dessert before dinner? sure, ok.

March 16, 2010

love pies! thanks so much for all of your support on my decision to do another official body for life challenge!!  several of you said you like to see my macros and all the numbers, so on the meals that i do figure my stats you can plan on seeing them.

today was a little off for me as far as meal times go.  why, you ask?  well, around 8:45 AM i woke up to my phone ringing.. um, i was supposed to be to work at 8 AM!! yeah, my alarm did not go off and a totally overslept!! my boss was calling to ask me something (he was not at the office yet either) and i was like, “WOW, sure glad you called me, i overslept!!”

hah. so that was that. i didn’t get to work until nearly 10 AM and i didn’t eat until 10:30 AM.


meal 1: maple cinnamon protein oats @ 10:30 AM


254 calories, 5g fat, 24g carbs, 30g protein

needless to say, the day was really busy and i spent most of it doing quickbooks accounting work. lame sauce.  plus, when usual lunch time rolled around and i was off schedule, it sure made the afternoon draggg.  finally it was time to eat lunch!

meal 2: same as yesterday @ 1:30 PM

same as yesterday means a la tortilla factory wrap with mustard, lean  turkey breast and romaine lettuce along with some veggies:


all the greens are actually the bag of leftover salad from dinner at mom’s on sunday. i always take the leftover salad from sunday dinner and use it for my wraps during the week. clever.


i also had 1/2 of a chocolate peppermint luna after lunch because i had a sweet tooth and my wrap was pretty low cal/low carb.


meal 2 all together: 267 calories, 6.5g fat, 34g carbs, 28g protein

i used to not have a sweet tooth at all.  somewhere along the way i developed one and often times want a little something sweet after i eat. not sure where this sweet tooth came from but i wish it would go away!  at least there are healthy choices to satisfy my craving from something sweet, but still.. it is annoying.

meal 3: PB&J yogurt mess @ 4:30 PM


this snack rocked my face off!  it had:

  • 8 oz fat free voskos greek yogurt
  • 1 TB PB2 (powdered peanut butter)
  • 1 TB smucker’s sugar free raspberry jam
  • 1/2 cup nature’s path multigrain flakes


whoever first came up with pairing peanut butter and jam should own their own planet. and i want to live on it.


257 calories, 3g fat, 32g carbs, 29g protein


after this satisfying snack it was off to the gym for a lower body workout! i do body for life style workouts but instead of resting, i like to do ab work between sets.

geez.. body for life style workouts take forever to type. oh well, i want to track my progress so i will just have to suck it up!


post-workout refuel was necessary and i had meatloaf on the menu for dinner, which takes forever to cook, so i decided to switch up my meals and have my dessert before dinner!

meal 4: cinnamon protein cake + peanut butter & 1/2 a fuji @ 6:45 PM


mmmm.. protein cake wins again! this time i used 1 scoop BSN lean dessert cinnamon roll protein powder, 1/2 tsp baking powder, 1 egg white and 1 TB unsweetened apple sauce.  no stevia needed, the protein powder is already sweet.


topped the protein cake with 2 tsp naturally more PB.


since this snack is low carb and i needed to refuel after my workout, i also ate 1/2 of a fuji apple.


meal 4 all together: 225 calories, 5g fat, 22g carbs, 25g protein

after this i got to work on dinner.. spinach turkey muffins!


i mixed:

  • 20 oz lean ground turkey breast
  • 3 cups fresh spinach, chopped
  • 1 cup salsa
  • 1 medium red onion, chopped
  • 4 egg whites
  • 1 package knorr vegetable soup mix
  • 1/4 cup ground flax seed
  • cumin, thyme, salt & pepper to taste (eyeballed it all)


best way to mix meatloaf?


with your hand, of course!


plopped 1/12 of the mixture into each one of my silicone baking cups. LOVE this muffin tray. no cooking spray necessary. i highly recommend silicone mats/baking cups/etc!


baked at 350 degrees [f] for 45 minutes.


each muffin works out to be about 90 calories, 12g protein, 4g carbs and 3.5g fat. not bad!

meal 5: 3 spinach turkey muffins + green beans @ 8:30 PM


i served my meatloaf muffins with some green beans (about a cup) and topped it all off with some reduced sugar heinz ketchup.


i could be the poster child for this stuff. and with stats like these, i don’t see why anyone wouldn’t use it. low sugar, no HFCS, totally delicious.. sold.


meal 5 all together:  327 calories, 11g fat, 21g carbs, 36g protein

and there you have it.  i will probably have something before bed because i hate going to bed hungry.. not sure what it will be. maybe another protein cake because i am officially obsessed :)


oh yeah, i am still planning a wedding.

i haven’t talked much about the wedding planning lately because, well, i haven’t been doing much planning lately!  but i did make this style board that has a lot of the ideas i have in mind for the big day:


these are the exact bridesmaid dresses/shoes i am getting.  we decided to go for the purple flip flops~ it was up in the air between purple or yellow but i think purple works better.

for the guys, they will be wearing the yellow ties but they won’t be wearing suit jackets. they will just be wearing white shirts/black vests.

the guys shoes rock.. marshall’s one request was to have the guys wear pumas. he loves puma.. he is obsessed. he even has a puma tattoo!

the pumas for the wedding have to be custom made for two reasons: one, they have to be purple and black. and two, they have to be vegan.  three of the four groomsmen are vegan.  do you know how impossible it is to find purple and black vegan pumas? well, i do. it is 100% impossible. luckily, puma does offer the custom shoe creator and so we will be doing that!

the flower girl dresses will  be that shade of yellow, but marshall’s mom is going to be making them and i am still looking for a cute flower girl pattern. so if anyone is good at finding dress patterns.. feel free to send links my way :)

the cake and flowers in the style board are just ideas~ those things have not been picked out just yet. still a lot to do!  the bouquets will have yellow, purple, blue and green.  the cake will be square like the photo but will definitely have houndstooth trim on there somewhere!

okay, enough wedding rambles.


tomorrow is st. patrick’s day!  well, or today, depending on when you are reading this.  i love it! i love green food and pinching people and all that.  what i don’t love is that creepy old movie called the leprechaun.  anyone ever see it?

1. in honor of st. patrick’s day, what is your favorite GREEN FOOD?? that is a hard one for me.. i love lots of green eats! but i have to say lately green monsters are my favorite green thing. you will definitely see one in tomorrow’s post!

2. do you have a hankering sweet tooth/have an urge to end meals with something sweet? i used to not ever want something sweet after i eat, but lately i can’t seem to shake the craving.

    I am loving your BFL friendly meals. Definitely giving me some ideas. What is the recipe for the spinach turkey muffings?

    MY favorite green thing is spinach–so versatile.

    And yes, I crave something sweet. Lately Ive just been having a clementine or two to ward off the craving!

    Oh I have a raging sweet tooth. It’s bad and I really think my past history with dieting etc made it worse. I think when I was heavy (and no food was off limits, you know?) I ate less sweets…but that was a long time ago so it’s hard to remember. Now though? Total sugar junky and I kinda hate it…

    Your protein cake looks good. Sometimes I do a scoop of peanut butter, a scoop of protein powder, some cocoa and some sugar free maple syrup. Put it in the microwave for 30 seconds and it’s kind of like a brownie.

    Green = avocados! And yes, I have a horrible sweet tooth.

    Oooh, boy, do I ever have a sweet tooth. My only defense is to not buy sweet things to keep in the house/at work, but I haven’t done so good at that lately.

    My favorite green food is kale, though I probably like all green things equally. They always make me feel good, no matter what it is I’m eating!

    to me there is no such thing as half a fuji apple. i consume the entire thing. and then i often go for another one :) green food: broccoli or edamame…or lettuce, despite my blog name…and i do have a thang for sweets but not all of the time! i almost always have a piece of fruit after dinner or something naturally sweet like dates + pb so that does the trick!

    i love april’s protein cakes! i alternate between chocolate and plain jane vanilla ones. i loooove mashing them up in a tbsp of nutella or yogurt for a treat and eating it with a spoon.
    1) green monsters/green beer are for sure my favourite festive frothy things (wooo alliteration). i’m planning on bringing a green monster in to work tomorrow morning and grossing everyone out with my smoothie stache. :D
    2) my sweet tooth rivals cookie monster’s. allll the time. omnomnomnom.

    ugh I hate days when I sleep in like that! Throws my whole day off!

    I’ve recently (in the past 2-3 years) developed a sweet tooth too. It drives me nuts. I really have to work on cutting back on artificial sweeteners and sugar.

    The BFL workouts seem awesome. Do you write them down before you go to the gym? Or do you just wing it?

    Love the wedding colors. Mine were purple, green and chocolate brown but I am really loving the yellow!

    Some seriously good eats in this post – including my fave reduced sugar ketchup/catsup and turkey meatloaf muffins!
    My favorite green food is kiwi and it has no competition. I wish I ate it more often.
    I have a huge sweet tooth and owe it to my Nana. She always had some type of cookie or cake at her house and practically force-fed it to us, but I still crave Oreos and Entenmanns (sp?) cakes thanks to her. Or a really good dish of sorbet.

    Hahahaha oh man the puma/vegan dilemma cracked me up. ‘100% impossible.’ Your wedding seems like it will be a PARTAAAAAY!!! Obvi since it’s YOU but still.

    Oh and at first I saw the bowl of the meat loaf ingredients and though that’s what you ate…until I scrolled down. I was a bit frightened :).

    So I heard, or read somewhere (can’t remember right now), that the craving for sweets after a meal has to do with the lack of protein in the said meal. Obviously you just blew that completely out of the water.
    I totally crave sweets after I eat, but I find it’s usually because I’m thirsty! If I down a bunch of water and wash all my food down the hatch, the craving goes away. If it’s a really intense craving then I just give in, sometimes our bodies know better than we do!
    Also, you totally rock this BFL thing!

    I could eat BSN Cinnamon Roll straight it’s so darn good! Favorite green food has got to be Avocados :) And I’ll definitely be dying things green tomorrow, I love St. Patrick’s day!

    ANYWAYS, i’m jealous of your peppermint stick luna bar snackage–since its my faveeee, and that yog mess looks amaze. I’m bummed that we just ran out of strawberry jam today! must re-stock.

    I will most def have to celebrate tomorrow with a green monster anddd i’d say my sweet tooth has grown over the past few years! I used to not care much about chocolate but now i go through phases where i loooove having some dark chocolate with fruit or pretzels after a long school day :)

    Those mini meatloafs look delish, and I don’t even eat meat! I should pass that recipe onto my brother, he’s a meatloaf fiend. So cool about the Pumas- I love when people make their wedding their own, instead of doing traditional everything!

    Fav green food…probably broccoli. In any other circumstance, I’d pick a sweet, but I can’t think of any green sugary food! And I always have to have something sweet after a meal, even if it’s just a piece of fruit. Have a great day chica!

    I would say my fave green food is brussels. I love them! And sweet stuff is included basically every meal for me. I inherited a huge sweet tooth from my momma. Although luckily, like you said, there are plenty of healthy ways to satisfy.

    Your wedding colors are the same as mine. It looked very nice :) And I love the flip flops and pumas ideas!

    I NEVER had a sweet tooth (as an adult anyways) until I did BFL last time. Something about it made me crave chocolate like you wouldn’t believe. Actually scared me a bit!

    Green foods? My favorite is spinach. Think I’ll do up a green monster for today.

    2. I used to have a MAJOR sweet tooth, but in the last few years I’ve started to crave savory over sweet. Unless I’m sick like I am right now, which makes me only want sweets again.

    i need to get my hands on that low sugar ketchup!! love the meals, and LOVE BSN cinnamon roll PP and it so is naturall sweet, i never need extra…I have been making mugs with pumpkin, BSN PP, eggwhites and cottage cheese SO good! I have applesauce in my cupboard so I will get on that to make that Protein cake!

    meatloaf muffins are SO good and SO easy to make. I make a big batch and freeze them for later too!

    green food-does a salad count?!? I have that for lunch!

    SF jam I cannot get enough i LOVE it, don’t like tons of SF things, but this jam is da booombbb

    My favorite green food is probably avocado, I made sure to have some with my breakfast this morning.

    I have the worst sweet tooth. 90% of the meals I eat I have to have something sweet & something savory. I love the contrast.

    I am officially in awe of your workouts. Big time. ROLE MODEL! :D Love the look of those meatloaf muffins- I think I would really like them. I like the protein cakes with fat free reddi-whip (really, I just want an excuse to eat reddi-whip…)

    Fave green foods: broccoli, grapes, asparagus, spinach, pesto (lol)

    I used to eat fruit after every meal…no idea why I stopped (?) but now I always have coffee or tea (sweetened) and it does the trick.

    1. Ummm who doesn’t love a shamrock shake from McDonalds? Yeah I do but haven’t had one since my dad would treat us kids to icecream, so its been a while at least.

    2. I think 1 answered that. I love a little sweet and protein cakes rule for that. Vita tops help too on occasion but the protein cakes are good for just a little something something.

    I totally made meatloaf last night too and mine had spinach as well! Great minds I guess. I’m still trying to get my blog started just haven’t found the time to keep up with it so I have worked out posting a bit on my phone so wish me luck! St. Patrick style!

    I love green monsters too! And brussels sprouts… and broccoli… and spinach… and green beer ;)

    Depending on the day, I do like to end my meal with something sweet- but always something small!

    Good for you – love the work outs – I will be printing them and putting them in my handy Oxygen binder book haha, then I can refer to them over and over again! Did my lower body yesterday…..can’t walk or sit today – too many reverse lunges, love that feeling!

    Asparagus is my green food of choice and of course CHOCOLATE for the sweet tooth craving – but I’m working on NOT indulging, we did it once and we can do it again, TOWANDA xoxoxoxo!!

    Oh man that snack does look sooo good! And PB & J is such a killer combo. Speaking of PB, my parents have the Naturally More pb and it’s sooo good! Me and my friend that is visiting with me are hooked!!! I miss you Janetha. I haven’t had as much time to read blogs these days, but I just looked back on some of your posts. WEDDING!! Well, I already knew that you were getting married, but I’m still excited for you lol.

    I think my favorite green food would have to be pears, and I have a HUGE sweet tooth. I pretty much can’t go to sleep at night unless something sugary has passed through my lips. I’m sooo going to try those angel food cakes. I’m always trying to figure out ways to make my sweets a little bit healthier.

    Hey girly! Ughhh I hate that feeling when you realize you’ve overslept due to the alarm not going off. Always seems to happen on days when you need it though. The PB&J yogurt mess looks super tasty. I always have the urge to have a little something sweet when I have a saltier meal :) You still look super tan!

    your food always looks so good !! I am def making protein cake and turkey meatloaf muffins :) Since I am doing BFL after your VERY inspirational photos…i am happy to see you are doing it again so i can steal some of your tips and tricks :) I wrote you a week ago b/c i just dont feel like i am getting the results i wanted on BFL.. I am in my 11th week….so i got a personal trainer for just one day a week to kick my butt into shape (my gym was having a pt sale…so 10 sessions for 399) not too bad :)

    Noting those mini meatloaves! I love me some meatloaf. But not mixing it with my hands. The thought of having raw meat stuck under my fingernails turns my stomach.

    1. Pears!! I’m still on my pear kick. Even better chopped up and mixed with cottage cheese… you know you wanna ;)

    2. I HAVE to end my meals with something sweet. I buy chocolate bars and have a square or half a square after every meal. Or a teeny amount of M&Ms or chocolate chips or something. Sugar-free Werther’s Originals are good for that too :)

    Aw I HATE oversleeping and feeling rushed! Yea, boring computer work is the pits. I’m addicted to Lunas, but I haven’t seen the Chocolate Peppermint around these parts. I adore that pic of you eating the apple with the bling flashin – hehe. GIRL – I was terrified of that movie growing up!!! Ok, ok, I’m still terrified of that movie. I almost peed myself when I saw that picture! Keep the wedding details coming…I love hearing about the big day.

    I get a sweet tooth a lot of times in the evenings…lately I’ve been making protein cakes too or I also like sugar free chocolate pudding with some whipped cream.

    My favorite green food is zucchini!

    If I perhaps wanted to do a BFL challenge (wink wink), what would that entale? Is it the BFL way of eating and then a certain type of workout? From what I read on the site it is just protein and carbs with healthy fats in the right combo plus BFL style workouts… What exactly are the guidelines?

    Oh I can’t choose. I have WAY too many favorite green foods. Please don’t make me pick! :)

    My sweet tooth has gotten to be almost completely nonexistent. I can’t explain it but I rather love this newer development. It used to be BAD!
