it’s a christmas miracle!

July 20, 2009

okay well maybe not a christmas miracle seeing as how it is july.. but it is a miracle none the less!  i woke up today and i could finally taste!!!

before we talk about that, i better recap yesterday because it was another day of tortuous, non-smelling, non-tasting hell.  lovely, right?

SUNDAY!

well i think i left off with a glass of OJ and a protein shake down the hatch, correct? yes. well i never ended up getting marshall out of bed to head to the pool, he was crying because he stayed up for over 24 consecutive hours. gee, the poor thing.

i got some things done around the casa which was nice, i made a small dent in the heap of clean clothes that has officially swallowed my bedroom.  i baked the vegans some muffins and i watched a whole lot of food network :)

while i had some coffee & a braeburn

IMG_1892

we went to the parents’ for dinner.  once again, a tasteless meal that i am sure was phenomenal! i am not sure why i ate.. but i did..

i ate 73 pounds of watermelon.. dude, it was 100 degrees out.. even though i couldn’t taste, the cold watermelon was so refreshing!

IMG_1895

the bean wanted some. she got a trader joe’s PB dog treat instead.

the spread was grilled chicken, green salad & fruit salad for the most part.. there was some purple steamed cauliflower somewhere too…

IMG_1896

here is my plate. i didn’t bother putting dressing on the salad since i couldn’t taste!

IMG_1897

not much, i know, it is because i filled up on watermelon before dinner!

okay, now that we have covered sunday’s eats i can talk to you about what went on afterward.  i couldn’t taste.  i haven’t been able to smell or taste for about 10 days now, you all know this because i won’t stop bitching about it (sorry about that by the way.. but hey, you choose to read my ramblings!).. SO, it was family to the rescue!

first i took some mucinex

Mucinex

(that green dude creeps me out!)

and then my mom suggested i try the neti pot.. i have heard/seen a lot about this thing, everyone always raves about them and some of you even suggested i use one during this sickness..but never had i attempted to use one on my own!!  until yesterday.

i can’t believe i am posting these photos, but it was hilarious so i just have no shame!! gotta document this kind of thang.  you mix some medicine up in some water, put it in the pot, pour the magical solution in one side of your nose and it comes out the other. (gross)

not so sure..

IMG_1898

woah. weird. so weird.

IMG_1899

hi marshall (camera man), i am sure you would love to kiss me looking like this :)

IMG_1901

hahah. ok, so sorry if that grossed anyone out but at least it was just water.. nothing gnarly came out of the woodworks! and i thought it was funny looking, for all those inquiring minds that wonder what a neti pot is.. no ya know!

and that didn’t help a bit.

so then my brother in law gets some crazy idea to make a magical voodoo brew for me to drink and regain my senses..

IMG_1908

i think some of the ingredients were chicken broth, garlic, lemon, cayenne pepper, onion.. hmmm i don’t know what else, but it took him forever to brew it up and everyone but me could smell the potency of it!

appetizing, no?

IMG_1909

here i go.. yeah i am looking real haggard from blowing my nose for a century and a half, whatevs

IMG_1912

um. it was hot, but i couldn’t taste anything.

IMG_1915

the cayenne pepper burned my throat and mouth, but with no flavor what so ever.. it was the weirdest experience!

IMG_1914

my mom tried it. she wasn’t a fan. she also wasn’t sick..

IMG_1916

brother in law’s reaction to my mom’s reaction to the brew:

IMG_1918

and my brother in law, the creator, also gave it a whirl.

 IMG_1919

apparently he dug it!

anyway, i couldn’t taste after that either. i went home feeling defeated and full of watermelon.

on the upside i got to catch the new episode of the next food network star!  ohhh i knew they would give jamika the boot!  i hope melissa wins.  who do you guys want to win?

SUNDAY!

since i didn’t eat much yesterday i woke up at 5:00 AM hangry! i went to let the dogs out and snatched up a vegan blueberry banana muffin that i made for the vegan dudes at marshall’s place.  i could taste a hint of something, but nothing amazing.  i went back to bed for 45 minutes and then got up and ready for work.

along with monday comes the usual sales meeting at the original pancake house.. surprise surprise.

today i got coffee, dry wheat toast & egg beaters+spinach+mushrooms+onion+avocado.. my boss said, “there is no possible way to jam any more disgusting ingredients into one dish”.. whatever, he has no clue what good food tastes like!

IMG_1927

i took one sip of my coffee and started FREAKING OUT!!!

IMG_1924

i could taste!! I COULD REALLY TASTE!

i was ecstatic!

that scramble was massive.. i didn’t eat it all. but i did douse it in cholula after the photo shoot!

IMG_1926

oh man.. i sure to appreciate my sense of taste you guys.  you have no idea.. try not being able to taste for 10 days and you will REALLY appreciate the way food tastes when it comes back to you :D

for lunch we had a luncheon fiesta thing like awhile back. but i wasn’t hungry at 11:30 when we had it because we had eaten breakfast at 8.  i stay full for awhile.  i did make a salad for everyone though:

IMG_1928

  • spinach
  • romaine
  • diced chicken
  • slivered almonds
  • basil & garlic feta cheese
  • craisins
  • avocado
  • poppyseed dressing

IMG_1929

this salad takes .2 minutes to put together and it is always a hit, always delicious. this is the star of the show:

popp

this stuff will seriously make a salad of shoelaces and rubberbands taste amazing. try it.

around 1 PM i got hungry so i decided to give my newly found sense of taste a treat and eat some of my salad. i normally wouldn’t unless it was a “free day” because of the higher fat content in the dressing. but come on, i can finally taste!!!

IMG_1932

i had this small bowl and now i am enjoying my third liter of water for the day.  it is my own personal daily goal to drink a gallon of water every single day this week!  i was slacking a tad near the end of last week so i need to step it up.

so who knows what made my senses come back?  not me.  maybe it was time.  maybe it was the neti pot.. but i know my brother in law would like to think it was his magical home brew.  i guess it is possible.. maybe he should patent that concoction? i will tell him that it was the cure all, just to make him happy.  because i know i am happy now!

  2. July 20, 2009 4:03 pm

Yayyyy!! I’m so happy your taste buds woke up! :)

    1. study for the GRE AT LEAST once each day until I take it next friday! ahh!

    2. Newman’s Own Light Balsamic Vinaigrette

    3. Sadly my family is a “go to the doctor and medicate yourself until you feel better/the meds are gone” type

I’ve heard of neti pots and they freaked me out, but thanks for showing us what they are like in action!

  3. July 20, 2009 4:25 pm

yay for your taste buds returning.
Oh goodness that picture with the water coming out of the other nostril cracks me up!! too funny.

HAHAHAHAHA I almost died reading this post. those pictures are HILARIOUS.

um I love watermelon babies. end of story

personal goal? hmmmm I like yours! I’m gonna drink a BUTTLOAD of water everyday

we don’t have any cool remedies. just to bitch at eachother haha

  5. July 20, 2009 5:50 pm

YES. i love this post, lady!! I have tried the netti pot, too and it is definitely weird at first!!

Well, whatever got you feeling better, I’m glad it did!

  6. July 20, 2009 6:28 pm

I <3 the Neti Pot – though I don't use it nearly as often as I should. You really should do it once a day even when you're NOT sick! And its not really medicine that goes in, its just salt & water to draw out the moisture :)

glad you can taste again and feel better – your mom's reaction to the brew is HILIARIOUS!!! she's super cute!

    1. what is your personal goal for the week? drink 80 oz water daily. (and actually stick to my workout plan for the week)

    2. favorite salad dressssing? I don't use dressing – filled with too much junk – but if I want something I will use oil & viinegar

    3. do you or anyone in your family have some gnarly home remedies you use to cure/fix something?? Not really other than Jewish Penicillian – MATZAH BALL SOUP – I swear to god it cures anything! Back in May I got real sick and took off work and hubby was off too, and by the end of the night I was begging for some even tho it had chicken stock in it – I ate the entire container – broth, matzah balls, noodles, chicken, spices and carrots – yum yum yum!!!!

  7. July 20, 2009 6:28 pm

oh, i sent you an email earlier thismorning……

  8. July 20, 2009 6:36 pm

Thank heaven your sense of taste is back! That would drive me INSANE.

    1. personal goal: better sleep schedule
    2. fave salad dressing: honey mustard without a doubt
    3. no funny home remedies, papa is a doctor, so i just get medicines!

  9. July 20, 2009 6:45 pm

Deck the halls with boughs of holly! It is a christmas miracle! So glad you got your buds back lady.

That egg scramble looks pretty baller to me. Don’t you hate it when people say sh*t like that?! Sorry, it makes me cross. It’s like when people act like I am clinically insane for enjoying running. Gah.

HP Sauce is kind of (but not really) like steak sauce. That’s the closest I can get but it’s fruitier and goes on bacon sandwiches, bangers and mash and cheese on toast. Annnnnd now I’m home sick.

I really enjoyed your step-by-step nose watering by the way. Necessary and hilarious both.

    1. personal goal: do not die during 10K
    2. fave salad dressing: annie’s honey mustard vinegairette.
    3. nopes

  10. July 20, 2009 6:59 pm

Purple steamed cauliflower? That’s what I like to hear!!

YAY for getting your taste back!! No lies, that netti pot kind of freaks me out! I’d probably breath the whole pot in and then choke.

    1. Ahhh I don’t know – I can’t think on the spot, I get flustered!
    2. Poppyseed is always good but I’m not a big dressing girl. I like salsa :)
    3. No family secrets unfortunately!

  11. July 20, 2009 7:28 pm

Ahhhh!!! YAY for having your taste back!! Those netti pot pics are too funny. I saw that crazy contraption on Oprah, it scares the bejeebus out of me.

    1. To make it through to Thursday – the start of my “weekend”!
    2. Balsamic vinegar and maple syrup.
    3. My mom used to give me shots of vodka to clear my sinuses. I wish that were a lie…

  12. July 20, 2009 7:31 pm

    YAY for tasting!!

Hub uses the neti pot. Kinda creeps me out.

    1. Mend my purple sweater.

    2. I’ve always been a homemade dressing girl. My favorite, simple blend is hot sauce, Bragg’s, and apple cider vinegar.

    3. Hm. Can’t think of any? My dad always gave me a spoonful of honey or some brandy when I had a sore throat, but that’s not so gnarly. Oh, and he used to give me cod liver oil too, and I would pretend to like it because I wanted to be cool like him.

  13. July 20, 2009 8:26 pm

I 1million percent swear by Mucinex…even for my very worst sinus troubles. It’s a miracle worker. I cannot believe you’ve gone 10 days and HADN’T had Mucinex yet. I had assumed you had.

Silly Janetha. Erin’s going to monitor your ailments now and make sure you are a good girl.

Thank goodness for taste right! Yay!

  14. July 20, 2009 8:45 pm

Hallelujah! And hahaha the nettipot pictures are hilarious. I also love the reactions to the brew–that thang looked NASTAY! haha! Your scramble looks delish, and so glad you could taste it :D

    1) Get to Arizona safely and deal with changing my major!

    2) I looove Annie’s Island Marinade as a salad dressing.

    3) Nope, thank goodness!

  15. July 20, 2009 10:51 pm

yay yay yay! so happy for you :D that neti pot looks interesting!

    1. what is your personal goal for the week? if you don’t have one.. make one now in your comment :) to turn up to everything I am supposed to… ;)

    2. favorite salad dressssing? tzatziki! does that count?

    3. do you or anyone in your family have some gnarly home remedies you use to cure/fix something?? my mom’s chicken soup…cures everything!

    1. eat everything in my fridge before i leave for the weekend!
    2. balsamic vinegar…that’s not really a dressing i guess but i love it!
    3. my mom’s an acupuncturist so we would always get treatments…moxa, needles, the whole bit

  18. July 21, 2009 12:34 am

Right before I read your boss’ comment I was thinking about how delicious that scramble looked!!! Ha ha….

But woooop! I’m glad your taste is backkkk!!! And girl, you look GREAT for having been sick for so long. When i’m sick, my nose and face become one big dried out mess. It’s REALLY attractive, i’m tellin’ ya. :)

  21. July 21, 2009 1:54 am

Oh shoooot, I forgot to answer your q’s!

    1. Personal goal=complete back to school to-do list! There’s a lot to get/organize/prepare/plan before heading back to school in 3 weeks!

    2. Annie’s Woodstock and Goddess are the best!

    3. Nothin’ gnarly, but my dad always sets me up with a bag of grapefruit/oranges when i’m sick. When i was little he’d be like, “eat this whole bag of fruit over the next day or 2″….and by then my sinuses would be cleared! Thank you vitamin C and rest!

    1. Start packing!

    2. My favorite dressing is… this sweet tomato vinaigrette that this restaurant down in Florida makes.

    3. I swear by honey heated up for like 7 seconds for sore throats. And green tea… lots of it!
