blessings in disguise.

April 27, 2010

*HELLO* my power was OUT last night when i typed this.. and so i had to publish this  wednesday morning. ~ such is life! pretened it is tuesday night :)

situation: i was late for work today.

blessing in disguise: i was still home when my co-worker text me asking me to bring her one of my contigo water bottles to borrow. score for her!

image

situation: i am all out of EAS vanilla protein powder (which is the powder i use for my protein oats). but i still have a whole BAG of the chocolate EAS.

blessing in disguise: i now have a reason to eat mighty maple chocolate protein oats day in and day out.

IMG_0659

346 calories, 11g fat, 27g carbs, 37g protein

by the way, i documented the making of this bowl of oats and added a meals page for this recipe. check it out here.

situation: i was called into a meeting RIGHT as i was about to eat my lunch. i had already fixed it and everything.

blessing in disguise: i ended up chugging a ton of water to stave off my hunger and i hit my 1-gallon-of-water-a-day-goal before eating lunch.

IMG_0664

this was 1 tumaro’s garden wrap, 3 chicken fingers (left over from last night’s dinner), hummus, hot & sweet mustard and sprouts~ all rolled up.

IMG_0666

i had mini bell peppers & snap peas on the side:

IMG_0668

oh. yeah. the photo? only one snap pea there.

IMG_0667

i ate the rest of them while i was in my impromptu meeting. before my food photo shoot. and i couldn’t really say, “sorry, boss, i value your need for my opinion but i have to go get a close up of my chicken wrap right quick.” i had about 15 snap peas when all was said and done.

IMG_0669

315 calories, 6g fat, 23g carbs, 35g protein

situation: i am ALL OUT of PB2. yep. out. and that is what i usually use for my greek yogurt/vitatop snack (which was on the menu).

blessing in disguise: i happened to have a jar of sunbutter in the depths of my work cupboards and so i opted to use the sunbutter in the greek yogurt mess instead. UM.. this was delicious! why had i not used sunbutter in this snack before?!

IMG_0674

1/2 cup oikos 0% greek yogurt, one golden corn vitatop and 2 tsp drizzle of sunbutter.

IMG_0676

all mixed up.

IMG_0678

230 calories, 6g fat, 32g carbs, 17g protein

situation: i left my gym shoes at home and couldn’t go straight to the gym after work.

blessing in disguise: i ended up taking an hour long power nap! i was really exhausted for some reason (and i got 9 hrs of sleep last night, so that was weird).. but, when all was said and done, i must have needed the nap. blessing in disguise.

situation: i threw on my gym clothes but *accidently* took a detour to TJ maxx en route to the gym.

blessing in disguise: i found some awesome wedges for my engagement photos and this GIANT coffee mug. and an “M” mug for marshall because the one i previously bought him was broken by his roomie. TRIPLE THREAT blessing in disguise, people.

eventually, i did make it to the gym for a half-assed lower body workout:

yes. it was a half assed workout. something is better than nothing.

situation: i really didn’t even want to go to the gym but i MADE myself go.

blessing in disguise: as i was leaving, i ran into this guy.. he was repping some seriously intriguing protein chocolates. um, what?!

IMG_0679

freaking awesome. and what is even better is i told him about my blog and he gave me some free chocolates. it is nice to be in the business, sometimes. review to come. let me just say that these protein chocolates very well may change my “sweet treat after every meal” deprivation once and for all.

IMG_0686

they are delicious. major blessing in disguise, real glad i made it to the gym tonight!

situation: i haven’t had a chance to review silk purealmond milk and i have been needing to.. for a couple weeks now.

blessing in disguise: i got to eat cereal for dinner! for the sake of the review, right? ;)

IMG_0688

silk purealmond all natural almond milk. let’s talk about it.

i usually use blue diamond unsweetened vanilla almond breeze. i am an addict. i never stray from this brand because the stats of the blue diamond are stellar (40 cals/3g fat/2g carbs/1g protein per 8 ounces) and the flavor is great.

i use almond milk exclusively instead of cow’s milk. i have tried soy, hemp and rice milks but i always go back to almond milk. i just like the taste and texture of the almond milk. those of you who use it will probably agree with me. i use almond milk in cereal, smoothies and anywhere other people use regular milk.

well, mike with silk purealmond milk contacted me and asked if i would be willing to try out and review this new product. while i was on the fence about accepting his offer, after checking out the stats and ingredient list i agreed to give it a whirl.

IMG_0690 IMG_0689

the calories, fat and protein are comparable to my usual almond milk. the carbs are a tad higher, but nothing too horrible.

first i tried it straight up:

IMG_0692

i don’t ever drink milk straight up, but i decided that it was necessary in order to give an honest opinion of the milk.  i was surprised at the sweetness of this almond milk, seeing as how it was the original flavor and not the vanilla flavor. it was definitely sweet. then i checked the sugar grams and saw it was 7g of sugar per 8 ounces. oh, that is why it was sweet.

next i tried it with TJ’s fiber cereal (thanks for sending me some, lauren!)

IMG_0694

this milk is AWESOME in cereal. i am a huge fan of cereal and i know my milks.. and this one definitely passes the test.

final thoughts~

pros:

  • low in calories
  • tastes great
  • inexpensive ($2.99 for a half gallon @ target as opposed to $3.50-$4.50 for other alternative milks)
  • good source of calcium

cons:

  • higher in sugar than i typically like to see (although it is STILL lower in sugar in comparison to other milks, so this could ultimately be a pro, but it is a con for me)
  • higher in calories that my usual almond milk (again, still low cal)

so, as you can see, the only cons that do exist are solely in comparison with the almond milk i usually buy. but the silk purealmond milk is AWESOME. it is delicious and at the end of the day it really does have great stats. i would definitely use it on a regular basis.

fine print: i was contacted directly by silk and did receive their product free of charge, but my opinions are solely my own and i was not paid to write this review.

situation: i really don’t have the desire to type anything else tonight. it is late and i am beat, for some strange reason..

blessing in disguise: you guys have a chance to win free stuff! because when i am unmotivated to ramble, i like to host giveaways.

silk purealmond milk has generously offered to give not one, not two, but THREE lucky meals & moves readers the chance to try their product.

the grand prize winner will get coupons to try the silk purealmond milk along with a super sweet chico bag!

two runners up will receive coupons to try the silk purealmond milk.

to enter, simply leave me a comment telling me what you would use the silk purealmond milk for if you won.

i will announce the winners in my next post. in the meantime, you can click here to get a free coupon for 75 cents off!

situation: the power is out at my house right now.

blessing in disguise: looks like i am going to be able to get a full night’s sleep in tonight!! :)

Qs~

1. any blessings in disguise you have experienced lately that you’d like to share with the class? see above.

2. what is your milk type of choice? almond for meeee.

p.s. i want to thank everyone who told me why my HRM is all skeewompus. and yes, i made that word up.

    1. Meh, it’s finals week and none of my pants fit, I’m not feeling all that blessed.
    2. Skim cows milk.

Oh, and I would pour my winnings over a bowl of Kashi H2H.

I totally understand having a lazy day. I have them every once in awhile too (yesterday was one).

I would love to try Silk Almond Milk in my breakfast cookies or in cereal! I have never tried almond milk because, honestly, it’s sort of out of my teeny tiny budget!

    1. It’s finals week. 3 10-page papers due tomorrow. Blessing? I have two of them done =)

    2. I drink skim milk from cows! (because it’s ridiculously cheap) score!

If I won the Silk PureAlmond milk I would try it in a new vegan pancake recipe I just found!!

P.S. My recent blessing in disguise–I bought some Chaco sandals for over $100.00. I didn’t really have the money for them. On my husband’s day off he went thrift store shopping despite his promise to stay home and clean the house. He found some Chaco’s in my size, practically new, for $2.00! Cha-ching! Back went the Chacos to the store and $100.00 went into my pocket. Thanks, hubs, for NOT cleaning! :)

    have a great day!!!

I would totally make protein “ice cream” with it — I think the extra sweetness would lend itself nicely to my treat!!

I live for blessings in disguise — I’m not religious, but I’m totally a believer in “everything happens for a reason.”

  5. April 28, 2010 7:52 am

I like almond milk, and my fiance, who is a diabetic, drinks the no sugar version of it CONSTANTLY and loves it. He can’t drink cow’s milk and this is such a treat for him.

My favorite kind of milk is usually chocolate soy milk.

I have to ask, now that I’m doing the whole wedding registry thing, is that a Crate and Barrel mug and saucer, with the oats?? (Yes, this is what has become of me)

  6. April 28, 2010 7:56 am

Almond Milk for me too! But I also like regular milk in the skim and 1% varieties, so long as it comes from free range, organic sources aka happy cows :)

Mini peppers: what a janetha-like charm!

  7. April 28, 2010 8:10 am

I would use my winnings for some Fiber Select cereal, most likely….Definitely a cereal girl after your own heart :)

I LOVE the mini peppers! I always buy them at our grocery store when they’re marked with the $1 off stickers. Any other time they’re kinda expensive. I’ll have to check for them at costco!

and don’t you just love TJ Maxx!???? I swear TJ Maxx and Target are my retail-homes-away-from-home! My local TJ Maxx is the best I’ve ever seen (and I’ve seen many) so I am lucky in that respect.

Almond Breeze unsweetened vanilla for me. I use regular cow milk in my cereal and until now haven’t really thought about why I do that. I use the almond milk for smoothies and that is what I would do if I won your give-a-way :)

I have recently started using blue diamond (the vanilla almond breeze is my fave) in cereals and shakes and everything in between. I have also tried soy, and used to be a 2% junkie (yuck! I can’t stand it now!)…I have yet to try the Silk almond milk…I actually almost picked some up last night when I popped into Whole Foods, but ended up getting the blue diamond instead. Instinct I guess!! :)

Oh…and I love you. That is all!

  12. April 28, 2010 8:33 am

I love almond milk, too! I grew up hating milk, so when I came across vanilla almond milk, I fell in lovve.

  13. April 28, 2010 8:33 am

I’d love to use the almond milk in my cereal :) almond milk is always my milk of choice too!

  14. April 28, 2010 8:36 am

I love PB2!! They only sell it at one place in NYC and it’s a nutritionists office. They told me I couldn’t come as often to buy it anymore b/c their actual clients weren’t getting a chance to buy any!! Oops! I don’t think it was b/c I stocked up every time but more because of their lack of supply. I would buy 2 or 3 every time I went and I never saw their shelf stocked with more than 10 jars at a time.

Twinsies! I, too, love the unsweetended vanilla Almond Breeze… they need to start selling it by the gallon! I’d happily try some Silk almond milk in my cereal, oats, and smoothies any day though. Loyalty, shmoyalty? Perhaps. The word “free” will do that to a girl.

Hey girlie! Sounds like the day worked out well (love turning negatives into positives!) I recently tried the new silk almond milk. If you compare it to the cold original almond milk (vs. the unsweetened boxes of almond milk)- the nutritional stats are almost identical. I like them both but the silk is cheaper! So I’ve been starting to buy it more often. I think it rocks. I love it in my protein shakes and with cereal. Deliciousness. Almond milk is totally my milk of choice

I would love to try the Silk PureAlmond Milk. It looks delish and I trust your opinion since you’re an almond milk expert =) I would definitely test it out in a smoothie (I’m still trying to make one I actually like lol) or with a tasty homemade protein muffin!

Right now I use Almond breeze unsweetend vanilla in everything and buy like 4 packages at a time to get through a week and a half, so I wouldnt mind changing it up to see what silk pure almond milk would tast like in all my eats!

  26. April 28, 2010 9:10 am

I love sun butter in everything!!! Its good in oats too!
And silk almond is good but I wish they made an unsweetened flavor because I think the plain is a little too sweet for me. I’ll stick take it though if its free! haha! We go throug a gallon of almond milk about every 3 days because of all the protein shakes we drink. At least we know we’re getting lots of Calcium and Vit. E and D!

skim milk has a lot of sugar, but’s it’s naturally occuring, not added – however the silk almond milk has evaporated cane juice, which is a fancy way to say sugar. i’ll still with my simply smart and uvab thank you!

now to check comments to see why your HRM was acting up (since mine is too!)

  33. April 28, 2010 9:17 am

Protein chocolate sounds really good! Slim-fast used to make bags of protein chewy fudgy things that I liked…100 cals per bag and about 8g protein. Fun change from bars, despite the funky ingredients.

Blessing in disguise: picking up tomato basil chicken instead of the tikka flavour. SO good with hummus (we both had chicken and hummus wraps for lunch! Yay!)

Milk: I like unsweetened chocolate almond breeze, but we don’t get it in the UK (only one kind of almond milk and it is sweetened with Agave and tastes funky). I like rice milk a lot, but usually use soy (for tea) or skim (for coffee). I rarely use milk for cereal anymore…

  34. April 28, 2010 9:20 am

I would use it on cereal and in smoothies. And probably in oatmeal as well.

I never win these things, but I figure it can’t hurt to try! Love your blog, been lurking for a few months.

Love the blessings in disguise. Great way to look at life! I just tried Silk Pure Almond Milk last night as a matter of fact. The only reason I picked it up was b/c it was on sale for 2.69 and I had a 1.25 off coupon (SCORE). I had an open container of Silk Lite Vanilla, but needed a “milk” sub to use for a dish. So, good thing I had the almond milk on hand. I used it to make smashed cauliflower. MMMMM.

I drink cow’s milk for the protein, but I don’t love it because we buy non-organic lactose-free milk, and I wish we could afford organic. SO, when I’m having a protein smoothie, or baking, or something where I don’t care about the protein content, I prefer a milk alternative because I feel like it’s better for the planet. That said, I’ve seen the Silk Almond milk but have yet to try it, so I’d love to win this! Thanks for hosting this contest, my dear.

I usually drink unsweetened soymilk, preferably organic. I’ve tried almond milk a couple of times. I liked the taste but the downside is that it doesn’t provide much protein. i would use the almond milk to make awesome oatmeal in the AM! i don’t eat dairy and just recently found out that i have a soy allergy so, honestly, almond milk is my saving grace. i’m addicted the stuff. i’m a fan of almond breeze so i’m curious to try another brand.

  62. April 28, 2010 10:55 am

I would make protein shakes with it!

How are those corn vitatops? Do they taste like cornbread??

I totally agree with you about liking Unsweetened Almond Breeze over the Silk Pure Almond based solely on their nutritional stats. However, the Silk Pure Almond is fantastic. It goes great with just about anything. I would use it to make my breakfast oatmeal, in smoothies, or in cereal.

  64. April 28, 2010 11:10 am

    Hey Janetha!!
I would use the almond milk in protein shakes…fo sho…and probably some cereal. I’d love to try the silk…I’ve only had the Almond Breeze myself.

Okay – I’m a lame-O and have never made a protein shake with almond milk! I know, I know! I HAVE to be missing out! If I won the giveaway, that is what I would do – make a MEAN green monster with the Silk Almond Milk. And probably get hooked just like you! :)

My FAVORITE milk for drinking/cereal is 8th Continent Light Vanilla Soymilk. For smoothies/shakes I love me some Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Breeze!

If I won Silk Pure Almond milk I would have to try it out in a protein shake after the gym!

  67. April 28, 2010 11:35 am

Almond milk all the way!!! I love it for thick protein shakes! Yum!

  68. April 28, 2010 11:35 am

Hi Janetha…originally I was going respond that I use the Almond milk for my homemade Chai Latte’s…which I do…then I read through the comments and got a ton of more ideas for it’s uses. Protein shakes, protein oats, cereal…oh my! Sounds yumolicious!

  69. April 28, 2010 11:43 am

I would use the almond milk with cinnamon crunch cereal.

  70. April 28, 2010 11:45 am

I actually stood in front of that Silk almond milk for a good 5 minutes at the store yesterday trying to figure out whether to get that or my usual plain Silk soymilk. I could only find the vanilla almond milk though so I went with the soy.

I would love to try the original flavor with some Udi’s granola.

Love the glass half full mentality my dear!

I actually buy Silk’s almond milk quite often because it’s easier to find around these parts that Blue Diamond. One grocery store carries BD, but it’s always out. Grrr…

I enjoy the Silk version and would use it in smoothies. Last night I used it in mac and cheese and it worked great, just in case you were curious.

I like to drink cow’s milk, but I rarely buy it. When I’m going to eat cereal and milk, I prefer 1% organic cow’s milk. But I like almond milk for smoothies, cooking, etc.

  72. April 28, 2010 12:28 pm

I’m definitely interested to give the Silk Pure Almond a try…I’m also an Almond Breeze devotee but am open to new loves. If I won, I would use it in everything I currently use my milk type products in….smoothies, cereal, cream of wheat and pancake batters are the biggies. I will have to think about the blessings in disguise….my life is usually covered in them!! And my milk type of choice is a tie between unsweetened vanilla AB and the SoDel. Coconut Milk…double yum.

  73. April 28, 2010 12:37 pm

    1. Hmm maybe a blessing in disguise that the lunch place we were going to the other day was closed? Because then I got to get a delicious BBQ chicken sandwich somewhere I never go!!

    2. Almond milk. Deff. Blue Diamond at that. I tried Silk, and I also thought it was sweeter. Not bad, but I think Blue Diamond is creamier and works better with my coffee. Silk gives me the same aftertaste as normal milk.

So with that, I don’t need to enter the contest, but just wanted to leave you some lovvveee. :-D

  74. April 28, 2010 12:37 pm

Oh PB2.. my life would be incomplete without it. I ended up pre-ordering mine on the Bell Plantation website and it took.. wait for it.. over 3 months to finally be shipped. So disheartening!
I normally use unsweetened Almond Breeze with my cereal, but I am planning to overhaul my evening snack habits by drinking protein shakes (especially with warmer weather coming) and would like to try the new Silk PureAlmond in my shakes.

  75. April 28, 2010 12:39 pm

love the post my dear! omg I want one of those little spoons from crate and barrel so bad!!! next time I go I am so getting one or two or three…I am obsesssed with spoons!!!

protein chocolate?! interesting! I am all about free samples ;)

situation: I was making chicken last night and it called for bay leaves…there was an empty bay leaf container in my spice cabinet

blessing in disguise: I used the bottle to make a nifty homemade dressing in to bring to work!! I love the size and convience of it!!

I >3 almond breeze!! it really is so much creamier than skim milk! I haven’t tried that brand yet but the ingredient list is kinda long..hmmm…i also have wanted to try coconut milk! have you?! it looks goood!!

    umm what else…I love you?!

  76. April 28, 2010 12:54 pm

I love me some almond milk and I love both brands! Of course I would prefer the lower cal option bc it tastes just as good but I do get this brand a lot more now due to the lower price!

Situation: I had to go to a funeral today of someone I didn’t know well..I wasn’t looking forward to it.

Blessing: I was truly touched and inspired by this man’s funeral. He truly had such an impact on lifes around him and it made me want to have that same impact on people.

  77. April 28, 2010 1:17 pm

I would use it for cereal! Any kind of cereal..haha!

PS- I was wondering about the EAS protein that you use? Do you worry about how much sugar it has? I got the vanilla EAS soy protein and it has 17g sugar per serving!

  79. April 28, 2010 1:46 pm

Seriously, I’d never come up with such a post. So much fun!!
Sounds like you had a great day. Well except for the power thing and such ;)

  80. April 28, 2010 1:53 pm

I’m an Almond Breeze/Almond milk kinda gal!
Omg a nap sounds aaaamazing! I only got like 5 hours of sleep last night and it’s leg day! :/ ICK! This should be fun!

  81. April 28, 2010 2:07 pm

Hi Janetha! You have inspired me to buys some sprouts, random I know but they look so good in your wraps!

Also, for the almond milk.. I use almond milk in practically everything from protein shakes, oatmeal, baking etc. I would really love to try making some of the banana sort serve with it though! (I must be the last blogger who hasn’t tried that recipe)

  82. April 28, 2010 2:09 pm

I would drink it straight up!!

  83. April 28, 2010 2:18 pm

I would use it to eat giant bowls of cereal. Duh! :)

My favorite milk is almond milk too.

  84. April 28, 2010 2:18 pm

I like Silk Purealmond Milk…except for the higher cals, sugar, and carbs. I am using some right now though because I have mucho coupons for it from Kroger. Almond Breeze is my first pick, but when it comes to a small budget, I will buy the runner up if I have coupons.

I still haven’t tried your protein oats…I need to! They look amazing!
I am waiting for my PB2 to come in the mail. It’s on back order…don’t know how long that will be. Guhhh.

  85. April 28, 2010 2:23 pm

I use almond milk every single day in my oatmeal, overnight oats, etc. Ever since I developed my intolerance to soy, it’s been a lifesaver.

    LOVE!!!

  86. April 28, 2010 2:32 pm

I drink a low lactose milk which seems to suit me, I also love almond, rice and any type of soya!

  87. April 28, 2010 2:46 pm

I am actually switching over from Silk Light Chocolate Soy Milk to Silk Chocolate Almond Milk…I can’t wait for my container to finish, so I can try the almond one!

    Thanks for the review!

    I want that coffee mug!!

    1. My biggest one is most recently with finding a subtenant. I DID have some sketchy guy who ended up backing out, and now I have a really nice women subletting instead!

I use unsweetened van almond breeze as well. I sometimes use vanilla hemp milk or unsweetened 365 brand soy milk.

Blessing in Disquise: I go tired of waiting for a clinical spot to open at my current school (Xavier University). So after two years at the school that I loved , I grudgingly transferred to another school. But, I love my new school even more! It’s an exclusively nursing school so I can get in and get my RN so I can move on to finish my BSN!

  103. April 28, 2010 6:50 pm

is it a blessing in disguised i managed to get to this post before you got another one in? me thinks so :) i’ve been drinking unsweetened almond breeze more and more, but sometimes i do go lactose free cow’s (organic if on sale!)

I feel like pretty much everything in my life is a blessing in disguise. If left to my own devices I’m pretty sure I’d make some terrible decisions so when unplanned things happen they usually work to my benefit!

Janetha, loved your positive message in this post. I truly believe that every situation has a blessing in disguise, too.

My blessing in disguise today: I was supposed to tour meet up with my old best friend from Singapore in Seoul, but her mom freaked out abt her traveling alone to Seoul, and she wanted her aunt to TAG ALONG WITH US!!! A bitter, naggy old maid? no thanks!
But it turned out okay: We decided to go to Hong Kong together during my stay in Singapore…which means my stay in Singapore is shortened, but I still get to go to HK, where I have not been to for years.

so it turned out good! :-)

Oh, and almond milk for me, too! BEST for cooking!

I would use the silk almond milk for EVERYTHANG! You’re right, that stuff is some sweet nectar, and though it’s a little higher in sugar, I prefer it to Almond Breeze.
