quality time and cold water.

September 7, 2010

i love when holidays fall on a monday!  that means it is a 4 day work week and the weekend is just that much closer.  i am definitely one of those people who work for the weekend.  don’t get me wrong, i love my job.  but not as much as i love my saturdays!

i was able to spend my day off yesterday with one of my favorite people: my mom.  she was heading up to park city to go to the outlet shops and i invited myself along.

we had a lot of fun trying on clothes and shoes, but to be honest.. we had the most fun at the food & kitchen stores!

have you guys ever been to a harry & david store?  well, i hadn’t.  yesterday was a first for me!

i was enamored by the never-ending jars of delicious sauces, dips and other fun food items.

IMG_1488 IMG_1486 IMG_1487

i was giddy over the seasonal halloween products.. i LOVE halloween!

IMG_1496 IMG_1495

and get a load of these malted milk balls.. they had about 8 different varieties!

what can i say, balls excite me.

they also had a few samples of their goods out for all to try.

pretzels with pineapple relish+cream cheese:

savory meatballs coated in charred pineapple grilling sauce and signature BBQ sauce:

flax seed chips with cream cheese+pepper & onion relish:

i would be lying if i said we only had one meatball. like i said, balls excite me.

we decided to go back to harry & david’s after making the rest of the rounds of the shops because we knew our purchases would be plentiful and heavy.  well, we were right! at the end of the shopping fun, we went back and loaded up.  i got a few different soups, some artichoke salsa, a hard boiled egg timer, and some assorted candies for marshall.

somewhere along the way, i shared half of a kind bar with my mom.

and also saw this adorable shoe box, had to take a photo :)

randy should totally get into modeling!

another store we visited was a kitchen gadget store, i don’t recall the name.

there were walls of glorious gadgets. i was in kitchen heaven!

they had a whole section of cute, miniature things.  if you know me, you know i LOVE little things!

IMG_1507 IMG_1509

once we got back to the car (after FOUR hours of shopping!) i was parched.  luckily, i had filled this water bottle up at home before heading to park city.

the thermos hydration bottle.  this bottle was sent to me for free to try out and review.  i was not compensated for my review and my opinion of the bottle is 100% my own.

a few things about the bottle:

  • TherMax® double wall vacuum insulation for maximum temperature retention
  • Hygienic push button sipper lid with locking ring
  • Comfortable rubber grip
  • Sweat proof design won’t leave water rings
  • Fits most automotive cup holders
  • Capacity: 18 oz
  • Dimensions: 2.5″ W x 2.5″ D x 10″ H

but probably the most exciting feature that the hydration bottle boasts: keeps liquids cold for up to TWELVE hours!

after four hours of sitting in the hot car, i was sure the water would be warm.  my mom’s water bottle was warm.  i popped the top of my thermos hydration bottle and took a sip. and… it was cold! ice cold! i was so impressed. so was my mom.  in fact, she ask, “where can i get one of these?!”—it really is that awesome.  thermos is onto something here.  i definitely recommend the bottle.  my only beef is that it only holds 18 oz.  i sure wish it had more capacity!

all that shopping wore us out, so we headed to a mexican joint in park city that i had heard a lot of good things about: el chubasco.

there was an array of salsas.. probably 10 different varieties! and they were all super spicy :O

we were given complimentary trips which gave us a chance to sample said salsas.

i ordered a duo of tacos: chicken & shredded beef.

the chicken was flavorful and tender, but i would not say it was anything to write home about.

the shredded beef, on the other hand, was AMAZING! it was juicy, packed with flavor and left me wanting more.  next time my order will be two of these guys!

after our mexican fiesta in our mouths, momma b & i realized we didn’t have a thing to do, so we took advantage of the situation and went to a movie.  man, i can’t remember the last time i went to a movie with my mom.  we are both always so busy, it was sure nice to take a time out and just enjoy a flick together.  and some popcorn, of course :)

image [source.]

have you guys seen inception? i know i am late to the party! but i really enjoyed it. it took me the whole movie to figure out, so it would be nice to see again to make more sense of the whole thing.

i got home around 9:30 and, since i had popcorn for dinner, i decided to have peach pie for dessert.  i walked in my house to see marshall noshing on a marie callendar’s peach pie.. who am i to deny the flaky crust, juicy peaches and fresh whipped cream?!

needless to say, it was a great labor day.  big thanks to momma b for spending a whole day with sarcastic, little old me.

1. what fall/winter holiday is your favorite: halloween, thanksgiving, christmas or new years? call me predictable: christmas is my fave. i love everything about it. but it is a hard pick, as i love all these holidays.

2. what is the last movie you saw in the theater? see above.

Oh wow I want to go to a harry and david store! That looks amazing!
I want to say Christmas, but I really love Thanksgiving – all of the holiday fun + more to look forward too. As much as I love Christmas, it’s practically over the next day!

I would say New Year’s is my favorite fall/winter holiday, but I’m more of a summer holiday gal.

I really want to see Inception! And The American with Clooney, yum. I saw Eat Pray Love last night in theaters.

Looks like a FUN shopping trip! I love kitchen stores. Too much.

  3. September 7, 2010 1:11 pm

My dad loves Harry and David!

I can’t even remember the last movie I saw in theaters…Maybe I should go see a movie?

And you need some Jewish holidays in there, too, for the Jews among your readers (or is it just me?). Rosh Hashanah starts tomorrow evening, and it’s a pretty great holiday, except maybe for all of the sitting in synagogue that it requires for many of us. But if there’s an awesome choir, or an awesome rabbi, even that’s pretty nice….

    1. Thanksgiving. Hands down. So many delicious foooooods!
    2. We NEVER go to the movies, always rent. The last movie I saw in theaters was Zombieland!

  5. September 7, 2010 1:17 pm

I am absolutely crazy about Harry & David. Andy and I went this weekend too but sadly ours did not have samples of balls. Jerks.

Inception was so good! Looks like you had a great mother/daughter day.

  6. September 7, 2010 1:18 pm

I used to work next door to the Harry and Davids and they’d always bring us over treats, those were the best days!

  7. September 7, 2010 1:18 pm

    1. Don’t make me choose! I’m obsessed with Haloween and Christmas (I basically like anything with theme colors!).

    2. I saw “The Switch” and it was actually pretty good.

  8. September 7, 2010 1:19 pm

Dang. Now I’m wishing I had taken the offer of the water bottle for myself instead of as a giveaway. LOL

My fave holiday for the MEANING is Christmas…for obvious reasons. My fave holiday for the celebration part is Thanksgiving. It’s less commercialized and stressful.

  9. September 7, 2010 1:22 pm

Such fun shopping! I love Harry and David’s! Their moose crunch (or munch?) is so good! The Mexican looks fantastic! I had a lot of Mexican this weekend and it was all yummy. Halloween is my favorite holiday. Its also my Dad’s birthday! I cannot remember the last movie I saw in theaters…how sad is that? haha.

  10. September 7, 2010 1:30 pm

The last movie I saw was Inception. I loved it! I really want to see it again, but I can wait until it comes on video.

  11. September 7, 2010 1:35 pm

ugh so they have a harry & david outlet near me and i try to avoid it at ALL costs because i know i would get sucked into the sauce-heaven and balls to the walls things they have there! those banana balls have me on the way to the kitchen for my mid-afternoon snaaack :)

i love love loveee me some thanksgiving! mainly because it gets my whole family together and involves absurd amounts of food

  12. September 7, 2010 1:45 pm

Hey cutie pie, awesome sounding labor day! I am in agreement about Christmas! We don’t go in much for Halloween in England and obviously Thanksgiving is off the cards! So, Christmas is the big one and only!

Popcorn for dinner sounds soooo good. Last movie: The Other Guys. Terrible film but I love Will Ferrell so much I still laughed out loud!

  13. September 7, 2010 1:53 pm

Its pathetic, but I haven’t seen a movie in the theater in years…I want to….just hasn’t been a good thing or smart thing for me to do.
That sounds like a good movie though.

I can never decide what I enjoy more btw halloween and christmas…their so different…but i love the spirit and magic about them.

I love Halloween! I went to see Step Up 3D and loved it! It was total cheese but the dancing was amazing x x x

  16. September 7, 2010 2:14 pm

I love the Harry & David store! OMG the Moose Munch!

I love Halloween too! I already have my costume. Have to get it out of the brand new bag and get it all ready. It’s kinda a surprise for now but I’ll have lots of pics as we’re having a destination Halloween.

    Little balls, you kill me.

I love Harry and David! You must get everything! I’ve tried almost everything and it’s ALL yummy(and I’m pretty picky). Moose munch is a must!!!! Anyways, my favorite Fall/Winter holiday would be Christmas. THE BIRTH OF JESUS of course!! I do love Halloween a lot too, cause I’m still a kid at heart.
The last movie I saw in a theater was Toy Story 3 with the sweetest little girl ever-my 18mo. old niece. Oh, and popcorn for dinner sounds great. I’ve done that many times.

  18. September 7, 2010 2:47 pm

omg harry and david is amazing! just like williams sonoma! its so so so amazing in there I could spend millions! :)

  19. September 7, 2010 3:57 pm

I LOVE H&D!! There coffee is the best! The Moosemunch is awesome too ;)

The last movie for me was Inception also. I’m glad Mike was there to explain it to me.

Christmas is my fave too. My parents spoiled me and still do. Speaking of…I miss going to H&D with my mommy whenever I want :( Although I love it up here it feels like i’m so far away.

  20. September 7, 2010 4:51 pm

So I was reading this post right before Body Pump tonight and you always make me smile. I think I smiled for the entire warm up because I was just thinking of you saying “I like my balls!” You’re the best! :)

  21. September 7, 2010 4:58 pm

Halloween is my favorite, Christmas a close second, and I could completely skip Thanksgiving day.

The last movie I saw in the theater was The Other Guys, which was funnier than I expected. I used to go to the movies with my mom all the time. It’s one of the few things I really, really miss about moving away.

  22. September 7, 2010 5:03 pm

My sister’s is Thanksgiving. I’m like, “What?? Seriously?” She’s a strange one :).

Thank you so so much, Janetha, for your wall post yesterday. Seeing your message put a huge smile on my face!

  23. September 7, 2010 5:22 pm

I’m a first time commenter so I wanted to let you know that I’m loving your blog! You’re so real and truthful, which I love.

I love ALL fall/winter holidays but if I had to choose I would also say Christmas! And the last movie I saw was Eclipse, I think? Agh it’s embarrassing to admit that!

P.S. I would have been in heaven in that Harry & David and kitchen gadget store too!

  24. September 7, 2010 5:49 pm

I’ve never been in a H&D’s…but based on your photos it’s a good thing for me and my budget!!!

I’m a Christmas gal all the way – but New Year’s is a close second! Sadly, the last movie I saw in theaters was Kickass…which pretty much was everything but :/

  25. September 7, 2010 6:02 pm

    Gosh, your camera rocks!:)

I ♥ all Fall holidays, but in recent years I’m really loving Thanksgiving because it seems to be less stressful and more focused on family-time than gifts and shopping. Plus, the food rocks! Ha!

The last movie I saw in theaters was Eclipse and that was just last weekend. I was really late on the bandwagon for that one, but there were only 4 other people in the theater, so we had great seats HA!

ugh, i love harry and david.
the last movie i saw was inception, too! except it was my third time seeing it. first time was amazing, second time i understood everything, third time it was too damn long and i wanted to leave.

  27. September 7, 2010 6:13 pm

Harry & David is great, their chocolates are top notch and it is the PERFECT place to put together a gift basket.

Was the store you were in called Le Gourmet Chef? We have one here with all that stuff and I’m just GAGA for it!

Oh and the last movie I saw in the theater was a chick flick, I’m embarassed to say. It was The Backup Plan. My girl friend and I always pick a movie to go to once a month on a Saturday when it’s cheap prices, and we can have popcorn for breakfast and there are no crowds on a Saturday morning at 9.

  28. September 7, 2010 6:17 pm

Ok so I never knew Harry and David had a physical store–I thought it was all online! Looks fun though, I don’t allow myself to go into stores like that though since I feel like I could buy out the entire store.

I saw The American this wknd, it was decent but I would wait to rent it.

  29. September 7, 2010 6:37 pm

OMG love Harry and Davids. The one at Mall of America is amazing, the pears around Christmas time are the best I’ve ever had!
I could live in that store.

  30. September 7, 2010 6:46 pm

    Look at all those vinegars!
I heart Christmas, all the way.

  31. September 7, 2010 6:58 pm

Ahh that mini cheese grater is the most adorable thing ever! And I need to try out that mexican joint, looks like lonestar quality deliciousness! Oh and I’m glad your eyes are better : ) love you!

p.s. those meatballs gave me a craving for meaty balls of love…

  33. September 7, 2010 7:58 pm

    1. I think that my favorite Holiday would have to be either my family members birthdays, i love to plan parties and order cakes, or thanksgiving/christmas!! I hate choosing.
    2. I think that the last movie I saw in theaters was Dinner with Schmucks.

  34. September 7, 2010 8:36 pm

    Ooh, salsa bar.

I honestly cannot remember the last movie that I saw in the theater!

  35. September 7, 2010 9:22 pm

Harry & David is good stuff. I love their banana PB. And their truffles. But I digress. I love Thanksgiving. Food, football, turtlenecks!

  36. September 7, 2010 9:53 pm

Harry and David has a store?! Who knew!! Well…at least I didn’t.
    1. Oh Christmas for sure.
    2. Hmmm…I think it was Twilight – the most recent one.

  37. September 7, 2010 10:44 pm

    Favourite Holiday: Christmas, no competition.

Last movie: The Other Guys (with Will Ferrel, the one with the police men). Will Ferrell is my boyfriends’ favourite – so it was obviously a must see for him!

  38. September 7, 2010 11:27 pm

i just won one of those bottle in tina/faith fun’s give away. so excited to try it. it just arrived, today!!

harry & david. you had never been?! you are a foodie who’s never been? if you have the chance to go in Dec, they have TONS of choc, candy, seasonal xmas party food, you would be in heaven. skylar uses H & D as “lunch” at the mall, just sampling nonstop. LOL

movie in a theatre, i kid you not, it was 2006 and i was pregnant w/ morning sickness and we went there SOLELY so i could be in the a/c since our house didnt have any. that was the last movie i saw. i have no idea what it was. i was puking the whole time

  39. September 8, 2010 12:13 am

i still have to get on the inception band wagon…

  40. September 8, 2010 12:23 am

My son has that water bottle. I’ve been thinking about getting one myself. I have a Laken right now but I’ve heard they are not as clean as once touted. I’ve going between the Thermos and the Kleen Kanteen.

    I can’t even remember last time I was at a theatre. :-(

  41. September 8, 2010 2:51 am

Look at those balls. I want peanut butter balls.

My favorite holiday is my birthday. December 8th. A day of me!

The last movie I saw in the theater…oh lord, we do a lot of dvds now. Um….I think it was this French movie that I don’t remember the name of. It was good though.

  42. September 8, 2010 5:51 am

    Looks like a great holiday!!

It is SO hard for me to pick my fave out of those three holidays! Ahh. But I think I have to say Christmas as well, because I love eggnog(!), baking cookies(!!), seeing family&friends, giving & receiving gifts, and of course… the FOOD! :)

I saw Inception last time I went to the movies! I want to see it again as well!

  43. September 8, 2010 5:54 am

Christmas fo sho!! The only acceptable part of summer ending is that we’re that much closer to Christmas :)

The last movie I saw in theaters was actually Inception…twice! What can I say, I’m a Leo fan!!

    Happy hump day :)

  44. September 8, 2010 6:36 am

i think i would loveee the pineapple grilling sauce from harry & davids! looks so good.

i haven’t been to a movie theatre in a LONG time. how was inception!?

  45. September 8, 2010 6:47 am

Omigosh I love Halloween too. Seeing all the witchy stuff just makes me happy. Cheesy horror movies, little kids dressing up, and chocolate. It’s a given.

  47. September 8, 2010 7:37 am

Sounds like the perfect day out! I need to hang out with my mum a bit more..

I’m honestly not the biggest fan of holidays (people, don’t throw stones at me!). For some reason holidays aren’t that big over here.. My dad always bought our Christmas tree on the 23rd or so ;).

Ah I need to go and see Inception! I haven’t had the time to go to the cinema in ages though. Ok maybe not in ages.. for most people.. but I usually to twice a month but now I can’t even remember the last film I saw! Sad sad. ;)

  48. September 8, 2010 9:28 am

Fall and Thanksgiving are my favorite! Lol, even if sometimes is 90 degrees here

  49. September 8, 2010 10:17 am

this day sounds amazing. i love nothing more than spending some QT with my mom! im sad she lives so far away, otherwise we’d be having movie/shopping dates weekly :)

  50. September 8, 2010 7:53 pm

Meatballs, shredded beef, little kitchen gadgets, Momma B, a perfect holiday indeed!!! It makes me miss my mom, so happy I get to live vicariously through your mother/daughter time :)

    1. You may recall I don’t like Christmas. Halloween is probably my favourite because I LOVE dressing up in costume AND eating candy. It wins at everything.

    2. Mine was Eat Pray Love! There’s a movie theatre down the street that does 5 dollar mid-week shows, so I’ve actually been going to the movies a lot lately. I saw the Eat Pray Love all by myself, and oddly, the theatre was packed with single women in their 30s *sigh*
