flashback friday.

August 7, 2009

i am copying my sister in law. she does flashback friday on her blog and i love it. feel free to scroll past the ramble to get to it.

first, let’s talk about feelings.  sorry~that is the name of a lagwagon album.  i couldn’t resist.  any old punk rock lagwagon fans out there?  ANYWAY, i did want to send a heartfelt thank you to everyone who commented on my last post.  i genuinely appreciate all of you!  i feel a lot better about things now.  i feel like this is something i can handle.  i will get over this both physically and mentally

your suggestions really helped.  also those of you who opened up about your own situations made me feel more comfortable about what i said.  i was weary of posting it at first but i think putting it in a post helped me realize a lot of things and face reality.  it helps to know several others know where i am coming from and have either been there or are there right now.  i am not alone

what i didn’t mention in the last post is that i am uncomfortable with my weight right now.  i am not one to be self conscious but right now i find myself looking in every mirror i see, i look down at my legs way too often, i don’t want my photo taken and i flat out don’t feel confident with myself.  that is no way to go about my daily life. quite frankly, it blows. just being honest.

i need to make some changes.  a few of you mentioned portion sizes and also random handfuls of snacks that go unnoticed and i think these two things are my issues.  i need to get back to basics.  i used to just eat oats with two ingredients: oats and protein powder.  yes, this is boring.  but it fills me up just fine.  adding peanut butter, bananas, jam, apples, peaches and whatever else to my oats was also adding more calories and carbs.. that i honestly didn’t need.. i was just doing it for the taste of it.  i like the plain old combo of protein powder and oats.  honestly.  when i started reading all the fabby oat combos on the blogs i started making my bowls of oats more extravagant and now i realize this was also packing on the pounds.  i will save the fancy oat bowls for the free days.

i eat too much hummus.  end of story :P

one more issue i have pinpointed is my hand goes into the cereal box way, way, waaaayyyy too much.  no more of this.  no excuses.

eating clean is a good thing, there is also such thing as TOO MUCH of a good thing.

i am slowly identifying all the issues that are making me more plump than i prefer.  and i will eliminate the issues and i will reach my full potential.  i just needed a little motivation, maybe trying those jeans on this morning was a good push??

sorry for rambling!

not many meals or moves to show you tonight.  well, perhaps a few~

<3 them.

well that was fun. probably more so for me than for you! but i always like seeing flash back photos of other people so feel free to post some flash backs on your own blog and let me know so i can check them out!!

oh and you may have guessed~no wendover! the boys just decided to play poker here.. so i am listening to them play while i blog.  i prefer this because i am beat from boating.  plus i have to save my energy for tramp camp tomorrow! yayer.

things to talk about/questions:

1. tell me about the best place you ate while on vacation! and do you eat whatevs when on a trip? when i go out of town one of my favorite things to do is try the local cuisine. i love trying new foods and experiencing the culture of the food side of things. when i am on a trip anything goes, chances are i will not be back to that restaurant ever so i always order what i want!

2. prior to food blogging, did you photograph your food or things you cooked/baked or meals when dining out or anything of the sort? seems like i always have done this, even back in the old film developing days!!

Okay, first I’m just going to say that no one wants to feel uncomfortable in their skin. So you gotta do what you gotta do. You’ll get there!!! I suggest sticking the cereal at the very top of your cupboard (or middle might work for you :P ). I just did this a few days ago and apparently my desire to munch on cereal isn’t so strong that I feel like getting a chair everytime I want a handful.

Love the flashbacks!!! I’ll have to get some old photos while I’m home and do something similar… Hmm, SO many good food places on vacation! I remember specific dishes more than anything, like bratwurst on freshly baked rolls in Germany, and this particurlar egg torta sandwich at a roadside cafe in Mexico. Oh! And this other place in Mexico owned by a family that would sell breakfast quesidillas by their pool in their backyard in the mornings. I always got one with cactus and potato :) And yes, I’ve always taken pictures of my food and drinks too. Guess I was a blogger before I even knew it! :P

    Hey Girl,
I am SO with you on your last two posts. I was in a bit of a different situation this summer with my eating, but my problems have boiled down to the same thing: TOO MUCH of a good thing.
I have gained weight as well, and just like you when I do, I lose confidence. And it is SO important to be comfortable about our bodies! With you as inspiration I have decided to start BFL as soon as September begins, so it will be interesting to see both of our journeys through your “mini challenge” and my full-on challenge! I’m done with camp so of course I’ll be back and blogging ASAP =)
    Good Luck!
    K

Great pictures!! I’m jealous of your awesome wakeboarding skills!

I think it’s perfectly ok that you wrote on the blog about your current feelings and challenge. This is your outlet and the rest of us are out here to keep you on track and be your motivation! :) I’m sure you’ll be just fine!

I love the flashback pics, that’s a great idea! Have a wonderful weekend!

  4. August 8, 2009 5:51 am

I just checked out your last post…and I know exactly what you mean, love! It is SO frustrating sometimes..our bodies are so EFFED up..and we can be doing ALL of the right things, plus a million things more, and things still dont go the way we want them to. MY ONE and ONLY solution for you: Drink more water. I dont know how much water you drink already, but water has always and always will be my number one solution for EVERYTHING.

    Love the friday flashback!!

sorry that i missed your previous post and low down feelings. I hope other gave you good tips and you figure out what to do to feel better (not just to weight less). Portion size and no-snacking is the key I think.
Love your flash back photos, so fun!!!

I do eat whatever it’s local on vacation…. you know, it’s part of the fun visiting another country.

I used to pic what I cook, but not everything I eat, so blogging made camera to be part of my daily life now! :)

    have a nice weekend!

  6. August 8, 2009 6:11 am

holy cow look at you kill it on the wakeboard! I think it’s also important to think about the things that your body does for you! Like get you up on that wakeboard! cuhrazed :) and your ma! awesome.

I’m a cereal box sucker too. A little hereee..a little there….and then I reach in and the box is empty! damn cereals.

    have a fabbbulous weekend!

  7. August 8, 2009 7:20 am

so sorry to hear about your current frustrations. it sounds like you have a pretty good idea about how to rectify the situation, and a positive attitude that you can do it, and that, my friend, is two thirds of the battle. roughly. I think. you can do it!!!

I don’t have any interesting answers to your questions. I will say that I love to eat locally wherever I go (which is not much of anywhere lately), but I’m still vegan, and while I prefer not to eat the soy and gluten, I loosen up a little on special occasions. Also, I’ve never been very good at documentation. I’m still not. Sadly.

love the flashbacks! and the wakeboarding action shots. your mom sounds hardcore.

happy zucchini day! I’m opting for zukes over frozen custard :) loves the zukes!

  8. August 8, 2009 7:21 am

Hahah before I saw that you linked to me with the Blue Moon picture I thought, “oooh is that a Blue Moon?!” ;) That stuff is like juice!

Look at you wake boarding!! Way to go! I love the flash back and the reflection – I know you’ll figure out what will work for you, no doubt in my mind :)

    1. tell me about the best place you ate while on vacation! and do you eat whatevs when on a trip? All of the food I had in Italy (including their ‘fast food’ aka street food) was insanely delicious! If you notice, I don’t eat much Italian food on my blog because since I’ve had the real deal I can’t justify having the butchered American version.

    2. prior to food blogging, did you photograph your food or things you cooked/baked or meals when dining out or anything of the sort? Only on vacations and only if it was something out of the ordinary

  9. August 8, 2009 7:26 am

I am 100% in agreement with there is such as thing as TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING. I realized this last night as I was heading to the kitchen for a bowl of cereal that wasn’t necessary, especially after I just had a bag of kettle corn.
There are healthy foods. And there are healthy eating patterns. I totally know that feeling of sticking my hand too far down into the cereal box. lol.

  12. August 8, 2009 8:43 am

The best place I ever ate while on vacation was probably Hotel Costes in Paris. Not because the food was out of this world, but because the whole place is out of this world. The best music ever, the best sexy atmosphere, and the whole place makes you feel so special!
I never took photos of my food before blogging, I like it but I keep forgetting to take pictures throughout the day.
Girl love how you can rip it on a wakeboard, I’ve always wanted to be able to do that, but I’m a ski racer and for some reason just can’t do wakeboarding. I can kneeboard though!!!
I’m glad your feeling better about your last post. You go girl and protein oats are the best!!!!! So is that black bean dip!

  13. August 8, 2009 9:31 am

Wakeboarding looks like so much fun!! Definitely an even trade off for an upper body workout!

I love your flashback pictures!! I think posting those are so much fun too! Maybe I’ll jump on that bandwagon!

  14. August 8, 2009 11:59 am

I love your flashbacks, and I also love your honesty! It is so easy for even the good things (hummus, whole grain foods, even fruits and vegs) to become too much. I’ve had to come to learn that it truly is EVERYTHING in moderation. I still have to remind myself – “hey, sure this is good for me, sure it tastes good, but you’re full – don’t keep eating!”. :)

  15. August 8, 2009 12:36 pm

No need to apologize for rambling! And I really love your honesty. I think it can be especially hard for us shorties, cause in general we just don’t NEED as many calories as taller people (we burn a lot less working out too cause there’s less mass to move and all). Yea, yea, there are exceptions for people with fast metabolisms, but since I’m 5’0 and pretty tiny, I don’t need as many calories/energy as someone who’s 5’8. It’s hard, cause the snacking and extra toppings in oatmeal and all can really bite us in the butt. At least, that’s been my experience. Good luck reaching your full potential, girl–I know you can do it!

Wakeboarding looks like a blast! The flashback shots are so fun, too.

good girl on pinpointing your “things.” we all have them and it can be easy to ignore them when they seem so small!!!!!! anyway, looks like you are having a blast! ive never been wakeboarding but it looks like so much fun :)

  18. August 8, 2009 1:14 pm

Flashback Friday is an awesome idea! Awesome pictures! I actually did take pictures of food before I started blogging; not quite sure what I was going to do with them… ;)

I love all the wakeboarding pictures; looks like an awesome time.

I know what you mean by being a bit too inspired by things you see on other blogs. I started adding all kinds of things to my oatmeal and it tasted great. But, yes, these “extra things” are not exactly calorie free. I also “discovered” dark chocolate with almond butter – soooo good! But, again, not calorie free.

    Have a good weekend!

  19. August 8, 2009 2:09 pm

I definitely have the exact same food/snack issues as you. I just finished handful dipping into the cereal boxes about an hour ago. And I dress up my foods WAY more than I need to just because it tastes better. I used to be good at keeping things much simpler. Back to the basics I guess! But heck, I like your attitude. If you can do it, I can do it. It’s not impossible to tell that darn cereal box NO right? I might have to yell at it and throw it across the room a couple times before it takes the hint though ;)

You’re one hardcore wakeboarding lady! I WISH I could do that. One of these days I seriously have to try it, it looks like a hoot!

I LOVE the flashback idea too. The pics are hilarious. Keep em coming!

    1. I so rarely go on vacation and it’s been so long since the last time I did that I can’t even think of a really good place I’ve eaten while on vacation.. how sad is that?!

    2. I definitely did do some food photographing pre blog days, just because i’ve always liked photography and snapping pics of random things. Food is PRETTY!

  20. August 8, 2009 3:13 pm

I just read your last post and girlie I still think you look beautiful :) but do what is best for you – if you feel that cleaner eating makes you feel better then go for it!!

For the oats, maybe you could scale down the portions – instead of 1/2 cup use a 1/3 and use almond milk? Just a suggestion just incase you want some fancy oats.

  21. August 8, 2009 6:19 pm

OMG pre-kids I use to wake board all. the. time. You are totally rocking that wake board lady. It is definitely a kick ass upper body workout!

  22. August 8, 2009 8:40 pm

mm i love lime tortilla chips! :)
    1. ummm fave place to eat on vacay was probably at the place we used to visit every summer as a kid. It was called bunker hill and they served down home cooked meals in a little school house type building. we stayed in cabins by the lake and they rang a bell when dinner was served :)
    2. i only photographed food maybe once, and it was a pretty cake I baked.

  23. August 8, 2009 11:03 pm

Ahh it’s crazy how I feel the SAME way as you. While no one would look at me as overweight (I don’t think), I just flat out don’t feel comfortable at all. My stomach feels uncomfortable, my arms & face feel swollen etc. And I keep telling myself to eat more “basic” rather than add on tons of “extras” (to oatmeal like you said!) to add on too many calories. And I’m ALWAYS picking at food (cereals included). We can do this!!

  24. August 8, 2009 11:06 pm

YOU ARE GORGEOUS! And I can’t believe you said you eat too much hummus….there is no such thing….. ;)

It’s true that you know your body best. I think self-acceptance is important, but you also know what your potential is as well. (You’re an awesome person already! :D) Certainly too much of even a good thing can turn into something not desired. I think finding a good balance for yourself is key. I wish you the best of luck! You’re a strong woman, and I know you have it in you to achieve whatever goals you pursue in life.

    1. Oh my.. let’s see. Best place I ate on vacation? It might have to be just some random stand in Colombia that made the best arepas de choclo!

  27. August 9, 2009 1:11 pm

I love a few lagwagon songs! I think I might have even seen them once at a Warped Tour, or maybe not… so many punk bands, and as much as I love punk music, a lot of it does sound the same. Funny, I keep finding all these music references on blogs today, and yesterday I posted about my Top 10 Running Songs of all time. I’m kind of in a rut, so I need some suggestions. Any good punk tunes that aren’t too fast to run to?

Wakeboarding looks awesome! I’ve tried it once or twice; I got up but didn’t last for too long. Certainly not long enough to get cool photos like yours!

  28. August 9, 2009 2:11 pm

Wow. i can relate to what you are saying to a tee. Fancy oatmeal bowls have gotten out of control, too much cereal, hummus, etc. You hit the nail on the board. I am going to clean up my eating with along with you, girl. :D

Hey girl! I just wanted to say that I think we can all relate to how you’ve been feeling. I find myself digging into the cereal box quuuite a few times per day these days, as well as overindulging in ice cream sundaes!!

I’m sure you can get back to feeling comfortable soon! I think I’ll take the challenge to clean up my eating as well. It always helps to have others along for the ride!

I studied in London for a semester and was obsessed with Wagamama! I forgot about it until your post.

  31. August 9, 2009 6:55 pm

you’re doing great, my dear Janetha! you’ve already got the first step down, which is eating clean and healthy, and that you actually enjoy it! how many people can boast of that? now you just gotta work on eating intuitively. That comes with a bit of practice, but it’s not impossible, and I know you can do it! The worst thing you can do is obsess and get upset over it, which is the complete opposite of intuitive eating!

Oh and LOVING the pics! I always feel like you’ll be such a great person to hang out with…you’re like the life of the party! :D

    Love this post!
You ladies are wakeboarding ROCKSTARS! Looks so so much fun!
Yay for flashbacks – how cute are you 3 years ago?! You look teeny-young. And thanks for the holler!!! The fish faces make me homesick. haha. As does getting caught in the rain since it’s practically a daily occurence there :)
Girl, do what you gotta do to get where you feel comfortable. I am with you 100%. Also, some stuff you said really chimed with me. I have been worrying since I started blogging that I might be gaining a little weight (haven’t checked the scales since starting the blog tho) because my eats have become way more elaborate. Oats is a big problem of mine too! All of a sudden I was inspired by all these amazing combos and couldn’t resist and now my morning bowl has nuts, fruit, nut butters, and everything else under the sun when it used to have a tea spoon of brown sugar. Hmm. It’s hard though because I want my eats to be/look/taste exciting but I do worry my waist line might suffer. So far, it’s feeling good but it does play on my mind. So, in a long winded way – I get it and support you.

I always try to eat local when on vacay. I was bummed I didn’t find any chicago deep dish this weekend! But my all-time fave was eating steak in Argentina – I gained about 10 pounds in 6 weeks (not actually joking) from eating so much red meat/white bread but it was the best culinary treat of my life and I loved every second!

    Heart ya
