miss this pup!

June 30, 2010

today is the day that mable would have been nine. NINE. i am getting old! i got her when i was 18.

moab 022-

bless her little ball-loving heart. she was the best dog ever to live.

mable5035

mable was hit by a car on september 1, 2007. i had part-time custody of her because i bought her (half and half) with my ex.  it was quite the custody battle over mable after we broke up.  the ex actually stole mable from my house when i started dating marshall because he said “if you have a boyfriend, you don’t need a dog.” um, ok, whatever. so i hadn’t seen her since he took her in june of 2007 and i got a phone call informing me of the accident. and that was that. mable was gone.

it hurts my heart to talk about it.

car083106_18021

you may have noticed my tattoo in photos:

IMG_7056

i got this a few days after she was killed.  i don’t like tattoos but i had a strong urge to get this. and i love it. and i look at it daily and think of her.

mable

the name mable means “lovable”.. i think it fit her to a T.

happy birthday, mabes. hope there is a doggy heaven and you are having a good time there :)

SO. where did i leave off?

oh yeah.. i had a giveaway that auto-posted while i was doing pushups during my bridal photos..

image

what? that’s normal.. i promise. pump out about 30 pushups and it will make your muscles look good in photos.

true story.

giveaway winner!

image

congrats nicole!

image

send me your info (my email is on the side bar) and i will ship you your prize.

thanks for entering, everyone. you can bet your sweet buns there will be another one soon.

OH! and thanks to everyone who voted for my photo. clarification.. there are more photos in the running. if you look along the top of the blog, it has the photos in the contest in the order of most votes.. i am currently in third place. so, if you haven’t voted, click here to do so!

noteworthy dinner:

last night i celebrated tofu tuesday (as did mama pea!) with my beloved tofuXpress tofu press and a new-to-me trader joe’s curry sauce.

IMG_6965

i let this brick of tofu drain for 30 hours. it was bone dry by the time i was ready to use it!

IMG_6966

sliced and diced.

IMG_6971

cooked the cubes on either side, adding a bit of curry powder to the tofu.

IMG_6977

added the sauce:

IMG_6981

added a generous amount of steamed veggies:

IMG_6986

cooked some brown rice:

IMG_6997

called it dinner!

IMG_7006

at 10:30 PM.

 IMG_7010

it had been a long day.

IMG_6994

but goodness, gracious.. i think i have a new favorite trader joe’s product! run to your nearest location (in my case that would be las vegas, don’t think i can run there) and buy some red curry sauce NOW. SO, SO, SOOO good.

i bought an iced coffee mug!

IMG_7028

i don’t think it is big enough. it only fits 24 ounces.. and my french press makes a bit more iced coffee than that.

but it does have a built in straw. bonus!

IMG_7030

tada!

IMG_7029

breakfast:

today i had a deeelicious breakfast. but it looked like mush.

IMG_7018

1 container plain chobani greek yogurt, 2 TB PB2 (powdered peanut butter) and about a cup of muesli.

IMG_7022

sometimes the ugliest meals taste the best.

leftovers for lunch:

IMG_7035

with a side of cucumbers, mushrooms & sabra hummus.

IMG_7050

dare i say this curry was even better the second time around?

IMG_7043

oh yes. it was.

IMG_7052

working out? what’s that?

i haven’t worked out much lately. actually, in the past 7 days i have gone for one run and done only crunches and pushups whenever i get the chance. i will just randomly bust out a set. nothing more. i don’t care. i have my whole life to work out. i only have one wedding. priorities, people.

however, i don’t have too much to do today.. so i think i will go to the gym :)

i will let you know how that goes.. hopefully i have time to post tomorrow. i’ve got an appointment with the caterer to finalize the food. the most important part of the wedding, folks. well.. aside from the groom, i suppose ;)

Qs~

1. do you like curry? what is your favorite kind/type/color?  i love ALL curries. but marshall hates thai curries so i don’t get to eat them often. i like green, red, yellow thai curries.. not picky at all. but my favorite curry is probably indian curry. it has such a unique flavor that i love.

2. what leftovers do you think taste better than the initial dish? what leftovers taste worse? better: pasta, asian cuisine, anything with sauce because it has more time to “soak in”. worse: salads, sandwiches, fries/baked potatoes. not even worth it.

p.s. only 16 more days of being janetha “b”! EEEEEP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So true about the pushups! I seriously did some before I walked down the aisle. It is a tried and true trick.

And your doggy was so cute. Sorry about her. :(

  2. June 30, 2010 3:49 pm

So sad about your dog. I think your tattoo is more than appropriate.

Looking good in the dress! Can’t wait to see more!!!!

What a fabulous tribute your pup!!!

I think pizza always tastes better the next day…ALWAYS!

Mable was a beautiful dog and I’m so sorry about what happened. My ex bf’s dog was hit by a car (that didn’t even stop!) a few years ago and it was quite tough for his family to take.

With regard to your questions – I have never had curry (as far as I know) and didn’t even know there were different types =) I’m not a big spicy food person and I heard that curry is spicy. My stepdad loves it though! And best food the next day? I agree about chinese food and when I used to eat meat I would get Chicken Francaise from a local diner and I LOVED eating the rice the next day when all the sauce from the chicken had soaked in. Delish! Almost makes me want to eat meat again (JK!)

oh I’m going to cry. Mable looks too cute! Great story and what a great dog. She will be missed.
You look gorgeous in the gown….well what I can see anyway. hehe.
16 days??? HOLY MOLY!!! That has gone by fast.

    :)

  6. June 30, 2010 4:09 pm

Growing up I always thought soup and stews tasted 10x better the next day.

Your morning breakfast bowl looks all mushy…like theres milk…is the yogurt just runny like that?

  7. June 30, 2010 4:14 pm

:( There IS a doggie heaven. I bet she’s chatting with my old dog Spanky :)

    I love chili leftovers mmm….

    That’s all for now xoxoxo!

Awww Mable! Happy Birthday to her sweet soul. May she RIP!

Haha, I ADORE that pic of you doing pushups in your gown. It’s so you! I wouldn’t be surprised if you started busting out lunges as you walk down the aisle! :)

That tofu, mmmm! I need to look for that sauce. Anything curry and I’m all over it!

Glad you are enjoying life and not stressing over the missed gym time. You have your whole life to work out but you only get married once! :)

    Love ya girl!

  12. June 30, 2010 4:26 pm

yooo your ex was crazy for taking mable. that’s ridic!! sorry hope you dont mind me calling him crazy but that is so childish. i love your tattoo. mable is doing well in doggy heaven im sure :)

i dont think i’ve actually had curry. i’ve had indian food before but not curry. i think i would love it though, i loooove flavors!

things always taste better the day after, like soup. OMG!

  13. June 30, 2010 4:38 pm

OMG you look so beautiful in that push up pic! serioously love that!

beautiful pics of your pup mable RIP :(

you said it so right…you have your WHOLE LIFE to workout but only get married once so priorities!! with that said…enjoy your workout!!!

I am not a HUGE curry fan…I do love CUMIN though!

chili always tastes better and soups, pasta dishes (where flavors can come together) but i HATE soggy sandwiches or wraps!!

  14. June 30, 2010 4:47 pm

Seeing Mable reminds me of my childhood dog Casey who was also a yellow lab. I never really got to say goodbye to my girl, so reading that got me a little teary eyed missing her
:*( That dog was seriously my best buddy growing up. I used to sleep with his UNDER my covers in my twin bed. I miss her so much!! Wish I could just give her one more big hug. So, I say… Happy Birthday Mable! :)

  15. June 30, 2010 4:53 pm

awww girl! hugs to you for mabes sake :)

    you’re ALMOST MARRIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED!!!!!!!!!!

and dude i’ve been eyeing that sauce since forrrrrevskies! i miight have to pick up a bottle next time ;)

  16. June 30, 2010 5:05 pm

J Bean…can I still call you that after you’re married?!? You’ll always be my J. Bean, right??? :)

CD and I rescued a pup a friend found trying to cross the interstate. Scout…we called him Baby Scout, and he was the sweetest pup ever. 8 weeks after we got him, I had taken him off his leash while walking him and he stepped out in front of a car. It was the saddest day of my life. It happened January of 2008, and to this day, I still thing about him everyday. So, I am so so sorry about Mable – and I love that you got her name tattooed on your wrist. :)

Love curry…all kinds, but nothing too spicy. Indian is probably my favorite as well. :)

Good leftovers: Chicken salad – any kind of salad like that as they flavors seem to get better after a day or two in the fridge. Lasagna too.

The bad: Onion rings and salads.

  17. June 30, 2010 5:25 pm

I actually don’t like leftovers. I know that makes me a freak. The worst part is, neither does my husband. So we have to be careful about portion control…and cleaning out the fridge. But, there are 3 things I love left over: 1) rice and beans, 2) pizza, and 3) thai and chinese food.

  18. June 30, 2010 5:29 pm

Also, your story on Mable is very touching. That is how i felt about our Great Dane, Maximilian (Maxi) and our collie, Bello. Pets are such lovable companions and it is hard to let go, but there are always more to love and make new memories with:)

PS- that tofu curry dinner looks SO good, but i have NO idea what to do when it comes to tofu!!! I bought some and tried to make a meal and it didn’t look ANYTHING like the pics I see on food blogs. I guess I need to research how to prepare and make. Ah well!

  23. June 30, 2010 6:57 pm

I’ve actually never tried curry but your tofu reciepe looks so good I might just have to try it now!

LOVE curry. Curry and cumin are my go-to spices for tofu. And that being said…I love leftover tofu combined with anything! More time for the flavors to soak in. I also love pasta with cream sauce when it’s leftover and cold. Interesting texture!

  26. June 30, 2010 7:04 pm

Aww. Losing a pet is always hard. Mable looks a bit like my first dog when I was a little girl – he was a Dingo that we rescued after a family on our block moved away and abandoned him.

I’m so looking into a tofu press! Although I quite love my ghetto phone-book-and-lotsa-paper-towels impromptu press.

I LOVE curry! My favorite is red because it generally has a licorice kick to it, but I’m an equal opportunity curry consumer! Haha. And I adore leftover pizza; I think the crust gets chewier and the sauce gets more flavorful!

That is one of my all time favorite TJs products! I lovvvvvve thai curries but really don’t dig the indian…in fact I just tried the indian curry simmer sauce from TJs and ended up having to toss the leftovers, and I never do that!

  28. June 30, 2010 7:15 pm

Janetha: You are BEAUTIFUL!!! Your picture of you in the dress is gorgeous! I cannot wait to see the whole thing. I LOVE how your hair was done- it looks perfect.
So sorry to hear about Mable- but know that she is in a HAPPY place…and playing with all of the other dogs…and running after balls & getting lots of doggie treats :D

  29. June 30, 2010 7:17 pm

So sorry about Mable, what a sweetie she was. Love the tattoo too, I think that one is definitely worth it.

And your wedding dress pushups are golden. I always try to remember to do pushups before I go for a night out or something along the same lines, I want my super hardcore muscles looking their fabbest ;) But wedding thangs are way more important than workouts fo sho so keep on NOT feeling guilty about missing those dang workouts.

As for curries, I’ve only ever tried em a few times. I like them! But I’m not nearly curry versed enough to know what kinds I actually like haha. And I’m a leftover lover so I kind of like them all no matter what for the most part. Yep, even salads and sandwiches, I like the sog (ew? haha). But you’re kinda right about potato leftovers, noooo good.

  30. June 30, 2010 7:26 pm

love the pushups…trust me at my fitness show, people were “pumping up” non stop. and for photo shoots, same!

the tofu press.. i have one on the way…cannot wait!!!!

    RIP Mable :)

    • June 30, 2010 7:58 pm

andrea, i am not sure why bridal photos exist but it is a photo session where you get all dressed up in your gown and get a zillion photos taken and you have some printed to display at the wedding!

  32. June 30, 2010 7:44 pm

LOVE this post. One of the many reasons I love you and your blog is our shared devotion to our dogs:)
I still think of my beloved Charlotte (named after Charlotte’s Web) every Groundhog’s Day, her birthday. She died when I was 14, but I’ll never forget her–she was my first friend, and a wonderfully loving creature.

    Ohhhh….cute Mabel.

I don’t like curry because spicy food makes my stomach explode. The best food as leftovers is pasta…especially alfredo and I agree with you that salads are the worst.

  45. July 1, 2010 4:18 am

I would only get a tattoo if it truly had a special meaning to me, and I totally think that qualifies (My dear doggy that passed away a couple years ago was named Cromwell, which I don’t think would make for a very attractive tattoo…) Anyway, love to you and Mable. If there are no dogs in heaven, I don’t want to go.

Like I said already, that picture is one of my favorite bridal pics ever. However, I have never heard of bridal session photos, but then again, I have never been a bride. You look bee-yooo-tiff-ulll, and part of it is just your spirit shining through.

Enjoy this process, as it’s once-in-a-lifetime, my friend!

You’re totally right with the pushups – so go to town. ;)
Curry can be a little too spicy for me at times, so it’s not usually me “spice of choice”. And I’d say one of my favorite leftovers with time would be soup – always tastes better the longer it sits and the flavors can get friendly :)

Thanks for reviewing that TJ’s curry sauce. I haven’t found a bottled kind that I like but I’ve seen this one around and for some reason never thought to pick it up. It’s on the list now :D
    Happy weeeeeekend.

Oh I forgot to mention – I also voted for you. All those photos are incredible. Now I wish we had a different photographer for our wedding. Lucky girl you are :D

I am crying. Janetha, I am still so very sorry about this. I can’t stand the thought of losing a pup. That’s why I tell myself mine will live forever. Unfortunately, I know that can’t be true.

    Anyway, love you.
