the start of something new.

March 15, 2010

hi friends!  sorry for my lack of posting over the weekend. life got in the way :)

lots to share today~ grab a snack and enjoy the ride. could be a long one!

friday.

by 7 PM all of us girls were wendover bound! in case you missed it, i told you all about wendover in my last post.  it is basically an ultra-ghetto version of las vegas and it is less than two hours from salt lake city.

when we arrived, i immediately took photos of our purple, island-inspired suite.

IMG_7619 IMG_7618

that is what they called it.  want to see how island inspired it really was?

seashell lamp.

 IMG_7621

fake palm tree.

IMG_7622

oh yeah.. i totally feel like i am on an island!

anyway!  we hadn’t had dinner so we got some to-go from the hotel restaurant.

1/2 of a club wrap (turkey, bacon, veggies, sans mayo on a whole wheat wrap)

IMG_7625

this was actually delicious! and the perfect amount of food, so i am glad we shared. and i am glad i resisted eating the french fries that came with the wrap ;)

after eating it was straight to the shenanigans. there are no words to describe the excitement that went on, but the a little bird told me that a picture is worth 1,000 words…

IMG_7626IMG_7633 IMG_7647  IMG_7654 IMG_7658 IMG_7663 IMG_7672IMG_7686 IMG_7731 IMG_7735IMG_7768 IMG_7771IMG_7777 IMG_7781 IMG_7783IMG_7784

with some late night dry wheat toast + over medium eggs~

IMG_7796

saturday.

the drive home was awful. it was a blizzard and i was a bundle of anxiety.  it was the worst 2 hours i have experienced in a very long time and i was ultra glad when we made it home safe and sound!

marshall came over and i made some brunch for the both of us…

IMG_7804

sauteed shallots, spinach & cherry tomatoes..

IMG_7801

added 6 egg whites+2 whole eggs..

IMG_7802

served with a toasted whole wheat english muffin & ICBINB spray.

IMG_7808IMG_7806

hmmm.. these eggs look like a weird color in the photos. i promise they were delicious, although you wouldn’t think so from the looks of them!

saturday afternoon was spent lounging around with the pups and the boyf fiance (still not used to the term) and i split a juicy orange with marshall.

 IMG_7810IMG_7811IMG_7813

then we decided to make a costco run.

but wait.. costco was closed. ugh, total fail.

instead, we went to sunflower market where i snagged some odds and ends~ including the key ingredient in my snack…

IMG_7815

pineapple chobani+plain oikos+shredded spoonfuls

IMG_7819

mmm, pineapple chobani is hands down my favorite flavor of them all.  i try not to eat flavored yogurts because of the sugar content, but i just can’t resist the pineappley goodness every once in awhile!  i added the plain oikos to it so i could up the protein content.

i love the way the shredded spoonfuls get yogurt trapped inside of each piece after mixing everything together. heaven in a cereal bowl.

saturday night we met some friends for some late night hang time and eats.. i wasn’t too hungry so i had a side salad with grilled chicken that somehow missed my camera’s radar.

sunday.

IMG_7821

i’m sorry, i just can’t get enough greek yogurt or cereal in my life.  breakfast was a repeat:

 IMG_7820

except this time it was just plain oikos and shredded spoonfuls with a handful of brown rice puffed cereal. they are like a healthier version of rice crispies.

IMG_7823

i have always eaten them in my yogurt messes, but i have never had a bowl of them with milk.. hey, i wonder if they snap, crackle and pop?

sunday afternoon there was a lame episode of snowboarding. we got up there super late but at least we made it up, right? right.

after snowboarding i went to my parents’ for dinner. sunday dinner never gets old. my mom cooked this time around.  the menu:

IMG_7829

  • crock pot roast
  • crock pot veggies (onion, carrots, potatoes)
  • reduced sugar ketchup (yes that is a menu item)
  • steamed cauliflower
  • green salad

delicious. thanks mom :)

sunday night marshall and i were going to go to alice in wonderland but i was tired and cranky so we ended up staying in and watching HGTV. addicted.

there may or may not have been a small bowl of vanilla bean ice cream consumed…

monday.

guess what today was?

day 1 of my new body-for-life challenge.

yeah~ i decided i need some structure in my life and i know BFL works for me.  i made this decision last week and you may have noticed my workouts last week were of the BFL variety.  i was testing them out to see if that is really what i wanted to do, and it definitely is.  you will be seeing lots of BFL meals and moves for the next 3 or 4 months.  starting now.

meal 1: eggbeaters+onions+mushrooms+tomatoes & dry wheat toast & black coffee & water @ 8:30 AM

IMG_7831

meal 2: turkey+veggies+mustard wrap on high fiber/low carb la tortilla factory tortilla @ 12:30 PM

IMG_7837IMG_7834IMG_7838

i also had 1/4 of a chocolate peppermint luna to curb my sweet tooth.

IMG_7840

meal 3: peanut butter chocolate banana protein shake @ 3:45 PM

IMG_7842

this had:

  • 1 scoop EAS premium protein powder in chocolate
  • 1/2 frozen banana
  • 1 TB PB2 (powdered peanut butter)
  • ice
  • 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk

drank it on the go.. more super secret shenanigans went down this afternoon. i can’t wait until i can share the shenanigans with you guys ;)

after taking care of business it was time for a HIIT session…

treadmill:

minute # speed (MPH)
0-1 5.0
1-2 5.5
2-3 6.0
3-4 6.5
4-5 7.0
5-6 7.5
6-7 6.0
7-8 6.6
8-9 7.2
9-10 7.8
10-11 6.0
11-12 6.7
12-13 7.4
13-14 8.1
14-15 6.0
15-16 6.8
16-17 7.6
17-18 8.4
18-19 9.5
19-20 3.5

as you can see,  i warmed up for two minutes and then did four 4 minute long interval sets. the first interval i increased the speed by 0.5 each minute, the next by 0.6 each minute, the next by 0.7 each minute and the final interval i increased the speed by 0.8 each minute with a final increase of 1.1 for the last minute.

total distance: 2.25 miles, total time: 20 minutes

i did a lot of grocery shopping after my workout. i went to the regular grocery store and to costco. my “dinner” consisted of: 1 handful cashews, 1/2 kashi peanut butter granola bar, 2 slices low sodium turkey breast.. yes, totally random, i know!

here is my grocery haul, because i know you are dying to see ;)

regular store:

IMG_7861

  • oikos
  • onions
  • avocado
  • bananas
  • unsweetened applesauce
  • deep chocolate vitatops

costco:

IMG_7859

  • low sodium turkey breast
  • ground turkey breast
  • boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • laughing cow light cheese
  • low fat cottage cheese
  • giant thing of cinnamon!
  • flat out wraps
  • broccoli
  • green beans
  • celery

for my fifth meal i had a few things.. probably too much protein powder but eh.. oh well!

meal 5: 1/2 cup kashi go lean w/ splash of almond milk, protein hot chocolate (a la deb) and a protein cake (a la therese)

IMG_7868 IMG_7867

let’s talk about the angel food cake protein cake:

IMG_7864

hahaha. glorious! this is my new favorite treat.. really does taste just like angel food cake. yoinked the exact recipe from therese who got the idea from april!

it is 1 scoop vanilla protein powder, 1 TB applesauce, 1/4 tsp baking powder, 1 egg white and a packet of stevia~ all mixed up and microwaved in a well-pam-sprayed coffee mug for 1 min 45 seconds.

cut in half and top with a tsp of naturally more PB~

IMG_7866

seriously so good! the stats are 198 calories, 4.5g fat, 9.5g carbs & 32g protein. can’t beat that.

i am not going to be tracking my calories/macros every day but i will be tracking them for awhile. here are today’s stats:

  • 1435 calories
  • 33g fat
  • 144g carbs
  • 162g protein
  • 35g fiber

i made my meals up as i went today and ended up with a carb/protein/fat ratio of 38/42/20!!  when doing body for life, you want to aim for a 40/40/20 ratio so i am pretty stoked that i still have the magic touch :)

okay—now that we are up to speed i can try to stay caught up on a daily basis. i am going to do my best!  life is busy, but blogging is important, so i will try to find a balance.

with that said, i’ve got a lot of meal planning, wedding planning and workout planning to do.. so i will catch you guys tomorrow!

Qs~

1. would you guys like me to post my nutrition stats if i figure them or keep them to myself? i don’t mind sharing the calculations but i won’t go to the trouble if nobody cares!

2. what is your favorite clean-eating treat? protein cake is my new #1.. but i do love protein ice cream.. i see that in my future very soon!!

Ahaha what crazy photos!!! I agree with GC…I gotta check out that protein cake espesh for my meals post MOVES!

  3. March 15, 2010 9:47 pm

I just bought that Columbus turkey somewhere (not Costco), and it’s really good! I’ll have to try to remember where I got it or check my Costco. Otherwise, your haul looks eerily similar to mine (except I get the Tortilla Factory tortillas instead of the Flat Outs). I have that cinnamon for sure!

I, for one, would read all your stats if you posted them. I’m even gonna try to make sense of your workouts. :)

Did you know that you have a ridiculous ratio of gorgeous friends? I guess it takes one to know one! Glad you got home safe!

PS. I had no idea they sold Vitatops in the store now. I used to be a fan from way back but eventually decided I don’t like them. I’m just not a cake person *gasp* (frosting – yes. Pie – yes. Chocolate – definitely).

  4. March 15, 2010 10:15 pm

Good luck with this next challenge! I think I might need a challenge to kick my little bootay into gear. I’m just so lax about the gym! Have a great evening!

Yay for BFL! I have a bit under 13 weeks left to go so almost 84 days too! We will be doin’ our thing at the same time – so cool! Thanks for stopping by the blog and the comments on my progress … can’t wait to follow yours too chica!

I haven’t tried that protein cake yet but neeeeed to! What kind of protein powder do you use? It looks like it came out great!

I am not all that interested in your calorie stats (mostly since BFL stays the same macro-wise day to day) … just love seeing the meals and moves! Can get some great ideas from you!

Fave clean eat? Probably my “Faux-gurt” these days. Had pistachio sugar-free pudding mix in Greek yogurt last night and it was sooo good! Butterscotch is up for manana …

  7. March 15, 2010 11:16 pm

Looks like you had fun in “ghetto vegas.” :) I LOVE pineapple chobani, but I hardly ever eat it either… And when I do, I hide it from the toddler (because I think he loves it more than I do. Writing this makes me realize that sound like an awful mother… But I share/give pretty much everything else he claims is his to him…).

I’ll have to try the protein cake, too. I’ve started to watch my protein (or lack therefore = way too many carbs)…

I love seeing your nutrition stats!

  8. March 15, 2010 11:59 pm

peanut butter chocolate banana protein shake = OMG that looks so creamy and delish!

Why am i never invited to the parties where self/mirror kissing and mirror licking happens??! I used to be..but now, not so much. When i get back to san diego hopefully soon…i have my girls there who i can get crazy with.

Thanks for your sweet comments today, my goodness I was soooo thrilled to see your hot face in my inbox, twice, in like 24 hrs!

Glad that BFL works for you. No, I do not care one iota about any stats of any kinds. I want to see pictures of your, your life, i don’t care about your numbers. They are trivial. You,the whole you, not random numbers, are what i care about :)

    xoxo
    love you honey!!!!

Looks like a fab weekend! I’ve got the body for life book but don’t really get it! Protein cake looks awesome! x

  10. March 16, 2010 2:09 am

Hahaha, you girls are wicked crazy! Must be such a jazz to hang out with you guys.
not sure about the nutritional stats…I’m not much for calorie-counting…but it’s your blog so you can do whatever you want!

Fave clean treat: dried fruits! Aah! I love dried mango and blueberries and strawberries and peaches!

  11. March 16, 2010 2:26 am

Dude, Angel Food cake protein cake…..genius! I did a pumpkin pie one once and a strawberry shortcake BUT this is even better!! I don’t really care about nutrition stats, all your food is so good and healthy. But I like hearing about the ratio’s you met. I know that BFL and that helps with structure if needed.

  12. March 16, 2010 3:18 am

ahh i dont know why but I love seeing ppl’s groceries, I think it gives me ideas of what to get on my next trip! i have that cinnamon its HUGE and lasts, well the way I use it, not that long haha its amazing though! and the LC’s are awesome when you can get them like 5 in a pack! SCORE! last time they had a HUGE choabni at costco, I grabbed that right up!

the pics of you and the gals are so cute, and love the ‘palm’ tree and purple decor hahaa

im not a calorie counter myself, so i don’t know about the stats, but if it helps you and ummm this is YOUR SPACE! so ya know what? I thnk you can do whatever you want and I will still love you :)

favortie clean treat. i take a dollop of canned pumpkin, some protein powder, cottage cheese, eggwhties and oatbran, mix it in a mug and VOILA…like a pumpkin protein cake in a mug! it takes 1 min too just like your angel food cake which um I MUST try! as well as the pineaplpe chobani…i am so with you on the high sugar content, but once in a while I cannot resist!

  13. March 16, 2010 3:40 am

What brand of protein powder did you use for the cake? DOes it have to be a casein blend? It looks really good!

I think its totally cool that you are doing the things that you know work for you and make you feel the best. It’s so important to feel your best during this time and having something stable to follow like BL will not only make you feel better, it will keep you sane and strong during all of your crazy excitement.

  17. March 16, 2010 5:15 am

You and your friends look so boring ;)

My favorite clean stuff is anything involving protein powders. I love experimenting. I wish I kept track of how many lbs of powder i’ve had in the last 5 years ;)

  18. March 16, 2010 5:18 am

    So much to comment on!
Ummm super fun looking shenanigans!! LOVE scrambled eggies, LOVE pineapple chobs and can NOT wait until I am back in the states and can eat some!

Good luck with BFL again! I really need to do SOMETHING to get back in spring shorts n’ tee shape… but honestly, it is SO hard with school!! I would feel like I was being verrrry selective, and giving Nick all the leftovers. Sigh. I LOVE BFL and would love to do it again!!

    1. I think if you want to post your stats, I will read! I try not to count calories (too obsessive) but I totally count carb/protein/fat ratios… because that is what I think counts!!

    2. I have not tried protein cakes, but I have tried protein pudding… yum!!

Kristin – I love protein pudding also (greek yougurt and protein powder and maybe some berries mixed in)

I want to know more about this BFL thing you do. I’m so curious about it and we have basically the same eating style so if you wanna hit me up and clue me in that would be fab!!!
Heading to SLC this summer to hit up Miller Race Way and race my go-kart so we HAVE to get together! Miss n love you!

And I know you will rock this BFL challenge girl! You are so dedicated, but you keep it real. I dig it!

  27. March 16, 2010 7:10 am

I love camp or is it kitsch sort of places. The palm and the seashell lamp are AWESOME!

It’s been so long since I’ve tried to follow a food plan I forget what a clean treat is. ;-) I’ll have to say boring old oats, pp, coco, peanut butter. I call it no bake cookie dough.

  28. March 16, 2010 7:21 am

Aren’t those protein cakes amazing?? I’ve only made the chocolate version before but I bet vanilla would be really good too. Oh, and yes they do snap, crackle and pop.

  29. March 16, 2010 7:31 am

How much fibre is in the protein cakes? Mmmm, I can’t wait to try one!

    Pineapple chobs=tropical

    Purple iridescent curtains=not so tropical

OMG the shape of your protein muffin totally cracked me up! Maybe I just have a dirty mind. Now do you see why I am so addicted to these things?

YAY for BFL! I love that we are both taking on a new challenge. BFL vs. INSANITY…

  32. March 16, 2010 8:09 am

  33. March 16, 2010 8:16 am

My favorite clean eating treat is a quality cereal with some fruit and either greek yogurt or almond milk. Cereal is SO a treat for me because I lurve it.

I think you look awesome already but understand wanting to do something that works well for you up until the wedding. Are you trying to lose though? If not, I would suggest shooting for more cals, especially with your intense workouts. ;)

Your weekends always look like so much fun! I want to come to Utah and hang out with you. ONE DAY! Want a harpist to play at your wedding? j/k. Kinda :P

Going to make a confession: I always skip over workouts because it didn’t mean anything to me but now I am SO PSYCHED to get all the deets! Hmm. Shoould I read te BFL book for workout ideas? I have no clue where to start.

never too much Greek yog… I love the pineapple chobani. The 2% fat makes a huge difference I think- have you tried the Fage 2% cherry twin pots? Out of this world!!!!! I used to eat it on top of hot oats one summer when I lived in NY. Freaking amazing. Discontinued in this country :(

I like all the ins and outs of eats, but do whatever makes you happy/is easiest.

    Hi Janetha,

I love seeing the stats. I am trying to get to the 40-40-20 ratio. I am not doing BFL but I have started weight training and I’m trying to get more protein. Here’s the kicker – I am vegan. So it’s hard to get “pure protein” Protein that doesn’t fall into a carb or fat category. Beans are also a carb. Nuts are also a fat. You see my dilemma. Do you (or anyone else here) have any advise?

    It is much appreciated!

Oh, and I use brown rice protein powder… can you OD on proten powder? =)

    • March 16, 2010 2:18 pm

Tofu? Tempeh? Seitan is REALLY high in protein and low in fat, but not sure of the carb content. Soy nuts are good too!

  43. March 16, 2010 11:53 am

I want you to take me out for a girls night!

Sounds like a fun time in ghetto Vegas with the girls!! Makes me miss all my girlfriends!

    1. I’m not big on the numbers, but I do sometimes like seeing the ratios on meals.

    2. I loooove the protein cake! I’ve been making mine with baby food. It’s awesome ;) Although, I’m still obsessed with protein cookie dough. Lately I’ve been putting a dollop of marshmallow fluff on top which is definitely not “clean!” :P

I am trying to cut down and out the sugar, so I’m loving your posts and love the stats that go with them

Daang wendover looks like a BLAST of a girl’s weekend – sorry about the drive home. I hate being anxious in the car – there’s nothing worse than that “trapped-just-want-to-get-home” feeling.

    1. I’m not huge on stats, so I could take them or leave them – but it is really impressive to see how much protein you manage to squeeze into your yummy meals. :-)

    2. I am so obsessed with protein ice cream lately.

now I have the Oklahoma song from my post title and the High School Musical song from your post title stuck in my head. My roommates are going to kill me tonight.

Not gonna lie, I totes thought that you were getting freaky deaky with another girl in that picture. Wild child.

angel food cake is totally appropriate name — looks like a gift from heaven. Oh god that was an awful pun. I need some shut eye.

I am so addicted to HGTV too. I have a huge crush on Antonio-the new design star winner, love him.

My favorite clean eating treat is Greek yogurt, although I don’t really consider it a treat and eat it pretty regularly. I started experimenting with protein “cakes” again too and have been making those semi-regularly lately.

I would love to see more nutrition stats!! I am trying to transition to a BFL/ higher protein way of eating. Blogs like yours and Aprils give me great ideas!

    Woohoo BFL!

After testing out my BodyBugg, I am even more sold on it. BFL has given me the metabolism of like… a teenage boy. It’s crazy. I love it.

Can’t wait for BFL meal posts too!

Your food choices look amazing, you’re really getting some great nutrients in there without depriving yourself of some sweet treats. I hope getting back to speed after your trip will motivate you on your journey, best of luck!

Bahaha! You had a choc. pepp luna- durrr! Right after I announced how much I like it like I’d just discovered fire or something! hahahah!

Your girlfriends are ridic. gorgie- funny ones: under the table and that huge purple penis. Hilarious.

I’m intrigued by stats but not if it means any extra work for you. I personally didn’t see how the protein angel cake could add up to 200?? Rain man at work here.
