January 3, 2010

ah! the lovely ellie pointed out on facebook that today’s date is a palindrome!  i am obsessed with palindromes so naturally this had to be the title for today :)

IMG_4752

i was so excited writing the date on my check when i was at costco!

thanks for the props on my new layout. it is just temporary until my clever web designing friend tyler can fix me up with something fab.

well, yesterday was the least productive day of the year and today was totally the opposite!  i have been in productivity mode all day long and i got so much done.

OH. so in my last post i totally spaced mentioning my upper body workout from thursday!  not sure how that happened, but i did a stellar routine and i am suffering from mayjah DOMS in the triceps today.  as my mom would say… my “flappers” are sore!

before i get into all the items of business i have lined up.. let me tell you about today’s meals & moves!

image

i started the day with something i have not had in ages~ parfait a la k!

IMG_4742

i used 0% oikos and TJ’s fiber cereal for the layers.  the topping was what made this parfait extra special…

IMG_4745

that is homemade maple pecan butter from susan!  she sent it to me awhile back and i don’t think i ever mentioned it~ shame on me.  the pecan butter tastes INCREDIBLE.. but since i have geographic tongue, it is a love/hate relationship for me.  while the taste is amazing, the after-effects are harsh.  pecans never play nice with my tongue :(

after charging up with this breakfast and some french pressed coffee i got to work on my productive day!  i did all of my laundry (even folded it!), did all the dishes, cleaned the kitchen, unpacked the last of the boxes in my room, washed allll my sheets (since grinch barfed on my bed!), put my bed back together, cleaned the living room, cleaned and organized my bathroom.. whew.. that worked up an appetite!

scrambled egg pita~

IMG_4749

i used 1 whole egg+2 egg whites, scrambled them and then put them inside a toasted pita pocket along with a laughing cow wedge and some TJ’s peach salsa.

IMG_4747

delicious.

after eating this i tried organizing some more but felt cabin fever creeping in.  i decided i should probably leave the house so off to the gym i went for a lower body workout!

image

started out with a little HIIT~

minutes speed incline
0-1 5.0 0
1-2 5.5 0
2-3 6.0 0
3-4 6.5 0
4-5 7.0 0
5-6 5.0 2.5
6-7 5.5 2.5
7-8 6.0 2.5
8-9 6.5 2.5
9-10 7.0 2.5
10-11 5.0 5
11-12 5.5 5
12-13 6.0 5
13-14 6.5 5
14-15 7.0 5

total time: 15 minutes, total distance: 1.5 miles

i decided to get creative with my workout today.  i know i wanted to work my quads, hamstrings, calves and glutes.  i designed three cycles to complete, each cycle included an exercise to hit each of these four categories.

i did each cycle three times through and then moved onto the next.

cycle one:

exercise weight reps
single leg press 80 lbs 12 each leg
standing calf raise 60 lbs 12
leg curl machine 65 lbs 12
glute kickback machine 40 lbs 12 each leg

cycle two:

exercise weight reps
barbell squat 50 lbs 12
barbell deadlift 50 lbs 12
single leg calf raises on laying leg press 120 lbs 12 each leg
bridge w/ feet on bench 15 lbs on hips 12

cycle three:

exercise weight reps
ball-against-wall squat 20 lbs 12
stability ball ham curls body weight 12
lunge w/ leg lift 20 lbs 12
single leg calf raises w/ dumbbell 15 lbs 12 each leg

i finished off with the stairmill:

(facing forward)

minutes speed
0-1 6
1-2 7
2-3 8
3-4 9
4-5 10
5-6 11
6-7 12
7-8 13
8-9 14
9-10 15

holy balls. i was dying when it was at 15.  so proud that i powered through!  i ended up gong 1.04 miles.

before the gym i made a few stops: costco, whole foods & the regular market.  i had a lot of shopping to do in preparation for my 4 week plan.

wanna see what i got?

fresh produce:

IMG_4755

spring mix, baby spinach, strawberries, blueberries, bananas, avocados, cucumbers, red onion, snap peas, bell peppers, broccoli florets, mushroom medley and pears.

protein:

IMG_4761

eggs, chicken meatballs, low fat string cheese, 0% greek yogurt, oven roasted turkey breast and low fat cottage cheese.

dear costco,

i eat a whole bunch of 0% oikos and it is real expensive to buy at whole foods.  please start carrying it. right now. thanks.

love, janetha b.

IMG_4766

boneless skinless chicken breasts, ground turkey and a salmon filet.

carbs:

IMG_4757

flat out multi grain wraps, whole wheat english muffins, garbanzos and high fiber tortillas.

packaged goods:

IMG_4756

four bags of steamfresh veggies, canned diced tomatoes, almond milk, broccoli soup, mushroom soup, vegetable broth and chai tea concentrate.

other stuff:

IMG_4758

vegetable dip mix (i used this for my meatloaf), ziplocks, hidden valley ranch seasoning, pumpkin, laughing cow, olive oil cooking spray, honey mustard salad dressing and CLA supplements.

bars:

IMG_4759

i don’t like to eat bars but i like to keep them in my car in case of emergency :)

oh! check out what i got from costco to make sure i keep my resolution to floss daily:

IMG_4753

and of course.. coffee beansss!

IMG_4767

WOW.  i should be set for the whole month as far as groceries go!  at least i hope…

image

i used some of my new purchases for dinner.

spruced up mushroom soup & english muffin + sunbutter

IMG_4780

to make the soup, i used these two new purchases:

IMG_4769

i sautéed the mushrooms along with red onion and then added the two to the soup.

IMG_4771

it made the regular old soup quite gourmet!

IMG_4781

afterward, i was craving a sweet something.  i decided on a handful of blueberries which made the perfect ending to my meal.

time to reflect back on my december goals!

i will give each goal a star rating with one star being bad and five stars being the best!

  • eat less.
  • image

i did really well at avoiding the BLT’s up until christmas hit and then i was a bit of a cheater.  that was predictable!

  • move more.
  • image

same as the eat less.. i did really well at moving more and getting extra workouts in up until christmas and then i got a tad lazy!

  • drink a gallon of water a day.
  • image

only was successful with my water consumption about half of the time. woops!

  • remember to take vitamins & supplements.
  • image

hopefully i will be better at this one in january!

    • finish unpacking/stay tidy.

    image

things are tidy but i still have some unpacking to do.

  • print out photos and hang them in my room/office.
  • no stars!

  • eat out less.
  • image
    raging success on this one.

  • add one meal and one move to their respective pages on the blog each week.
  • image

started the month out strong but then tapered off.. i have photos of meals & moves but need to actually post them. soon.

  • try new workouts.
  • image

yes! i love all the new moves and routines i have tried.

  • make more of an effort to keep in touch.
  • image

check! i have had lots of socializing with both family and friends. love it!

there you have it.  december turned out to be pretty good, eh? how did you do on your december goals?

I wish I could buy all my fresh vegggies in bulk rather than having to go to the store every 2-3 days to restock and replenish!

Glide floss is the best. Nice job.

The geographic tongue…I suspect somewhere a food allergy or sensitvity. Think about what foods give you a tummy ache and is there any correlation with the tongue situation? Just pondering out loud and trying to help you find relief!

B/c the pecan maple butter from Susan looks tooooo good not to fully enjoy 110%!

    2. January 3, 2010 12:48 am

Oh I’m squealing with delight on behalf of my twin, Protein girl. Yay Allie!

Good for you Janetha B re. the flossing. As a dentist you know that this makes me very happy.

Oh I forgot that I nicknamed your challenge in a comment a few days ago. I have a nicknaming habit- I do it to people too! Hee hee!

      Bulk: greek yogurt- yes.

Wow your groceries look like mine. Same stuff I swear!

Are you still gonna be with BlogSpot? I would nickname it BarfSpot but it’s not very funny. It just conveys my sentiments.

      Have a wonderful sunday!

    3. January 3, 2010 1:02 am

I am so impressed of that HIIT workout girl. 5% incline? I just BARELY made it through the last one you posted and I think the highest incline was at 2.5%. I HATE running hills more than anything!!! You inspire me to push harder though.

Hmmm, the last thing I bought was coincidently at a bulk food store and stocked up on the essentials such as vita water, cereal, paper towels and toilet paper. The good stuff!

Next question: I wish they would make a bulk store version of Trader Joes. This would be a fantastic idea!

    4. January 3, 2010 1:33 am

COSTCO! lOOOOVE! i am planning a costco trip very soon.

love your groceries shopping!!! I haven’t done any in almost a month!! wooo!! that’s a record, isn’t it?
      last thing I bought? milk
what I want to buy in bulk? frozen corns!!! I’m having 2 big ones everyday!! I’m becoming a CORN!!! :D

    6. January 3, 2010 3:54 am

      Parfait looks good! Yum!

    7. January 3, 2010 4:36 am

Awww, that’s a shame about the pecan butter! As I get experimenting with more combos, I’ll be sure to send you another that’s more tongue-friendly ;)

I love how you’re writing out your workouts now. Can I steal the graph idea from you? I just started recording all my crap in an excel spreadsheet an it would be so much easier to “print screen” and drag it into my post. I’m also mega impressed by your 15 on the stepmill. Especially at the end of that intense workout!

      1. Hmm, I believe the very last item I picked up yesterday was an Oxygen magazine at the cash. But if we’re talking food, it was cheese strings :)

      2. Wasa bread and egg whites!

    8. January 3, 2010 6:32 am

Love how you rated your goals – so cute!! I just went to TJs and Whole Foods last night, too! We bought a ton, but I did get an avocado and I’m hoping it’s a good one since they suck around here at this time!!! :)

    9. January 3, 2010 6:47 am

Happy New Year Janetha B!! That waffle house from your last post sounds so interesting! Did you see the mexican style one with chicken and salsa? Yum! What are the stats on those chicken meatballs? I am intrigued! And now I am craving snap peas from your produce pics! I am emailing you about getting together this week. Love you girl! xoxo

    10. January 3, 2010 6:48 am

We went to Costco yesterday, and I was excited to finally find the individual serving sized Sabra hummus packs. I have seen them everywhere and really wanted to buy them. (The teenager has an annoying habit to “leave stuff behind” in bigger hummus containers – very annoying). Anyway, my Costco didn’t carry them, but yesterday they had them, so I was very excited! We also got a bunch of produce, very similar to what you got…

Happy Sunday, Janetha! Oh, and I’m really looking forward to your jamaican-me-bikini-ready challenge!!! :)

    11. January 3, 2010 6:48 am

Best post title ever! Next one is November 2nd 2011…see you there! :D I think you did great on your goals! RE vitamins: I buy kids ones because they taste like candy so never forget them. I keep them by my kettle in the kitchen so when I wake up, pop them ASAP. Nice way to start the day!

      1. what is the last thing you bought at the grocery store? SPINACH! No stors have fresh deliveries here so it’s slim pickings until Tuesday when the holiday is over so will be stocking up then.

      2. what is something you wish you could buy in bulk? gum, greek yogurt and cans of pumpkin

Hahha I loved that today was a palindrome too!! The last thing I bought was Oikos greek yogurt (ironically!). I actually bought mine at a super Wal-Mart we have here… they carry Oikos (the huge container) for $4.50 which is much better than normal grocery stores!

Something I wish I could buy in bulk.. greek yogurt! Definitely agree with you on that one

      Killer workout!

      1) I did my usual weekly grocery haul yesterday. I did pick up one new-to-me item at TJ’s though – cranberry apple butter! Mmmmm!

      2) I wish I could get those La Tortilla Factory tortillas in bulk! I always grocery shop on Saturdays and 9 times out of 10, the grocery store is out of them on Saturdays! Ugh.

    14. January 3, 2010 7:12 am

      Your workouts are so awesome!

Nice grocery haul! And Susan’s homemade nut butter sounds AMAZING!

I’m with ya on the bulk yogurt. I go to BJ’s and they sell Chobani in bulk, so I’m golden. However, I recently noticed that Chobani is often on sale in the supermarket and it works out to be the same as BJ’s (or even less sometimes!) I hardly ever see Oikos on sale, though:(

    15. January 3, 2010 7:26 am

Wow, level 15 on the starimill! I think I would fall off. I have only done up to level 7 or so and even that was super challenging!

That dental floss is my favorite. It feels much better than other brands. Yep, of all things I’m commenting on your choice of dental floss.

    16. January 3, 2010 8:09 am

janetha bean…loving up on your grocery loot, that egg pita thang, yo coffee, some major productivity (i am hoping the same for myself today) and everythang!

      LOVE YOUUUUUUUUU

    17. January 3, 2010 8:23 am

Yummy parfait! And scrambled egg pita…might have to crank out something like that for lunch! You’ve evoked a craving! I might also take a cue from you and start flossing…incidentally, I’m going to the dentist tomorrow to fill my first cavity EVER. :-( All that Diet Coke has caught up to me, I spose…

    18. January 3, 2010 8:39 am

Wow! All the groceries look great- hope they will last you through the month!!
      Jenna

    19. January 3, 2010 9:01 am

They have greek yogurt at BJS!!!!!!! its not oikos, its chobani but STILL its humungus and it was only 4.99!! seriously scope it out! but one thing I could buy in bulk that I have lots of is the josephs lavash pitas OR stoneground mustard!

love all your meals, the scrambled egg pita with the PEACH salsa sounds sooo good!!!
jealous of the homemade pecan butter just chillin on the top of your parfat, ahh I tried to make nut butter once but it didnt come out good at all!

recently at the grocery store I bought eggwhites in the carton and some honeycrisp apples!

    20. January 3, 2010 9:54 am

We just made a costco run yesterday and bought a ton of stuff, chicken, eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese, bread. The highlight of the trip was the magic bullet. Made fresh strawberry sorbet last night. Yum! I was going to tell you the same thing Naomi did about BJ’s and Chobani. The best deal I have seen on the greek yogurt front. You bought a lot of fresh produce considering you buy for one person does it last? I am always afraid it is going to go bad before I can use it all.

    21. January 3, 2010 9:55 am

      1. I seriously haven’t been grocery in SO. LONG. The plan is to go today but I am feeling very UN-productive at the moment. Boo.

      2. Bulk…gotta agree with you on the greek yogurt. That stuff ain’t cheap.

and 3. I don’t know about the whole Google Reader issue. I would say maybe delete me and then re-add me to your subscriptions?

i’m pretty sure we should go food shopping together. we would be stuuuraight ballaz at the food store. one of my rules for 2010 is to barely buy anything at whole foods unless it’s free or comes from the hotbar haha. they’re SO espensive!

glad you had such a fun new years :) i just read your new years post too! i’m feelin that necktie look for you. love it.

    23. January 3, 2010 10:16 am

damnnnnnnn stan … is there anything left in the grocery store? you did WORK.

oh god oikos in bulk would be such a miracle.. and I spy flatouts. So jeal! I can’t find those suckers anywhere.

woo woo for being such a goal-achiever. I def. have to work on drinking more agua myself. I just don’t crave it since it’s so colddd. Does coffee count? I mean, you use water to make it.. so it’s basically the same thing, right?! ;)

      LOVE YOU xo

    24. January 3, 2010 10:31 am

We have to go to the store today – thanks for the motivation!

Chris was all about the palindrome date yesterday. Just so you know, there will be 35 more this millenium!

Love you little star ratings – adorable!

Have a great time snowboarding! I’m doing a lake walk and maybe an on-demand. I’m super sore from this wee workout I did yesterday which is pretty funny.

      HNY!!!

    25. January 3, 2010 10:34 am

Love the grocery shop post, I need to do another one of those soon. Can’t wait to see what you do with the salmon, I love salmon.

      1) Last thing I bought at a grocery store? A $50 gift card for my parents’ belated Christmas package and a bottle of water…boring.

      2) I wish I could find my shampoo and conditioner in bulk, would save me $ and extra trips to the regular grocery stores. (I prefer to go to health food store for food but need to make extra stops at chain store for toiletries…)

    26. January 3, 2010 10:54 am

all of your groceries look fabulous :)
I am so in love with those la tortilla wraps – they never break, which is the best!! I wish those english muffins had no splenda because they were my favorite!!

    29. January 3, 2010 11:21 am

All of the fresh produce looks so good. Nothing like the freshest of produce!

    30. January 3, 2010 12:17 pm

      Janetha,
Oh my gosh, we could totally do all our grocery shopping together! Your spread looks like mine after I get home – salmon, chicken, La Tortilla Factory, etc. So wish I could do the Greek yogurt!!! Miss it. My Costco carries the Fage 0% and flavored Chobanis, but not the Oikos.

Your workout sounds intense as always. I would die at level 15, and I LOVE that dental floss. I have them everywhere as I am a flossing freak. They’re in my bathroom, car, purse, kitchen. So handy.

My phone number is a palindrome. Are you jealous? ;)

    31. January 3, 2010 12:33 pm

YAY for a parfait – I haven’t had one in a long time, that should change! Love the new look! It’s very sleek.

Your grocery haul looks faaaaaaantastic! Especially the carb picture ;)

I wish I could buy red bell peppers (that never go bad) in bulk. It would make my life so much easier!

    32. January 3, 2010 12:52 pm

I love that I am not the only one excited about yesterday’s date!

I need to copy some of your workouts. I love that you post them! I might have to print this out and put it on the treadmill next to me! (Is that creep of me?)

I’m excited to see your 4-week plan! You are going to rock it!

And I’m with you, I wish I could buy Oikos in bulk!!! C’mon Costco get with it!

I wish I had a Costco here instead of a Sam’s…Sam’s doesn’t cater to the healthy foodie…but boy if I wanted some sort of fried frozen appetizer!

The last thing I bought at the store was yogurt and baking supplies for my new years eve cookies.

    34. January 3, 2010 2:52 pm

The last thing I bought was a red pepper to put in my omelet for dinner, and the thing I wish I could get is almond butter! You can only get it in tiny tiny jars here and my processor just isn’t up to the job :(

    35. January 3, 2010 2:53 pm

Holy produce! Where do you even put it all? I think my fridge would break if I tried to shove that much into it. Sigh! I adore Costco though. I think I literally started giggling with glee when I discovered the cold produce section in our Costco for the first time. It was a special moment.

I so rarely eat bars but I ALWAYS have them on hand anyway. And I always look at them nearly first when I go food shopping! And yet still rarely eat them. There’s just something about them that pulls me in… haha.

Congrats on the goal success girl, SO proud of you. I need to do that goal setting business more often. It definitely works! I’m excited to hear all about this Jamaican challenge too!

    36. January 3, 2010 4:17 pm

I’m the same way with the bars, don’t eat many but must keep on hand just in case – with one exception – Clif chocolate brownie bar – I could buy those by the box to satisfy my sweet tooth for breakfast every other day.

The last thing I bought was groceries, too – we went on vacay last week and cleared out as much of our pantry and fridge as possible.

I wish I could buy fresh produce in bulk AND have it LAST so I don’t have to restock the veggie shelf every couple days.

My goals this month are to eat less and move more, too.

    37. January 3, 2010 4:54 pm

SO jealous of all of your produce! In desperate need over here. And I WISH I had a Costco!

Congrats on your December goals…and on the vitamin one-I’ve been taking a daily multi for the past several months, and I take it first thing in the morning with breakfast, which helps me remember!

      1. Hmm I seem to remember making a quick run last week for some essentials: bread, turkey, apples, pears, and lettuce ahah sad.

      2. Oikos for sure! And produce that doesn’t go bad.

    38. January 3, 2010 5:20 pm

I get that same cheese, that same salmon, that same ground turkey, and same laughing cow from Costco!

That’s funny that your mom calls triceps flappers.. my sister calls them bat wings!

And a bikini challenge?? I’m in!!

Whooo Janetha you are definitely going to be bikini ready if you follow this plan!! It seems strict but I’m sure the results will be incredible. Is it BFL style workouts? I’m guessing the nutrition program isn’t BFL because of the carb restrictions. Does no cereal = no oats? YIKES! I know you can do this though.

Good for you for giving up soda! I don’t drink it often but I do have the occasional diet coke. I generally only bring water to the theatre but If I’m feeling “naughty” I’ll sneak in a diet coke. :)

      Good luck on your plan!

P.S. – You SO should do a FAQs page!!!!

I definitely want to get a membership to a bulk store here in OK. They have bulk Chobani, which I would love in my life. Love your grocery haul!

I love palindromes! Sad that I missed that.
