image

image

big congrats to you, caroline! second to last entry.. you lucked out Smile send me your mailing information ASAP and i will get the lunch bag out to you.

and now…

because i have been doing this:

(i’ll explain later.)

IMG_4306

and i still have to deal with this:

(no explaining needed.)

IMG_4307

i will be posting another giveaway post tonight.

lucky you!

actually, this is probably the best giveaway of all twelve giveaways.

i am not joking.

let’s start with a cup of coffee, shall we?

IMG_4219

not just any cup of coffee.. a perfect cup of coffee.

IMG_4220

twelve perfect cups of coffee, to be exact.

IMG_4221

do you remember when i went to peet’s coffee in california over thanksgiving weekend? well, do you? i do.

image

if you don’t remember, let me remind you. they offered these incredible single serving french press cups for coffee.

image

marshall and i were astonished. everyone knows french pressed coffee is the very best.

here’s a story.

after i posted about the amazing disposable french press coffee cup, i received a comment from one of my readers, carrie (hi, carrie!!) and she said that her dad works for the company that makes those cups! such a small world.

before i knew it, carrie’s dad, bruce, was emailing me offering to send me some cups of my own. are you kidding me?! stoked!

this single use french press has a name.. it is called Xpress by Smart Cup.

image

this nifty cross section shot of the cup shows you how the disposable lid acts as a single-serve french press. it is pretty ingenious, no?

check out the deconstructed lid:

image

let me show you how it works.

IMG_4222

first, pick out your coffee of choice.

IMG_4233

this is a bonus in my household because marshall and i sometimes like to drink different flavors but don’t want to brew two pots of coffee in the bodum french press. with the Smart Cup Xpress, everybody wins!

next, measure out a heaping scoop of coffee grounds using the handy measuring spoon that is included in the kit.

IMG_4232IMG_4235

next, pour piping hot water into the cup, leaving room for cream if desired. you want to have about 1/2” of space at the top when all is said and done.

IMG_4238

give it a little stir and let it steep for 3 or 4 minutes. before putting the lid on, add any milk/cream/sweetener/whathaveyou. then, carefully place the lid on the cup so the rim is between the press mechanism and the actual lid.

IMG_4241

next, affix the rod into the center hole of the lid.

IMG_4242

then, it’s time to press!

IMG_4243IMG_4245

voila! a perfectly brewed, individual cup of french press coffee at your fingertips and ready to take with you on the go!

IMG_4246

clearly, i get stupidly excited about inventions that make my life easier and more fun.

Xpress lids are popping up across the nation at various coffee shops. for a list of where you can find a shop near you, check out the partners tab on the Smart Cup website. new carriers are popping up every day, so check your local coffee shop. if they don’t offer the Xpress system, tell them about it and encourage them to check it out!

now, for the good part..

image

would you like to win an Xpress kit of your own?

image

i am sure you do.

THREE ways to enter:

  • first & mandatory entry: go to the Smart Cup XPress website and take look around. there are several tabs as well as videos and blog posts.  leave a comment below telling me something you learned about the company and/or the Xpress lid from their website.
  • second (optional) entry: “like” Smart Cup on facebook (click the link)  and leave a comment below letting me know you did so.
  • third (optional) entry: follow Smart Cup on twitter (click the link) and tweet about this giveaway.  you could say: “@janeeetha is giving away ONE HUNDRED @XpressLid kits for single serving french pressed coffee http://wp.me/pv3O5-7iu”

UM.. yeah, did you catch that? one hundred winners. shocking, i know. the folks at Smart Cup are just that awesome. and generous. they are really stoked on the Xpress system and they want you to be, too!

as a bonus, TEN of the 100 winners will be able to give me the information of their favorite local coffee shop and Smart Cup will send a case of Xpress lids to the coffee shops so they can try them out for themselves!  WOW.

so.. what are you waiting for? get those entries in! i will be taking entries until 4 PM on christmas eve.. good luck!

well i KINDA knew this already because my fam is in the coffee buiss as you know BUT A French Press delivers a premium cup of coffee by using a system that places coffee grounds in direct contact with hot water and that offers a larger surface area for extraction.

It is the BEST WAY! I want this so bad it would be beyond perfect for me to bring to work!! from one coffee lover to another, you already made my day with this giveaway and its only 5:25am!

I think these Xpress cups are completely wasteful. It would much more environmentally and economically sound if you went with any number of the reusable, travel ready versions of this. I personally use the Bodum Travel Coffee Press

You even have the option for a picture insert. Mine tumbler has a picture of my dog :-)

    • Anne permalink
      December 21, 2010 4:52 am

I’d also like to add that no matter what system you use to brew coffee, the most important step in the coffee making process (in my opinion as a barista at a well known specialty coffee roaster in Portland, OR) is the grind of your beans. A poor bean grinding can’t make good coffee regardless of the method used to brew.

WOW what a Merry Give-a-Way!!! I learned that French press is soooo much better because it lets the essential oils and auromas seep into the coffee instead of going through a paper filter. Yummy, I heart coffee. I do prefer using my own re-usable cup, however, it does make it very convenient when your not able to bring your own(and that seems to always happen in life so good to be prepared).

    Smartsy folks:

Operationally, you start by combining 1 ½ scoops (2-3 tablespoons) of coarse ground coffee or 1-2 tablespoons of loose tea with hot water to most 16oz hot cups, condiments can be added then or later. For 20 oz cups, use 2.5 to 3.5 tablespoons for coffee and 1.5 to 2.5 tablespoons for tea

  138. December 21, 2010 8:41 am

Visited the website…WOW!…$15.00 a cup for coffee that has been eaten as a bean by a cat, digested, poopied out, picked out of the poop (not the job I would choose), then is considered as yummy for your tummy. Hmmm….I think I’ll pass! BUT I would love the SmartCup’s XPress Kit!!

sweet. i learned why french press tastes so good, and its because the water and grounds can come into direct contact with each other. and the science geek in me liked the explanation of a “larger surface area for extraction”

I learned that the founder was inspired by his wife to make French press on the go –so sweet! Also, French pressed coffee tastes the best because of the method of retaining the flavor and aroma.

So I’m definitely in the minority but I agree with the few peeps above who have mentioned how wasteful these cups are. It’s great that the lids are recyclable, but just think of all the energy and fuel being used to create these one time use disposable cups and then to ship said cups, that would be eliminated if you bought a reusable mug that could be used time and time again. I’m all for recycling, but even better than recycling is reducing waste by reusing our stuff :)

I just started drinking coffee, so I didnt really know what a french press was: I learned that it’s when coffee is brewed by placing the coffee and water together, leaving it to brew for a few minutes, then trapping the coffee grinds at the bottom of the cup. neat!

I’m not a huge coffee drinker but like the founder of Xpress, Mr. Jeff Baccetti. This is the most amazing idea for my fiance! He LOVES french press coffee and always maked the biggest mess when he makes it. BUT I do love tea and apparently the Xpress is just as great for tea lovers, so I had to enter.

I tried these at Gnomedex in Seattle and they made the best cup of coffee I had ever had. Strong, fresh, and just the way that I wanted it. When are these things coming to the East Coast? Put these into a Wegman’s and people might fight to get a better spot in line.
