flashback friday round five.

September 4, 2009

oy vey! so happy it is a 3 day weekend!

first off, i think from reading all your comments on my last post that it is safe to consider the liquid that comes packaged and boasts that it is from almonds, rice, soy, coconut, hemp etc can officially be called "milk".  thanks for having my back on that, i can’t wait to tell my boss.

i also wanted to mention again, since there have been a lot more readers since my pronunciation post, that the way you pronounce my name is ja-NEE-tha. so the "ne" sounds the same as the letter "b" in "janetha b."  and for the record, my name is a hard one to have. thanks mom ;)

so, this morning was off to a rocky start when i got to work and the boss was on a rampage about all sorts of random issues.  i grabbed some coffee and knew there was not time to make my morning oatmeal. grumble.

i guzzled sipped on the water and sipped on guzzled the coffee in hopes to tame my tummy until i could get a meal in.  eventually.. that did happen!

meals_thumb

meal 1: reeses PB cup protein oats a la k @ 11:30 AM<—yikes

meals 357
i saw the lovely k whip up a batch of oats with the addition of PB2 and chocolate PB2 in this post and i knew i had to give it a try.  i cooked my oats on the stove and added the usual scoop of vanilla protein powder.  then i drizzled both PB2 and chocolate PB2 on top.. it was stellar!

meals 359
i worked some more and dealt with all the crap that has been going on this week at work.  i don’t know why all these problems have to happen right in the middle of me needing to get the financials prepared for the 2008 taxes.. but i guess it is true what they say: when it rains, it pours!

enough about work though, i am off until tuesday!!

in between meal 1 and 2 i ran some errands and hit up the post office to mail my share yourself package and a little birthday cheer to ellie and i also mailed miss GDW a check for our hotel room for the FOODBUZZ FESTIVAL! yayer!

meal 2: turkey rolls, veggies & hummus @ 3:20 AM

meals 363 meals 364
so this is random. it is what i had at work in the old fridgarino so this is what i ate! i like that there are 4 different colors of veggies though :)

oh! funny thing. my red pepper is a boy!

meals 361

i don’t think i will name him. i will eat him instead.

i was off work less than two hours later and was heading straight to the gym so i had a little something to power me through my workout. i guess we will call it a meal. sure, ok!

meal 3: toasted nuts’n’cranberry luna @ 5:15 PM

meals 366

i would review this for you but i gobbled it up before i could think to take photos.. so, maybe next time. i liked it a lot though, for the record.

time for flashback friday round 5!

two years ago today i was in california on a family vacation.  i have 2 sisters and 1 brother, they are all married with kids~ i have a total of 7 nieces and nephews.  so with my parents that makes it a total of 16 people.  not easy to finagle a family vacation, but we try to do it at least every other year.  we like to pick vacations where it is easy to be together yet at the same time do our own thing.  arranging a vacation where 16 people all do the same thing the whole time is impossible!

fbf2

so this time around we picked oceanside, callfornia as the destination and my mom found a sweet house that had tons of bedrooms and bathrooms and a HUGE kitchen.  it was located right on the beach and just a short walk from the pier.

fbf9

fbf6

i like to highlight food if i can on my flashback friday posts.. and what do you know, i was a budding food blogger before i knew it!

there is a reallllly fabulous coffee house in encinitas called the pannikan that my brother and sister law raved about.  they visit their friends in the area often and so they know the sweet spots!  i ordered an iced coffee & a bagel.. let me tell you, fanciest bagel i have ever encountered!

fbf1
that tri-color tower is sun dried tomato, cream cheese and pesto.  and look how fabulous the red delicious apple half is sliced. i was super impressed!  and it was, of course, delicious.

fbf5

one night at the house my sister busted out her chocolate fountain and we had a fondue party with lots of dippers including fruit, pretzels, marshmallows, graham crackers, cheesecake and everyone’s favorite: cream puffs!

fbf3
as you can see, my mom couldn’t wait for us to load the fountain and had to enjoy a dipped cream puff straight from the melting pot of bubbly chocolate.  this is one of my favorite photos of her. of. all. time.

fbf4

yum.

one of the days we went to disneyland.  it was a lot of fun to see how excited the little kids were to meet all the characters.  oh and excited the grown up janetha b was to meet tigger ;)

fbf8
my mom and i ate the infamous disneyland turkey legs while there… honestly they were not THAT great.

fbf7
we are rarely ALL together since my sister and her fam live in the bay area and not in utah, so when we do get together we have to have family photos taken.  it is an ongoing joke about how we don’t want them to visit us ever because then we will have to get family photos.. it is always such a pain in the butt! but it is all about the memories, i suppose.

FAMILY PHOTOS 078
i had to leave early to fly back to the SLC to take a test.  yeah, i was studious at one point in my life!!  it was a fun trip, the older i get the more i realize how important spending time with my family really is.  they are all my best friends!!

did you participate in FBF? let me know and i will post a link tomorrow! i know that ellie and susan have already put their FBF posts up!!

ok, now this post is exxxtra long! don’t lie, you love it ;)

have a great night everyone, and happy 3 day weekend if you have one!

Qs

1. favorite vehicle for chocolate fondue? creampuffs. for reals.

2. best family vacation you ever went on? kauai was my favorite thus far! it was maybe 4 or so years ago?

I just adore pepper porn! :-)

I have never had fondue- have I not yet lived?

Best familia vacay…My Mom, Bro and I went to London, then Portugal (Lisbon & the algarve)…both were spectacular.

Recently: transatlantic crossings with hubby and Dad take the cake! :-)

My family NEVER went on one vacation when I was growing up due to my dad’s work schedule. But, when I was 20, I went to Orlando and Panama City Beach with my mom, sister, and my boyfriend at the time. I convinced my mom to get her nose pierced. It was something she had always wanted to do but never had the confidence to take the plunge. She still has the piercing almost 3 years later and it looks so cute on her pretty face!

  3. September 4, 2009 10:27 pm

oh beautiful!!! you look like you are having SO much fun!!
    your oats sound phenom-da-bomb!

my weapon of choice of fondu? strawbs.
    vacay? domincan replublic
    woot woot!

So I failed yet again on FBF – I am going to stop saying I will do it and then feeling bad and just surprise you one Friday with a super awesome one, k? Great.

I can’t believe you did not eat until 11.30am – that is literally impossible for me on a weekday – I would pass out or puke or shout at someone really loudly. Ha ha.

The oats look well pretty though! I also enjoy that your pepper has a willy because I am five and I say “willy”.

Did I get missed on Share Yourself? I signed up but I haven’t got an address to send to yet :(

Love your Flashback. Family holidays are crazytown. That house looks baller though, as does that bagel with its crazy town tower of love!

    1) I have no idea what a cream puff is. Fact. I would say bananas but they are one of my favorite vehicles in general…
    2) When I was 17 I had the most ridiculous non-standard summer: two weeks in the south of france with my parents on their boat with my brother and my best friend…followed almost immediately by two weeks in the British Virgin Islands with the rents for more sailing. I don’t know how it happened but it was amazing!

Have a grand weekend relaxing my sweet. x

  5. September 4, 2009 11:14 pm

Chocolate fondue….drool…Best dipper – definitely strawberries!

We haven’t done a family vacation in a LONG time, but I’d say my favorite was probably a trip we all went on to Arizone. We saw the Grand Canyon, went to Slide Rock, and did all kinds of other stuff, and I was little so I appreciated it!

Now I’m just happy when all 8 (there were six before 2 parents and 4 kids, but now my brother is married and Tyler isn’t going anywhere so we’ll call it 8) of us are in the same place at all!

  6. September 4, 2009 11:27 pm

Thanks for the birthday shout-out :D

I LOVE Flashback Friday! So cool that you guys all get together- must be rough living so far away from your family. Most of mine are scattered around the US so it’s very rare that we all get together :(

    1. favorite vehicle for chocolate fondue? never had (!) but am thinking cookie dough would be awesome!

    2. best family vacation you ever went on? tough one…probably our camping trips to Europe. The tents were set up and had beds, electricity, etc so hardly “roughing it” but so much fun!

First, your MOM found the house? Your MOM? Don’t you mean SISTER? You guys put me up to finding things and then I don’t even get credit? I quit! Just kidding. I’ll let her have the credit since she takes us there but I did spend many hours searching for that place!

I love the boy pepper. Remind me to not cut my hair that short or you might have two brothers and one sister. We need to have a cream puff and chocolate fountain night!

  8. September 4, 2009 11:47 pm

I LOVE all your pictures, especially the one with TIgger!
    1. Pears. So sweet and crunchy and delicious.
    2. Trip to LA. I had so much fun touring the Warner Brothers studios!

  9. September 5, 2009 4:52 am

Bahaha, that red pepper just made this post PG13 :P

Your family is TOO cute!!! My sisters need to jump on the baby bandwagon so I can be an auntie! I’m with you, as I get older I realize how important family time is.

    1. I’ve never had chocolate fondue. I’ve had TONS of oil fondues at the insistance of others. Which are okay, but I have a digestive intolerance to cooking oils, so they always result in major tummy troubles. I don’t know why anyone would choose oil over chocolate…

    2. My mom and I went to Mexico to visit my oldest sister while she was going to university there. We stayed in this small town with a family who owned a juice bar. We basically spent our days eating salsa and drinking corona, it was fabulous!

  10. September 5, 2009 4:52 am

I love chocolate fondue, and my favorite dipping vehicle is bananas!

We didn’t go on many family vacations which is probably good since my brother and I fought all the time. But once I got married, my hubby and I had a great vacation to the Georgia mountains one year. Beautiful – and no fighting!

  11. September 5, 2009 5:09 am

I hate not being able to eat first thing, I feel for ya!

Your red pepper made me laugh ;)

And I loved your reinvention meal #5- looks great!

One question (I’m all about questions lately, aren’t I?) What are dumbell butterflies for the abs? Never heard of ’em (or maybe I just don’t remmeber!) It would be really cool if you could do an abs post- I’m looking for some new exercises!

    1. I love chocolate fondue with marshmallows or crystallized ginger!

    2. My family took a trip to NYC every single year except for last, and it’s always my favorite trip! Broadway, shopping, a foodie mecca, so much fun!

oh….are you sending the share yourself package already? I didn’t get any email from Special K about who send to yet. :(

Are you going to FBF alone? I’d love to go but they told me that I can’t bring my mom with me so I won’t be able to go.

Love that pic of you with the chocolate fountain.
What’s my fav. vehicle for chocolate fountain? strawberries/cherries, just because they look so sexy with chocolate! :)

  13. September 5, 2009 6:18 am

Ha ha! Tigger’s my favorite, too :) I love your little boy pepper. Did you know that eggplants actually are male and female and that there’s a way to tell? Interesting. Oh, and guess what else? Be proud, Janetha B., I lifted some weights on my little armies today. Yee haw!

  14. September 5, 2009 6:47 am

This post really warmed my soul. I love your fantastic family photos and it was so heartwarming to see you and your loves enjoying a wonderful experience together.

Family vacations are the best. We go to Myrtle Beach with my family most summers and it truly is the best time!

Hope you have a great weekend hun!

I feel ya on the hard to pronounce names! Not only do I have to correct people on how to say and spell my first name, my last name is an absolute train wreck!

Girl, you know I’m loving the Reese’s cup oats!! Delish! Hah to your pepper, usually mine has green tumors growing in it – does that mean mine are girls?! That Luna is one of the few flavors I like – it’s granola-y!

    LOVE the flashback!!
    1. Strawberries or pound cake

That pepper is hilarious! Sorry about the work issues, I feel ya! I’m trying not to be disgruntled over the long weekend, but it can be tough.

    1. pound cake (sarah lee)
    2. My family vacations are always really stressful but when I was little they were always so fun because I was unaware of any drama. Miss those days!

Have a good Saturday Ja NEE tha!

i want to join the benson family. i swear, each one of your posts get better and better. annnddd…i forgot to tell you, i totally visited mama b’s blog when you sent me the link, and i think her dedications to all the kids are absolutely one of the sweetest things i’ve ever read.

As does that couscous dish. Anything with cottage cheese has my intrigued.

I freaking love that flashback cream cheese tower! I’ve never seen such fancied up cream cheese.

I’VE HAD THE TURKEY LEGS! Well I think my dad the last time I was there and was much too wee to handle one myself but I had bites. I think the novelty is more fun than actually eating the leg.

I’d have to say that I loved the family vacation when we went on a cruise in 2001. I met my husband on that cruise! I love our ski trips – we went to Mammoth in March and it was awesome.

I just had a Greek yogurt after seeing some on your blog. I actually had to go buy it at the store today. It hit the spot! :)

  40. September 7, 2009 4:21 am

I’m starting to love FF! That Oceanside house looks AMAZING. Oh, I miss Cali so much. Never had the experience of a chocolate fountain, can you believe it? I think I would go for marshmellows, though…YUM.

  41. September 7, 2009 6:40 am

OK that pepper is OBSCENE! ;)

I think I’ve only ever had strawberries and fondue, at a wedding! Apparently I am missing out.

The family vacation I ever went on? Probably Disney with my parents as a kid and the Poconos last year with my own family!
