it’s officially official.

March 30, 2010

hello, blog world!  how did your tuesdays pan out for you? good, i hope. can you believe that there is ONE MORE DAY left in march? time is zooming by. it’s ridiculous.

even though it is almost april, salt lake city still thinks it should be cold, overcast and windy. i felt like dorothy today when walking to my car to leave for work.. i almost blew away!

so.. today was a good day. i am not going to waste any time on the details because i have some rambles to tack onto the end of the post :)

meals

meal 1: mighty maple protein oats @ 9:30 AM

IMG_8824

1/3 cup oats cooked in 1.5 cups water and a bunch of cinnamon on the stove top.. coco asked if that took a long time.. um, yeah. it does. i usually put the oats/water/cinnamon in the pot, turn it to low/medium heat and then leave it for about 15 minutes before coming back to the kitchen to check on it. as long as you have a big enough pot, they will not boil over. the upside to using this much water is you end up with really voluminous oats! seriously, the 1/3 cup of dry oats turns into a giant bowl of cinnamonny glory.

IMG_8822

right at the end of the cooking process, before ALL the water is absorbed, i stir in one scoop of vanilla protein powder and stir vigorously until all the powder is dissolved completely.  the last bit of water is absorbed by the powder and the result is perfect consistency protein oats.

IMG_8825

i topped them with 1 TB of mighty maple peanut butter. can’t forget those healthy fats.

IMG_8823

332 calories, 11.5g fat, 27g carbs, 33g protein

i have nothing to ramble about as far as shenanigans that went down between breakfast and lunch.. so let’s move on!

meal 2: pulled BBQ chicken sandwich @ 12:30 PM

IMG_8832

2 slices of my favorite bread (sunflower market’s cracked wheat bread), nayonaise spread, french’s yellow mustard, a serving of leftover pulled BBQ chicken (from momma b’s on sunday), cucumbers and romaine. perfect.

IMG_8830

i find it so hard to believe that i hated mustard until the age of about 23.  then one day, i fell in love with it. the romance started with wendy’s honey mustard.. then progressed to dijon mustard at sandwich shops, and eventually i became completely and totally into mustard, straight up.

IMG_8828

although i don’t love it as much as marshall.. who dips his french fries in the yellow stuff. he claims he could eat mustard packets all day long. that is something i would like to see. as long as we didn’t have to make out afterward ;)

IMG_8831

so good!

approximately 265 calories, 2g fat, 27g carbs, 33g protein

i got a lot of work done today. month end usually brings a ton of busy work since i do the accounting for the company i work for. gotta love quickbooks.. meh.

before i knew it, it was time for my afternoon snack. i was really wanting a greek yogurt mess.. but i realized i only had 1/4 cup of greek yogurt on hand at work!

sad.

i definitely wanted something sweet, after my savory lunch i was just craving some PB&J lovin.  i had to improvise. stay with me.. this is going somewhere.

i realized i had a container of low fat cottage cheese than expires on thursday (april fool’s day!) and i thought maybe.. just maybe.. if i added the cottage cheese to the greek yogurt and then threw in a plethora of PB2 and raspberry preserves.. i wouldn’t be able to taste the cottage cheese.

IMG_8839

a little background: i HATE cottage cheese as a sweet eat. don’t get me wrong, i LOVE cottage cheese! but it is strictly a savory food for me. always has been. whenever i see those commercials for the cottage cheese that comes with a side of pineapple or peaches or something, i nearly vomit. i am not kidding. i don’t know how you bloggies do it.  yes, i put cottage cheese in my protein pancake batter.. but it is blended in and the flavor is totally masked.

some have told me it is because i need to find low sodium cottage cheese.. but i have looked for it in about 18 different grocery stores with no luck.

anyway.. sweet and cottage cheese are just a no go for me. i have really enjoyed sweet/savory combos lately like ellie’s omelette with cheese and jam, so i figured maybe my taste buds were coming around.

so.. yes. i gave it another shot today. i figured that i really had nothing to lose (except my breakfast and lunch if throwing up was induced upon trying to eat this snack) so i just gave it a whirl.

meal 3: greek yogurt+cottage cheese+PB2+smucker’s sugar free & half of a protein cake @ 3:30 PM

does not look so bad pre-stirred…

 IMG_8837

after the mixage of the jam i got a little weary..

IMG_8840

and i this clumpy, cottage-cheese filled photo almost put me over the edge.

IMG_8843

before trying it, i made half a batch of a vanilla protein cake and broke it up over the top of my concoction.

IMG_8845

285 calories, 7g fat, 18g carbs, 41g protein

that’s better! now you can’t even see the cottage cheese!

IMG_8846

time to try a bite..

IMG_8849

my thoughts???

IMG_8863

EW! it was a salty, peanut butter, raspberry cakey mess of a snack. it was foul.

no can do. i tried to eat as much as i possibly could because i hate to waste.. but in the end, the PB&J cottage cheese conquered me.

IMG_8853

and i quickly chugged a whole contigo to get the taste out of my mouth.

IMG_8874

blech!

it is officially official!! i do NOT dig sweet cottage cheese. maybe if i ever come across the low sodium version i will try it again, but never again with the regular stuff. mark my words.

oh yeah, a few of  you asked to see my bangs. so i snapped a photo. here you go.. i feel silly.

IMG_8867

okay.. moving on!

moves

i got home from work and was planning to do an insanity workout, but my roomie was installing a new light/ceiling fan in my room and the power was shut off.

i decided to go for a lower body workout (body for life style, of course) at the gym.

best part about today’s workout?!?!

IMG_8885

NEW KICKS!

image

yes yes yes.  i did some research and found that the asics GT 2150 shoe is best for my over-pronating running style. this shoe is a motion control shoe.  i had to order them online because it turns out not a lot of ladies like black shoes which means no running stores near me carried the black. only baby blue or pink or other ridiculously girly colors that make me ill. ;)

here is my workout:

meals

i needed some post workout nutrition and i needed it fast.. so liquid was the only way to go!

meal 4: strawberry banana blueberry protein smoothie @ 7:00 PM

IMG_8882

oh, natural light at 7 PM, i love  you.

this had:

  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup vanilla almond milk
  • ice
  • 1/2 frozen banana
  • a few strawberries
  • xanthan & guar gums
  • spinach
  • 1 serving tera’s whey blueberry protein powder!

okay, so it is expensive.. and i use it sparingly.. but when i use it.. YUM FACTOR!

IMG_8880

approximately 230 calories, 3g fat, 28g carbs, 26g protein

after i drank this i opened up my laptop and typed everything you just read. and it is an hour and a half later. yeah, it takes me awhile to blog. things happen in between. i got cold so i turned the fireplace on. someone came to the door to ask if we needed our law aerated. i text emily because i miss her. i turned the fire off because i got hot. i went pee. i watched a little say yes to the dress. i checked facebook a few times. and now we are current!

i am going to go make some dinner, and then eat it.. and come back here and write about it before publishing this post. ok? be right back!

oh, hello! it is now 9:52 and i just finished dinner :)

meal 5: chicken & roasted broccoli pasta @ 9:30 PM

IMG_8888

to make this dish, i used the leftover flax-coated baked chicken from yesterday, diced it up and re-heated it in a skillet. i roasted about a cup and a half of broccoli florets in the oven at 435 degrees for about 20 minutes. i cooked an ounce of whole wheat thin spaghetti noodles.  when everything was nice and warm, i tossed it together with 2/3 cup of sunflower market’s basil marinara sauce.  finally, i topped it with some fat free feta.

IMG_8892

i didn’t figure out the statistics because i am lazy, but i believe it was a very balanced ratio.. protein from the chicken, feta and pasta (it was pretty high in protein!), carbs from the pasta, marinara and broccoli. fat from the olive oil i used to coat the broccoli before roasting it. perfect!

i ate it in my lap while reading blogs. i tell it like it is, people!

IMG_8899

this was so delicious, i am kind of sad it is gone!!

IMG_8897

****************************************************

a few questions answered!

i am slowly working on creating a FAQ page for the blog.. you all asked me a slew of questions awhile back. i decided that since it is taking me SO long, i would start posting a few of my answers in my posts every now and then. enjoy!

kyko asks:

“how tall are you, how old are you (sorry!) and how many calories do you eat per day? You’re very active!”

my answer:

i am 5’1” and i will be 27 on june 1.  i don’t mind sharing my age, so don’t be sorry!

i don’t necessarily count how many calories i eat in a day.  since i started officially doing body for life again, i have been tracking my meals but there is no real way to tell exactly how many calories i take in.  i don’t like to measure food and i don’t have a food scale so i cannot weigh out my food.  if i had to put a ballpark number on how many calories i eat each day, i would say it is between 1500 and 1800.  on free day (which is usually saturday) i could not even begin to tell you how many calories i eat! honestly it is probably around 2500.  maybe more.  i am not joking.  i definitely think this higher calorie day does wonders for my metabolism! i just have to make sure to get right back on track the next day so my calorie intake does not get out of control  ;)

thanks for your question and i hope that answered it well enough!

mary asks: “why did you start blogging?”

my answer:

i LOVE this question, mary! i don’t think i have talked about this in a long time!  let me tell you.

i used to have a “regular” blog, where i would occasionally blog about this or that.  later on, i had a blog dedicated to body for life.  this only lasted a short while.  i had NO idea about food blogs this whole time.

one day i was looking for a photo of an omelette pan that i bought so i could show it to my mom.  google images brought up a photo of the pan and the photo was hosted on a food blog.  enter: clicktastic city.  i read that blog in almost all of it’s entirety and then i started clicking on her blogroll. and then clicking on the blogrolls of those blogrolls. it was a snowball effect and i was hooked.

i always posted the national food holidays on my facebook, but that was the extent of food photos in my life. aside from the occasional recipe on my other blog.

a week later, i went to mexico. i pondered this whole “food blog” phenomenon and i was really into it. i decided that i wanted to start one. bad. i was so down with the concept! i couldn’t believe there was a whole world of food bloggers that i had JUST stumbled upon. it was like i found buried treasure! i was ecstatic.

upon returning home from mexico, i started my blog.  i adopted the name from one of my body for life friend’s witty slogans~ so no, “meals and moves” was not MY idea. give credit where credit is due :) i WAS going to call it “vanilla bean and everything in between” but that just seemed waaay to long. plus i am a sucker for alliteration, so meals & moves it was.

the five main reasons i started my blog:

  1. i love to work out.
  2. i love to cook.
  3. i love to write. love it, love it.
  4. i wanted to lose a little weight and wanted to stay accountable through documentation.
  5. i wanted a place to express my daily thoughts and use it as an outlet for many things.. including (but not limited to) creativity, ideas, frustrations, happy times, sad times, photos, etc.

one reason i did NOT start blogging was the blogging community. when i started the blog, i had no freaking clue there was a whole world of amazing people that i would eventually become friends with. i consider this result the best reward for blogging.. and it was totally unintentional. amazing.

well, there are a couple Qs answered for you guys! there are a lot more where that came from. remember, you can always ask me anything. i am not shy and i will answer anything and everything!

i am going to call it a night.. waffle wednesday and last day of the month tomorrow.. hope you guys enjoy it!

Qs~

1. if you have a blog, why did you start it? and how did you come up with your blog name? if you don’t have a blog what is the reason for not having one? can’t wait to hear your answers! i answered the first two parts of this question above.. but if i didn’t have a blog, my answer would be along the lines of the TIME it takes to blog. seriously, that would be the only reason i would ever not have a blog.

2. what is the last thing you tried and HATED? see meal 3 above for my answer. yuck. i have a feeling a lot of your answers will be protein cake.. i have heard a lot of people have had protein cake flops…

    I love your Q & A’s! :)

I started a blog when the toddler was born to document his life, and I then somehow discovered “mommy blogs.” About a year ago, I started Andrea’s Wellness Notes to focus more on living a healthy life; it was really just my own online journal, and the name seemed natural… When I started the blog I wasn’t aware of other healthy living blogs out there. I think I actually came across one through one of the mommy blogs I was reading. It took me several months before I discovered and interacted more with other bloggers…

ooooooh lo siento about the cottage cheese woes. i looooooooove sweet CC–but im also obsessed with all things sweet and salty so maybe my wacky tastebuds just dont mind the mingling of flavors. at least you confirmed your longstanding suspicion. have a good week, amor! xox

  3. March 30, 2010 9:42 pm

I hate sweet cottage cheese! I just had a conversation about this at work yesterday and everybody else said they liked it, so I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who thinks it’s gross!

  4. March 30, 2010 9:57 pm

I’m the same way about cottage cheese, but by the end of my first BFL challenge I was eating like a pound a week. My trick, I blended it smooth in my magic bullet and added enough sweetener (at the time it was splenda) and vanilla extract to take away the saltiness. I’d throw some blueberries and almonds on top and that was my go to Meal 4 every day. Have you tried blending it??? Oh, it’s also good blended with cocoa powder and peanut butter in it (since peanut butter is salty anyway). But yes, any dairy product with lumps in it is repulsive in my book.

  5. March 30, 2010 10:06 pm

Love the bangs and that picture is adorable!

I started blogging as a way to hold myself accountable when I was training for my first figure competition. Since I was doing the competition solely as motivation to lose weight I called it Competing to Lose. I ended up getting tons of encouragement from random people who found my site through google or online communities. :-) After a while I realized that competing to lose just didn’t fit anymore so I decided to name my blog after all the women who have inspired me or will inspire me, my Girl Heroes!

As you know ;-) I had no clue until recently that there was such an awesome community of bloggers.

  6. March 30, 2010 10:09 pm

It took me a REALLY long time to just try cottage cheese with something sweet! I eat it with jam or dates spread. Not too bad. But still eat it savory 90% of the time.

  7. March 30, 2010 10:24 pm

March went by so quickly!! I’m ready for Spring though : )

I have a love/hate relationship with cottage cheese. I’m in a hate phase. Gross.

I started a blog for many reason just like you– I have always been passionate about health/nutrition and wanted a venue to vent/share everything I’m learning!

Peace.Love.Nutrition–don’t really know where that came from but I’m guessing thought of it after I seeing Eat.Pray.Love somewhere…I didn’t realize how similar they were till months later when my boyfriend pointed it out though!

I love, love, love your answers!!! :-D

The name of my blog is Healing With (Raw) Juices. I started it because I’ve experienced amazing healing through raw foods, juices, and juice fasting. In my 20’s, I barely escaped domestic violence with my life. I was badly injured and went through a LOT of health issues, tests, surgeries, and pain. Because of the surgeries, medication, and lack of mobility (I eventually was bedridden for a while) my weight ballooned up to near 300 pounds.

I began searching online for any shimmer of hope – hope that I could lose the weight, improve my health, and not die (yes, doctors told me I may not live to see 30 my health was so horrific).

The more I researched, the more I was drawn to raw, live juices and juice fasting.

    I found my answer.

Through raw foods, juices, juice fasting, I’ve lost over 100 pounds and my health improved dramatically.

I’m still not as healthy as I’d like to be – and I suffer horribly from my back (from domestic violence) but life is SO much better now.

I knew I had to start a blog sharing my journey and things that have worked for me. It’s SUCH a blessing to be on this side of the screen now, sending out hope to those who are on the other side, searching for something to help them on their own health journey….

    And your smoothie looks awesome!!!

(Sorry for the long comment!) ;-)

    Hugs,
    Michele

Hi hottie! WEll i started my blog b/c i read other blogs (much in the total suck-in mode you did not knowing anything about them and then bam, found like 200 in 2 days ) but after a month or so of reading and realizing that the good ones inspired me and the bad ones with misinformation or horrible pics could be called a “blog” then i too could do one. With raw recipes that were not DOGMATIC or preechy. And incorporate yoga. As i was sick of only seeing running blogs or christian-based yoga blogs and wanted to put my spin on it. If i ever quit the blog it will SOLELY be due to time suck issues. It’s a royal timesuck.

Thx for your encouragement re me posting pics of my progress. In a bikini. We shall see…

  10. March 31, 2010 2:25 am

    hey love!

do you hate me beacuse I have PINK nikes?!?! well they are white and pink but still quite girly haha…I love those kicks though! theblack is stellarrr and looks great on you :)

I also LOVE sweet cottage cheese, I have acutally only had it a few times savory and its ok, but for ME? I love it with the sweet stuff-SF jam, PB, protein powder mmm

you must try the low sodium kind! in itself, it has a much more savory taste and actually quite bland, so it will mix well with your ranch and chickpeas :) I wish I could send it to you!!!

your pics are outta this world, and had me drooling even over the mustard on the bread pic!

–last thing I tried and hated…TEMPEH! blehhh i cannot stomach that, and I have tried so many times with the thought in mind “oh i will like it better this way” and nooooo I don’t!

I started blogging because i was inspired by other bloggers like YOU!

  11. March 31, 2010 3:36 am

I started my blog purely because I was SO bored at work and had nothing to do. I has totally been worth it!

  12. March 31, 2010 3:40 am

I miss Emily too!! It’s been a while since she popped up in my reader… It takes me an hour to blog as well. I’m obsessive about sentence structure, grammar and spelling, I can’t seem to just hammer it out and hit publish like some people. (regardless of whatever mistakes fly under my radar!) Silly you are not – that photo is totally cute!!

Okay. The cottage cheese thing. This breaks my heart. But I understand. Sometimes I add a packet of stevia to sweeten it up, but I suspect my sweet tooth is a little more present than yours (no way I could eat greek yogurt plain). I’m going to look into shipping refrigerated dairy cross-border. You need to try the low-sodium stuff!!

    1. I started blogging as a fun way to document the process of my first triathlon, and a way to make sure I actually did it! (seriously, it probably wouldn’t have happened without that blog). I blog now because I LOVE to write. It’s my job, my life, everything. I can’t imagine doing anything better with my spare time – especially being able to write about whatever I want. I have some lofty goals of helping people through my blog, even if it is just giving them a waffle recipe ;) Ellie came up with my blog name, she gets full credit for that! Although, at the time I think I only sent her a couple Clif bars…

    2. Steak. I just can’t like it no matter how many times I try it. It’s…bland.

cottage cheese for me is a savory meal… I mean I like adding it to oatmeal precisely because it’s salty!!! I haven’t tried any dish that is sweet … can’t imagine it.
    1. I started blogging to record my life in US, to vent, to share my thoughts/ideas about food/health/family/love etc… I think it’s like writing an open diary with feedbacks.
    2. I bought 3 tubs of greek yogurt last week, i don’t hate it, but I don’t like it anymore :( how weird, I used to be obsessed with it.

  14. March 31, 2010 3:57 am

I LOVE mustard too! I think it’s always been my favorite condiment. Even when I was little, I just to dip just about everything in mustard and then end up just eating it straight up off my fingers. Haha, kind of gross, but I would be lying if I said I still don’t do this from time to time! ;)

Aww, sorry you didn’t dig the sweet cottage cheese. I adore cottage cheese and jam. I think it’s so fantastic, but I guess it’s all in the eye of the beholder. :)

    Have a wonderful day hun!

  15. March 31, 2010 5:07 am

Yum, mustard! I am not a huge fan of sweet cottage cheese- but it’s more of a texture thing for me. I’ll eat it every so often.

I started my blog after I was reading Jenna from Eat, Live Run’s blog- I read almost the entire thing one weekend on winter break of my freshman year of college. I decided- I love food, I love to write, I have something interesting to put out there… so I started mine! Now I read SO many, and I love the fblog community!!

I made a smoothie the other day with my new brown rice protein… bleh. Grainy and just eww…

Have a great weekend if I do not respond from now until then- I will be away!

My stupid computer ate my comment..
Anyway, I’m glad that I’m not the only one who hates sweet cottage cheese. It’s just so ugly!! Blegh.
Well I started my blog because I was kind of bored of all these US based blogs. Not that I don’t love them (I DO!) but I kind of wanted to show that you can eat healthily in other countries too ;). Plus I like ranting. lol

  17. March 31, 2010 5:17 am

I used to hate mustard as well, and now I can’t get enough. Have you ever tried it as a salad dressing? Sounds weird, but it’s delish!!

I started blogging after lurking on other peoples’ for awhile. The Fitnessista was the first I discovered, followed by HTP and then all the others (yours was pretty early on as well!) I started it because I love healthy food, and being a part of this community helps me feel more confident in my choices!!

I try mushrooms every couple of months, hoping I like them, and never do. I wish I could, but they make me gag!!

Have a great hump day love!!

  18. March 31, 2010 5:27 am

i try *so* hard to love cottage cheese, but i think i’m gonna give up. i just don’t like it, sweet or savory. meh.

i started a blog because i am (mildly) obsessed with food and wanted to channel this obsession to the world… or something. it’s a way to share my obsession, and maybe turn it into something healthier? sigh. let’s hope!

  19. March 31, 2010 5:30 am

Weird! I hated mustard too!!! Honey mustard was the gateway to the real deal. I loooove it now.

you know I looove some sweet CC. try dipping apples into it? Its like apples and cheese. well it is. oh well…

Hey your birthday is the same as my sisters!

I started one cause I love reading everbody elses blogs and wanted to share some of my persepctive too!

The last thing I tried and hated was…. gatoraid. it wasn’t a try, but I haven’t had it in about 10 years. I bought it for its performance reasons but I couldn’t even finish it. it left the worst taste in my mouth, I guess its all the sugar. yuck!

  20. March 31, 2010 5:38 am

I am right with you on the cottage cheese being savory not sweet. I’ve tried adding in the flavored protein powders like I keep reading people doing – ick. Fruit, not so much. Plain – yes.

I started blogging because I had hopes of inspiring others to eat healthy, to teach people that vegetarian and vegan recipes are NOT boring, and that fitness and weight lifting (especially) are fun. I just jumped in with both feet not really having a clue what would happen. I have learned so much and “met” so many inspiring people as a result.

  21. March 31, 2010 5:52 am

that oatmeal method sounds awesome! I used to LOVE cottage cheese and mustard. Now I pretty much hate them both. :)

I started blogging about 2.5 years ago with a personal blog, doing just this and that kind of post. But a lot of my posts were about food and fitness, so I decided to start my own blog dedicated to just that. :) I wrote down a huge list of names for my blog – I also love alliteration – and A Foodie Stays Fit just felt right. :) I also had no idea I’d make so many “blends.”

  22. March 31, 2010 6:04 am

Thanks for the protein oats clarification!!!! I’m gonna try that goodness tomorrow! Yummy to the rest of your eats. I tried that tera whey protein powder and that stuff is the BEES KNEES! LOVE IT.

Olla, I always LOVE reading your posts!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m sipping on my Green Monster and looking at your picture and mine just doesn’t have that vibrant green color. I think I need a magic bullet. My green monster recipe is similar to yours but this morning I decided to a tsp of coconut oil and OMG!!!!!!!!!!!! so good

Oh, I always put my oatmeal in the microwave for about 1min and 70sec because I like a bit eldente (sp).

First off, I HATE yellow mustard with a passion. I can only eat BOARS HEAD spicy brown mustard. And I’m so sorry to hear that you don’t like cottage cheese. I didn’t in the beginning but as I get older (43) my taste bud is changing. My favorite brand of cottage cheese is by FRIENDSHIP and it’s WHIPPED. I bet you would love that. NO LUMPS! I’m going to have to try your cottage cheese concoction.

I saw that you posted the ingredients for the protein cake. Do you bake or put in microwave.

BLOG: I’ve been thinking about starting a blog myself. I have so much going on in my head and nowhere to unload it. Sometimes I feel like my head is going to explode. Hahaha. And FACEBOOK just doesn’t do it for me. But I am terrible writer. PLUS I’m one of those people who has to research and research before making a move. So it’s on my to do list to figure out “How to blog on WordPress for dummies”. Kekekeke

My last flop was with siggi’s greek yogurt. I really wanted to like it but the consistency was NOT for me. YUCK.

As to the blog question….I love to write, I love food, and I love taking pictures! So far it has been a great decision :-)

  25. March 31, 2010 6:56 am

I literally started my blog because I had started reading them since I was so beyond bored at work, and though it would be a lot of fun to do too! I’m glad I did, I love it! It kept me very entertained at work, and now even though I moved and don’t work there anymore, it’s a hobby I wouldn’t want to give up.
Last thing I hated…I don’t know. My tastes have been changing a lot lately, so it’s hard to say!

  26. March 31, 2010 7:00 am

    1. Honestly, I liked other people’s blogs so much that I thought I’d try it for myself. No big reason other than that. I was writing about fitness/eating etc in the Oxygen forums and the blog community seemed a bit more open and friendly so here I am. Also, I’d agree with the time thing. It’s hard with work adn school etc. And well, I’m an Okie is pretty self explanatory—people from Oklahoma are called Okies! I wear the title with pride ;).

    2.daisy cottage cheese. Bleh.

  27. March 31, 2010 7:07 am

don’t feel bad about the cottage cheese! I’m a hater, too :) Except, I just won’t eat it at ALL unless it’s in a recipe of some sort. I have never liked it just as a snack on its own. In pasta? Fine. Just with peaches or something? Blech.

I started my blog to keep my family up to date with us (they all live a few hours away) and to share recipes! They were always asking what we were eating, and after finding TONS of food blogs, I thought it would be fun.

It’s been an amazing journey over the past year and I’ve had some awesome opportunities that I would have never had otherwise, but it is a LOT of time!

Oh, and Nick came up with my blog name :)

  28. March 31, 2010 7:08 am

I started to blog in an effort to show people that you if you follow a balanced diet and exercise you don’t have to deprive yourself of anything! I’ve had several friends/family members with eating issues and I want people to realize that food is fuel not our enemy!

  29. March 31, 2010 7:25 am

    I love your blog!
Your recipes and photos are great! I am going to try your protein cake ASAP.
I recently started a blog because I love reading other blogs on cooking, fitness, arts and parenting.
By the way about cottage cheese — I don’t know if this will help with the sweet vs. savory dichotomy, but in terms of texture, it’s the way to go for me (I never liked the curdled thing): When I buy a container of cottage cheese, I immediately whip the whole thing up in my food processor and store it in said container. That way, whenever I need to use it, it is already in a wonderful, creamy consistency state — kind of like sour cream without the tang. I use it in both savory and sweet dishes alike. It is awesome!

  30. March 31, 2010 7:30 am

OH NO! I’m so sad you had another bad experience with sweet cottage cheese! I wish I could mail you some low sodium kinds but I’m not sure that would work out to well :)

I love that you rock black shoes. I used to in high school but that’s because I played basketball…we had to look tough.

Honestly I started my blog because I was bored after all the hoopla from our wedding was over. I started reading a few diet type blogs which snowballed into food blogs and the rest was history! I’ve gone through some phases on what type of blog I wanted to write but now I just write about whatever the heck I feel like!

  31. March 31, 2010 7:39 am

My blog came about because I used to do crunches ALL the time at cheerleading practice. Wearing such tiny uniforms, I needed to keep my abs in check. And I’ve always loved cupcakes, eating them, pictures, Johnny Cupcakes t-shirts, etc. :)

I looove the shade of green of your GM. My goal is to make a SERIOUS green monster that looks that cool!

  32. March 31, 2010 7:53 am

Last thing I tried that didn’t go down so well was an egg in my oats it was to strong a flavor for me didn’t like it one bit!

I started my blog after coming across a few foodie blogs which made me realize I would love to do something similar and I’m so glad I did I have learnt so many wonderful things from following blogs and writing my own. The name just came to me one day because I love living a healthy life but I also love get glitzed up for a night out!

Love ya new shoes I can never find black trainers, I’m going to London this weekend on the hunt for some!

  33. March 31, 2010 7:59 am

I really enjoyed reading this post, girl! Your quirkiness shined through, which always makes for good reading ;)
You know I actually can’t eat cottage cheese savory! Only sweet! But I grew up eating cottage cheese and pears all the time, so maybe it stemmed from that.
Your new kicks are awesome! Love the color:)

    1. I started a blog because I wrote and wrote and wrote all through college. Then college stopped, I didn’t do anything with my major (journalism) but the passion to write still lived. I also just started running and wanted to write about that journey. Plus I’m a sucker for good eats and love baking. Enter: Running Around Normal! I live in a town called Normal, so it just fit. :)
2.Tomatoes alone. I love them in guac, salad, pasta, etc. but HATE them alone. I gave em another try the other day, but alas, hated them.

I think the biggest problem with that yogurt/ cottage cheese concoction is that you stirred everything in. So many yogurts, oats, and cottage cheese bowls can be ruined when you stir it in. Its like Peanut butter. pb is always better eaten on top with each bite. that also pertains to jam. i think mixing all those flavors just mixed too much and ruined the flavor. just a thought…

  35. March 31, 2010 8:01 am

I CANNOT get down with cottage cheese. I can eat it in protein pancakes b/c I can’t taste it but that’s about it. I tried making a dip out of it with the packaged ranch dressing and I could only have a few bites.

I started my blog to have a place to be able to talk about beauty stuff, fitness, and food, basically my interests…hence the name BeautyandtheBeef.

I love sweet cottage cheese! It’s good for overnight oats and nighttime snacks mixed with any combo of pp/cocoa powder/pb/stevia. Ironically my recent food disaster was when I tried to warm it up last night.. it got too hot and was disgusting. I also tried brussel sprouts and was not wowed, I will try those again though.

I don’t have a blog because it’s too much time and I spend enough time planning my workouts, meals, and calculating/measuring/recording everything, it’s obsession enough – the blog would put me into disorder territory I think. Plus who would read it? And if I ever somehow become well-known for some crazy reason, I don’t need all my musings & photos to come back and bite me in the ass. Or more likely, when I go for my next job and they google me.

  38. March 31, 2010 8:28 am

Yah! What’s wrong with girlie colors on shoes :-)!? Yours are really stylish. Love the bangs. The food looks amaze. Glad to hear that you might eat 2500 cals on your day off. Makes me feel more normal. Bummer about the cottage cheese- I avoid it b/c it seems really really calorie dense. I’d rather have greek yogurt for less cals and more creamy goodness. I do love anything sweet though, so I’m sure I would have nom nommed all over your bowl.

    1. I started blogging (with Heab’s encouragement) to share some of my tips on how I lost the weight and to share ideas for smoothies and other recipes for food.

    2. Last thing that had to go down the sink was a green smoothie that just wasn’t gonna do it for me.

    Love you!!!!

I started my blog (last Friday WOOT) b/c I have ALWAYS loved cooking and sharing my recipes. Well… actually I would make things, or tell people about things I made and they’d ask me to email them the recipe. Pretty soon I was emailing like 15 people and about a year and few months ago discovered food blogs through a friend. I read.. and read… and read them and thought, I can’t do this b/c I don’t have a cute/ funny/ cool name. I decided that I shouldn’t let that stop me (last friday HEHE) and started What’s Cookin’ with Mary (kinda lame.. I know). So far, I’m pretty sure my family and friends are the only one’s that have looked at it, but maybe someday I’ll have ‘a following’ or at least a few people who leave comments! Maybe you could take a look at it and tell me what you think of it… I’m tough, I can take it ;) http://www.whatscookinwithmary.blogspot.com

The last thing I tried and hated was sweet oatmeal… I know, I know… I think I’m the only one in the wold who doesn’t like it! I posted about that just this morning actually… ;P http://whatscookinwithmary.blogspot.com/2010/03/savory-oats-for-two.html I’m also pretty sure there’s no way in hell I could eat sweet cottage cheese. I’m not even brave enough to try it… Something about curds and sweet *shutters*

Sorry for the novel I just wrote HAHA!

I read them for about two months and then had to start one of my own. I was obsessed! I picked the name because I was going through a rough time and wanted to use the blog and a creative and positive outlet.

Oh and I love that I found this blogging community – even though I’m just a reader – it makes me feel so much better to know there are other people out there doing what I’m doing. Changing my lifestyle and losing 70 lbs in the past year has had a weird affect on a lot of people in my life, they started out supportive but when I stuck with it and actually changed, they’re not supportive anymore. Now I’m weird/crazy/ridiculous/someone-to-be-mocked for working out and eating super healthy.

When no one else in your day-to-day life lives the way you do, it’s comforting to know there are others out there :)

  43. March 31, 2010 9:06 am

Oh..that cottage cheese combo looks amazing! Haha! Loved the step-by-step- I was hoping you would love it. No worries- I can eat enough sweet and savoury for us both. You eat PBJ though- that doesn’t come under sweet/salty?

I started blogging with NO intention of ever becoming a food blogger. I used livejournal when I was younger (18/19) then just started a blogspot blog as a journal type thing. I didn’t post regularly and have kept the same blog, it’s just become a much bigger hobby- like you, I NEVER thought about the blogging community when I started and that has been the biggest part of why i continue. I heart blogosphere :D

Last thing I made that I hated- haha, protein cake. I used whey powder and was out of applesauce so tried it with a splash of milk. Yeah, my whey powder doesn’t make good cakes. Fat free whipped cream, peanut butter and jelly attempted to save it. Barely managed.

Hey Janetha! I’m actually in the sweet cottage cheese camp – I think my favorite is cottage cheese with pineapple. :) Hehe.

Anywho, I started my blog after stumbling on Eat Like Me at Self Magazine’s online site. I just was so inspired and thought that it would help me come up with cool recipes. It totally has! I’ve also met some great people, which is awesome.

  47. March 31, 2010 9:24 am

Soooo funny…I can only eat sweet cottage cheese, if at all. It’s just a tough food for me.

I started blogging in the fall after reading you and HEABs for months. I came up with the name after mowing through a bag of ___________ (I can’t remember: probably tortilla chips or Pirate Booty). My husband built my site or else I would NEVER have been able to do it.

Now my goal is to make more real life blog friends…I’ve met 4 so far! And one I already knew. I’d LOVE to go to FitBlogger next year and be at goal weight!

  48. March 31, 2010 9:27 am

I am sorry you were disappointed by the sweet cottage cheese mix! It looks like something I would LOVE especially if I could get the darn protein cake right. Haha. Mine was one of the floppers! I can eat cottage cheese ANY way though. Sweet, savory, spicy, whatev. It’s one of my favorites!

  49. March 31, 2010 9:51 am

Sweet cottage cheese is terrible. Just awful, glad you agree.

I’ve always referred to myself as a grazer so I just took that label and ran with it for the name of my blog. I discovered food blogs through recipe searches. It’s totally a hidden treasure! Plus I like the accountability that it gave me since I was planning a wedding…

  51. March 31, 2010 10:53 am

i don’t do sweet cottage cheese either. word.

I started my blog after being inspired by the first blogs I started reading: Oh She Glows, The Fitnessista, Inner workings of a College Grad, and Healthy Tipping Point. I started blogging after losing 30 lbs and reading blogs for over a year! The name of my blog is a Seinfeld reference- my favorite show!

And…the last thing I ate that I hated was this morning. It was a stupid impulse buy at the grocery store- a coffee cake snack cake. It was gross.

  53. March 31, 2010 11:05 am

yahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! I’m 5’1″ too. Tiny girls rock :) Oh and I’m 27. Yuppers. And..>I don’t like cottage cheese. Ok, I’m done sharing random things we have in common. Great eats. I still haven’t tried those protein muffins yet! I know! And I think designer or organic protein is totally worth the $$. Great pasta dish- last night was totally a pasta kinda night :)

  54. March 31, 2010 11:08 am

I started my blog because I was a blog reader for so long I figured I might as well join in on the fun. Plus I wanted a space that I could use as a creative outlet and practice my writing and social media skills.

Last thing I hated…I don’t know…over the weekend I went to a Passover Seder and someone brought in an experimental potato dish that was a giant fail…vanilla yogurt does not belong in a savory casserole, we learned the hard way :-)

  55. March 31, 2010 11:39 am

Cottage cheese makes me want to vom so no worries!

So, miss J. I believe you could easily come up with a local flavo(u)r photo. Doesn’t have to be SLC or even Utah-specific…it could be from any trip you went on anywhere…say, a photo of something you ate in CA or Seattle that you feel really sums up the local “flavour” there. So, there you have it. I am making you do homework! Haha.

    Anyway, how about YOUR questions?!
1)I started my blog because I was reading so many others and I wanted to add my two cents to the pot and share my little food adventures! The name relates to a saying at home, “I’m so hungry, I could eat for england!” i.e. if it were an olympic event. Got said a lot in my household…haha.

I hated mustard for years. Refused to eat it on burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches…you name it. Now I can’t live without it. It’s sooo good and low in calories. What’s not to love? (I love honey mustard the most!)

I have only had cottage cheese plain. Never tried it sweet or savory so I’m not sure which one I would prefer.

I’m an overpronator too. I just saw the dr today for some heel & knee issues. Thank God I recently purchased some good shoes. I’m really digging yours though. I like that they are black. Mine are white, gray and baby blue and kind of dorktastic.. when i get money I might copy you! I have Brooks Ariels (A motion control shoe) right now.

    1. I kind of hate our blog name but we call each other boo and it worked. I can’t imagine being anything other than Two Boos Who Eat. Andy thought of the idea to make a blog but he rarely posts. I LOVE your hair, how cute are you? I decided to start a blog because I decided to work for my family’s company doing the Accounting. Accounting is not my thing, i’m a creative girl and I love to write and crack jokes. SO when I stumbled across the wonderful world of food blogging I figured I would be a perfect fit. Why? Because I love writing/talking (I feel like i’m talking to readers) and I LOVE food!! The last thing I tried and hated? GINGER CHEWS, gross!!!

  65. March 31, 2010 3:59 pm

I hated mustard until my 20s too…now I LOVE it and can’t imagine life without. Weird how that happens, no?

    1. My blog: a friend sent me a link to Super Caloric Chalk Dust (now called “Eatventures”) thinking I would like it because it was about food and teaching. How right she was…I like you HAD NO IDEA the food blog world was so vast, and I spent a week reading every single food blog I could click on before deciding to start my own. The rest is one big love story. As for the name…when I was growing up, cake was always a logical choice for breakfast. When I went to college, I shared this breakfast phenomenon with my roommates, and we always used to say “Yes, I want cake for breakfast!”, which later was shortened to “Yes, I want cake”

    2. I don’t think I could compromise the integrity of cake because of my love for it’s sugary, fat wonderfulness, so I know I wouldn’t like protein cake. The last thing I tried and disliked coffee this morning with half and half in it…yuck!! I usually drink my coffee black, but on a whim added the H&H this morning, and HATED it. Never again, lesson learned.

  66. March 31, 2010 4:29 pm

The last thing I tried and hated but really wanted to like it, was a Raw food bar, that left a really bitter aftertaste just after one bite.

  71. March 31, 2010 7:43 pm

Bummer about the cottage cheese, it looked and sounded like it had so much potential :(

I had a fail in the past few wks….but now I can’t remember. Getting old sucks.

I’ve enjoyed reading everyone’s responses of why they started blogging. I was a lurker for awhile and One Fit Foodie’s was the first I stumbled upon and I got so many great ideas for recipes, workouts, etc. from the blogs. And I absolutely loved the positivity everyone shared and the encouragement as well.

For me, it’s more about accountability to myself. I love to work out, cook, try new creations but also just need to vent sometimes about my life. I have too many co-workers, fam members and sensitive friends on facebook where I cant do that so I decided to start my own. It may not be all health all the time but it’s mine :)

Yes, mine hated recipe is protein cake! I think I must have done something wrong because you make it sound so good! But maybe our tastes are different because I like sweet cottage cheese.

I had a marathon training blog back in 06-07. I sometimes talked about food but mostly read other running blogs. Back then I was active on a fitness (sorta) message board and someone talked about katheats. I read that and just started reading different ones.

    Hey,
I do have a blog since approx. 5 minutes. And I have it becasue you asked your questions and my answer would have been I don’t so I could mentally hear you asking: “Why don’t you?” And so I asked myself: Why don’t I? And since I didn’t have a good reason for that I figured I’d start one.
I’ve been really inspired by your blog and love to read about what other ppl eat all day.
And I’m certain that it will help me keep on track (I’m doing WW)and help me lose my last couple of lbs.
So thanks for inspiring me and I hope that you’ll come and check out my blog some time!
    Stef

I am so with you on the sweet cottage cheese. The only way I can do it sweet is to get NO SALT added cottage cheese. I have a hard time finding it though :) I know deans makes it and it comes in a hot pick tub (just so you know when you are looking.

I started my blog as a way to keep myself accountable in recovery from my eating disorder. I love the feedback that comes from blogging and I feel like I can be real and put my feelings and thoughts out into the world.

    Hey lady….

    1. I started my blog to document and track my struggles and accomplishments with getting healthy again. At first it was not as FOOD and FITNESS obsessed as it is now. Slowly but surely I came across bloggy brilliant ladies and realized there was a whole world of healthy foodie fanatics out there. I fell in love with the concept, the recipes, the moves and the ladies and the rest is History!

    2. I recently tried making banana soft serve with both the gums AND protein powder. It turned into an overly fluffy, chalky (sandy) marshmallow (in a bad way) mess. YUK! I love it plain and will never mess with its creamy perfection again!

haha, I totally laughed out loud at your comment you left on my blog about sweet cottage cheese :p The last thing I tried and hated was probably some sort of green veggie. I’ve been trying a lot of the things I’ve hated since childhood, some I now love (squash), some I toss right out (asparagus, bleh)!

bleh i don’t like cottage cheese that much! sometimes about it…is just not cool with me!

    1. why did i make a blog. because i had been reading blogs, and some dude i commented on was like why not start a blog? me: hmmm. it’s summer. and i’m not doing much. WHY NOT! but lately sometimes i feel like i should just shut it down. not many people read it. i do like to use it as help to remember wtf happened on certain days, and post hilarious things that i find. not much on recipes…but working on that.

    2. what have i tried lately and hated? hmm. a while ago i had white choclate wonderful but DID NOT LIKE IT. i know. sorry. what else….duncan hines yellow cake. ew. too sweet. nasty.

Janetha, I absolutely adore your blog. It always makes me smile :) Haha, and I can totally relate to the getting distracted while blogging issue – it sometimes takes me over an hour to finish a post too.
