.

Thing I loved the most about Vivec is he always have fun on his head. He always – always – wants to play. He’s a crazy pooch, ball obsessed, that rarely, if ever, gets worn out. I adore his carefree attitude, even if he’s not as well-trained as I like. He still brings laughter daily into my life, so what more could I ask?

Daedra is the one that got me interested in dog sports, particularly obedience and agility. He’s so smart – so very intelligent, cunning and keen. Watching him, you can see him try to figure things out. His intelligence surprises me sometimes; he knows how to open doors, as well as close them, knows various words – you can’t say ‘ride’ without him perking and wanting to go – as well as various commands. He’s a lovely companion to have.

The loves of my life come in an extra large package and a tiny one.

Kronus is my 4 year old Italian Mastiff who has move energy than he knows what to do with. Always happy, especially to get a bath today which is a full body workout on it’s own. Towel tug of war, air dry while throwing a toy and running around like a mad man, lots of brushing. I never have to worry about being unsafe in my house. Plus, he gives full body hugs since he thinks he is small.

Roxy is my mini doxie whom is 5 big girl years old. She was born scared of the world. The last pup out of 2 litters and so tiny. The owner told me they never thought she would turn out so pretty…but who got Hot Dog of the Month in the Hot Diggity Dachshund Club, ROXY! She is in a calendar, she is a big deal. :) She is more like a cat and must be on my lap at all times. She warms my heart. She’s learned to hold her own, won’t eat without her big buddy. 120 lbs and 9 lbs they are a cool duo. I wish I could post a pic on here.

    Happy Birthday Penelope Jane!!!

This is TOO cute. Happy birthday!

I’m going to look at puppies/dogs with Kepa today. I’ve never made a dog a birthday cake before, but now I’m totally going to. That’s a seriously fun idea. :)

Aww, Happy Birthday sweet Penelope Jane! :)

I have a border collie/lab mix named Okie! Well, her full name is Okie Mae :) I love how everytime I come home she’s ready to give me a big hug and kiss (tricks she actually knows!), and without a doubt is a little genius! She actually knows a few Spanish words now haha !

I have Rambo, a (almost) 9 year old chiweenie and Lucy, an 8 1/2 year old 40 pound terrier mix. My dogs have oodles of personality and make me laugh every day. Lucy was abused before I got her, and she has come such a LONG way in the years I’ve had her. Rambo was my first dog that I got as an adult, and he is definitely a huge mama’s boy. They both are my heart and soul. <3

I had to comment on Penelope Jane even before I saw that you are having a great giveaway. You know I have a Penny too and I love the way she groans at me first thing in the morning when I rub her tummy – I could swear she’s saying “Morning, mom….please, please, please don’t stop!” My other favorite thing she does is play patty cake – she taught herself that and she trained me to do it! Happy Birthday Penny!
I have a terrier mix, Pookie and she know my routines. Every night when I take a shower, she lays by the bathroom door and when I get out, she hops in her bed which is right next to my side because she know’s I’m going to bed. I just loss my Jack Russell, Bo to cancer a just over 3 weeks ago but before that, I loved how he would “tell” me about his night every morning as I made coffee.

  24. August 18, 2010 10:46 pm

Penny is one lucky birthday pup! You were so sweet to make a cake! I feel like a negligent owner because I usually only give my dog a fried egg or piece of turkey on her birthday!

BUT, maybe I can redeem myself with some homemade organic dog biscuits? I hope so!

Cali is my 7-year-old yellow lab, and she’s the love of my life. She’s always “smiling,” and will pant in my face until I roll out of bed in the morning. She’s like a doggy breath alarm clock! (It does the job btw). :-D

  25. August 18, 2010 11:23 pm

    Happy Birthday Penny!

My dog is my little jewish princess. Her name is Kodi, but I call her Kodilah. She’s an english chocolate lab who loves to run in our backyard and sniff on the trails by our house. What I love about her is how soft she is and even when I’m not having a good day, or don’t want to go for a walk or be bothered; she is the one person who can bother me to snap out of it.

  26. August 19, 2010 12:39 am

Your pups look adorable! Happy Birthday to Penelope :) My dog’s birthday just passed and I didn’t get to bake her a cake. I’ll try your recipe some time this weekend to make up for it! Oh, and I have an American Eskimo named Mimi. She’s my little baby and I love her to death. The best quality about her is that she’ll always know if you’re feeling sad/upset and will always come to you and try to make you feel better. She’s like the… human whisperer. Haha!

  27. August 19, 2010 1:19 am

I have a shihtzu-bichon (likely part Maltese) cross that is the love of my puppy life. Her name is Daisy and I love everything about her……from the way she hugs me (paws on either side of my neck) and licks me when I’m upset to the way she wags herself off course with excitement when the Fiance gets home.

    I  my little puppy! 

Happy Birthday to Penelope!! My wonderful cockapoo, named Abraham Lincoln, will be 2 next Saturday – 8-28-08 – also a nice ring to it, eh? He’s a red headed cockapoo with a heart the size of San Francisco. I love him so much my heart hurts.
Our other boy is Sebastian Benjamin Brigham – a really big name for a not so big shih tzu/yorkie mix. He has balls of steel though – bring on them big dogs anyday! He turned four in June. For his first birthday we had a huge party and I made homemade dog treats in individual ‘doggie bags’ for all the doggie guests!

I love the way they interact with each other – loving, fighting, teasing, chasing – but I mostly love just cuddling on the couch with them or trying to work out while they crawl all around me. They are such a joy!

Anyway, pet birthdays are just as important in my family as people birthdays–decorations and all! We have Chauncey right now, and he turned four in October. He was a rescue, so we can’t be exactly sure what he is. It’s part jack russell terrier and chihuahua we think. At any rate, he’s like a little person. Plus, he’s so awesome to take to the old people’s home where my grandma is. Everyone loves him!

What a sweet sweet post. Jeff and I have our puppy Harley, she is a 12 years old lab/german sheppard mix. We addopted her when we first started dating.

Harley has been with us through everything, dating, college, long 13 hour car rides to see our parents, 3 apartmemts, establishing our jobs, getting married, buying our first house, having our little baby Jake (they are best buds!) & buying our second house.

I love that you love your puppies. This post made me cry. Harley was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in April. They gave her 2 weeks – 4 months. She is still going, she has slowed down quite a bit and is taking 4 pills a day for pain and swelling. We are taking it day by day. But, she still meets us at the door with her toy and her wagging tail EVERY SINGLE DAY! We love our baby girl and she loves us with unconditional and reckless abandon! She is the best thing ever! I encourage everyone with a pet to take some extra time to enjoy them – you just never know.

    Happy Birthday (Belated)!

I have a 3 year old golden retriever named Boston. He is the best dog ever!!! One of my favorite things is that when my husband goes out of town for work (weekly at least 1 night) my dear Boston cuddles me, but he puts his head on his daddy’s pillow!!! It’s so cute I almost can’t contain myself.

    BTW – You’d love my birthday numbers… 8/2/82

Happy birthday Penny! My pooch is an 11-year-old black standard poodle named Chip. He is the biggest sweetheart in the world, even if he can’t chase a stick to save his life! We call him “piggy on the bed” because he just spreads out over the entire bed and won’t move. This giveaway is so cute!

Happy Birthday Ms. Penelope Jane! She is adorable!
I have a miniature schnauzer named Rufio, like from the movie Hook.
I honestly can’t pick one thing I love about him. I guess I’ll go with his wet, sloppy wake up kisses. They always start my day with a smile! My hubby and I fell in love with him the second he chose us. We met the litter, and knew we wanted a boy so we were playing with him and all of his brothers. He marched right up to Solomon, crawled into his lap and rolled over for a belly rub. We were sold right away! He’s just so damn feisty, and we knew his boldness the day we met him meant he was the boy for us!

Love it!!! Happy Birthday Penelope!! She has to be one of the cutest little pups EVER… but I am madly in love with Randy! Bassetts are my dreams doggies!

Speaking of.. have you seen this? http://thepioneerwoman.com/blog/2010/08/mass-hysteria/

I thought of your doggie the whole time!

My doggie is a mini lab… well technically a Chihuahua, but I don’t like to be one of those blonde chicks with a little dog cliche, so I tell everyone he is a mini lab. EVERYONE BELIEVES ME!
He is a rescue so I think he is about 7? And is named Sailor Jerry.
Like I said, he is a rescue and came with an abusive past and A TON of issues. It took a long time for him to show any kind of happiness.. crazy, right? Now my favorite thing he does is be happy. Wag his tail, play with toys, and give me some puppy kisses.
    There is nothing like it!!

I have a 17 month old english yellow lab named Stella. I love everything about her, but one of the funniest things she does is her ‘old man’/’drunk sit’ – she has been doing it since she was a pup and I never get sick of laughing at her when she does it. There’s a pic of her doing it in this post haha. http://kristastes.wordpress.com/2010/07/08/stuffed-pigeons/

Aw I think it’s so sweet you bake for your dogs! I have a pit bull/Basenji mix named Sydney. I love how her whole body wiggles when she wags her tail. The more excited she is, the more she wiggles. Guard your breakables!

  67. August 19, 2010 11:07 am

Oh my gosh! She is the CUTEST puppy!!!!! Why can’t they stay puppies forever? :)

How fun! Happy Birthday Penelope Jane!

    I have 2 pups:

Pancheaux (Pancho with a cajun twist – I call him Panch, or Monkey Man) – he’s an 11 year old Shepherd/Hound Mix. He’s the old man of the house and I adore him. He’s been there through a LOT with me!

Jolee (I call her Jo Jo) – she’s a 3 year old Border Collie/Lab mix and she’s CRAZY! So much energy and so loving.

I couldn’t do without either one of them – they make me SO HAPPY!!

aww this is the CUTEST post ever!! i love taht :) and love the cheese shape “P” both of your dogs are the best and so adorable. I also love that they love eachother!!

My dog passed away in 2008 and it was the saddest day i can remember in a while. My whole family was so torn up about it, my parents still wont get another dog just yet because of my first pup, Jersey :(

Happy birthday to your baby girl!!!

  72. August 19, 2010 12:52 pm

I’m so glad I’m not the only one who bakes for my dogs! I actually have that exact cookbook/biscuit set at home:)
There are 6 dogs in the Yoder clan–Chester (Golden/Lab mix), Ted (Jack Russell Terrier), Gus, Dixie (both pugs), Greta, and Rainer (both Boxers). Whew.

    Happy Birthday Penelope!!!

I have an 11 month old Boston Terrier named Winston. Something fun Zane (my hubby) and I do everday when we get home is play hide and seek with Winston. One of us lets him out of the bathroom and he immediately goes in search of the other who is hiding. It’s adorable and we all love it!

Unfortunately my Dad isn’t a big dog person (crazy, i know), so we have only had one dog in our house, her name was Leela, and she was a mix, even the humane society we adopted her from didn’t know her exact breed, but they believed she was part golden retriever. Why do bloggers have the CUTEST dog pictures ever?!

  77. August 19, 2010 4:05 pm

I knew it was a holiday yesterday, somewhere and for someone, I don’t just wake up feeling so bright-eyed and bushy-tailed for no reason. Does I’m curious, does she have a brother/sister I can adopt?! *heart melts* I can’t stop swooning, and you’ve even said yourself they make the perfect I’m-not-ready-for-kids-quite-yet replacement. I’m even considering asking for the whereabouts for the adoption papers for YOU as a friend/roomie/chef after this post, those cakes look like something I’d devour in a second and I’m not even a pup! Yay for birthdays, the cutest dogs in the world and peanut butter cake. All equally, of course.

My husband wanted bigger dogs and I wanted smaller, so we go smaller and gave them big dog names :) But now he wouldn’t have it any other way because they are like little people and even sleep with us every night!

    :)

I was not a dog person…until I got one! Now I can’t imagine life without my Nina. My favorite thing is how happy she is to see me when I get home, and how if I’m in a bad mood, she somehow knows to be extra cute and lovey to make me feel better :-)

Happy Bday Beautiful Doggy!! So cute!!! How CUTE was she when she was a puppy??!!! They are still both just as beautiful of course! I have 2 Jack Russells named “Jack” and “Max”. Jack is 4 and Max is 7. The thing I love most about them (and all dogs) is the unconditional love….Dogs never care what you look like, how you act or feel….they just love you 100% of the time. Dogs are the most beautiful creatures in the world and I cannot imagine life without them.

    Happy Birthday, Penny!

I make cakes for my dog too! I started out with a recipe from a book, then over the years it progressed into a cake we could all share, mine is banana w/o nuts… my little guy is allergic to nuts.

Great pictures! I’m, of course, partial to the pics of Randy, since I’m a basset lover. ;)

You don’t need to enter me in the contest, but I’ll give the goods on my dog. :)

I have a basset hound, he’s 14 years old… I call him Little-bit on my blog, but his ‘real’ name is… Maxwell House, because when he was a pup he’d wake me up at 4am… for two years! So I named him after coffee… but in most company, he’s just Max. ;)

  89. August 19, 2010 10:43 pm

I am not allowed to have a dog because my mom is allergic, but my best friends dogs are my favorite things in the world. Her dogs are a Chocolate Lab and a White Lab. They are named Whitney and Chelsea. I love them both and I love the days that we take them for walks. I would love to win the cook book so that I can make them special doggie treats!! :)

I am obsessed with my dogs, too- Jules (3 year old husky/shar pei mix) & Jax (1 year old bulldog/staffordshire terrier mix).

I have a shih tzu/yorkie mix (shorkie if you will, but I don’t like those corny mixed names) named Brutus. He will be 3 in September but I don’t know the exact date :( I love that he is a total mama’s boy :)
