flashback friday: last year.

July 2, 2010

hello! i feel like i haven’t talked to you guys blogged in forever.  but here i am! *waves*

hope you enjoyed sarah’s guest post.. and i hope you enjoy guest posts in general because i can assure you that is all you are going to see here in about two weeks.

two weeks.

i am getting married in two weeks.

balls.

needless to say, i’ve been keeping busy with wedding details and house stuff.  for those of you who don’t know, marshall & i bought a house in april and had the ridiculous idea to renovate 80% of it.  there is still a lot left to do and we have to be moved in before the wedding.

which, in case you missed the memo above, is in two weeks.

here is what is on the house to-do list:

  • kitchen countertops (my brother is doing concrete countertops.. should be badass.)
  • install kitchen sink/faucet
  • buy kitchen table/chairs/bar stools
  • buy living room furniture/rugs
  • get all blinds cleaned and reinstall them into the window openings
  • seal & trim sliding glass door
  • install 2 dog doors
  • take off all doors (there are 7), cut them down (to accommodate for the new tile floors), possibly paint them and put them back up
  • all window sills
  • patch damaged sheetrock in 3 window openings (thanks, marshall’s friends who were trying to help)
  • paint one bathroom
  • paint one bedroom
  • touch up paint in a zillion places
  • bathroom countertops (both bathrooms)
  • bathroom sinks/faucets/shower heads/tub faucet/etc
  • bathroom light fixtures, mirrors, knobs, towel racks, hooks, TP roll holder, etc (both bathrooms)
  • heater/cooling vent register covers (all of them)
  • closet/door knobs (all of them)
  • stain deck
  • buy a dresser for marshall
  • buy a desk & love seat & TV for the office

and the wedding to-do list:

  • find a guest book pen
  • finalize the rehearsal dinner menu
  • buy 12 disposable cameras
  • finish photo clothes line
  • make various signs needed for reception
  • flower girl dresses

gee.. which one is longer?

as you can see, my stress lies in the house issues. i am pretty happy with all the wedding plans, not stressed about that at all in fact!

anyway.. i haven’t been taking photos of anything really. i will show you what i’ve got, but i cannot promise that it will intrigue you.

it has been super hot, so i have been eating my faux protein frosty a lot this week.

IMG_7058

i thought i would re-visit the recipe since i haven’t talked about it in months! i know miss PBJenny is all ‘bout this thing :)

IMG_7062

  • 1/2-3/4 cup almond milk (or milk of your choice, i use unsweetened vanilla almond breeze by blue diamond)
  • ridiculous amount of ice
  • 1 scoop (30 grams) vanilla protein powder (i use EAS brand 100% whey)
  • 1-2 TB unsweetened cocoa powder (depending on how chocolatey you like it)
  • 1/2 tsp xanthan gum (this is the KEY ingredient)
  • sweetener of choice (in this one i used 1/4 of a frozen banana for my sweetener, but i always switch it up)

blend, blend, blend.

devour.

IMG_7060

i kid you not, this tastes identical to a wendy’s frosty. but it’s healthy. and i love it. a lot.

i have also been munching on insane amounts of veggies & hummus lately!

IMG_7070

this particular plate had mini bell peppers, cucumber and mushrooms.

IMG_7067IMG_7068

i actually mixed this hummus (garlic flavored sabra) with a squirt of beaver hot & sweet mustard.. ever since HEAB introduced me to that stuff, i can’t get enough of it! (by the way, HEABs just found out she is having a girl! congrats!)

thursday’s upper body workout:

i took part of this workout from the pages of the latest issue of oxygen magazine.  they talked about giant sets, which are basically just supersets beefed up! when you do two exercises back-to-back without rest, that is called a “superset”.  when you do three exercises in the same manner, it is called a “triset”.  a “giant set” is when you combine four or more exercises back-to-back without rest.  i commonly refer to this as a “circuit”, but i like the way “giant set” sounds. it is fun. what can i say, i am easy to please!

the upper body moves in the article hit all major upper body areas (chest, back, shoulders, biceps & triceps) and did so in the best way possible: biggest muscles first, then smaller muscles. i like working out this way because the bigger muscles are able to sustain the whole workout.

anyway, here is the workout i did:

  • 5 minute elliptical warmup

giant set: three times through (with a 60 second rest after each time)

move weight reps muscle worked
flat bench dumbbell chest press 20# ea 15 chest
two arm dumbbell row 15# ea 15 back
seated overhead dumbbell press 15# ea 15 shoulders
alternating biceps curl 10# ea 15 (each side) biceps
skull crushers 10# ea 15 triceps

finished the workout off with some core:

  • 25 bench tuck crunches
  • 50 decline bench crunches
  • 100 oblique twists on decline bench
  • 25 back extension reps on stability ball

and then i stretched!

the end.

it was awesome to get both a cardio workout and a lifting workout in.  while i don’t feel guilty about taking days off from working out in order to get ready for my wedding & the move, i definitely miss working out. i genuinely enjoy exercise.

speaking of exercise.. i just wanted to mention something. i know i am one of those “screw the scale” types, but yesterday i picked up my scale to pack it for the move.. and the curiosity got the best of me. i am sure you know what that is like. i decided to step on.

i lost 4 pounds.

what? weird. i have been to the gym twice in ten days and i lost weight? now, that 4 pound loss wasn’t in just the ten days because i hadn’t weighed myself in weeks.. but i was under the impression that i would have gained weight due to my workout neglect and my recent dessert indulgence.

that just reconfirms what i already believed: weight loss is all about what you eat! sure, it has a little to do with working out, but i believe that weight loss is 80% what you eat and 20% exercise.

i have been watching what i eat, making sure my portions are proper, getting a good amount of protein in at each meal, eating when i am hungry and stopping when i am full.. and it’s working.

i couldn’t be happier! i wanted to share this with you guys because i know a lot of women kill themselves for hours on end in the gym and don’t lose a pound because their nutrition is not where it should be. and you know what they say: you can’t out-train a bad diet.

it’s SO true. you can’t. and who would want to? like i mentioned up there, i exercise because i enjoy it. not because it will let me eat whatever i want (it won’t) and not because i want to lose weight (it may help, but minimally.. i burn maybe 300 calories in each workout).  when i want to fit into my summer wardrobe, i don’t focus on the gym. i focus on the kitchen. and i make sure i am spot on with what i am eating. which, by the way, still includes eating whatever i like. just in moderation. i have enjoyed pie and ice cream on father’s day and plenty of white, doughy bread when it is staring me in the face. i just make sure the rest of my meals are balanced and clean.

okay.. end of rambles. just wanted to give you guys my two cents, for what it’s worth!

*******************************************************************

flashback friday!

it’s the fourth of july weekend, so i decided i would flash back to last year’s weekend.  several of you read my blog back then, so this may be a tad repetitive for you and i apologize, but i think it is always fun to do the “a year ago today…” posts. so bare with me.

a year ago this weekend…

  • i was eating breakfast cookies:

image

1/3 cup oats, 1 scoop vanilla protein powder, 1/2 banana , 1 Tb cocoa powder, 1 Tb PB&Co Dark Chocolate Dreams, unsweetened coconut, splash of almond milk

goodness. i need to bring these back into my life.

  • i was getting comments from these lovely blog friends, i am so glad we are still buds a year later!

susan, danica, lynn, ellie, emily, k, jenny, holly, kailey, anne, haleigh, angharad (first comment she ever left was that weekend!), sophia, jess, ashley, april, jasmine, caroline, maya, julie, leah, other caroline, other emily & michelle.

image

ironically.. i love raisins now.

  • i ran my first 10k (with my sister suni & bro in law eric)

image

image

image

well, my first and only 10k, actually. i want to do another one sometime soon!

  • i went to the demolition derby & watched cars get smashed and fireworks go off

image

image

image

we are going again this year! it is tomorrow night :)

  • my friends steph & alex had a BBQ and i made miniature patriotic cheesecakes

7-4-09 054

7-4-09 053

cute, right? recipe is here. they are having another BBQ this year, on sunday, and i plan to make patriotic desserts again! can’t wait!

  • mister randy dog turned 4 years old and i made him a birthday cake

image

image

randy turns FIVE on monday. you can bet there WILL be cake!!

  • marshall got me a food processor for our second (boyfriend/girlfriend) anniversary

image

he knows the way to my heart. through kitchen gadgets. this year will be our 3 year anniversary, but since we are getting married in two weeks.. i am not sure we will have to celebrate the whole boyfriend/girlfriend thing anymore!

  • my brother & sister in law lost my unborn nephew (who we called “peanut”) at 8 months pregnant :(

image

sad. this is hard. it will be a year on saturday… we are going to go on a hike in the mountains and let some balloons go in his honor. i know he is up in heaven and there is a reason he was taken from our family before even coming into this world, but it is still very hard.  i am happy to report that my brother & his wife are expecting another baby boy (due in november!) so that is exciting. but we all think about peanut often and wish we’d had a chance to get to know him. <3

that concludes flashback friday! what a difference a year makes. i am engaged, randy is a year older (but no more mature, he still gets into the trash), and i like raisins! then again, there are the things that stay the same. i still love races, we are going to the demo derby & having a BBQ just like last year and i plan my food according to what holiday it is.

*************************************************************************************

well, you know my weekend plans, since i just told you during my flashback! but i’d love to hear yours.

Qs~

1. what are your 4th of july plans? what delicious food you are going to make? any traditions you have for the 4th that you’d like to share with the class? in addition to the hike, the demo derby, the BBQ and randy’s birthday, we are going to the REAL (soccer) game tonight and working on the house… as per usual.

2. favorite veggie to eat RAW? this. is. hard. ohmygoodness. i guess i will have to say bell peppers because they pack so much flavor. but i also love raw mushrooms. and carrots! oh, hell, i like them all.

have a happy & safe holiday! i will try to check in sometime this weekend!

xo. janetha b.

p.s. happy birthday, k!

  2. July 2, 2010 5:32 pm

Ahh, I can’t believe that your wedding is so close!!!! Don’t worry, you have a long time to work on the house list, the wedding list is the one with the deadline!

You know what’s funny, I’ve been working out more than I have in my life (doing 2 workouts a day, running 30 miles a week) and I have gained weight!!! I keep thinking if I would cut back from working out I would probably loose but I know that I must be fueling right and doing everything right because my weight gain has to be the good kind. My pants still fit I just feel stronger! Heck yes! :)

Okay darling, have an incredible weekend!!! <3 you always.

  3. July 2, 2010 5:43 pm

That is so sad about your brother and sis in law. :( I’m sure this will be tough for them. Have a wonderful 4th, girl!

  4. July 2, 2010 5:55 pm

I eat those peppers and cucks EVERY day. LOVE Costco. Also just got the individual packages of Sabra on sale. $5.50 for 16!

  5. July 2, 2010 6:02 pm

It is so true about your diet! And I remember all of that from last year! I’m glad we are still blogging buddies :D

  6. July 2, 2010 6:05 pm

Thanks to this faux Frosty recipe, you are now a goddess in my eyes. I need to get some xantham gum, pronto!
    1. 4th plans–going to the lake with ALL SIX dogs in tow. Should be fun:)
    2. Carrots and shrooms are my favorite raw veggies (NOT brocc surprisingly)

  7. July 2, 2010 6:07 pm

Your recipe for a frosty sounds delicious. i’m bookmarking it for summer.

happy 4th, have an excellent weekend.

You sure do have a lot to do before the wedding with the house, i’m sure you can get it done

  8. July 2, 2010 6:30 pm

    long entry today! love it!

My favorite veggie to eat raw is DEFINITELY fresh peas from the farm stand, straight out of the pod!!

Second would be cucumber and tomatoes (tie!), again, fresh from the farm!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH TWO WEEKS!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wish you could live-blog your wedding, but that would just be sick. Actually, I hope you take WEEKS off blogging just to enjoy it all. Which reminds me, I need to respond to your email.

Ugh, I am so, so sorry about the upcoming anniversary of the loss of Peanut. But knowing that they’re pregnant again is such an incredible sign of life. Amazing.

Hmmm, this 4th I will be with my man! I’m so excited to see him!

I prefer veggies raw anyway, so I guess cucumbers. I don’t think those should ever be cooked, though. And I don’t eat carrots if they’re cooked. Le ick!

    MISS YOU LOVE YOU!!!! xoxoxoxo

  10. July 2, 2010 6:42 pm

OH man that list! My BFF moved and renovated a house while planning a wedding too. Don’t know how you guys do it. But ya will and it will be here and you’ll be looking back at memories soon, and everything will be amazing!
Love the flashback. My blogiversary is coming up on Sunday, so I plan on doing my first flashback then! finally get to say a year ago! haha

My plans? Tomorrow I have an 8 miler and a client to train…maybe a bike ride?
Sunday we’re going to a friend’s cook out :) And I’m training every day this weekend too…

  11. July 2, 2010 7:01 pm

I’ll be looking up for a balloon tomorrow and saying a little prayer for peanut. :)

Family fun runs are the best. When is marshall going to join in his first 5k?

    And vegetables…….cucumber!! Love it raw.

  12. July 2, 2010 7:06 pm

Wow friend. You have quite a bit on your plate! I can’t believe you’re still even blogging right now! Love the looks of your frosty. I just had one- fantastic on a summer night :) Happy Birthday Randy!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hope you guys enjoy all of your fabulous plans. We have a family bbq and lots of time with friends planned. Just a note on the weight loss- and I know you know all this…but water weight, potential small changes in muscle mass, etc all impact that number. But I do agree- diet is a HUGE part of weight! Favorite veggie to eat raw- carrots, hands down! I got my tofu press and I can’t wait to use it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. July 2, 2010 7:56 pm

Love the flashback! I hate raisins. Haha. I am so sorry for the loss of peanut! That’s so incredibly sad :(

    It’s almost Randy’s birthday!?!? Hoooraaay!!! That’s awesome!

I hope you have a beautiful weekend and I also hope you aren’t too stressed!

  14. July 2, 2010 9:12 pm

Eeep, that to-do list makes ME nervous! But, I’ve always said it’s amazing what people can accomplish under pressure and it sounds like you have a ton of people on your side helping out so I’m sure it will all be done in plenty of time. The whole disposable camera thing btw, might be unnecessary. We did it and I still have them (I bought 30!) and I haven’t even had them developed over a year later. Our photog took over 2000 photos and I don’t know what I would do with any more! But you seem to take a lot more photos than I do so maybe I should keep my 2 cents to myself….

Anywho, I’ve got a wedding on the forth and am excited for that. And my fav raw veg is definitely sugar snap peas. So sweet and crunchy.

  15. July 2, 2010 9:42 pm

Meh…I’m not doing much this weekend. But I have Monday off and that’s all I care about! And I totally agree…I am PROOF positive that you can’t exercise away a bad diet. I think I’m finally getting the message, and starting to clean up what I eat because yeah…I work out a lot and the pants are still tight. Whoops.

  16. July 2, 2010 10:19 pm

Missed your posts Janetha – so glad to hear from ya! Sounds like things are super busy but awesome workouts you got in there and great job with eating clean before the wedding – such an awesome motivation! Loved the flash back photos, too, July 4th looks like so much fun – I missed celebrating Canada Day here as I was on call and stuck in the hospital, sigh!

I don’t know if I should be more shocked at the list of house things or the phrase, “I love raisins.” This cannot be the same person. How did this happen?! Also, I wish I could be there for Peanut’s day tomorrow… send a balloon for us!

  18. July 2, 2010 10:56 pm

I totally agree that weight loss is all about diet!! I work out the same way as I did before except that I eat less clean now and it shows.

Sorry to hear about peanut. He’s up there happily playing with Mable :)

And omg…I dont know how you are doing that list of house stuff. I FREAKED OUT about going to Home Depot today. I hate that place!!

  19. July 2, 2010 11:24 pm

I agree – no matter how much I exercise, the weight only comes off with a change in my diet. Congrats to you – that’s super exciting right before your wedding!! That’s 1 HUGE to-do list. Best of luck.

  20. July 3, 2010 12:11 am

“weight loss is 80% what you eat and 20% exercise.” and you can’t out train a bad diet…AMEN!

And also, stress and being busy, both mentally and physically, as YOU ARE…that burns a ridic amt of cals. In advance of my move, I had to fight to keep weight on. The stress of big life stuff burns tons, dont doubt that.

The mini cheesecakes and race pics…awesome

Peanut. RIP. Thank god they are pregnant again. Wow. HUGS to them!

  21. July 3, 2010 12:28 am

Wow, you have a busy, EXCITING two weeks ahead! All your hard work is going to make the big day (and honeymoon!) so much sweeter. :-D

Loved the flashback! That breakfast cookie sounds awesome and the patriotic cheesecakes are super cute.

I’m so sorry about the loss of Peanut. But what a blessing that your brother and sister-in-law are pregnant again!

4th of July plans = big BBQ with the fam (my bro and his gf flew into town tonight) followed by a fireworks show downtown. Can’t wait!

  22. July 3, 2010 12:38 am

Hi Janetha, great to see your flashback, sorrows and joys, changes and things that stay the same :-). Again, I wish you the best of luck with all the preparations :-).
Oh, and a happy birthday to Randy: love the cake pic!

  23. July 3, 2010 1:18 am

The diet bit is so true! It wasn’t until about the 70s that dietitians even started recommending diet AND exercise as a way to lose weight. Before that it was just diet. Although exercise has really fabulous benefits, unless you’re working out 8 hours a day, it doesn’t have a huge effect on a weight loss effort.

  24. July 3, 2010 3:54 am

i remember all of this. love it.

happy 4th of july weekend my lil’ janetha bean! (i can only call you that for so much longer :)

  25. July 3, 2010 3:54 am

p.s. congrats to your brother and sister-in-law!!!!!

  26. July 3, 2010 4:44 am

AWWW well obvi i have to keep it goin’ and comment a year later!!! :D I’m so so excited for you, you and Marshall are so perfect together and your wedding will be absolutely AWESOME! What a great idea for a summery July wedding! I’m scurreeddd bc all my friends are out of town and stuff, and I don’t know too many people here, so hopefully i find some party to crash, haha…
PS SO happy for your bro and sister in law :)

  27. July 3, 2010 4:57 am

My sister lost a pregnancy last summer as well, very tough since she had to deliver him. My Dad was killed in a car accident 11 weeks ago, so we know they are both in heaven now watching over the rest of us.

Hope you have a great weekend!!

  28. July 3, 2010 6:27 am

I run in the Peachtree Road Race every 4th of July – it’s a famous 10K in Atlanta. Actually I think it’s the largest (meaning amount of people) 10K in the country!! It is such a fun tradition, though this year I’ll be taking it easier and walking it.

I love Randy’s cake! So cute!! :) I made Ripsey a cake for her birthday back in April and also made little dog cookies in the shapes of R’s! :)

  29. July 3, 2010 6:29 am

Wow so much to do but I’m sure you’ll get on top of it, I really can’t choose my favorite raw veggie there is just to many! Have a fun weekend x x

  30. July 3, 2010 7:21 am

is it super weird that i REMEMBER your post from last year…

    specifically your 10k race…

    …am i a creep now…

whatevs maybe i am :) i can’t believe ive “known” you for that long haha

    GAH 2 WEEEKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  31. July 3, 2010 8:04 am

Wow, have fun! This weekend we’re going to watch the fireworks over the lake and then we’re having a barbecue on Sunday! I’m making a black bean and corn succotash, which I’m excited for, because succotash is a cool word. Heheheh. My favorite raw veggie… hmmm, that’s so hard! A tie between spinach and carrots I think (just because I like them better raw than cooked.) I can’t stand raw mushrooms, though! They make me gag.

  32. July 3, 2010 8:30 am

So sorry about your brother and sister-in-laws lost. That must have been (and still be) very hard.

Couldn’t agree with you more about the food and exercise. It’s mostly food for sure. I’ve been telling that to the girls I train but it’s really hard for them to believe or put into practice.

  33. July 3, 2010 8:50 am

You have come so far in one year! I’m going to have to try your faux frosty, I don’t have any guar gum, so according to HEAB I can’t really make protein ice cream, but I do have xanthan gum! My fourth of July plans are actually happening on the 3rd. My mom’s bff’s family is having a party at their farm, and I love it. We dine al fresco and she always has the most interesting guests. Any summer party at her casa is happening. I think I’m going to make peanut butter and jelly ice cream sandwiches on graham crackers, so I better hop on that! On the actual 4th I’ll be working as a waitress, but hopefully no one will come in and I can bounce out of there a little early. I can’t stand broccoli and cauliflower raw, unless there is a really good dip involved. My favorite raw veggie is sugar snap peas. I love that SNAP! Have a great 4th, Janetha!

  35. July 3, 2010 9:36 am

Oh, I can’t believe your sister had to endure that. I could not even begin to imagine. Congrats to her 2nd though. I hope things continue to go well with that pregnancy. :)

Have a great 4th!! And awesome on the scale drop. Mainly for the fact that it just shows what you were talking about. The diet is what matters. Great job!

  36. July 3, 2010 10:07 am

i’m glad we’re still blog buds too, janetha! :)

  38. July 3, 2010 11:42 am

that faux-sty looks gooood. I am seriously milkshake-obsessed lately.

    1. don’t know yet! probly the traditional cookout type thing, maybe a beach picnic party. I just made some killer garlic zucchini dip, which would make a nice addition to a cookout or picnic.

    2. maybe broccoli? I know, weird. I prefer all my veggies raw, for the most part. I like the crunch.

  39. July 3, 2010 2:55 pm

I love how you did a flashback! So awesome, I may have to steal that idea for my blog next week. Also I’m like you, I think red peppers are my favorite raw veggie, with hummus. MMMM

    1. I’m not sure! I’m still trying to figure out when I really feel like baking.

    2. Carrots. I love those little orange bad boys. Broccoli comes in a close second though.

Love this post. And frosty, smoothie in a bowl, protein ice cream, fake shake, call it what you may- it is also one of my favorite things ever. i make it a lot in my dorm room (basically the exact same recipe, almond milk, gums, everything) with my magic bullet, but i cannot wait to go home and use the vita mix to make it triple the size! aahh. best stuff ever.

love the flashback! i cant remember when exactly i started reading your blog, but healthy living blogs in general, i think aug/sept will mark my one year reading anniversary. craziness! 2 weeeekkks! so freaking happy for you.

I love your dining room set! Where did you get it?

The best thing I ate this weekend…hmmm….either kalbi flank steak or Kobe beef sliders from one of my favorite restaurants (aka EPIC sliders).

    I don’t use the term cookout….maybe it’s a regional thing?

Vinnata design of faucets, traditional elegance. Like other modern models, has a face and ceramic spray valve function Masterclad. It is designed so that the user has adequate control of water. In addition, this tool has a high arc spout to reach the top pans. With a fast connection and the hose is flexible, you should have no problem with the installation.
In all faucets, modern kitchen is an excellent addition to any kitchen. They are very affordable, so you should be able to find the right accessory for your sink. You get the durability, reliability and convenience.
