i challenge YOU. (and flashback friday).

April 30, 2010

hello!

i don’t have a lot of time BUT, as usual, i have a lot to say~ so here we go :)

so i was scheduled to get my engagement photos today. BUT~ only in utah on the last day of april.. it’s been snowing.

IMG_0748

so, the photos are a no-go. but we are going to go to the jazz game instead, so that’s good! (GO JAZZ!)

we will just have to do our photos another day, when the sun decides to shine.

a special announcement before i tell you about my challenge for you.

foodbuzz has launched a new feature called healthbuzz which is a whole section devoted to healthy living, cooking and exercising!  i am so excited about healthbuzz.  the BEST part about it (for me!) is that i was selected to be a contributing health editor and my posts will be featured in the healthbuzz  section of the foodbuzz website. sweet! go nose around healthbuzz, it just launched today and it looks as though it is going to have a ton of awesome posts, recipes, workouts and information regarding specific health issues.  april’s focus is children’s health.

i am really excited to be a part of this new endeavor!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
okay guys. this is it. i’ve thought up a may challenge for each and every one of you, whether you have a blog or not, you can totally participate!
allow me to introduce the
WAKEUP CALL CHALLENGE!
some of you may know that i have been trying to become a morning person. not even a morning WORKOUT person.. just a morning person in general.  but it is safe to say that i don’t do mornings.  i am always running late because i can’t pull myself out of bed. granted, penelope jane laying on my face may play a role in keeping me under the covers, but for the most part it is my own fault.
SO.. i decided to challenge myself.  every morning in the month of may, i am going to participate in a plyometric wakeup call.  i have been doing a lot of reading, and word on the street is that it’s a good idea to give your heart rate a jumpstart in the morning so you can keep your metabolism revving all day.  i know that i feel more alert and awake after a cardio workout, so i figure even if i just do a few minutes of some type of cardio in the morning it will help me wake up and hopefully jumpstart my body for the day!  i don’t have any cardio equipment at home and i really just wanted something quick and easy that i know i can commit to every day, so i decided to challenge myself to start each and every morning in may with a short-but-sweet plyometric mini workout.
i initially was just going to make this a goal for myself, but i realized that it was something EVERYONE can do. AND.. there will be two awesome prizes given away to the winners! the best part is you can tailor this challenge to suit your ability and stamina.
here are the details:
things you will need:
  • a stopwatch/timer
  • gym shoes
  • a nice open area (about 5’ x 5’ will do)
that’s it! that is all you will need for this challenge.
what you will do:
  • every morning, before doing ANYTHING else (well, you can put your contacts in and brush your teeth if you want), hop out of bed (easier said than done), throw on your gym shoes (you can stay in your PJ’s for this!) and grab your stop watch.
  • mosey over to your designated floor space and start the timer. do how ever many minutes you desire (but the final minutes will determine one of the prize winners!) of the following plyo moves. try to do each move for a solid minute and then move to another exercise for a minute, and so on. to make it a bit simpler, you can opt to do the moves for 30 seconds each.  you do not have to do ALL these moves, pick and choose the ones you want and alternate through the ones you select:
    • high knees
    • butt kicks
    • mummy kicks
    • log jumps
    • jumping jacks
    • jumprope (with a pretend jumprope)
    • run in place
    • heisman
    • 1-2-3 heisman
    • squat jumps
    • burpees
    • box jumps
    • switch kicks
    • split squat jumps
    • tuck jumps
    • downhill skier jumps
    • any other plyometric moves you can think of. JUST JUMP AROUND LIKE A CRAZY PERSON.
    • here is a video of some plyo moves i like:
  • at the end of your morning wakeup call routine, document the number of minutes you completed. keep a running log, you will turn this into me at the end of the month.
how the prizes will be given out:
  • one prize will go to the person who racks up the most minutes completed
  • one prize will be selected at random out of all participants (through random.org)
  • i don’t know what the prizes will be yet, but i PROMISE that they will be epic! no lame stuff here.. only fantastic prizes :)
(cheesy alert) but remember, EVERYONE participating will be a winner because you will have made leaps and bounds toward your physical fitness!
more info:
  • i plan to do photos/videos of all the above plyometric moves because i realize a lot of them may be foreign to you. in the mean time, do the ones you know or google the ones you don’t know. you can also watch the video of mine above to see some plyometric moves.
  • anyone and everyone can join in the challenge! if you want to join in, please email me at mealsandmoves@gmail.com to let me know you are in.
  • i will periodically send emails out to all participants with more information regarding the challenge and updates on how everyone is doing.
  • if you have a blog, let other’s know about the challenge by linking back to this post!
  • i will create a wakeup call challenge page to track my own progress. just click on the “challenges” page at the top of this page and then select “wakeup call challenge”
i hope that this helps me become a morning person and i also hope that you guys join the challenge with me!  even if you do workout every morning, you can still participate in the challenge because this is something you do immediately when you wake up. do your plyo minutes and then go do you workout.. consider this challenge a warmup!
EMAIL ME NOW IF YOU WANT TO JOIN IN THE CHALLENGE!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

so.. that’s that. and now i will talk a little bit about the highlights between the last time i posted and today.

highlight 1:

i have been eating a lot of bowls of mixed steamed veggies + cottage cheese + ketchup and it is seriously so good. seriously so not pretty, but really tasty!

IMG_0762IMG_0763 IMG_0766

highlight 2:

we booked our cake baker/decorator last night! let me just say that wedding cakes are way pricier than i expected, and i feel bad about that for momma b’s sake, but i know that our cake is going to be AWESOME. i am lucky to have such great parents and i am really excited about the designer~ he has awesome ideas and word on the street is his cakes taste incredible!! plus, he is willing to do hand cut fondant houndstooth design on the cake. yipee!

highlight 3:

last night i was at my parents’ house and we cooked stir fry together. i love getting everyone together in the kitchen and using all the burners and making dinner as a joint effort. i think the end result just tastes better :)

IMG_0780IMG_0781 IMG_0786

highlight 4:

i went to a physical therapist about my ankles today! he has me on a plan~ i have a bunch of daily exercises and i have to do a contrast bath of hot to cold to hot to cold water every night.. and i will be treated by him twice a week. i hope that this fixes me right up! i am excited to run PAIN FREE again one day (soon!)

highlight 5:

i tried the cinnamon flavor of simply bar!

IMG_0769

great stats, like all the rest!

IMG_0770

dang, i think this one is my second favorite (next to the lemon flavor).

IMG_0772

i thought it would be my fave, but the lemon has it beat! i LOVED the cinnamon, and guess what? IT HAS RAISINS IN IT!

IMG_0775 IMG_0776

as some of you know, i *loathe* raisins. BUT.. i have eaten a few things with raisins in them lately (like this simply bar, the alliebars, certain cakes and cereals) and i haven’t really minded the raisins! they used to make me gag, but now i didn’t really notice them. no, i am not going to go eat a handful of raisins, but hey~ i might be coming around!  ironically, today is national raisin day!

if you want to learn more about simply bars or purchase them, check out their website! it is an amazing company!!

well, those are the highlights! i wanted to keep them short and sweet since this post is already fairly long. and it is about to get longer!

********************************************************************************************************

time for flashback friday! today’s flashback friday is going to be short and sweet. i was digging through the old photo box and came across a PLETHROA of photo booth photo strips from JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL

a little tid bit about photo booth photo strips. i’ve always been obsessed with them. love them. whenever i see a booth i beg marshall to get a set of photos (but he usually says no because he hates them).  ever since i was a kid, i’ve wanted to have a photo booth at my wedding. i didn’t care what colors i had or what the dresses looked like or any other details. i wanted a photo booth.  this was back before they became all the rage at weddings, so i was positive it would never be a possibility to ACTUALLY have a photo booth at a wedding (this was back in 1995, folks).  well, fast forward to 2010 and as it turns out everyone and their grandmother rents out photo booths for weddings! super sweet.

needless to say, the very first thing i booked for my wedding was a photo booth.  i am super excited! i had the little logo at the bottom of the photos designed to match our initiations.  wanna see?

image

awwww. so that cute little logo will be at the bottom of our photo booth photo strips and each photo session will print out two strips~ one for the guests to take home and one for them to create a scrap book page for me & marshall.  i am super excited!

so, for this week’s flashback i decided to show ya’ll a slew of the junior high photo booth photo strips. i guess some people called junior high middle school? either way, i was around 13 or 14 years old in these. have a good laugh!! (and please ell me you guys flashed the camera like we did, that was totally normal, right??)

image

image

image

THAT’S A WRAP! maybe next time i will show you the few strips i managed to get marshall to take with me :)

did you participate in flashback friday?  i know that monica and carly did! let me know if you did too so i can link back to your post.

******************************************************************************************

well, that’s all she wrote. i have a busy weekend AND my google reader is inching closer and closer to 400, so i have NO idea what any of you have on tap for the weekend, i hope you all have some fun plans and get to relax a bit! i will try to catch up with you all tomorrow or sunday.

Qs~

1. are there any foods you dislike but are “coming around on” lately? raisins for me. but sweet versions of cottage cheese are still a NO GO!

2. what do you have planned for the weekend? tell me! i love to hear what you are up to :)

xo. janetha b.

    I feel so honored to be photed on your blog. Its a good thing 95% of your readers have no idea who I am. How is it you are still as cute then as you are now. I hope I look cuter than I did then.

    I do strongly dislike eggs but becuase you eat them so much I’m comming aroung slowly but surly.

  2. April 30, 2010 3:30 pm

    Just emailed you!! I’m so in for this challenge!! :)

    1. It’s so funny because the ONLY way I can eat cottage cheese is by adding in sweetener. The way you eat it with the savory veggies does not look good to me. So funny how we’re opposite on this! ;) I used to hate raisins too, but now I love them. You should try yogurt covered raisins… omg!!

    2. Tomorrow I’m running in a 5K!! I’m hoping to get 28 minutes or less. We shall see… :)

    Have a wonderful weekend, Janetha!! :)

    In my day, we wouldn’t have dreamed of flashing! I blame Britney for that. Lol. I’m sitting
    in a parking lot bc I’m super early for my job interview. Any minute now…..Reading your blog helped calm me. Homework over the weekend and lots of housework. BORING!

  4. April 30, 2010 3:45 pm

    Hahahahaha – LOVED the photobooth pics, Janetha!
    Lovely post, as usual :)
    Have a wonderful weekend, lovie!

    hahahahahahaha………you girls were crazy!!!

    YES count me in on the challenge, sounds like a blast!!! I have tried to do 200 jumping jacks every morning, but I sometimes forget and just go do my workout, but I will faithfully do this challenge because hey I wanna win a prize!!

    Watermelon is at Costco – picking out tip – find one that has a lot of the yellow liney stuff and bee sting looks to it, so far I am 2 for 2 this year!!

    GO JAZZ!!

  7. April 30, 2010 4:21 pm

    Congrats on being a healthbuzz contributor! That is VERY exciting!! The challenge sounds great, but since I already wake up at 4:30 for work most days…I don’t think I’ll be able to participate! BUMMER about the snow, but the cake sounds amazing! I cannot wait to see it. Stir fry is one of my favorite go to dinners.

    1. I used to hate peppers and peas and now I love them both.
    2. Teaching, out to eat, into charleston and taste of the nation!!!!!

  8. April 30, 2010 4:28 pm

    Haha, FLASHback Friday. =D Your photo booth pics are so funny! I love taking them! Can I come to your wedding? =P Hahaha

    Okay, I am in love with cottage cheese as well. I am finding new ways to eat it every day. For example, when I got home from spinning/weight lifting tonight, I had a small tea cup of it sprinkled with cinnamon and half of a Nature’s Path Maple Flax granola bar chopped up and mixed in. HEAVEN! The maple was so dang good in it! I know you don’t like sweet combos, but have you tried maple in it? It sort of tasted like cheesecake. :D

    hahaha i know your cake is going to be STELLAR. you wouldn’t have it any other way.

    p.s. stir frys = amaze.a.ballz

  12. April 30, 2010 4:46 pm

    No big plans for the weekend here. We will hang out with some friends tomorrow and then just chill at home besides church on Sunday. I actually look forward to having a break.

    Love the photo montage! I can’t say I’ve ever flashed a photo booth camera but I have flashed in other situations before.

    Oh…and I wish I could enter the challenge but my first thing in the morning is my quiet/prayer time that I need right now. And I am hesitant for all the plyo stuff right now with my stupidly sensitive body/hormones/uterus.

  13. April 30, 2010 5:18 pm

    We are deifnitely morning people. Up at 4:30 am every morning to train. I love it though (well, when I have my coffee first though, haha!).
    Oh and I am definitely with you on the cottage cheese/veggie ketchup mix. I think I have one of those concoctions daily. So refreshing! Have a great weekend, stay warm! My husband is racing in California and I am in Dallas for a half marathon. Can’t wait til monday now. :)

  14. April 30, 2010 5:25 pm

    I am coming around on yogurt…..slowly but surely!!

  15. April 30, 2010 5:32 pm

    You are so cute! I love your blog girl and congrats on the health post gig!

  16. April 30, 2010 5:39 pm

    I love plyo!! If I wasn’t head first into P90X , I would so do the challenge :( ‘I am getting up at 5am to workout though if that counts ;)

  17. April 30, 2010 5:44 pm

    Haha, the photo booth flashing is awesome.

    Have you mixed salsa with cottage cheese? Really tasty.

    I’m kind of coming around on eggplant. Not really that much though.

  18. April 30, 2010 6:13 pm

    Ah, get out! Snow in May?!?! That’s crazy.

    THis sounds like a good challenge, but I am already up at 4am pounding out the miles on the treadmill. I don’t think I can afford to loose any more sleep for more cardio but I wish you the best of luck with it girly.

    Hmmm, foods I just can’t get into….Mayo! Never ever!

    I plan to work in my garden, take a trip to the farmers market, and go to a b-day party in Philly. Should be grand.

    Hope yours is amazing love! :)

  19. April 30, 2010 6:48 pm

    I’m kinda obsessed with CC lately, so I must try this cottage cheese-ketchup combo you speak of.
    I am headed to a strawberry festival this weekend!

  20. April 30, 2010 7:08 pm

    oh my gah there was a photobooth at a wedding i went to last year AND IT WAS AWESOME!!!

    Girl you said your veggie cottage cheese bowl doesn’t look tasty but it sure does to me! The way you put the ketchup on it makes it that more appetizing!

    I had no idea it was watermelon season already. Yessss!

  25. April 30, 2010 8:01 pm

    OMG the photo booth at your wedding is the coolest thing I’ve heard! I love those things too! How fun.

    I’m definitely up for the challenge! I do my P90X workouts in the morning but lately I’ve been having a hard time getting up in the morning so I end up postponing my workouts until I get home from work so that I can press snooze. This will get my blood pumping and amped to get down and do my workouts!

  26. April 30, 2010 8:40 pm

    That last pic is the best! :) Ahhh so many foods I barely like but might come around too – ALL VEGGIES.

  27. April 30, 2010 9:02 pm

    I just ordered a few PB Chocolate Simply Bars! I’ve never seen such stellar nutrition stats on a bar! And I’m super pumped for the May challenge!

    A used to think I hated macadamia nuts, but after trying them again a month or two ago, they’ve become a major player in my life! Can’t get enough of them!

  28. April 30, 2010 9:40 pm

    i got non salted cottage cheese once thinking i’d eat it “sweet”. i agree, it’s a no-go for me too!!

    well since today’s post, i’m going to let “eating out” come back into my life. i used to eat out a LOT – and not even unhealthy either but since ED, i just freak out about food that i dont personally prepare but now i’m going to let it come back into my life!!! woo hoo.

    i love your challenge. challenges are what i live for. it’s a good motivation and a nice change.

  29. April 30, 2010 9:46 pm

    I can’t believe that there’s snow!!! You poor guys.
    Photobooths are so much fun! I was almost in tears when they took the oldschool ones away from the train stations.
    Family dinners are the best – you can just feel the love in the dishes ;).

  30. April 30, 2010 10:31 pm

    Congratulations on being a healthbuzz contributing editor!!!! That’s so cool and I’m so happy for you!!

    I WISH I could sleep in. I’m already a morning person.

    This weekend…running my kids to choir practice, going to a friends house, and church. Nothing unique but all special. :-)

  31. May 1, 2010 4:17 am

    Congrats on being a Heathbuzz contributor! So cool :)

    Great challenge! I would participate if I weren’t doing my own early-rising challenge/training for a half marathon! Good luck with it!

    LOVE the wedding logo! So cute!! And those photobooth photos. So fun!

    Lets see, foods I disliked… I like maca powder now, which I used to hate, as well as canteloupe & honeydew melon which I never really preferred.

    Last nigh N & I went to see The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which was incredible, today we are going sailing, then out to dinner, then tomorrow we are going to a fun exhibit & dinner with his grandma! Phew! Busy but fun :)

  32. May 1, 2010 5:45 am

    Love, love, love the photobooth pics. I don’t have nearly enough of those from my high school years. It’s so fun that you booked one for the wedding though!!

    I don’t have a problem with most foods…I’m a lover or a hater, and there’s very few things I hate! I have come to love eggplant recently though!

    This weekend…BF’s formal tonight and hopefully some studying!! Maybe :) Hope you’re having a great one!!

  33. May 1, 2010 6:50 am

    Ohmygosh, you know how you say pictures of fruit and cottage cheese make you gag a little? Well I think that’s just what happened with that ketchup and CC picture :P Oh, and I used to loathe raisins too… and now I am obsessed. So there is hope for you yet!

    Oohhh, I love the wakeup challenge!! I am fully confident that you’ll get used to the a.m. workout and eventually enjoy it!! I am really tempted to join in on this challenge, because I need more (or any) plyo in my life. But I’m not even sure where I’ll be sleeping for most of May, so I’m weary to commit to anything. I’ll give it a shout out in my next post though – more people need to try the morning workout thing!

    1. Mustard! I used to hate it, but I started putting a thin layer of yellow mustard on sandwiches, and now I put giant globs. Right now I only love yellow mustard, so I’m working on dijon and the fancier grainy stuff. I’ve tried numerous times to learn to love wine. But every sip still makes me gag uncontrollably. I don’t even like eating the grapes they make wine out of.

    2. Donating and throwing out virtually everything in my closet. Dinner with Chris (we’re saying goodbye, nothing is actually happening there!) and practicing for my practical PT exam with the girl who’s playing the role of my client.

    Have an awesome Saturday Janetha!! <3

  34. May 1, 2010 7:06 am

    Oh goodness, I can’t believe you had snow yesterday! It was about 85 degrees here 90% humidity. I won’t lie, I didn’t leave the A/C other than to walk to dog. It is sickening to break a sweat just by opening your door!

    Love the challenge!

  35. May 1, 2010 7:49 am

    We had a blizzard that was so severe they had to cancel flights! You look adorable as always in ALL your pictures! I wish I had more photo booth pics! Treasure them!! I really wish I had more memories/photographs of the past etc. What made you decide to pick July as the wedding (as in so quickly after your engagement)? I think it’s wonderful, but just wondering whay you didn’t do the ‘engaged for a year’ thing? I have a suggestion for you for the blog- write about what it takes to be together as a couple. You seem to geniunely have a fantastic relationship, and I think it would be great if you let us know how you handle stress, fights, disagreements, daily life etc.
    Love you lots!

    • May 1, 2010 9:30 am

      barbara you are always so sweet! i love your comments! we picked july 17 for a few reasons (which i wrote about here https://mealsandmoves.wordpress.com/2010/02/22/wedding-deets/) but for the most part~ i wanted a summer wedding and didn’t want to wait a year and a half.. so we did it this july. plus we’ve been dating 3 years and won’t live together until we are married (my own rule i set after living with a boyfriend when i was younger) so i figure, why put it off any longer? we really want to live together and just start a life together :) i will have to think about that couples post. that is a great idea but i think it would be SO hard to put into words.. i am no expert on relationships, but i guess i do know a thing or two. thank you for the idea. i hope you have an awesome weekend <3

  36. May 1, 2010 9:13 am

    I love your plyo video and your wakeup challenge! Awesome. May is my month between school and work so I am taking a few weeks to be lazy so I’m not sure if I will want to do the moves but I might try some days!

    Believe it or not, I have no photobooth photos. I recall doing it with a friend once at a store, but other than that I just didn’t do it. I was not cool, lol.

    Foods I’m coming around too: rice! I used to despise it in all forms, but lately I have been wanting some brown rice once in a while. Weird!

    Happy happy weekend!

  37. May 1, 2010 9:38 am

    I’m in!! I used to really dislike broccoli, but I want it all the time now. Oh, and Plain Greek Yogurt :)

  38. May 1, 2010 10:21 am

    Oh that challenge sounds cool! I’ll let you know if I”m participating :-)

    1. Raisins for me too! Weird. I’ve always hate them, but lately have been okay eating them plain! And canteloupe. Have always disliked that too, but recently have liked it.

    2. Nope – work tonight and work tomorrow. Yay weekend! ;-) Also just enjoying the warm weather.

    I so love the flashback photo strips – I had the best times doing those with my girlfriends. You’re so cute! Never thought to flash the camera in any of them..teehee!!!

    I will NEVER like raisins or olives. BLECH!!!

    This weekend I am learning brand new Jazzercise routines and changing around alllllll the furniture in our bedrooms (except ours) to make room for a nursery! YAY!!! :)

  41. May 1, 2010 12:11 pm

    I love the idea of a houndstooth cake! I heart houndstooth in a big way. Happy May!

  42. May 1, 2010 12:25 pm

    I also am NOT a morning person. The thought of waking up and jumping around in no way sounds appealing to me but good luck! :)

    1. I swear there isn’t a food out there that I don’t like. HA! I used to HATE shellfish when I was younger though. THE HORROR! Then one day I decided to try shrimp and fell in love. Scallops, crab, lobster and clams followed shortly after and I’m officially addicted. I don’t eat them enough though. WHY IS THAT??

    2. I was off Friday and spent it shopping, drinking and snacking at the winery and grabbing dinner and beers out with the Mr. and some friends. Feeling a bit “off” today because of it but I did manage to get a good workout in this morning. I might spend the rest of the weekend just relaxing. I NEED IT!

    ;)

  43. May 1, 2010 8:53 pm

    Snow in late April? Really? It’s 85 hot and humid here so I say let’s trade. I am so a cold weather girl.

    I won’t be joining the challenge, as my 45-year-old carcass needs time to wake up in the morning before I do any jumping around. But your plyo demo video inspired me to try some of these plyo exercises in my interval cardio circuit today. They really got my heart rate pumping! I’ll definitely be checking out the exercises on the list and will undoubtedly be plyotizing my interval circuits from now on — thanks for the inspiration :-)

    I never liked tomatoes but since forcing myself to eat just a few cherry toms these days I actually like them, normal sized toms are still a big no no for me though! x x
