i’ll trade my left hand to have my sense of taste back.

July 18, 2009

sounds like a deal to be made with the devil.

you guys. i’m going craaaaaaaaaazy!! no like really, i thought my taste was coming back but today it decided to do a disappearing act again all day except for one meal, which was lunch, but by the time 3 PM came any bit of tasting ability was gone again.

i suppose i will tell you what i ate, even thought i couldn’t taste it.

THURSDAY!

so let’s see how the rest of my day yesterday looked, i can’t remember:

meals 183

times these grapes by about seventeen. no really.

oikos, PB2, cereal mess

meals 184

meals 185

i bet this tasted good!

ummmmm… i think i took a nap? yeah i did, because marshall walked into my house and woke me up on the couch and i had no idea if it was morning or night or what day it was or if i was supposed to be at work. i panicked slightly.

i ended up thinking i might be able to taste fuji+ naturally more PB

meals 186

no such luck.

i had a few other unpictured items not worth talking about since i couldn’t taste them. i think i went a little insane because i started tasting everything around me to see if i could taste it. and i couldn’t taste any of it. and i wasn’t even hungry, but i became obsessed with trying to taste. and i ate a whole lot more than i should have. shoot.

then marshall and i watched the latest episode of true blood and i went to bed WAY past my bedtime, again.

FRIDAY!

breakfast=chocolate protein oats

meals 187

okay, couldn’t taste this. can you tell i am really a bit ornery from the whole not being able to taste issue? because i am.. it is irritating and talking about food isn’t even fun when you can’t taste it. sorry to be such a negative nancy.

so that brings me to the one thing i could taste today, AND IT WAS AMAZING! i think i have a new favorite combo!  it came about because i just needed to use up some stuff in the work fridge.. this is how it went down:

cottage cheese+garbanzo beans+ a little hidden valley ranch seasoning

ranch

equals lunch!

meals 190

you guys! this WAS SO FREAKING DELICIOUS!  i don’t know if it was because i could actually taste it or if it is just genius, probably both.. but how simple is that 3 ingredient lunch? and it has protein and carbs and fiber and is fabulous. i dare you to try it.

meals 193

i also had some veggies & hummus

meals 192

polished off the last of the hummus, i am going to make my own in my new food processor!

guess what i did after work? well, first i ate some food i couldn’t taste..

oikos+peach+cinnamon

meals 195 meals 194

and a bowl of unphotographed mixed cereal. and a graham cracker square. and a slice of bread. and a calcium chew. i couldn’t taste any of it.

then i took a 4 hour nap.

and then i woke up, had 1/2 a turkey, cheese & mustard sandwich on wheat.. couldn’t taste it.

my bestieeee kristen moved back home from arizona! she has lived there the past couple years, she is going to PT school. i am sooo glad she is back! i went to see her apartment and we went to hires for ice cream

WHY. WHYYYY. WHY?! why did i get ice cream if i couldn’t taste it?! i would like to know where in my sick mind i decided it would be a good idea to stuff my face with an oreo shake when i couldn’t taste it in the least bit.

meals 196

sigh. whatever. i ate it.

now i am home.

this post is a downer! i probably should not even have written it.. haha.. sorry kids. just one of those days! but on the upside i am blogging with penelope jane on my lap and randall bernard to my left. dogs make everything better. and my roommates are home eating popcorn doused in cock sauce. i am not going to try my luck at tasting it.

but it is good that i posted because i did need to share my fabulous new favorite concoction of garbanzos+cottage cheese+ranch.. i need to think of a name for it because i see lots and lots of this mixture in my future!

in other news!~~

today’s natalie dee comic describes me to a T.. i had to post it:

here-she-comes-to-save-the-day-or-the-day-after-tomorrow

i wonder if i will fold my 7 tons of clean laundry tomorrow? or maybe sunday???

marshall is out of town this weekend, it is a good reason to catch up on sleep get things done.

questions:

1. gimme your hummus recipe. i need a good one to make this weekend!!

ok, not really a question but i know you hummus makers out there have some good recipes up your sleeve!

2. have a simple, delicious 2 or 3 ingredient dish? what is it?

my new fave is obv the one i talked about above! sometimes the simplest things taste the best!

3. favorite yogurt mix in?

i am torn between peaches, PB2 and cereal. indecisiveness at it’s best!

the questions may be equally as lame as this post, oh well… ya win some ya lose some! everyone send my taste buds good vibes and hope that they work tomorrow!

Aww…that sucks :( I hope you feel better soon- do you *feel* sick or is it just lack of tastebuds? :( The chickpea dish sounds awesome!

    1. gimme your hummus recipe. i need a good one to make this weekend!! Not a recipe, but I tried a killer hummus not long ago that was regular hummus mixed with whole chickpeas and topped with toasted pinenuts.

    2. have a simple, delicious 2 or 3 ingredient dish? what is it? does bread + peanut butter count? If not, I’m going with spinach + ricotta tortellini mixed with chopped canned tomatoes and light mayo (just mix sauce until pink, mix with cooked tortellini and serve cold as a salad).

    • July 18, 2009 1:40 am

yeah ellie i feel sick too! my throat doesn’t hurt anymore but i have lung butter for days and my nose is running like a faucet. appealing, right?

  2. July 18, 2009 1:38 am

ooops- yogurt mix-in favourites would be graham crackers + raisins or granola. Or muesli. Or banana…ack, too many possibilities. Everything tastes great in yogurt!

  3. July 18, 2009 6:08 am

Aww, that sucks about your taste :( Is it just cause you’re sick? If so, I prescribe you to skip True Blood tonight and get lots of sleep woman!! (I put my stern face on, I mean business :P )

I still loved this post, that cottage cheese-chickpea mix look amaaaazing. I’m going to experiment with that. I think it sounds genius!

Questions: 1) can of chickpeas, 1 tbsp tahini, 2 tbsp plain yogurt, 1 clove garlic, 1-2 tbsp lemon juice, 1/2 tbsp cumin, pepper. That’s my easy hummus base I use for everything. But you can experiment with nut butters, throw in roasted red pepper, sundried tomatoes, olives, spinach, and all the other random things you can think of.

    2) Ummm, eggs on toast with a piece of fruit? That’s what I usually gravitate towards when I want something super quick and takes little effort.

    3) Now this is hard. Any fruit tastes awesome in yogurt. I guess maybe strawberries top my list. But I like cottage cheese or granola in there too :)

  4. July 18, 2009 6:57 am

    google restuarant style hummus.
i have 2 cans of garbanzos in my cabinet that need to be used so i plan to whip up some next week :)

    the basics:

    garbanzos
    garlic – lots of it
    dash of cumin
    paprika for garnish
    tahini
olive oil – lots of it
    2 lemons

reserve garbanzo “juice” to use as your “water” in recipes

i’m still searching for the best recipe! i wish one of those lebanese restaurants would share their secret to warm, creamy hummus!!!! ugh!!! i guess lots of oil?!?! i’ll post whatever “recipe/idea” i use next week after I grocery shop an dget some lemons

  5. July 18, 2009 6:59 am

making your own hummus really IS a money saver – whie I know a jar of tahini is expensive, like $10-15 – it should last a while and making your own hummus you get so.much.more for the buck! you could probably even try to replicated roasted red pepper sabra by picking up some roasted red peppers from trader Joe’s and whatever else is listed in ingredients on container and trying to replicate :) in fact, i do have a jar of roasted red peppers here….hmmm might have to be my 2nd batch of hummus!

  6. July 18, 2009 7:00 am

    Woot- True Blood!!!!
Good luck being able to taste stuff again :(
MY favorite yogurt mix in is probably strawberries or dark chocolate chips. Or maybe even coconut butter! All 3 together is heaven!
    -Muffy

  7. July 18, 2009 7:51 am

def google it, i didn’t have tahini so i used EVOO, it worked fine and i didn’t want to be stuck with a buttload of tahini i wouldnt use :D

  8. July 18, 2009 7:52 am

Aw girl, I hope you get your tastebuds back soon! That’s just crazy. I’d be so mad, too.

My favorite yogurt mix-in is banana slices, cinnamon, peanut butter on the spoon, and unsweetened cocoa powder! Oh, and honey kix. Yum!

  9. July 18, 2009 8:40 am

Ugh not being able to taste all your delicious food is the worst!! Cool idea with the Ranch seasoning though.

    I can’t help with the first 2, but…

    3. Greek yogurt MUST have fruit as a mix-in, plain yogurt is best with cereal…haha I’m picky. Regardless, cinnamon is a must when it comes to yogurt for me.

Gurlll a food blogger without taste is like a geek with no braces! You better get on that taste train again ASAP!

My favorite yogurt mix in would either be cereal or banana…or cinnamon?! DAMNIT Janetha there you go asking those questions that I can’t answer with just one solid thing!

Hope your having a great weekend dear <33

    I hope you feel better!

I don’t have an exact hummus recipe usually I just throw these ingredients in the food processor: garbanzo beans, olive oil, jalapenos, cayenne pepper, black pepper, and some water!

  12. July 18, 2009 9:25 am

Your chickpeas+cottage cheese+ranch trifecta is a protein powerhouse and I LOVE IT!

YAY for PTs!!! ;) I hope you get your taste back – that is a horrible condition to experience!

I’m no help with question 1 or 2 BUT my favorite yogurt mix ins? Vitatops, PB2, Kashi Crunch, cinnamon…I think that’s it.

  13. July 18, 2009 9:45 am

Sorry about your lack of taste, I’d be pretty pissed too. I’m glad you’re still posting about it all though!

    1) sorry no hummus recipe – I leave it to the pros

    2) fave simple dish is either baked sweet potato wedges topped with avocado or a banana cut into rounds and topped with nut butter and carob chips

    3) my greek yogurt must have some sort of chewy topping – crumbled z-bars are the best but kashi go lean is awesome too, esp if you mix it up and let it get a little soft…..mmmmm!

  14. July 18, 2009 10:19 am

Sorry you’re still feeling pants and that it’s causing you to be a major debbie downer….JK!

Seriously, get those taste buds back! I can’t think of anything worse. Ugh. Feeling v sorry for you love.

    q1 I can’t answer.
q2 needs some serious thought but since I just ate bacon I’ll go with sauteed spinach, bacon and garlic.
    q3…mos def yog and muesli.

Oh and that couscous dish is originally made with cauliflower and almonds…so I’d go with that. Happy for you that your bestie is home. I wish mine would move here!

  15. July 18, 2009 11:10 am

wow that cottage cheese mixture is just mind-boggling. I never would have thought of that combo, but I’l take your word for it that it is delish!

Fav yogurt mix-in: peanut butter, fruits, mochi, cinnamon…

  16. July 18, 2009 1:16 pm

Ugh, I’m sorry you can’t taste anything right now! I would be a downer, too!

I will definitely be trying that 3 recipe lunch!! It looks delish.

i love peanut butter and granola in my yogurt…

  19. July 18, 2009 5:06 pm

Hon. Is this remnant of you being sick a bit ago? Still having sinus issues? If not, go to a doc cuz this isn’t cool.

I’m definitely going to try the Ranch/garbanzo bean/cot. cheese recipe! I hate not being able to taste! I always end up eating REALLY RICH foods or SOUR food just so that I taste something. Hope you get your taste buds wake up soon!

  26. July 19, 2009 6:37 am

Janetha–LOVE the cottage cheese and garbanzo bean mix! I used to eat that all the time minus the ranch and plus some pineapple mango salsa. Try that one one for size sometime. You should mix up some of Gena’s raw zucchini hummus. I made it on my blog a while back, and suggest some adjustments, but it was so so good! Hopefully you will get your tasties back soon :(

  27. July 19, 2009 8:18 am

Awww. I hope you have many taste filled days coming soon in your future!!! That comic is WAY too funny!!!! You are so right about dogs making everything better. I love how when I’m having a really bad day or crying my dog knows to be really really sweet. She saves her misbehaving for when I’m in a good mood ;-)

  28. July 19, 2009 10:41 am

hope you are feeling better today! i love that you stayed up way too late to watch true blood…i do that, always!!

  29. July 19, 2009 1:52 pm

OMG!! I am totally trying that ranch/chickpea combo!! Genius.
I kind of suck with recipes but my favorite yogurt mix-in is Kashi GoLean Crunch!
