better late than never.

November 30, 2009

hello!  how did everybody’s monday pan out??  mine was busy but productive~so it went by fast.  that is always a plus!

i am going to get right into the daily deets because i have a little something to tack on to the end of this post (the title is a hint!)

image

meal 1: egg whites+peppers+mushrooms+onions+tomatoes & 1 slice of dry wheat toast & coffee

IMG_8475IMG_8477 IMG_8478

i had to take an emergency trip to the dentist because my temporary crown fell off last night! i was eating the risotto my roomie made me and all of a sudden chomped down on a chunk.. i thought it was something in the food, but nope! it was my temporary crown! lame.

i was really busy all day—oh and the power went out for awhile! we used the time to put up the christmas tree in the show room.  time to get into the christmas spirit :)

eventually i found time to eat something.. i think i went nearly five hours between meals. not cool.

meal 2: garbz+cottage cheese

IMG_8482

eaten at my mess of a desk! unfortunately i had NO ranch seasoning at work.. tragic, i know.

IMG_8479 IMG_8480

and then i ended up working a 10 hour day. it happens.

after work i broke into a package that was waiting for me at home!

IMG_8483

the fantastic folks at oh! nuts sent me some of their nuts & dried fruit to review.

IMG_8484

dried pears, sun dried tomatoes & pine nuts!

i immediately broke into the pears~

IMG_8486

IMG_8488IMG_8489

i expected these to taste like all the other dried fruit i have tried~boy was i wrong!!

IMG_8487

these were SO moist and juicy!! (TWSS)  seriously, this was the best piece of dried fruit i have ever tasted in my life.

the sun dried tomatoes & pine nuts will be saved for an upcoming recipe that i will make and incorporate them.  the pears, however, may not last very long ;)

thanks oh! nuts!! i am extremely stoked on your products!!

moves_thumb

at 6:30 i went to a spin class! since that is not something i can really tell you all about, you can go ahead and check out my new additions to my moves page!

abs.

full body weight training.

go ahead and peruse those if you feel so inclined.  the spin class was killer! and i spent another 10 minutes afterward whittling my middle.

image

i was really hungry after my intense workout but i managed to wait about an hour after my spin class to eat dinner.  i like to fast for one hour after cardio for optimal fat burn.

meal 3: balsamic glazed chicken + sweet potato rounds + veggies

IMG_8504

for the chicken, i used trader joe’s 21 seasoning salute and some balsamic vinegar and cooked it in a pan on the stove.

IMG_8497IMG_8500 IMG_8501

the potatoes were sliced thin and coated in EVOO+thyme and baked at 425 degrees [f] for about 20 minutes.

 IMG_8499

halfway into the baking process i flipped the rounds and sprinkled them with cinnamon & salt~

IMG_8502

the veggies were easy, i used a bag of steamfresh broccoli medley.. but riddle me this, why do they make the carrots in the medley round?

IMG_8510

carrot balls.

and what the crap do they do with the remainder of the carrot? i mean, they don’t come round. i hope the rest of the carrot found a good home.

good, healthy dinner!

IMG_8505 IMG_8506 IMG_8507

afterward i was craving something sweet.. which never really happens. i decided to give in to my craving and had a single black & white milano cookie~

IMG_8512

one cookie clocked in at only 60 calories & 7g carbs so i figure it was the perfect thing to satisfy my sweet tooth! i mean, it was no vanilla bean ice cream, but it did the trick ;)

now i am hanging out with the dogs & my roomie and typing this! look how much yulek loves randy!!

IMG_8515

****************************************************************

now.. about that title

so last friday i found myself posting from my new baby computer and i had no photos loaded on there that i could use for flashback friday.. and then by the time i posted again i had waaaay too much to talk about and flashing back just was not an option.  BUT when i saw naomi’s memory monday post today, i decided i could do a super late edition of flashback friday in honor of her weekly memory monday posts :)

SO.. what i had planned for last week’s flashback friday was, of course, thanksgiving!  let’s talk about it.

last year~2008 i spent thanksgiving at my parents’ house, which is how it goes every year.. surprise, surprise.  i was not yet a food blogger but that did not mean that i didn’t blog about the food!  you can check out my thanksgiving 2008 post here (on my other blog).  here are a few of the highlights~

hummus & veggies

image

bread & tapenade

image

CHEESEBALL (i die)

image

and of course~the glorious spread thanks to my fabulous mom.

imageimage

we spent our post-dinner digestion time playing dominoes together.  look how tiny penelope was!

image

image

image

the year before~2007~ was also spent at my parents’ place.  my mom roasted a HUGE bird~i think it is bigger than randy the dog!!

image

this was mine + marshall’s first thanksgiving together.

image

after dinner we all went to the bowling alley!  it was a really fun way to work off that big meal.  i though we might make a tradition of it but nope, this was the only year we did it.  maybe in 2010?

in 2007 my friends and i lived in an enormous house that had a giant kitchen and two ovens.  we decided to take advantage of this situation and had a massive thanksgiving party with all of our friends.  we mad so much food! and i successfully cooked not one but two turkeys.. my very first attempt!  i was really proud :) side note: why is it not turkies?  but it is puppies, cherries, babies.. but not turkies.. it is turkeys.  weird, right?

image

imageimage

i enlisted two of my friends to carve each bird~

image image

i don’t have any photos of any thanksgivings prior to 2007, unfortunately, but i can tell you that one of my favorite thanksgivings was spent in london when i lived there in 2001.  so fun!

well i hope you all enjoyed this late installment of flashback friday monday!  like i said, better late than never, right??

i cannot believe tomorrow is DECEMBER! that is crazy!! it also happens to be my half birthday~ i will be accepting gifts :P i kid, i kid. but it is hard to believe my birthday was six months ago! yikes!

hope you all have a great first day of december!!

Qs~

1. what is your favorite DRIED fruit? i usually love my mom’s dried apple rings but i am 117% certain my new favorite is the oh! nuts dried pears. yum!

2. there are a lot of opinions about when christmas stuff (ie: music, the tree, lights, decor) is “allowed”~it ranges from the day after halloween to the day after thansgiving to the first day in december.. maybe even later. when do YOU think the christmas shenanigans should ensue? i think the day after thanksgiving is perfect. my neighbors put up the whole north pole the day after halloween and that was a bit ridiculous!!

2 things. That oh nuts package at first glance looks as tall as you. [not that you are tall! but it would be a tall package!] carrot balls. bahahaha. [I’m tired.]

  2. November 30, 2009 11:22 pm

Dried apricots!!! Love them. And dried mango.
I’m fine with some decorations throughout November to get into the season – but more generic holiday/winter. No tree or Christmas stuff until after Thanksgiving!! We unpacked on Friday ;-)

  3. November 30, 2009 11:25 pm

“these were SO moist and juicy!! (TWSS) seriously, this was the best piece of dried fruit i have ever tasted in my life.”
Girl I was lucky enough to sample some Oh Nuts bout 2-3 mos ago and their dried razcherries (rasp & cherries blended into a little dried ball) were the best dried fruit ever.
I really think their stuff is the BEST. Oh Nuts people, I hope you’re reading, I adore all your food!

Round carrots. Weird and Ive never even seen those!

    :)
    xoox

  4. December 1, 2009 12:12 am

Wow! Those SP rounds look awesome!

  5. December 1, 2009 4:06 am

i had sweet potato fries for lunch, yumo!

my mom had a rule that Christmas didn’t start til the day after thanksgiving…we didn’t want to short change thanksgiving by focusing in the future

  6. December 1, 2009 4:41 am

Loved hearing about how you celebrated previous Thanksgivings!

Favorite dried fruit is dried mango!

  7. December 1, 2009 4:52 am

I LOVE your workouts, girl. You workout HARD and I really admire that! My favorite dried fruit is cherries!

I have a quick question for you! You said you like to fast for one hour post-workout to maximize fat burn. I’ve always heard that you should eat within 30 minutes of a workout for muscle repair and growth and restore glycogen stores. Is this wrong, or are you trying to burn fat rather than build muscle? I’d love to hear your opinion on the post-workout meal!

Also, dried apple rings are my crack.

  9. December 1, 2009 4:53 am

Oh no! Sorry about the tooth mishap. Hope you got that fixed my dear.

WOw, those dried pears look awesome. I think pears are one fruit I have not tried in the dehydrated form. Kiwi is also fanatasic but I think my favorite is apricots.

I loved you THanksgiving recaps from the past few years. It’s amazing to see how many things have changed, but so many things have not. I love tradition! ;)

Have a great day sweet girl.

  10. December 1, 2009 5:08 am

These scrambled eggs look fabulous. I know what I’ll have for breakfast tomorrow ;).

I love the flashback Monday pictures. Too bad we don’t have Thanksgiving over here..

  11. December 1, 2009 5:23 am

1.) dried figs and medjool dates!

    2.) all year round ;)

  12. December 1, 2009 5:33 am

Dried apricots are my fave…um and dried ginger but that’s probably more dessert than fruit! Oh and Christmas can start as early as it wants for me! But the day after T-giving seems to be the most acceptable…!

  13. December 1, 2009 5:38 am

even better than all the dried fruit at san fran? even without the sample man?? never!!! lol

omg i die at cheese ball too.

    1) pineapple and mango!

    2) die after tgiv!!!! to embrace the most xmas spirit as possible!!

    3) i LoVeS YA~~!

  15. December 1, 2009 5:58 am

Wow….carrot balls…hmmm. I don’t even know what to say on that one! Those dried pears look really good! Perfect for a yogurt bowl with some almond butter ;) I’ve been digging these dried pineapple chips I made in my dehydrator recently. They are all crispy and taste kind of buttery for some reason! Happy half birthday babe! xoxo

  16. December 1, 2009 6:08 am

LOVE the moves page!!! I am trying some of those out. Minus the bosu ball move, because I will fall flat on my face. About the carrot balls – I’ve always wondered the same thing about baby carrots! I mean, they don’t grow out of the earth perfectly tiny and rounded… And I love that you are getting into spin class. It’s one of my faves :D

    1. Dried pineapple. I’m allergic to regular pineapple and its juice, but for some reason the dried stuff does’t bother me. So it’s how I get my pineapple fix :)

    2. I think Dec 1 is a good time to start putting everything up. One thing that always bugs me is that the Santa Clause parade around here is always in the last week of November. That’s SO early!

    Happy half bee-day JB!! xo

  17. December 1, 2009 6:48 am

That was one HUGE party you kids had! Wowza!

Fave dried fruit is absolutely positively mango. But it’s my fave fresh fruit, too, so I think I’m just obsessive. Cranberries are pretty rad, too.

Xmas… I am used to it after T-Day, but I prefer it to start about 1 December. I think anything before Thanksgiving is a bit absurd!

  18. December 1, 2009 6:56 am

You’re making those dried pears sound awwwwfully good! The Moves page is looking great, girl!
My favorite dried fruit is dried cherry! Mmm so tart and plump!
In our house, Christmas season starts midnight on Black Friday!

dried cherries all the wayyy! and to think, i dont like regular cherries … weird.

Christmas season TOTALLY starts right after thanksgiving! why not celebrate the best holiday everrrr for the longest amount of time possible?! :)

  20. December 1, 2009 7:56 am

I love dried cherries and dried blueberries! But those pears look awesome :)

  21. December 1, 2009 8:10 am

I loved the Thanksgiving flashbacks! It’s great that you have pictures from years past. I can’t find any of my old photos now that I’ve switched computers and such…

  22. December 1, 2009 8:52 am

yay for productive days! I cant believe you work 10 hour.. youre my hero

I love dried apples! nom nom

  23. December 1, 2009 9:17 am

    1. dried apples are about the only ones I like.

    2. I think anytime after Thanksgiving, christmas stuff is allowed.

  24. December 1, 2009 9:24 am

dried PEARS? those sound awesome!!! I think I like all dried fruit that I’ve tried.

Day after Thanksgiving for us, too!

  25. December 1, 2009 9:39 am

holla for spin class! such a fab workout. i wish i could wait an hour until eating but that might resort to me eating my own flesh, and that probs wouldn’t be good for me. or that healthy. or really even that sane. at the time, it probs would seem like a good idea however.

loving up on the garbanzo/CC mixtures, yummy breakfasts and delicious dindins.

i am pretty sure my fave dried fruit is california apricots (not to be confused with the mediterranean variety). and i say november is fair game for all things christmas!!!!!

    LOVE YOU

  26. December 1, 2009 10:35 am

    Round carrots? Wha?

I love the new moves, thanks!

    1) I’m in love with my mom’s dried fruit mix. Apricots, plums, apples, pears and peaches. The apricots are my fav – so sour!

    2) I would say the first couple weeks in Dec is fair game. If you wait too long then you may as well just forget it…

  27. December 1, 2009 11:18 am

You know me, Christmas should be celebrated YEAR ROUND! YEAH! HA! But seriously, I think the day after Thanksgiving is perfect.

I love dried cherries. So tart and juicy! DELICIOUS!

  28. December 1, 2009 11:58 am

i cannot believe its december already too!! ahh where does the time go? it really doesn’t feel this late because it hasnt snowed yet (yay)

yay for spin class! I took one this AM and teaching one at work this evening, 2 spin classes today, yes…I have plenty of food to fuel me throughhout the day though! thats awesome you link your exercises-I love looking at your workouts! I would love to do some crazy HIIT with you :)

love your t-day flashbacks!, penelope has grown up so much, she is still such a cutie!!

I love prunes, and also dried pears, they taste nothing liek real pears in my opinion but so juicy and delicious!

i don’t celebrate xmas, so all this holiday music and red and green starts way to early in my opinion LOL, but I do love getting in the winter/holiday spirit!!

  29. December 1, 2009 12:17 pm

Oh I like seeing your past Thanksgivings! I only have 3 under my belt…well, four actually, and they are fun to remember!
    1) I’m going to gross you out but probably raisins.
    2) December! I think one month is plenty. October=halloween, November=Thanksgiving and December=Christmas! Once December arrives though I am all for 24/7 Christmas tunes, decorations, baking, etc. LOVE IT.

  30. December 1, 2009 1:15 pm

OMG i love the carrot balls. i laughed out loud when i read that :)

your half bday is dec. 1? mine is nov. 1! crazy!!!

    1. my favorite dried fruit is pineapple. holy yum. so sweet and perfect in every way.

    2. uhm my BF and i have a rule. xmas music starts nov. 1 and decorations follow immediately after thanksgiving. i love the holiday season and want to prolong it as long as i can!

  31. December 1, 2009 1:52 pm

Hmm I had dried strawberries one time in a Costco mix and it was pretty amazing. I like pineapple too. I would love to try the Oh Nuts items…but I’m not allowed to buy food online (my own rule!)

And I’m new to the whole Christmas decorating/spirit thing, but I think after Thanksgiving works well. We’re getting a tree and decorating this weekend…and I’m making latkes for us to eat so I don’t completely abandon my heritage!

  32. December 1, 2009 1:56 pm

Your eats look SO good – I’m gonna have to check out that TJ’s sauce!

I didn’t know you lived in London! My mom was born there (though she’s American) and I lived there one summer for drama school in high school. Chris’ sister and family are about to be stationed there for 3 years so we’ll definitely be going back. I’m hoping to take a side trip to somewhere that I haven’t been to…like Spain or Greece!

I feel like we always TRY to be in the Christmas spirit of kindness and giving year round, and don’t do anything really special this time of year except for see our friends more often. We don’t do a tree, but one year I’d like to have someone professionally decorate the outside of our house with white lights. Simple but beautiful!

    1. Dried apricots fo’ sho. But I’ve never tried a dried pear so who really knows!
    2. I agree that the day after Thanksgiving is perf.

  34. December 1, 2009 2:18 pm

i really like cranberries!!! Your cottage cheese thing looks goooood :)

  35. December 1, 2009 4:32 pm

I have never had dried pears, but they look scrumptious! I LOVE dried mango + dried kiwi.

And I think the day after Thanksgiving is the perfect time to start playing Christmas music. However this year I must admit I whipped out the Relient K Christmas CD on Nov 23. oops…

    Loved the Flashback Monday!

    2. I agree, the day after Thanksgiving is the perfect day to crank up the Christmas spirit!

  40. December 1, 2009 6:50 pm

Isn’t that seasoning the best? I’m so glad I got it this weekend. I want to put it on everything. Your bfast mix looks incredible. Sorry to hear about the trip to the dentist.

    1. I love freeze dried fruits over dried- mango or bananas are my favorite!
    2. Yes! Christmas decor to the max the day after t giving

  41. December 1, 2009 7:14 pm

mad props to you for limiting to yourself to just one milano – I could go to town on those white and black CRACK-ies.

I vote for more “memory mondays” – I always love your throwbacks.. espec. when they include grub!

    1. prunes. Yes, i’m 80 years old
    2. the day after thanksgiving is free game for christmas decor!

  42. December 1, 2009 7:18 pm

Oooh I love sin class! Love it.

    1. I love apple rings and dried mangos – yum daddy.

    2. I’m with you – the day after thanksgiving is the time to start getting excited about christmas – at least I’m excited and ready for the lights. :-)

  45. December 1, 2009 9:48 pm

I love dried fruit. So much it’s scary so I don’t buy it very often.

This is so random but I just read in my son’s grammar book two weeks ago why the plural of turkey is turkeys instead of turkies like cherry/cherries.

In turkey, there is a vowel in front of the y so you only add a “s”. Whereas in cherry there is a consonant in from on the y so the y gets dropped and changed to ies. :)

    2. (I actually just wrote a long post about this!) I think Christmas colors/decoration/music are a December 1st – December 26th thing.

I am so appreciative of the workout pics!! I love that I can see a step by step of how to do the moves! My fave dried fruit is dates. They are so sweet like a gooey candy

  48. December 1, 2009 10:53 pm

First of all, Christmas music is TOTALLY allowed in my book once Thanksgiving passes….but those commercials should only run the week of! I love ’em at first, but then they drive me NUTS. hahah!!!

Speaking of….those dried pears sound amazing! I don’t think i’ve ever tried a dried pear.

And HAPPY HALF BIRTHDAY!!! Loved the flashback friday :) I spy some olive bread at last year’s thanksgiving! I DIE. Favorite thing, ever. XOXOX!!!

  49. December 2, 2009 12:19 am

Not a lover of dried fruit, but I do like that freeze dried stuff- it’s all puffy and light. (and light in cals).

Christmas stuff- yeah, I’m with you. Day after TG.

OK . The two doggies KILL KILL KILL me. And baby Penny. To quote you: “I die”.

This is random, but your eyelashes look SOOOOOo long in that photo of you with the turkey leg (and yes, weird turkeys not turkies!)

OMG LOVE anything with cinn/sug on it, esp s.p. YUM!!

OK I thought that you are supposed to eat WITHIN 15-60 minutes to replenish your glycogen stores for your next workout?? Is that cardio 60 minute theory a BFL??

Thanks for the rockin comments- you’re so sweet and you have 587 blogs to read! Hugs!
