back to basics.

August 9, 2009

HI! how is errrybody this fine sunday evening?

thanks for all the feedback on flashback friday, i hope other people participate on their own blogs next friday!  it was also fun to hear that several of you have always taken photos of your food.  i guess we all have always liked the look of what we eat :)

okay, so i have to tell you guys that i am so stoked on all of your comments.  everyone has made me feel so much better about things and a lot of you are also taking on the challenge to cut out the extra snacking and to polish up your eating habits.  i really cannot express how grateful i am for this (not so) little community.  you are all so supportive!  with every comment i read i felt more and more motivated and inspired to do something about it.

with that said, i wanted to post one of my favorite inspirational quotes by ralph marston~

“Do something about it. When something is troubling you, make the commitment to change it. Then begin to act on that decision right away. Some of the influences in your life are under your control, and many of those influences are outside your control. Yet you can always decide upon and put into action a positive response to anything. Don’t sit around being amazed at how miserable you are and at how unfairly life is treating you. Instead, be amazed at how quickly and effectively you can do something about it.  Don’t complain to others about how tough it is for you. Instead, inspire them with your positive and enthusiastic attitude and actions. When the world feels all wrong, that’s a valuable signal. It’s your way of telling yourself to get going and make a difference.  You have plenty of good options if you’ll simply make the effort to find them. Pick the best one, get busy putting it into action, and take positive control of your world.”

good stuff, no?  i find it rather inspirational and i thought you guys would like it too.

OH before i forget, i want to reply to so many of your comments but wordpress hates my hotmail account and all my email notifications are now sent to my work email account and soooo i can’t access them to directly reply since i am not at my office.  but tomorrow you can all expect some replies from me. mmmk?

before i dive into the future let me talk a little about the past.  the past being yesterday…

SATURDAY!

i’m not going to lie, the eats were uneventful.  i suppose i will show them to you anyway though! this was scattered throughout the day~

SUNDAY!

after not any sleep at all, it was ultra cold and the ground was super rocky so yeah, that equaled little to no sleep, we got up and packed up camp and headed to brighton ski resort to eat at the cafe~the one that my roommate jessica manages and i have posted about before.

meals_thumb

i went with 2 eggs (scrambled) and dry wheat toast + coffee~

8-8-09 258

we drove home and i did some laundry and showered the stank of the campfire from my hair and changed for the gym.

then i headed to the treadmill to see how fast i could bust out a mile and ended up running a mile in 7:40.. not too shabby for running immediately after HIIT!

i am bummed that i left my HRM at home. i am a space case, i blame this on my mom :)

good workout though!

i then hit up costco and got some stuff for my office~you know, paper towels, toilet paper, dish soap, utensils, lalala all that good office stuff.  but i also picked up some stuff for myself including the latest clean eating magazine and jillian michael’s book master your metabolism.. have you guys read this? is it good? it was cheap so i picked it up.

meals_thumb

i just got done eating a wrap that had grilled chicken, fungus, sprouts, cukes, LCL cheese and annie’s dijon.

8-8-09 260

i have downed half a gallon of the agua, another half to go.

ohhhh kay.  now that the past is out of the way i want to talk a little about the future.  the next 6 weeks are going to be strict and boring.  i will still be posting my meals & moves but i can’t promise that the meals will be all that exciting.  i owe it to myself to get back to the basics and reach my full potential.

before this blog.. i had another blog.  it was more geared toward body for life. if you would like to check out the old posts of mine you can, the blog was actually titled after the words of ralph marston that i posted above.

do something about it.

so if you feel like it you can check it out.  lots of people i know started body for life at the same time i started that blog so the posts were mainly to support everyone during the challenge.  unfortunately that challenge went horribly and i got sick, food poisoning, blah blah blah it didn’t work out.  but i did several accountability days and my meals for the next 6 weeks will be similar to those days i posted on that blog, only this time i will include photos.

i read that blog again.  i read it over and over.  the first few posts on there are quality.  i am going to be that janetha again.  i don’t know what happened to her but i am going to find her and be her from here on out.  i am glad i kept that blog, i am taking advice from my former self.  i give pretty good advice, i just need to practice what i preach :)

a few of my goals/guidelines for the next 6 weeks are as follows:

  • drink at least 1 gallon of water daily
  • 3 sessions of HIIT a week
  • 3 strength training workouts a week (alternating upper and lower body)
  • remember to take all vitamins & supplements daily (CLA, multivitamin, fish oil and calcium chew)
  • no nut butter, hummus, cereal, white bread/pasta/etc, refined sugar or full fat dairy (except on free day MAYBE)
  • 40/40/20 ratio eating
  • 5 small meals/snacks a day
  • take photos (of myself) and measurements every 2 weeks
  • no random bites, licks or tastes (BLTs)
  • get a decent amount of sleep every night

i think this is a good list to start with.

this post is lots of rambling again, i seem to be good at that lately.  i will get back to my regular posting soon enough, thanks for hanging in there and putting up with my random thoughts.  i am so stoked on all of you and i want to thank everyone for their friendship!!

few things..

1. a fellow blogger brought up the fact that i needed to add her to my blogroll! yes, i am behind on this. if you and i are blog homies and you don’t see your name to the right, give me a shout so i know to add you on there.

2. i will be hosting a giveaway next week. it will not be your average giveaway but some of you will be real excited!

and now i have a few questions!

1. do you take vitamins and/or supplements? if so, what do you take? when i was doing my first 12 week BFL challenge i religiously took CLA, fish oil and a multivitamin but i would like to learn more about vitamins and supplements that will benefit me.

2. what is your goal for this week? i already rambled about mine up there ;)

3. how do you like your marshmallow? we had an in depth discussion about this camping.  there is a lot to be said as far as how you like you mallow.  flaming? burnt to a crisp? lightly toasted? “raw” (i.e. not roasted at all, we dubbed it raw), not at all?

i hope everyone had a fanfreakingtasic weekend!! mass amounts of love to all of you. for reals.

Looks like you had one great weekend. That marshmallow is really burnt.
Great quote by the way. Thanks for sharing it.

That quote really struck a chord with me! It is so motivating. Good luck with your goals and the strict BFL meals/workouts.

I am kinda bad about taking vitamins…I take Cal-Mag almost everyday.
My goal is to get back into a ‘Clean Eating’ lifestyle. Small meals each day, protein, veggies, etc. It sounds similar to BFL but I don’t know much about BFL either :)
I like my marshmallow crisp, GOLDEN brown.

P.S. Why can’t you have nut butter? Is it not in the BFL eating plan as a healthy fat? Just wondering, cuz I would go CRAZY without nut butter! :)

  4. August 9, 2009 8:25 pm

I love that quote!! Thanks for posting it. I’m totally gonna save it :D

Haha I love the burnt marshmallow. Roasting marshmallows was one of my favorite vacation memories. I’d burn a lot of mine, but my dad could make the perfect golden brown marshmallow. I don’t know how he does it!

Whoo that is a speedy mile, girl! Good job!

    1) Ahahaha, I pop so many pills I feel like a 90-year old grandma some times. I take 2 fish oil, 2 multivitamins, 2 hyaluronic acid pills for my knees, and 3 glucosamine/chrondroiton capsules for my knees as well. I also take chewable vitamin C and I try to remember calcium sometimes. I also take 2 probiotic pills a day.

    2) my goal is to pack and survive the 4 day drive to AZ!

    3) golden brown, but I do like the occasional charred ‘mallow.

And Janetha, good luck on your goals. I know you will reach your potential and even beyond what you ever thought was possible. You are so strong and determined, and I know you’ll get there :)

ADD ME TO YOUR BLOG ROLL!
But seriously, that quote is VERY inspirational. I totally support your six week adventure. I’ll be reading your blog every step of the way.
Marchmallow wise? I made the best concoction every two weeks ago: two ginger snaps sandwiching a piece of 72% dark chocolate and a burnt-azz marshie. Then, I placed it over two skewers to melt the chocolate & warm up the ginger snaps. AMAZING. if you ever need a treat… highly suggested.
    Good luck with everything!

That quote was exactly what I needed to read tonight, as I, too, am prepared to head back to basics. Way too much indulging lately, and your quote and blog post has given me the little nudge I needed to step forward and make a change.

    Thx for that girly!!

  7. August 9, 2009 9:33 pm

Good luck on your mission girl :D I’m way downnn with the brownish- dare i say blackened marshmallow for s’mores..ahh so good!

JANETHA. I really hope you got my comment on the post before last. I don’t know if you did, though, because I lost internet connection after I hit “submit.” If you didn’t, it was basically my full support behind you, and thinking you bossy anyway and you know how to get back where you want.

That being said, that list there sounds tough! For me at least; you can def. handle it! And I’m actually very interested to see exactly what these eats are! I like that your “what not to eat list” is exactly “my daily eats” list. Whoops.

I’ve never been camping, or slept outdoors, and your non-sleep experience reminded me exactly why I still haven’t tried. You’re a tough cookie! (Ooh, is that another of those odd phrases/sayings).

I don’t take supplements, but know that I really need to take a B12 supplement. Bad vegan! My goal for the week is to have a blast with MamaJ! And I like my marshmallows burnt or raw–the extremes!

Good luck with Monday and a supah fresh start!!!

  9. August 9, 2009 10:08 pm

oh lovey no wonder you haven’t gotten my blog. What is your hotmail email? my new website addy is blackberrymuffy.wordpress.com
    appropriate eh? :)
It isn’t that I Want to keep it secret, but i don’t want people that don’t really care much to feel like they need to go there either. i dunno :) lol.
im not wanting to advertise i guess.

the exotic harvest chips look AWESOME.

    The campfire looks fun :)

def add me to the blogroll btw :)

    Questions:
    1. I take prenatal vitamins (for the hair and skin) and I take my greens often (amazing grass or greens+) … Not really anything else at the moment since I’m tight on money.
    2. my goal for this week is to stop retaining so much water and to get off a couple pounds that are clinging on!
    3. i’m not a big marshmellow person but i DO love smores. I like them but i dont prefer them. I would say lightly toasted is perfect. or esploded in the ‘wave! LOL.

    *hugs*

Fun camping weekend! The quote is great, and I like how you know exactly what you’re going to do to work on your challenge. I would love it if you would add me to your blogroll! :)

    And for your questions:
    1. I take a multi-vitamin, a kids one actually because I’m a baby and hate swallowing the big grown up pills.
    2. My goal for the week is to finish all my group projects for school without pulling my hair out or hurting anyone. Haha
    3. I like my marshmallows cooked to a nice golden brown. You just made me hungry for smores!

  13. August 10, 2009 5:23 am

Ha, my first comment was going to be about how I love my marshmallows that lovely dark brown colour that yours is up there :P

I’m actually quite curious to see what your eating will be like!! I attempted 40/40/20 before and made myself sick with cottage cheese and tuna. So maybe you’ll be able to give me some good protein ideas :)

No nut butter or hummus makes me kinda sad though :( I like the idea of free days though, at least you won’t have to be strict the whole time. And I like the “BLTs,” I’m remebering that one! I’m aaawwful for taking bites, licks and tastes of things. I don’t even want to think of the daily calories I rack up doing that…

    oh, and…

    1. Nada. I hate choking down pills, I need to find some chews or something.

    2. My goal for this week is to take some time for myself, and lay off on the work stress!

  14. August 10, 2009 5:45 am

    Camping looked so fun!

I take a multivitamin everyday- the gummybear kind!
My goal for this week is to workout 4 times this week.
I like my marshmallow either raw, or a little toasted….. no burnt for me!

  15. August 10, 2009 6:32 am

Looks like you had a great weekend! I love tin foil dinners!

    1. I take a multivitamin. I’m sure there are other suppliments that I could take but I’m lucky if I remember to take one vitamin a day.

    2. To not let my eating get out of control. It’s going to be a crazy busy week at work and between that and lack of sleep it’s easy to fall into bad habits.

    3. Lightly toasted. My brother always makes fun of me because I’m super picky when I toast marshmallows. He loves it because he always ends up with the ones I screw up!

  16. August 10, 2009 6:49 am

Great plan girl and looks like you had an awesome time camping!
    1. I take fish oil pills, b-vitamins, and kyolic garlic pills.
    2. I don’t really have any goals this month, besides workout with my boy as much as possible.
    3. I love my marshmallows burned to a crisp and pressed between graham crackers. I can do without the chocolate as well. I rather eat that part seperately.

  17. August 10, 2009 6:52 am

girl you have got an awesome plan going on there :) I’m interested in what foods you’re gonna eat!

I don’t take any pills but I think I want to start taking omega-3s
My goal this week will be drink ALOT of water :)
And I like my marshmellows to stay in the bag. Haha I despise marshmellows!

  18. August 10, 2009 6:53 am

If there’s a will, there’s a way! I want to run and hide at the idea of no nut butter but I do know that sometimes you have to go to extremes to get back to the place we’re your comfortable in your own skin.

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail, right?? Thumbs up for mapping it all out, you are on your way.

  19. August 10, 2009 7:31 am

Tin foil dinners are THE BEST!

And I’m totally with you on the frustration over extra snacking.

  20. August 10, 2009 8:03 am

Those “exotic chips” sound SO GOOD!! Plus anything with hummus has to be tasty, right?

Burnt marshmallows are delicious – I love the char! I’m weird, this is true. Sorry you froze! It still sounds like fun :)

My blogroll is SO OLD!! I can’t bring myself to update it though – too much work.

    1. I’m supposed to take a multi/calcium/omega 3 but I always forget
    2. No goals because I’m still on break!
    3. I answered that :D

  21. August 10, 2009 8:11 am

I got Jillian’s book when I saw it at TJ Maxx for cheap too! I’m not a huge fan of her writing style but the information is pretty good. I’m only about half way through it.

i have to update my blogroll too…consider yourself added!

i dont do supplements, not sure why, i dont really feel passionate about it one way or the other.
i think mallows need to be toasted until the center is goooey, but who has the patience for that!! that said, i cant remember the last time i ate a marshmallow.

fun camping trip! i wanna go if for no other reason than the veg chips and home made hummus combo :)

  24. August 10, 2009 9:44 am

    Excellent quote!
    1. Nope, I don’t take any supplements. I figure that I eat enough fruits and veggies to keep me covered.
    2. My goal for this week is to eat more like I do on vacation–intuitively!
    3. Although I am not the biggest mallow fan, I like them nice and crispy in my s’mores.

  25. August 10, 2009 9:48 am

Smores with no chocolate makes me sad…

  28. August 10, 2009 1:12 pm

I keep wanting to try those chips! They’re so colorful!

  29. August 10, 2009 1:44 pm

Wha…?? No nut butter or hummus?! Dang, don’t kill yourself girl! I here ya though– sometimes it’s so much easier to stay away from those foods trying to have just a little bit. You are so brave for going up camping this weekend! It was freezing on Saturday! I have to say your marshmallow looked amazing! I usually try to get mine the perfect golden brown, but more often than not I catch it on fire in the last minute and get it the perfect charred black instead. Of course I eat it anyway :)
P.S. I’d love a holla on your blogroll when you get to it, too. Thnx xoxo

I said on the last post and I’ll say it again – I am with ya lady. I’m all for getting back to basics. We’ll all still read cos we love your ramblings. You rock.
I don’t take supplements mainly because I already have to take so many pills for my crazy bowels that I get SICK of popping pills.
