i have officially been to foodie hell.

July 19, 2009

hey dudettes! hope you are all having a fantastic weekend and a relaxing sunday.  i just popped two batches of blueberry banana vegan muffins in the oven and am now about to tell you about the hell i experienced last night!

first let’s talk about the food i ate all day long, or the lack there of…

SATURDAY!

meals_thumb

well i couldn’t taste still so i figured i would drink my hunger away..

no, not with a bloody mary! with a chocolate protein shake made with EAS triple blend protein powder, unsweetened vanilla almond breeze and this guy:

7-18-09 001

the amazing folks at amazing grass sent me a slew of their products to sample, but i have not tried any of them because of my lack of taste. i saw that the package boasts it boosts the immune system so i decided to add it to my shake. luckily i have 2 packets of each sample so i can do a taste test and review of it later, because honestly i could not taste this one bit

7-18-09 003

i bet it was good. at least it made me full.

7-18-09 004

although i couldn’t taste, i felt like chewing something.. so i went for this..

no, not chewing tobacco.. a slice of sunflower wheat bread with my mom’s raspberry jam

7-18-09 006

remembered to photograph it before i ate it all.

then i went to the mall for some retail therapy. i went to forever XXI and fondly thought of em who just landed a managing position at her forever, congrats girl!

i got 3 dresses, a pair of shorts and some loot from victoria’s secret.

then i decided that working out might be a good idea. i wanted to run but it was too hot to do it outside:

7-18-09 005

gah! waaaay too hot!!!!!! so i went to the treadmill

after the gym i had some more food i couldn’t taste:

7-18-09 008 7-18-09 007

and another protein shake

7-18-09 009

well then my good friend called me and he holds down all the fish slangin in the SLC.  he works at this fish market which supplies all the fresh fish to the dank spots in the city.  there is a new restaurant opening soon called forage and he is their fish vendor.  they invited him to a private food tasting thang last night.  he asked me to be his date, as long as marshall wouldn’t beat him up.  i told him marshall was in denver so he was safe! (ha.. he was joking, marshall loves him)

so i told him that i had no sense of taste.. but i would be down to go anyway.

this, my friends, is what foodie hell is.  i lived it.  it was horrible.  i was presented with round after round of immaculate food and i couldn’t taste a single bit of it!  cody told me how amazing it was all the while.. saying things like “this is the best thing that has ever entered my mouth!”.. ugh.

i will show you what i ate anyway, because it is gorgeous!

the way it went down is we ordered off a 3 course menu and then in between the courses they would bring us “bites from the kitchen” to taste, things that will be on the menu when they open i am sure.

7-18-09 010

they first brought out an egg truffle with maple syrup glaze and whipped vinegar cream served in an egg shell, so adorable

7-18-09 015

7-18-09 016

7-18-09 017

and then they brought out a radish crouquette that was piping hot and gooey on the inside. i hear it tasted amazing.

7-18-09 018

they brought us some sourdough bread

7-18-09 019

my first course was the vegetable garden

7-18-09 011

7-18-09 021

and cody went with the sea scallops with black truffle puree and coffee

7-18-09 020

haha.. he is not the foodie photographer than i would have liked him to be. but he tried!

for the main course we both got the halibut, artichoke, fennel & lemon brown butter7-18-09 012

7-18-09 022

but for kicks they also brought out the strip loin for us to try

7-18-09 023

again, i am sure it was soo good!

as a pre-dessert they brought some 12 month old aged wisconsin cheese and it was to be eaten with honey oat wheat bread.. fancy

7-18-09 027

7-18-09 030

do you like cody’s sophisticated attire? mind you, t was 102 degrees. he doesn’t care!

another pre-dessert was a blackberry sorbet with chocolate and coconut reductions

7-18-09 034

and then for the actual dessert we both went with the passion fruit soup with compressed watermelon and vanilla cake

7-18-09 014

7-18-09 035

the texture of the compressed watermelon was out of this world!! i wish i could have tasted it!

7-18-09 037

and then they brought us a final treat of a macaroon with strawberry cream

7-18-09 039

sigh. wasn’t that a GORGEOUS meal?! i bet it was amaaaazing!  and the thing is i am not sure if i will be going back when i can taste because just the 3 course meal (the vegetable garden, halibut & passion fruit soup) was $45.. um. i mean, i am all about nice, delicious food.  but that is the type of place you eat, pay over $100 for the two of you and then wonder why you are still hungry.  ya know? but it was absolutely stunning.. i just wish i could have tasted it!

after the dinner we went out to the bar with some friends and then i stopped by a house warming party on my way home, here are a few party photos..

7-18-09 067

7-18-09 052

i am so short.

7-18-09 057

i went home and hung out with the puppers

7-18-09 069

apparently randy thinks he is a cat and can fit on the top of the couch (don’t you love our retro couches? be jealous.. they are that fake velvet fabric)

7-18-09 050

he is sooo cute. so cute. i love him.

well all i have had to eat drink today is:

7-18-09 047

OJ

and a protein shake

7-18-09 053

i am just going to survive off of these, they give me all my nutrients and i don’t have to bother with cooking since i can’t taste anyway!

to answer some questions regarding my tasters and sickness.. i can’t taste because i am still a little sick, i got sick on july 7th after running my race.. it was a sinus infection and the effects are lingering. i haven’t been able to taste for NINE DAYS now.  yeah, i have had my tonsils out (may 5th of this year) and i thought that would prevent me from getting sick, but apparently not. i am hoping to get my taste back soon, I AM GOING INSANE! and we have a work party tomorrow, lots of good food i won’t be able to taste once again!

i just saw PB&Co featured on the travel channel. they have so many peanut butter sandwich variations!! BACON?!

marshall rolled in from denver at about 9 AM this morning, he drove straight through the night, so i am going to go try to poke him a few times and wake him up so we can go to the pool!

enjoy the last few hours of your weekends everybody :D

questions:

1. favorite cardio equipment at the gym? i have a love/hate relationship with the stair mill :)

2. what is your favorite peanut butter sandwich creation? i like crunchy PB, homemade raspberry jam & bananas on honey wheat bread grilled to perfection

Oy Janetha… That’s rough :( No consolation but I couldn’t taste any of that fab stuff either. If I ever come visit you in Utah, I promise to take you there. If we are still hungry, we’ll take the muffin routs. I wish I could send you some tastebuds!

    1. favorite cardio equipment at the gym? I don’t go to the gym! Breakdancing aaaaall the way.

    2. what is your favorite peanut butter sandwich creation? Oh, tough one. Peanut butter, banana and nutella grilled is pretty good!

  2. July 19, 2009 3:00 pm

I’m so sorry you are STILL in foodie hell!! That is ridic girl, I’m just glad you are being diligent and getting your nutrients in with those shakes…which actually sound kind of refreshing to me…it’s HOT here too :)

    1. I’m a spin class addict, but when I’m at school me and the elliptical stay well-acquainted ;)

    2. I’ve never gone truly experimental with pb sandwiches, but I guess I love pb toast topped with bananas, jelly, and cinnamon!

  3. July 19, 2009 3:27 pm

Oh girl. GIRL. You need to get to the doctors asap and have them zap in some new t-buds for real. I got kind of depressed reading your foodie hell story. I’ve never lost my sense of taste…cannot imagine the frustration!

Ugh as if it’s 105 degrees there. Yuck. I used to live in Austin, TX so I know how that goes. I spent 8 hours a day in water or en route to water!

I love you because I too could live off of bread, cereal and ice cream solely! Maybe throw in some choc and pasta (not together, ewww) and I’d be set. I’m gonna have to eat more of that bread later and it’s funna be good.

Yeah, totally not surprised you don’t eat normal yog – I don’t know if I can go back now. Why would I??? Why???? Agreeing with you on the plain choice as well – I do love me a bit of flava flave in a yogurt but the plain is so good for you and such a good base. I’m well excited about welcoming greek into my life.

I’m pretty sure you shouldn’t be worried about the sleep thing. I am so majorly jealous. That’s what I used to be like. I think it’s partly cos my boy’s an early riser so I’m always getting woken up by the git. Gr.

Nice party pics…I should’ve taken my camera last night but I gave myself the night off. Your hair is super beautiful. I love it. Also, I am jealous of your sofa. But be jealous of THIS: when my friends come to stay from england our landlord rents them a studio in our building and the couch material is DENIM. It looks like a pair of jeans. Yeah.

    Ok q’s…
    1. I pretty much hate the gym forever. I like classes though so I guess dumbbells and steps.
    2. mushed banana, PB, nutella, toasted.

Glad you got some retail therapy in…I need to do that soon. xx

  4. July 19, 2009 3:28 pm

WOAH. That was long. Sorry for dominating the comments…

  5. July 19, 2009 3:49 pm

That is an interesting place you all went for lunch – the food does look pretty good.

LOVED the house warming party pics.

    Your pups are so cute!!!

Have fun at the pool – ahhh – that is what we should be doing – it’s so hot!

Hope you feel better and get your taste buds back soon. If you nose is stuffy, then you should seriously consider a Neti Pot – it works wonders. You can learn a little bit about it on my blog if you search it :)

    Take care girlie.

  6. July 19, 2009 4:03 pm

I’m just gonna come out and say that all that food looks AWFUL and I bet you weren’t missing out.

Okay, that’s a fib. I hope you’re taste is back tomorrow!! Have you thought about seeing the doc if it continues? Nine days is a long ass time…

I want your basset hound. So. Flippin. Cute.

Ohyes, 1) treadmill. I like the spin bike, but only for a spin class.

    2) Crunchy PB with honey. It’s what my dad always used to make for our lunches, so it brings me back :)

Hope you got some relaxing in by the pool!

  7. July 19, 2009 4:37 pm

Randy is WAY too funny!!! Haha!! I do like your couch! It looks identical to one that we had at home when I was a teenager and it was MY FAVORITE couch ever. I don’t remember what happened to it. Anyway, I seriously feel so bad for you :-( Eating all that amazing food with no taste. I was giggling at all your comments until I got to the part where I read the menu. NO WAY. I’m sending you lots of healing vibes! I can’t wait for you to get your sense of taste back!!!

  8. July 19, 2009 5:03 pm

Girl, I am SO sorry this has been going on for so long! And that choc. amazing grass was my fave, too–so sad you couldn’t taste it :( Lets hope it cures you!

man that food at forage looks delish. I hope you can go back when you have taste buds again! That does sound like foodie hell :(

    1) Arc trainer for sure!

    2) Wheat bread, dark chocolate dreams, and banana slices. Yum!

  9. July 19, 2009 5:40 pm

Hey! I just stumbled across your blog, it’s lovely! I’ll be stopping by here often. :-)

  10. July 19, 2009 5:41 pm

I haate not being able to taste–it makes me extremely furious! Ha ha. But then when I can taste again it makes me savor(and appreciate!)every bite 10x more! And that meal looks stunning–I have never spent that much money on a restaurant meal, it’s on my list of things to do one day soon..just for fun! :o)

  11. July 19, 2009 6:03 pm

oh that is food hell!!! i hope you regain taste again soon….what does your doc say?

i love the elliptical. and pb and jelly on an eggo waffle – i could eat it forever!!!

  12. July 19, 2009 6:05 pm

Where is your taste?! This is no good :( There are too many good food holidays coming up!

    1. I haven’t done cardio at the gym in forever! I am blessed to live in a land of perfect outdoor running weather.

    2. Hm, I like pb sandwiched in between two banana halves. Old school, and simple.

I think if I couldn’t taste that would be a blessing…I only eat so darn much because I crave tastes constantly and eat and eat until I find one that satisfies me!!! That is a true curse for my tummy!!! :)

I luuurve the treadmill (although you can’t beat a bit of open air running!!) and the stair stepper thinga me bob!!! (Can not abide cross trainers though…what IS that all about!!??)

Not really a very unique invention…but at the mo I am totally addicted to Toast with PB, banana, greek yogurt and blueberrys with a little honey drizzled on top!!! Oh and you can’t beat PB and honey on toast put back under the grill so the honey all soaks in!!! Delish!!!

Good luck on finding your tastebuds sometime soon!!! :)

  14. July 19, 2009 6:16 pm

Please tell me you went to the doc and got antibiotics? A sinus infection is bacterial and WILL respond to the meds. You need to get better honey. I am suffering, virtually, for you. :(

  15. July 19, 2009 7:40 pm

Oh my gosh… WHY is it that an opportunity like that, to taste all kinds of wonderful delicacies, would come around when you can’t taste at all? You poor poor thing. That IS foodie hell to the extreme. I would probably have cried. I hope you get your taste back asap!

1.I don’t go to the gym so the only cardio equipment I ever use is my treadmill!

    2. I’m also not very experimental with pb sammies but I do love a toasted pb, banana, honey combo. mmmmm.

  16. July 19, 2009 7:46 pm

awww I’m sorry you’re still not feeling well or tasting anything! :(
The macaroon looks AWESOME and your whole meal looks great as well.
and still working out- props! i often feel better after working out when sick – sweat out all the toxins ! :)

I love drinking protein shakes out of beer steins–they make feel fuller for some reason…
Fave PB sammie is probably not a sandwich at all: a banana boat (aka banana in a hot dog bun) drizzled with PB & agave nectar.

  19. July 19, 2009 11:53 pm

oh you poor poor girl! That is foodie hell indeed! But at least it was visually pleasing! And you can imagine how it tasted like…but oh, I feel so sorry I just wanna give you a tight HUG! *HUGGSSS*

Don’t like working out in gyms, I prefer to run outdoors! And I love a PB sandwich with bacon and maple syrup, grilled on brioche!

Aw Janetha :( I’m sorry. I’m just going to say that it probably tasted like crap and it’s a good thing you couldnt taste anything hehe. Did that help?

Those party pics.. Ahhh I’m moving into my new place soon and I have no idea what we’re gonna do. I’m just excited to decorate.

I saw the PB&Co feature on that channel as well!!!

    1. The stairmaster
    2. Hmmm… I like PB + bananas and honey grilled together in yummy bread.

  21. July 20, 2009 12:17 am

I’m sorry! Not being able to taste… :/ On a side note, I bought my first jar of PB&Co today and I’m off to try it! :D I like the elliptical and peanut butter with chocolate pressed in my panini maker. Yum.

THE HORROR, THE HUMANITY! Why must God be so so cruel as to taunt us with the goodness of food while being imparied in our taste… I CAN TAKE NO MORE! Goodbye, cruel world *exit stage left*
Dramatic perhaps, but completely worthy of your situation… only Shakespearian drama could come close to expressing the suffering a foodie goes through when being robbed of their sense of taste, but being brought to an amazing restaurant too: “Hath anyone ever suffered such a cruel fate? I think not”.
    Janetha, I sympathise with you…

On a brighter note: fave cardio is spinning and fav PB creaton is jar of PB with a spoon… (what can I say, I’m creative…)

Love you, hope you can taste again soon! <3

  23. July 20, 2009 6:13 am

The incline treadmill is my go-to! OMG that food looks amazing, you have got to get a rain check on that- ha even though you already went!

  24. July 20, 2009 7:38 am

I am so sorry you are still not feeling better :(
Favorite cardio piece is definitely the treadmill. Well, it’s kind of love/hate like you with the stepmill. And with PBJ, I think I am boring! I just like basic PBJ, although with the white choc wonderful it’s really amazing. With Raspberry jam. On wholewheat. With a glass of milk :)

  25. July 20, 2009 7:49 am

Retail therapy is ALLLLLLWAYS nice! Holy hell, that is one HOT day and you are the MASTER runner of the tread!

Not being able to taste that meal is just not fair! I totally agree though, if something is that expensive it better get the job done in the stomach department!

Is that a dress or a top?! Either way it’s CUTE!! I like! BB lays on the back of our ‘lay-z-boy’ish chair and once he fell off – HAHAHA!!

    1. Lately the treadmill has been my main squeeze
    2. I’m a puritan with the PB – I like PBJ or PB&honey :D

  26. July 20, 2009 7:50 am

awww the shoutout just made my day and put a huge smile on my face. You are too sweet :) Sounds like you racked up too…Im about to go there today to get some cute clothes for my first week of work…I have to look STYLIN’.

My fave cardio machine is the treadmill or the eliptical, those are the only ones I really use. My fave PB creation is peanut butter, cinnamon, raisins, and banana…grilled! YUM!

Hope your monday is going great dear and hurry up and get that taste back, Im sick of you being sick!! haha. <333

  27. July 20, 2009 8:59 am

totes FOODIE HELL! but how friggin gorge is that spread? you still look classy even if you can’t taste the class in all that food :) haha, did that even make sense? it’s monday morn – please excuse me!

i hope you feel better soon! that top you are wearing is ador – where did you get it? i think i would die in 102 degree heat.

    fave machine? probs elliptical.

PB? mmmm…the possibilities are truly endless. most likely straight up PB+banana. you just CAN’T go wrong. i still need to try grilling it though. much love to you girl – happy monday!

Favorite pb sandwich is probably tons of peanut butter and blueberries!
