spreading more organic love.

April 23, 2011

giveaway is closed, thanks for entering!

hey guys!

i know i have bombarded the blog with giveaways lately. i usually don’t like to do so many in a row.  i try to have a balance between meals, moves, random rambles, serious business, dogs, family, friends, product reviews, giveaways and meaningless riffraff… but when things like earth day roll around, there is a lot of organic-ness to be given away.  who am i to say no to giving away products from solid companies? that’s what i thought.  and the fact that i am hosting my own favorite things giveaway sponsored by myself just added to the whole jumble of giveaways. oh, and there are like 3 more coming up. hope you don’t mind, i will try to scale back sometime in june…

first things first, the winner of the nature’s path trio of goods is #60:

Faith @ lovelyascharged

I recycle all of my printed documents at the office and keep my own ceramic mug at my desk instead of using paper cups each time I run up for a coffee break!

congrats, faith! send me your mailing information.

Most of the produce I buy is organic (since most of it is the same price as conventional in my grocery store) and I buy organic meat when the weather is nice from our public market. Most yogurt I eat is organic too.

  9. April 23, 2011 7:10 am

I LOVE that video! Very clever and a cool way to get the CE-yo involved :) I eat as many organic foods as I can get at the grocery store! If they don’t have an organic option, I just get regular.

My favourite organic to buy is organic cherry tomatoes I eat them like candy so I make sure they’re organic! And I really do try to buy organic when possible.

I try to buy organic fruits and vegetables but honestly it’s hard with a tight budget. So when I can’t manage it, I just try to be conscious of what I am consuming and where it came from.

First of all, anything organic that is cheaper (or only marginally more expensive) than it’s non-organic conterport I’ll buy in a heartbeat. Beyond that, I make it a point to buy organic versions of the “dirty dozen” fruits and veggies. For my husband and I, that means apples, grapes, spinach, and lettuce on a regular basis.

i buy organic pretty much whenever possible – i decided long ago that it is worth the extra money. in the summer, i usually make exceptions for small local farms who simply can’t afford to get certified but practice all the same farming as organic farms. love buying local!

  23. April 23, 2011 7:26 am

I buy most of my produce organic when possible because I like to support organic farmers (and my own health). Organic farmers have to work so much harder AND pay extra fees to become certified organic. They have to work with smaller crops, and suffer lower sales because their end product has to be more expensive for them to make any profit. I hope that if we all buy more organic the government will eventually realize we need to lower the price!

  24. April 23, 2011 7:27 am

I try to buy as much organic as possible, but eggs and dairy and soy especially. Although sometimes it just seems like grocery stores are just trying to make a huge profit from us, and double or triple the price of organic just because they can.. I certainly don’t make enough money to support all organic lifestyle!

    Oikos is my favorite!
I occasionally buy organic products; especially if it dairy. I want my dairy products to be free of added hormones and any other drugs they add to cows and such. Also, while I don’t eat meat, I highly encourage others to buy organic meat just because it usually means the animal was grass fed and not treated inhumanely.

I will only buy organic when it’s the same or cheaper as the non-organic version. While I would love to eat organic food, this is a decision I make because I value getting through school with out debt or incurring very much of it over eating organic foods for several years. One of my roommates (a very obnoxious one at that) would hassle me about it but then he would eat portions way to big (and is borderline obese because of his food choices), doesn’t exercise, etc. Basically, I figure if I make healthy choices for me, which includes monetary decisions effecting my stress level, I am taking care of myself. Eating healthy, organic or not, exercising, getting enough sleep, and maintaining a healthy stress level are what I have decided is important.

Whenever I buy flavored greek yogurt I tend to get organic (usually Oikos) simply because it has less sketchy sweetening ingredients. To be honest, I could do with being more responsible and purchasing organic stuff because I usually just purchase organic stuff inadvertently if the food I prefer happens to be organic (e.g. TJ’s organic brown rice and organic quinoa). Seeing as I still live at home and my parents pay for my grocery bills (which already are expensive for them since I tend to eat verryyy different from how they do), buying organic wholesale is just too dang expensive =(

I always buy organic spinach, lettuce, and strawberries. Because they aren’t too much more expensive and are all on the dirty dozen list.

  106. April 23, 2011 1:24 pm

I buy organic whenever possible, but especially if its a food that is high in fat. Pesticides and toxins are fat soluble so they will be more concentrated in high fat foods like nuts and seeds. I can’t always afford organic, but I’ve learned a lot about the difference between organic farming and conventional, and there IS a big difference, so buying organic is important to me. I also try not to sweat it too much though. It is very difficult to live in this world if you have extreme views, as in ONLY eating/using 100% organic.

I try to buy mostly organic, if only it wasn’t so costly! But I always buy organic sauces, soups & prepared meals because I know that they are all natural and do not contain all the scary processed ingredients in regular food!

I try to buy most everything organic, but like a lot of us sometimes it just isn’t in the “funds”

What a great giveaway! (And the blog, as always, is fabulous!!) I rarely buy organic, since I’m a poor grad student, but I have a feeling that’s going to change – I’m pregnant with my first little one and I don’t want my kiddo exposed to all the bad crap! Plus, I try to grow what I can organically, which helps stretch the buck!

  117. April 23, 2011 2:59 pm

I think most organic products are a crock! The organic industry isn’t as well maintained and regimented as we all would like to think … there are a lot of companies that can just slap an Organic label on there and up their selling price … I like organic veggies, but otherwise, I only watch out for my meats and eggs, hormone free!

I don’t buy organic because I am really not sure what the difference is. I understand its better for me but I feel as if everything in life is going to hurt me—I am interested in doing a organic vs non organic taste test to see if there is a difference. And Im a student on a tight budget, but I am sure down the road I will definitely be more likely to buy organic staples.

Wow…giveaway extravaganza (or eggs-travaganza since it IS Easter). I try to go organic but only if I can afford it. Though organic dairy is more of a priority since I hate the thought of all those hormones (eggs too!). Ideally organic and Local if I can…yay farmer’s markets :)

FYI: I got three Chobani coupons from Emily who wrote a PS> “Isn’t Janetha the best?”

I was really impressed that she took the time to send them and write a personal note. Thanks for actually following up on that…hope I can find the lemon flavor!
